Dr. Jeffrey A. Golden will become chairman of pathology at Brigham and Womens Hospital starting March 1. Golden will be returning to familiar ground. He previously worked in pathology and neuropathology at the hospital, and he trained at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Golden will replace Dr. Michael Gimbrone, who has been chairman for 10 years. Gimbrone is leaving that post but remaining on the clinical and research staff at the hospital, where he has worked for 38 years.

Golden also will become the Ramzi S. Cotran Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. He comes from Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia, where he has been pathologist-in-chief since 2008. His research has focused largely on the early nervous system and the development of disorders such as brain malformation, epilepsy, and autism.

Golden studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and interned at the University of California in Los Angeles. He was a resident in pathology and a fellow in neuropathology at Mass. General, and he was a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School.

Leaders at Brigham and Womens, in a press release, lauded his commitment to research that can be applied to patient treatment.

Golden is a superb scientist, excellent clinician, wonderful investigator and outstanding administrator with a wealth of experience, said Dr. Joseph Loscalzo, chairman of the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Womens. He will be a marvelous addition to our roster of chiefs here at this institution, and lead an outstanding department into the future well and wisely.
