Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX Shiny Pokemon: where to find and how to catch shinies – RPG Site

A new introduction to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is Shiny Pokemon. Although this has been a staple feature of Pokemon games for a while now, they werent present in the original Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team games. The new Nintendo Switch DX versionfixes that though!

For the uninitiated, Shiny Pokemon are basically the same as regular Pokemon except - just like getting a shiny in a packet of trading cards - they have a slightly unique coloring. This can be relatively subtle like a slightly different shade, or particularly striking, like the infamous Red Gyarados. Most of the shinies in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX are on the more outlandish side - which is a good thing.

Shiny Pokemon can randomly appear as Strong Foes in the dungeons, which means that when you see a yellow triangle on the map or above a Pokemons head, you should really go for it. Remember, to recruit any Pokemon you need to make sure your leader deals the last hit.

Not every Pokemon in the game has a Shiny variation though. There are a total of 27 Shiny Pokemon in the game. Here are the Shiny Pokemon and where you can expect to find them, followed by our tips for how to best catch a shiny.

There are a few things you can do to give yourself as high a chance as possible to catch Shiny Pokemon. The first two come from Rare Qualities. The qualities Friendly and Squad Up both give you a higher chance of recruiting Pokemon. Friendly always applies, but Squad Up increases the chances depending on how many Pokemon you have with you in the Dungeon. Weve got a full list of Rare Qualities in Mystery Dungeon DXshould you need it.

The Friend Bow is a very important item to have when trying to get Shiny Pokemon. Itll increase the chance of recruiting both normal and Shiny Pokemon and all you need to do is make sure your leader has it equipped. We also have a page on where to find the Friend Bow which you'll defintiely find helpful.

The TM False Swipe will also be helpful in recruiting Pokemon. This move will increase the chances of recruiting Pokemon if this is the move used to knock them out. Giving this to your leader will be a big help. Sadly this isn't one of the TMs you can get for free through the use of a Wonder Mail Code, but several other useful TMs can be gained that way.

Basically, if youre a Pokemon wearing a Friend Bow, with the Rare Quality Friendly, whilst also making sure to use the False Swipe TM, youre going to have the absolute best chance at recruiting any Shiny Pokemon you come across.

7 Takeaways From REWIRED, An inewsource Investigation – KPBS

inewsource published a two-part investigation last week called REWIRED. The stories detail an experimental brain treatment, a Navy SEALs psychotic break and an internal investigation at the University of California San Diego, one of the countrys top research institutions.

Since the articles are lengthy, we compiled the top seven takeaways from the investigation for the TL;DR crowd.

The only thing you need to know going in: TMS stands for transcranial magnetic stimulation, a relatively new medical treatment that uses electromagnetism to affect the brain. Clinical trials have shown TMS is effective in battling major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and migraines.

Thats all. So without further ado:

Former Navy SEAL John Surmont turned to Dr. Kevin Murphy, at the time a UC San Diego vice-chancellor, to treat his traumatic brain injury and PTSD. Murphy used a personalized version of TMS that isnt scientifically proven to be effective. Surmont felt the treatment was helping at first but later began showing signs of mania, like singing loudly at inappropriate times and exhibiting abnormally high energy.

Murphy supervised at least 234 personalized TMS treatments given to Surmont. Eventually, the veterans manic symptoms became so bad that he self-admitted to the San Diego VA psychiatric ward. After discharge, Surmont went on a weeks-long breaking-and-entering spree in Los Angeles where he thought he was on a covert military mission that resulted in several arrests and years of court hearings.

Murphy said he continued to treat Surmont even as his manic symptoms worsened because these people are sick, my friend. What are you supposed to do, stop treating someone?

A UCSD whistleblower complaint prompted the UC Presidents Office to investigate whether Murphy used a $10 million university gift to enrich his private businesses. Murphy denies this, though he acknowledges he wasnt great at inventory or auditing.

The $10 million was supposed to be used for Murphy to research his experimental brain treatment, but all that research has been suspended while the investigation continues. University officials wont talk to us until the investigation is complete, but they expect to wrap it up shortly.

Murphys unique version of TMS involves taking readings of patients brainwaves to offer each person a customized treatment. The doctor said hes treated thousands of patients this way who suffer from autism, cerebral palsy, depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, sleep disorders and a bad golf swing all to great results. He claims his treatment is effective on more than 90% of his patients and that it works better than traditional TMS, which doesnt incorporate a patients brainwaves into the treatment.

However, there is no clinical trial or published research supporting Murphys claims. Experts we spoke with were concerned that Murphy was misleading patients, especially vulnerable people who may be willing to try anything if they think it might help with a debilitating condition.

The U.S. Special Operations Command, which oversees the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force special operations, is expected to soon begin testing Murphys treatment on military personnel to examine its effects on human performance.

Murphys private company, PeakLogic, signed a contract with SOCOM that gives the federal agency the ability to test how Murphys treatment improves symptoms experienced by military personnel who suffer from chronic pain, a SOCOM spokesman said. It will take place at the Air Force Research Laboratory and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

UCSD policy requires its faculty and staff to get approval from the university when conducting outside research, but Murphy told us he never went through that process because its his private company engaging in research not him. University policy applies to all faculty research and doesnt contain an exemption for private businesses.

