CANADA: After the debates Conservatives eye majority

by Clifford F. Thies

You know you've won the debates when the opposition is saying there should be a series of debates, not just a pair. Stephan Harper, prime minister of Canada, and leading his party into the May 2nd snap election, scored a tremendous victory in the recent pair of debates, one in which of Canada's two official languages. A one-day poll conducted immediately after the English language debate showed Harper register a 20 point jump in his leadership rating, as against little or no advance for any of his opponents. Immediately after the debates, Harper was off to battleground ridings in Quebec and Toronto that may hold the key to a Conservative Party majority in the Canadian parliament. In Quebec, Harper argued that Canadians should avoid continued paralysis in Ottawa and give his party a majority. In contrast, the leader of the Bloc Quebecois was arguing that only his party could deny a majority to the Tories. Nationwide, polls show a continued drift of voters from the Grits to the New Democrats, perhaps indicating an unwillingness of left-wing voters to stick with the Liberals if it is clear they will be losers.
