ARTIST BACKGROUND Jean Viski (1891-1961) Was a student of the Academy of Fine Arts. First exhibited in 1921, he specialized in naturalist animal paintings, full of movement. From 1920 on, he spent many years in South America, before coming back to Hungary to stay in the Hortobagy Plains. His favorite subjects are groups of horses, but he also excels in landscapes with cows, carts and his fine idyllic scenes rendering the world of scattered farms in the great Hungarian Plains. All his pictures display strength and impulse, brilliant knowledge of anatomy and superior draftsmanship. He is particularly fond of browns mellowed by green. His paintings could and can be seen at numerous exhibitions. He was awarded a Grand Prix at the 1936 Salon des Beaux Arts in Paris. The same painting decorated the Hungarian 50 peno bank- notes issued in 1934. He is one of the favorite and most recognized Hungarian painters abroad.