While Murphy was opening his private businesses devoted to his version of TMS, he struck up a relationship with Michael McDermott, who was then the chief counsel of the UCSD health system. McDermotts job was to give campus health officials legal advice.

We looked through business filings and found McDermott was a corporate officer for one of Murphys nonprofits and one of his companies while working at UCSD. McDermott also managed a company that contracted with Murphys TMS clinic in exchange for 15% of its revenue. The attorney never listed those business interests on university disclosure forms during his two-year tenure.

During the internal UC investigation, Murphy frequently cited McDermott as proof that he did nothing wrong: The doctor was working with a university lawyer as he opened and grew his businesses, so he figured he had UCSDs approval.

In 2016, Murphy pitched a study to the San Diego VA to test how effective his treatment is for patients with PTSD. Murphys research proposal included details of a previous study he said hed performed, along with data and charts.

The data and charts were not Murphys: He took them from a competitors study and kept the language verbatim throughout sections of his proposal, except he substituted the name of their treatment for his.

This is what would be considered by scientific professionals to be plagiarized material, an expert told us. (You can read Murphys explanation for what happened here.)

Many of the things Murphy told us over 13 hours of interviews werent supported by evidence or were incorrect.

For example, Murphy claimed that in the six months leading up to Surmonts psychotic break, the veteran was homeless, doing drugs on the streets of Los Angeles and hadnt shown up for treatment. When we presented the doctor with evidence disproving each of those statements, he told us his previous claims were based on his personal belief or opinion, along with the fact that he sees thousands of patients and cant be responsible for remembering the history of each.

As for the UC investigation, Murphy claims more than a dozen people at the university who had a hand in overseeing the $10 million gift for his research, or worked with him to set up his companies, or worked for him to manage his funds, were incompetent or so jealous of his success that they wanted to see him fail. We couldnt verify most of those claims.

Im on the bleeding edge of this, Murphy said. And so everyones shooting arrows in my back, going, Stop him. Stop his research. Whistleblower him. We want this. Sue him. Make him look bad. Whatever it takes. Because this is really a big deal.

Author talk leads to TMS anti-bullying club – Teton Valley News

The sixth and seventh graders of Teton Middle School were unusually captivated during a presentation in the gym last Wednesday morning. The students listened and laughed as childrens book author Ben Mikaelsen described the trials of his childhood, interspersed with remarkable photos of him with his tame 700-pound black bear, Buffy.

Mikaelsen was in Driggs thanks to a grant from the Education Foundation of Teton Valley. Sixth grade English teacher Jennifer Marlar, fresh from the Teton County, Wyoming school district, was surprised to find that TMS didnt have any anti-bullying programming.

So I made it my mission to start an anti-bullying campaign, she said.

The sixth graders are reading Touching Spirit Bear, Mikaelsens novel about a juvenile delinquent that finds redemption through a Native American healing process, so it seemed like a no-brainer to invite Mikaelsen to speak at the middle school. Marlar applied for $1,500 through the EFTV classroom grant program. That covered half of Mikaelsens speaking fee, so Jackson Hole Middle School paid the rest in order for him to visit that school as well.

EFTV executive director Pam Walker said that through the Tin Cup, other fundraisers, and private donations, the nonprofit has been able to gradually increase the amount of funding for classroom grants, and this year will give educators a total of $31,000 for new programs, supplies, technology, books, and field trips.

Mikaelsen spoke, joked, and jested for an hour, describing his experiences being bullied as a student in Bolivia and Minnesota, and becoming a bully himself. He explained that chasing his passions of storytelling, high diving, flying, and sky diving freed him from that relentless cycle.

He challenged the students to pursue their own dreams and to have the bravery to be kind to their peers.

You have one fantastic life to explore Planet Earth, he told them. Are you going to waste it putting other people down?

Now Marlar hopes to build on Mikaelsens momentum by forming a student-led anti-bullying after school club. She said the kids will plan, research, and implement a school-wide campaign to encourage mutual respect, kindness, and support.

Harry and Meghan should ‘do the right thing’ and withdraw TMs – World Intellectual Property Review

A UK law which likely requires the Queens consent to register Sussex Royal as a trademark may leave Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with little choice but to drop the brand, lawyers have told WIPR.

The couple, who have decided to step back from royal duties, are in discussions with the Queen and the rest of the royal family on the precise nature of their future relationship.

Particularly at issue is the pairs continued use of the term Sussex Royal, which the Queen reportedly considers untenable as they seek distance from active royal life.

Andy King, partner at Mewburn Ellis, said the Queens position means that the registrations, expected to be granted next month, could contravene UK trademark law.

WIPR reported yesterday, February 20, that section 4 of the UK Trade Marks Act 1994 requires the royal familys consent for marks which could lead the public to think the application had royal authorisation.

If the Queen, as reported, considers the Sussex Royal brand to be untenable, then this could potentially be seen as consent having been withdrawn, King said, clarifying that this would only apply once the couple formally step back from royal duties at the end of March.

The registrations may be vulnerable to cancellation on this basis, although not necessarily, he said. The legal test is the position at the time that the applications were submitted, a time when the Sussexs did have consent. It is for this same reason that the applications may not be opposable on this ground as things stand.

While there have been multiple notices of threatened opposition against the Sussex Royal marks, no formal oppositions have yet been filed.

But given the reported disagreement with the royal family, if the registrations do indeed grant next month, it would seem necessary for the registrations to then be surrendered, he added.

