3. Atoms, Cells and The Flow of Life SG
Understanding the significance of the structure of DNA is, as Francis Crick put it, to understand the "secret of life". This is a very important lecture providing a basis for much of the rest of this course and an understanding how life works. The first part of this lecture provides a perspective from atoms to cell biology as a basis for life on this planet. The second part shows how the information for life in DNA results in the proteins that control how life functions. From their original paper published in NATURE in 1953, Watson and Crick wryly wrote, "It has not escaped our notice that the specific pairing we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material."
