Beaches closed after 3rd shark attack off Maui

HONOLULU

A third shark bite off Maui in less than a month leaves a 30-year-old man with severe injuries to one of his legs.

It happened about 500 yards off shore of the Waieha Golf Course just before 8:30 Sunday morning.

The man, and his dive partner were participating in the 2012 Roi Roundup dive tournament, when he felt a tug at his leg, and saw what he believed to be a 15-foot tiger shark.

After the initial cuts to his right ankle, the shark circled back, but the diver kept him away with his spear gun.

The shark also approached the diver's partner, before swimming away. A golf course employee arrived an hour after the victim was pulled to safety at the seventh hole.

Sunday's incident is the third in the last month. The most recent, last Saturday at Makena Landing, on the southern shore involved a 51-year-old woman, visiting Maui from Northern California.

In that attack, the woman punched the shark, suffering cuts to her hand.

And on Oct. 18, a tiger shark knocked a stand-up paddler off his board at Kanaha Beach.