Harry and Meghan left with no choice

Laurie Heizler, of counsel at Barlow Robbins in London, said the Sussex Royal Foundation, which filed the marks and is owned by the couple, should do the right thing and withdraw the applications.

Given the Queens position, Heizler said it is difficult to imagine that these trademark applications can now make any progress.

Heizler argued that, in light of the Queens reported position, it would certainly be in bad faith if the couples company tried to progress the applications, despite having had royal authorisation when they were filed.

Even if it did so, the well-publicised controversy surrounding the couple and the Queens interventions would most likely lead to the UK Intellectual Property Office refusing to grant the trademarks, Heizler added.

The company would be well advised to withdraw the trademarksit probably has no choice, he said.

The Morning Show: From Reality To The Screen – Old Gold & Black

Though Apple TVs + flagship offering looks, sounds and casts like great TV, director Mimi Leders faulty depiction of daily newsroom activity compromises the series authenticity. I should know. I worked for the morning news show the series is based on.

The Morning Show (also the name of the show-within-the-show, referred to as TMS) profiles the fictional UBA network grappling with the downfall of The Morning Shows lead co-anchor Mitch Kessler, who has been accused of sexual misconduct. Things escalate quickly as the network and the show attempt to reconcile internal strife while producing a seamless newscast that refrains from revealing the chaos. In the meantime, a previously unknown news anchor who went viral in a controversial video is slated to fill Kesslers seat.

The shows handling of this crisis is somewhat inaccurate, as far as workplace standards are concerned. Again, I would know. I worked on that morning news show in the wake of the removal of one of its longtime anchors, Matt Lauer, also accused of sexual misconduct.

For one, each character spends most of each episode yelling at each other to the point where it seems like they are just yelling for yellings sake. How they dont become hoarse is a mystery. Even under tense and stressful circumstances, Executive Producers (EPs) do not barge around control rooms and studio hallways screaming and cursing out their colleagues, as is character Charlie Chip Blacks normal routine. EPs often praise their colleagues for producing a great show, though you wouldnt know it from watching The Morning Show.

When Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) protests anchoring the show unless Chip can promise her the network will renew her contract and honor her requested terms, she finally sits in her anchor chair just seconds before the show goes live. Its designed to be dramatic and suspenseful TV, which it is. But, even on a normal day in the series, the anchors sit in their chair just seconds before the show starts. This isnt how it really goes down. Anchors spend at least an hour at the desk pre-taping headlines and reviewing scripts. They dont pout in their dressing rooms like Alex Levy and Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon), only miraculously appearing in the studio just seconds before air. The nonchalant attitude of The Morning Show anchors do not adequately represent the day to day work of national news anchors. Instead, their actions perpetuate the stereotype that television news anchors do nothing but read the teleprompter and look pretty. This is a gross understatement of their roles. They often research and co-produce their own stories in addition to delivering them to the American people.

Anchors and professional journalists very rarely, if ever, go off script. However, it seems that this is the norm on TMS, which sends Chip into a frenzy of rage and network executives calling the studio. Anchors also do not have random breakdowns on live TV, although these meltdowns only speak more highly of Anistons acting.

The series awards the anchors very little time to report any news, making it difficult for the viewer to believe they are actually as talented at their jobs as we are led to believe. We are also led to believe that TMS anchors are infamous for garnering a were among people connection with their audience, but viewers never have the chance to see this for themselves. In fact, The Morning Show feels almost intentionally sealed off from the rest of the world. In contrast to the morning news shows it emulates, there are no studio windows and the anchors never come into contact with the general public. There is also the premise that Alex Levy is a world-renowned journalist, but she comes off as cold, unanimated and lacking empathy, though Im sure this is intentional.

Despite its inaccuracies, The Morning Show is always entertaining, tackles real world issues and is sometimes so suspenseful you cant help but catch yourself holding your breath. I really havent given the series the credit that is due, especially since they do correctly portray many enigmas of the New York morning news show world. Its smart, clever and most importantly, timely. Delightfully, the New York City scenery transports the viewer to the heart of the big apple, as they daydream of taking a walk around in Alex Levys apartment and attending lavish media galas.

It is also brilliantly acted. Most notably, Hollywood favorites Aniston and Steve Carell display some of their best performances to date and demonstrate a more serious acting skill set not always present in their claim-to-fame series Friends and The Office, respectively.

Billy Crudups performance comes as a surprise. He plays a slimy and annoying, yet charming network executive, delivering one of the strongest performances of any cast member. Hes the character we want to hate but cant bring ourselves to. Plus, he and Bradley go on a private Barneys shopping raid, so theres that.

Better yet, The Morning Show sticks the landing, big time. The finale is one of the best episodes of TV so far this year, keeping the viewer engaged until the very last second. I wont reveal what happens its something you have to see to fully appreciate. It left me with an overall positive feeling of the series, regardless of its over-dramatism and inaccuracy, as well as a yearning to watch the second season, which will be available on Apple TV + in November of this year.

Chicago-based project44, a technology services provider offering standardized, secure Web service API (application programming interfaces) integrations enabling 3PLs and shippers to connect with carriers in real time, and BluJay Solutions, a provider of supply chain software and services, said this week they are partnering up in a move geared towards helping shippers to optimize supply chains across various verticals in North America and Europe.

