South West Health is looking for the next nurse practitioner for the Islands Health Care Centre in Freeport.

The district health authority advertised for a full-time nurse practitioner to provide primary health care with a posting that closed Friday, Aug. 29.

South West Health spokesperson Fraser Mooney confirmed today that Melissa Stoddart, the current nurse practitioner at the Islands health centre has accepted a position elsewhere in Nova Scotia.

South West Health would like thank Melissa for her service, and join her friends, colleagues and patients in extending best wishes in this new chapter in her career, said Mooney by email on Tuesday, Sept. 2. We understand this will cause some concern in the community, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

But we are now actively recruiting for a nurse practitioner to serve the communities of Long and Brier Islands.

Mooney said there has been some interest in the position.

We really cant say much at this point as it is a Human Resources issue and we are still in the recruitment process, he said. There has been some interest in the position. Even though the closing date was last week, the recruiting will effectively continue until a permanent replacement can be found.

Facebook posts on the Islanders group say Stoddarts last day at the Islands health centre will be towards the end of October.
