Kitchener based nanotechnology company receives over $290K in funding for COVID-19 fight – KitchenerToday.com

Nicoya is one of four Canadian companies that was selected to receive a grant through the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program.

They received over $290,000 to fight current and future outbreaks of COVID-19.

With this funding, they are working to develop a saliva-based test called 'Atlas'. Upon its development, it will be able to detect viral infections in real-time, allowing for testing to take place outside of labs, hospitals, and clinics.

The company'sgoal is to produce lab-quality test results to an app in under 20 minutes.

The test will be more accessible and affordable for everyone, as it eliminates the need for complex and expensive equipment.

Those who use the test will have the option to share individual test results with public health databases to allow for seamless infection tracking and tracing in communities.

Nicoya is working to make the testing process versatile as well. With a goal to test for both active and prior viral infections.

They are hoping to meet the testing needs for COVID-19 and any future pandemics.