The companies said that this partnership will mesh BluJays multi-tenant, cloud-based TMS with project44s global multimodal network, data security system, and data cleansing and normalization capabilities. And they added that with a native integration to the BluJay TMS platform, supply chain stakeholders gain the ability to make smart, real-time decisions based in high-fidelity data and predictive analytics across the transportation value chain.

Were excited to partner with BluJay, as they work with many of the world's most progressive shippers and logistics service providers, said project44 Head of Global Network Partnerships Tommy Barnes, in a statement. Looking back at 2019 in the Tonganoxie community – The Mirror

There were notable moments throughout 2019 for the Tonganoxie area, but many seemed to happen in the final months of the year.

Heres a look at a few of those top stories:

A new Caseys for Tonganoxie

The new Caseys General Store will be opened in October.

The store officially opened at 6 p.m. Oct. 17.

Tonganoxies newest Caseys is about two blocks south of the former store, with the new locale being south of the U.S. Highway 24-40 and Kansas Highway 16 intersection on the west side of the road.

The current store closed at 11 p.m. Oct. 16, with the kitchen closing at 2 p.m. that day.

This is the third Caseys to be built in Tonganoxie. All three have been constructed in the same proximity.

The first location was on the northwest corner of U.S. 24-40 and K-16 where the optometry office of Richard Dean and Katie Volk now stands. The current was then built a block north.

The landscape near the new Caseys is expected to continue to change, as a residential development in the area is in the works.

Battle of the Brains

A handful of Tonganoxie Middle School students made history with a big accomplishment in December.

The TMS proposal of Step Right Up was named the 2019 Burns & McDonnell Battle of the Brains winner.

The students won $50,000 for the schools science, technology, engineering and math department. Plus, the students will work with engineers to create a replica a $1 million replica of their proposal.

The exhibit likely will open around January 2021 at Science City.

Tonganoxie Middle School students and their teachers celebrate learning the news that TMS was one of the Top 20 Finalists for this years Battle of the Brains. TMS teachers Tracey Waldeier and Steve Bartlow, along with students Lucy Graveman, Ella Pruitt, Jameson Breitzman, Lauren Glynn, Caleb Hodges, Wesley Johnson and Joshua Duvall made up the winning team.

Various news outlets interviewed the students before a big welcome happened later that day outside TMS. Fellow students lined the drive to the schools main entrance to welcome the team back home. Team members also spoke before the school board at the boards December meeting.

The TMS team won out of a field of 840 proposals involving 7,250 students from 270 schools in 50 school districts.

Making history on the gridiron and the course

The Tonganoxie High football team won 10 games for the first time in a season this year.

The Chieftains also won two playoff games in the same year for the first time and finished the regular season undefeated for the second time in three season. THS ended the season two games short of playing for a state title.

The THS boys cross country team placed third place in the state in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history. The squad also recorded a third straight regional title, the programs best string of regional titles since Tonganoxie won four consecutive regional titles from 1989-92.

More firsts at THS

The Tonganoxie High wrestling team had its first individual state champion in Korbin Riedel. The school got its second not long after when Connor Searcy won gold for Tonganoxie in February at the Class 4A state wrestling championships in Salina. Searcy will try to win another title this year, while Grayson Sonntag will look to get another state medal himself. Sonntag placed third at state in 2019.

Big election year

New school, new commission district, new commissioner.

Tonganoxie voters passed a $51.4 million bond issue that will overhaul the current THS campus. The September mail-in ballot passed by 93 votes.

Leavenworth County also appointed its first commissioner for the new Fifth District in Mike Stieben.

The Tonganoxie Republican won the four-person race with 654 votes. Tonganoxie Independent David Frese, who in November would be elected Tonganoxie mayor, finished second a mere 33 votes behind Stieben.

Frese replaces longtime Mayor Jason Ward, who opted not to run for re-election. He served for 14 years, first as a council member and then mayor.

Turf time

Tonganoxie came together to raise money for field turf that was installed in time for fall season.

Pledges from residents and businesses raise nearly $400,000, with the district paying $250,000.

Construction of new Tonganoxie Public Library

By the end of 2019, the new Tonganoxie Public Library was built.

Interior work still needs to be done in the new year before it can open in March 2020. The project is expected to be finished in February, with move-in coming in March.

The $3.75 million project is coming to fruition thanks to a 20-year 3/4-cent sales tax Tonganoxie voters approved in 2017. The tax replaced a 10-year tax of the same rate that funded the Tonganoxie Water Park.

Linwood tornado

A massive EF-4 tornado caused roughly $26 million in damage to Linwood and other parts of Leavenworth County in May.

Nearly 130 homes in the county were damaged, with 44 of them completely destroyed. Along with that were 159 "accessory structures, such as out buildings and, the most noticeable structure on television media coverage that day, the Free State Growers greenhouses. The tornado leveled that campus, which sits across Kansas Highway 32 from Linwood to the north.

McLouth High basketball heads to state

The McLouth High boys basketball team went 18-6 in 2018-19, and with that ended a sizable state basketball drought.

MHS won the Class 2A substate at Valley Heights to qualify for the state tournament in Hays. It was McLouth's first state appearance in nearly 60 years, as the Bulldogs last went to state in 1960.

An additional 159 accessory structures such as out buildings and an industrial center, were totally destroyed.

