The Mayan Beach Club vs Endangered Sea Turtle Hatchlings. UPDATE Dec 6 2012. After a long battle (and some help from Rick Scott), the people and the turtles lost to the greedy condo led by Keith Beck. Below is from our petition to save it. Why would anyone want to demolish a beautiful sand dune? The Mayan Beach Sand Dune is located on South Beach in Ft. Lauderdale. Perfectly placed between the open ocean and The Mayan Beach Club. This particular sand dune is one of the only left of its kind and provides shelter for sea turtle nests as well as a natural barrier from unnatural lighting which causes sea turtle hatchlings to disorient, head towards the lights and perish far from their destined sea. The endangered Green Sea Turtles (along with Loggerheads and Leatherbacks) come every year to the beaches in Broward County to find secure nesting grounds and lay their eggs, many of them in the dunes. They have been doing this for millions of years until the resorts started tearing down the dunes and building closer to the sea. As the beaches shrink the turtles struggle to find safe space for their babies. The Mayan Beach Club feels this natural barrier of sand blocks the view of the sea from their low rise complex as well as attracts trash from the beach. In fact over the years this mound of sand has provided a nursery for hundreds of endangered sea turtle babies and coverage for many sea creatures from crabs, small birds as well as an endangered dune plant.
