Laura Tingle #39;s Keynote at the ACOSS Policy Forum 2012
http://www.conference.acoss.org.au Why has progress in reducing poverty stalled despite two decades of unprecedented growth in Australia? How will we secure the necessary revenue to fund crucial social programs such as a National Disability Insurance Scheme, dental health care, and raise low paying social security payments like Newstart? How do we address the short term politics of demand for lower taxes whilst also expecting the government to do more? This session features a presentation by Laura Tingle, political editor of the Australian Financial Review who recently authored the Quarterly Essay, Great Expectations Government, Entitlement and an Angry Nation. In the essay Laura notes that rather than being relaxed and comfortable, Australians are disenchanted with politics and politicians. She argues this goes to something deep in Australian culture: our great expectations of government. Notions of #39;entitlement #39; will be put to the test, and we will imagine what a different politics would look like since no single political party or government can ever fulfill all of our great expectations.From:ACOSSTVViews:5 0ratingsTime:15:52More inNonprofits Activism