Time to move on: How to rework Pokemon Gos TM system – Pokemon GO Hub

Hello Trainers! When Pokemon Go first launched in 2016 it became evident very quickly that we were missing a lot of major features that we all were very used to having in the main series games. One of those features was the ability to change a move we didnt want to a move that we did. That functionality was eventually bestowed upon us in the form of fast TMs and charge TMs. Finally, we had a way to update the moves of our Pokemon, no longer would your perfect maxed out Gyarados be stuck with Twister as a charge move.

These new TMs came with a catch, they are completely random. For anybody whos ever felt the frustration of having to use multiple TMs to change a single move, its very clear that Pokemon Gos TM system is in need of a major overhaul. Dont get me wrong, having TMs is way better than not having them at all, and their introduction was a huge leap forward. However, with the upcoming Pokemon Battle League, the ever-growing PVP community and the increase in moves being introduced into the game the perfect time to overhaul the TMs in Pokemon Go is now.

So lets go through a few ideas, ways that Niantic could overhaul the way TMs work in Pokemon Go to make them more efficient, easier to use, and less hair-pullingly frustrating. Well weigh the pros versus the cons, my thoughts on the idea and then rate each idea with a ranking. If you need a refresher on how TMs currently work, check out our article about it here.

Lets get into it.

*Disclaimer These are all ideas that Ive collected through research throughout the internet, each idea Ive seen posted multiple times.

First, well talk about the moves that are regularly available under the current TM system. This excludes any Community Day exclusive moves, and any legacy moves.

Next, well talk about the moves that are not regularly available under the current TM system. These are moves trainers cant TM onto their Pokemon because they are what are called Legacy moves. Moves that Niantic has removed from a Pokemons move pool, or moves that were only available during a limited-time event such as raid days or Community days.

I think we can all agree, that pretty much any of the solutions Ive laid out here would be an improvement over what is currently in place. Some are much better than others, and each of them has their drawback. I dont think that anything that Niantic puts into place will make everybody happy, or solve all the problems the current system has.

However, as Rita takes to yet another show, we have some unanswered questions. Every show that Ora has ever appeared on, shes only ever lasted one season. She joined Cowell on his most shocking season of X Factor to date, beginning the ultimate purge of The X Factor ratings and even then, it wasnt enough to earn herself a second year. These Breakthroughs Made the 2010s the Decade of the Brain – Singularity Hub

I rarely use the words transformative or breakthrough for neuroscience findings. The brain is complex, noisy, chaotic, and often unpredictable. One intriguing result under one condition may soon fail for a majority of others. Whats more, paradigm-shifting research trends often require revolutionary tools. When were lucky, those come once a decade.

But I can unabashedly say that the 2010s saw a boom in neuroscience breakthroughs that transformed the field and will resonate long into the upcoming decade.

In 2010, the idea that wed be able to read minds, help paralyzed people walk again, incept memories, or have multi-layered brain atlases was near incomprehensible. Few predicted that deep learning, an AI model loosely inspired by neural processing in the brain, would gain prominence and feed back into decoding the brain. Around 2011, I asked a now-prominent AI researcher if we could automatically detect dying neurons in a microscope image using deep neural nets; we couldnt get it to work. Today, AI is readily helping read, write, and map the brain.

As we cross into the next decade, it pays to reflect on the paradigm shifts that made the 2010s the decade of the brain. Even as a boo humbug skeptic Im optimistic about the next decade for solving the brains mysteries: from genetics and epigenetics to chemical and electrical communications, networks, and cognition, well only get better at understanding and tactfully controlling the supercomputer inside our heads.

Weve covered brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) so many times even my eyes start glazing over. Yet I still remember my jaw dropping as I watched a paralyzed man kick off the 2014 World Cup in a bulky mind-controlled exosuit straight out of Edge of Tomorrow.

Flash forward a few years, and scientists have already ditched the exosuit for an implanted neural prosthesis that replaces severed nerves to re-establish communication between the brains motor centers and lower limbs.

The rise in BCIs owes much to the BrainGate project, which worked tirelessly to decode movement from electrical signals in the motor cortex, allowing paralyzed patients to use a tablet with their minds or operate robotic limbs. Today, prosthetic limbs coated with sensors can feed back into the brain, giving patients mind-controlled movement, sense of touch, and an awareness of where the limb is in space. Similarly, by decoding electrical signals in the auditory or visual cortex, neural implants can synthesize a persons speech by reconstructing what theyre hearing or re-create images of what theyre seeingor even of what theyre dreaming.

For now, most BCIsespecially those that require surgical implantsare mainly used to give speech or movement back to those with disabilities or decode visual signals. The brain regions that support all these functions are on the surface, making them relatively more accessible and easier to decode.

But theres plenty of interest in using the same technology to target less tangible brain issues, such as depression, OCD, addiction, and other psychiatric disorders that stem from circuits deep within the brain. Several trials using implanted electrodes, for example, have shown dramatic improvement in people suffering from depression that dont respond to pharmaceutical drugs, but the results vary significantly between individuals.

The next decade may see non-invasive ways to manipulate brain activity, such as focused ultrasound, transcranial magnetic or direct current stimulation (TMS/tDCS), and variants of optogenetics. Along with increased understanding of brain networks and dynamics, we may be able to play select neural networks like a piano and realize the dream of treating psychiatric disorders at their root.

Rarely does one biological research field get such tremendous support from multiple governments. Yet the 2010s saw an explosion in government-backed neuroscience initiatives from the US, EU, and Japan, with China, South Korea, Canada, and Australia in the process of finalizing their plans. These multi-year, multi-million-dollar projects focus on developing new tools to suss out the brains inner workings, such as how it learns, how it controls behavior, and how it goes wrong. For some, the final goal is to simulate a working human brain inside a supercomputer, forming an invaluable model for researchers to test out their hypothesesand maybe act as a blueprint for one day reconstructing all of a persons neural connections, called the connectome.

Even as initial announcements were met with skepticismwhat exactly is the project trying to achieve?the projects allowed something previously unthinkable. The infusion of funding provided a safety blanket to develop new microscopy tools to ever-more-rapidly map the brain, resulting in a toolkit of new fluorescent indicators that track neural activation and map neural circuits. Even rudimentary simulations have generated virtual epilepsy patients to help more precisely pinpoint sources of seizures. A visual prosthesis to restore sight, a memory prosthesis to help those with faltering recall, and a push for non-invasive ways to manipulate human brains all stemmed from these megaprojects.

Non-profit institutions such as the Allen Institute for Brain Science have also joined the effort, producing map after map at different resolutions of various animal brains. The upcoming years will see individual brain maps pieced together into comprehensive atlases that cover everything from genetics to cognition, transforming our understanding of brain function from paper-based 2D maps into multi-layered Google Maps.

In a way, these national programs ushered in the golden age of brain science, bringing talent from other disciplinesengineers, statisticians, physicists, computer scientistsinto neuroscience. Early successes will likely drive even more investment in the next decade, especially as findings begin translating into actual therapies for people who dont respond to traditional mind-targeting drugs. The next decade will likely see innovative new tools that manipulate neural activity more precisely and less-invasively than optogenetics. The rapid rise in the amount of data will also mean that neuroscientists will quickly embrace cloud-storage options for collaborative research and GPUs and more powerful computing cores to process the data.

First, brain to AI. The physical structure and information flow in the cortex inspired deep learning, the most prominent AI model today. Ideas such as hippocampal replaythe brains memory center replays critical events in fast forward during sleep to help consolidate memoryalso benefit AI models.

In addition, the activation patterns of individual neurons merged with materials science to build neuromorphic chips, or processors that function more like the brain, rather than todays silicon-based chips. Although neuromorphic chips remain mainly an academic curiosity, they have the potential to perform complicated, parallel computations at a fraction of the energy used by processors today. As deep neural nets get ever-more power hungry, neuromorphic chips may present a welcome alternative.

In return, AI algorithms that closely model the brain are helping solve long-time mysteries of the brain, such as how the visual cortex processes input. In a way, the complexity and unpredictability of neurobiology is shriveling thanks to these computational advancements.

Although crossovers between biomedical research and digital software have long existedthink programs that help with drug designthe match between neuroscience and AI is far stronger and more intimate. As AI becomes more powerful and neuroscientists collaborate outside their field, computational tools will only unveil more intricacies of neural processing, including more intangible aspects such as memory, decision-making, or emotions.

I talk a bunch about the brains electrical activity, but supporting that activity are genes and proteins. Neurons also arent a uniform bunch; multiple research groups are piecing together a whos who of the brains neural parts and their individual characteristics.

Although invented in the late 2000s, technologies such as optogenetics and single-cell RNA sequencing were widely adopted by the neuroscience community in the 2010s. Optogenetics allows researchers to control neurons with light, even in freely moving animals going about their lives. Add to that a whole list of rainbow-colored proteins to tag active cells, and its possible to implant memories. Single-cell RNA sequencing is the queen bee of deciphering a cells identity, allowing scientists to understand the genetic expression profile of any given neuron. This tech is instrumental in figuring out the neuron populations that make up a brain at any point in timeinfancy, youth, aging.

But perhaps the crown in new tools goes to brain organoids, or mini-brains, that remarkably resemble those of preterm babies, making them excellent models of the developing brain. Organoids may be our best chance of figuring out the neurobiology of autism, schizophrenia, and other developmental brain issues that are difficult to model with mice. This decade is when scientists established a cookbook for organoids of different types; the next will see far more studies that tap into their potential for modeling a growing brain. With hard work and luck, we may finally be able to tease out the root causes of these developmental issues.

Read This If You’re Considering Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation – Yahoo Lifestyle

Over the past 20 years, Ive coped relatively well with antidepressants and mood stabilizers until this year. Ive been on medical leave most of the year with treatment-resistant depression. Ive had some pretty bad spells over the years, but five months ago, I entered the deepest depression Ive ever experienced. My medications were no longer working, and I was desperate to find another solution.

Then, I heard about transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and after some research, I was hopeful that this could work for me. Since TMS was FDA-approved in 2008, most insurance plans in the U.S., including Medicare/Medicaid, cover the treatment, but insurance requires proof that multiple medications have stopped working.

Going into my first treatment, the internet and my doctor provided expectations such as the procedure, treatment effectiveness, reaction times and side effects. Heres what I learned and experienced.

How it works?

TMS is non-invasive and doesnt requires anesthesia. The TMS device contains a magnetic coil that pulsates to stimulate neurons in the region of the brain associated with depression. At this time, TMS is approved for treatment-resistant depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but ongoing research explores protocols for other mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and even chronic pain.

Because the treatment involves magnets, you cannot wear any metal jewelry, hair clips, etc. Discuss any metal implants in your head with a doctor they will advise if you are a candidate based on the location of the implant.

What to expect?

During the treatment, youre in a comfortable reclining chair with an adjustable headrest and lumbar support. There is a T-shaped tape that keeps the head in position on the headrest, and youll wear earplugs. The magnetic pulses are administered on the left side of the head towards the front.

During the first session, the doctor performed a mapping exercise to position the magnetic pulse correctly. The machine issues a single tap while the doctor watches for a finger twitch from the right hand. Once this is complete, the position is programmed in the machine.

How does it feel? How long does it last?

The pulses feel like Woody Woodpecker tapping on your skull for five-second intervals with a rest period in between. The machine beeps before each series of pulses, so you know when the pulse interval starts. The treatment can last anywhere from 17-37 minutes, depending on the rest periods. We started out with longer rest periods, and as I got used to it, the rest periods decreased.

Treatment protocols are four to six weeks and occur every weekday. A tapering period follows with about six treatments every other day.

What to do with your time?

You cant wear earbuds due to the metal, and the reclining position makes it difficult to read. My center had a smart TV, so I watched videos and listened to podcasts via YouTube. I thought of the treatment as reprogramming my brain, so I chose inspirational and humorous programs for a positive mindset. Also, you cant fall asleep. With the woodpecker tapping, youd think it would be difficult, but fatigue means I can fall asleep anywhere, any time.

When will I see improvement? How much improvement should I expect?

Response time and improvement vary for everyone. Some people see an improvement the first week. I saw a slight improvement after four weeks and an amazing improvement at the end of the six weeks. However, it doesnt work for everyone. Forty-five to 60 percent of patients see some improvement with 30-40 percent achieving remission. Effects can last up to 12 months, and insurance coverage for follow-up treatments varies. Luckily, my insurance will cover another course in three months.

Are there side effects?

Headaches are the most common side effect, but as you get used to the treatment, these usually fade. Taking some Ibuprofen before the first few treatments helped, but after a few days, I tolerated the tapping.

Another common side effect, referred to as the dip, can occur during the first few weeks. Everyone reacts to the treatment differently, so you may not experience this at all, but its something to be aware of. During this dip, the initial improvement is reversed, depression recurs and it can be much worse. I experienced this about a week in, and it lasted a day or two. Others report dips up to a week. Since responses vary, I actually experienced another dip after about four weeks, but it wasnt as bad as the first one.

Digitizing Transportation Processes: A Win/Win for Shippers and Carriers | 2019-12-06 – SupplyChainBrain

Just what is supply-chain "digitization" anyway? And how far along are transportation companies in adapting to it? Two Pitt Ohio executives chief financial officer and chief information officer Scott Sullivan, and chief marketing officer and executive VP Geoff Muessig, engage in a lively discussion about the promise and reality of the digital supply chain. A SupplyChainBrain Power Lunch Roundtable presentation.

SCB: Whats your definition of the word digitization?

Muessig: It relates back to the intent of shippers to create a seamless supply chain. They want end-to-end visibility of their product flow into the plant, the distribution center, to the customer, and for returns. So how do we accomplish that? So many shipments and products move on paper bills of lading. There's an intent out there to move a to digital format, so there's greater visibility and speed of transmission. Thats where digitization comes into the supply-chain conversation.

SCB: Scott, whats your view?

Sullivan: I agree with that. A lot of it has to do with the evolution of technology in the business world. Back in the 2000s, we all had big PCs and really loved them. Phones today are more powerful than PCs were a decade ago, and modern technology is involved with cloud computing, Making information available to all parties within the supply chain has become a very important part of digitization. Its about bringing information together and making it available not only for your internal use, but for external customers as well.

SCB: To what degree are shippers today embracing digitization in their relationships with carriers?

Muessig: Theres avid interest in getting status updates on shipments in digital format. They want speed of information, and to able to broadcast it to many people inside their company. But when theyre tendering shipments to a carrier, you see a break in the digital supply chain. All a sudden they revert to a piece of paper, creating a paper bill of lading and handing it off to the carrier, who then has to transpose that information and digitize it again to execute the shipment.

Sullivan: Digital is a key buzzword nowadays. In reality, though, weve been betting on this strategy for the last 10 or 15 years. Telematics has become available in trucks. That's the first part of digitization, being able to communicate with the driver in real time. We've used digitization to deliver more value to the customer and provide them with status updates in real time.

SCB: So where do you go from here?

Sullivan: The question is, how do we fix the gaps? We've had a vision to become a virtual transportation company. To me, that's digitization. We want to be able to interact with our customers. They don't have to make a phone call. They can log onto their computer or use their phone to get the information they need to track their shipments.

SCB: And yet a number of shippers are still lagging in their relationships with carriers. Is it a question of prioritizing IT projects, or just not understanding the benefits of digitization?

Muessig: I think carriers havent done a good enough job of explaining the benefits of getting digital bills of lading. One is an improvement in accuracy, in that you're not transposing numbers and routing a shipping to the wrong place. You can automate your back-office process and take cost out that way. But probably the biggest benefit is from a planning standpoint. Oftentimes a shipment is packed and ready to go at 10 o'clock in the morning. The bill of lading could be transmitted electronically at that time, and the carrier could use the information to plan its linehaul operation that night, six hours before making the pickup. In our present world, for 10,000 out of 14,000 shipments that we pick up every day, we're getting the information around six o'clock at night, when our drivers bring the paper bills back to our terminal. Theres a real bottom-line impact to Pitt Ohio getting this information earlier. And we're willing to gain-share that with our customers in the form of reduced freight rates.

SCB: What percentage of your customers actually do this digitally?

Sullivan: It varies by what you're offering. As soon as we started tracking our shipments on a real-time basis and communicating that out, customers had to sign up for a feature called proactive notification. And guess what? We were telling them too much. They want to be selective about when they're getting information. So we put an initiative in place to do electronic invoicing. That's a form of digitization, too. Within a year, we had 90% of our customers signed up for it.

SCB: How about digital bills of lading?

Sullivan: Thats where we still struggle. We're trying to get customers to give us the information electronically for all the reasons that Geoff discussed. But we're only at about a 10% to 15% adoption rate. Out of that, probably 5% of the bills come across digitally. So weve got a lot of work to do there, not only from a customer side but also from a carrier side.

Muessig: Shippers are very receptive to consuming digital information. The paradigm shift needs to be for information they share back in return. Its not the shippers fault; it's that carriers haven't done a good enough job of asking as an industry. We need to get out there and make the point that this is a better way to do business moving forward.

Sullivan: The whole subject of e-bills of lading is ripe territory for both shippers and carriers. Theres so much efficiency to be gained on both sides of the equation. When we get a paper document, until we get someone to key that into the system, we cant provide you with any information. But if they send it to us digitally, as soon we receive it we can tell them," We got it. Were doing your pickup. And pickup's completed.

SCB: How much of it has to do with whether a shipper has a transportation-management software [TMS] system? Does that make a lot of difference in their ability to go digital?

Muessig: It's the most obvious way to engage in the conversation, and exchange information digitally. But oftentimes the TMS is used only to consume information, and the ability to forward an electronic bill of lading either isn't turned on, or isnt even in older TMS models.

Sullivan: As the technology continues to evolve, it becomes easier to communicate updates back and forth. In fairness to shippers, their business can change during the day. What they thought they had at noon actually isnt available until three oclock. So they're a little hesitant about sending that information out. But the more information we can get upfront, the less back-office processing we have to do, and the sooner we can get it into the system.

SCB: The number of shippers who actually have a TMS is pretty low, right?

Muessig: It's somewhere around a third in the marketplace. But if you look at it from a numbers standpoint, its probably more than 50% of bills.

SCB: So are shippers waking up to the benefits of a TMS, and the digitization of their bills of lading?

Sullivan: I think they're waking up to the value of a TMS. I don't think they're there yet on digital bills of lading. I'm not really sure why it just seems to be a piece of the puzzle. If theres one gap in the digital supply chain for transportation, it's the bill of lading. It starts the whole shipping process.

SCB: They have to prioritize their IT investments, based on what they consider to be of value.

Muessig: Absolutely. And that's the intent of our conversation to create awareness that digital bills of lading can help shippers reduce their transportation costs over the long term.

Sullivan: Its done in the business-to-consumer world all the time. You place an order, you never talk to a soul, you track the order online, and you get it delivered. Why can't it happen in the B2B world? That's where we want to go in the carrier-shipper relationship.

Muessig: We talk about creating the virtual transportation company, to manage things like shipment-status updates. But there are gaps in our conversations with customers around exception reporting explaining that a shipment isn't going to delayed until tomorrow. We're working on creating that capability to make the shipper aware of it. Just this past year we began offering last-mile updates, which allow the shipper or its customer to track the shipment in the last hours before delivery, and get an ETA down to the minute.

Sullivan: In all fairness to the shippers, we're one of many carriers theyre using, so if they're getting this information from everyone, they just want the exception reporting. Tell me when it's not going to work.

SCB: No ones sitting in front of a screen tracking the progress of their freight mile by mile. They don't have the time, capability or the desire to do that.

Sullivan: Right. But with APIs [application programming interfaces], it's pretty cool technology. We have a customer where were feeding them statuses as soon as we update our own. They know everything we know, and so does the customer-service agent. When a customer calls in and wants to know where their shipment is at, they don't want to be put on hold, or have to go to our website and check it. They want it in their system. That's the direction we want to go long-term, to be able to integrate the carrier's data into the shipper's data.

SCB: In an ideal world, no one should have to be calling anyone. You should be able to access that information digitally.

Muessig: Except for escalated issues. There are always exceptions. That's the nature of transportation.

SCB: Do you think this is the state of the art with carriers in general these days?

Muessig: I think the marketplace is disparate. We might be more on the cutting edge in terms of using technology to take cost out, but the truth of the matter is that a digital bill of lading is extendable to many carriers in our industry. If a shipper can achieve better pricing with Pitt Ohio by offering us a digital bill of lading, theyll be able to do the same with our competitors.

Sullivan: It's always a catch-up game. But we continue to move toward the digital bill of lading, which can close the biggest gap in the shipper-carrier relationship. The good news is that the industry's starting to talk about it a lot more. Were making progress.
