Surgical robot built in Lincoln blasts off to International Space Station – KLKN

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) A surgical robot built by a Lincoln company got a glimpse of the stars Tuesday.

The robot along with other experiments, supplies and equipment was launched into space from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Virtual Incision, a startup company based at Nebraska Innovation Campus, created the miniaturized in vivo robotic assistant, also known as MIRA.

MIRA can perform abdominal surgeries in a minimally invasive manner, officials said.

Surgeons could also use the technology to perform procedures remotely.

NASA took an interest in the robot last year.

The robot is heading to the International Space Station, where it will help test remote surgery tasks.

Shane Farritor, Virtual Incisions co-founder, said the research will be a huge step toward what he calls telesurgery.

Well start by having the robot do a little bit by itself, but then later in the mission, were going to try and control it from Lincoln, Farritor said.

MIRA will collect data for Farritors team before it returns to Earth in the spring.

Russian official compares media claims that NATO is preparing for Russian offensive to "last year’s horoscope" – Yahoo News

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has responded to a leaked German plan for how the country would respond to a Russian hybrid assault on NATOs eastern flank, which it suggests might occur in July 2024.

Details: German tabloid Bild has leaked the details of what it claims to be a secret memo by the German Defence Ministry that outlines a possible "path to conflict" between Russia and NATO. The memo outlines Russias actions and the Wests response month by month, with Russia expected to launch hybrid assaults on European countries in the summer of 2024 and to start a full-scale war in the summer of 2025.

The memo envisions that Russia could use clashes in the Baltic states as a pretext to deploy troops and medium-range missile systems to Kaliningrad and could invade NATO countries during the US presidential elections.

The German Defence Ministrys Alliance Defence 2025 plan is allegedly set to be put in place in February 2024, as Germany considers it possible that Russia might launch a new offensive in Ukraine in the spring.

Quote from Zakharova: "I read Germanys secret plan that was leaked to Bild, an information gutter. Its like a mighty horoscope from last year for Pisces in Cancer. I suppose that the analysis was undertaken by the German Foreign Ministry headed by [Annalena] Baerbock."

Previously: Russian officials denied Russia was preparing to invade Ukraine ahead of the full-scale invasion. For the past two years, Russia has referred to its war against Ukraine as a "special military operation". It also denies it intends to launch an attack on NATO, but NATO countries are still preparing for a possible Russian invasion on NATOs eastern flank.

COVID, RSV and Flu cases on the rise in Berks County – 69News WFMZ-TV

READING, Pa. - Respiratory illness numbers are going up across the country following holiday gatherings.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of this past week, flu activity is high in Pennsylvania, and very high in New Jersey.

In our very own region, "We are seeing more cases of respiratory illnesses." says Dr. Debra Powell, chief of infectious diseases at Tower Health, "Be aware that most of our hospitals are close to capacity a number of days we have been over capacity and have had to open up additional beds for patients."

Many of those beds are filled with patients needing care for Covid, RSV and the flu. "We are primarily seeing the high-risk age groups which are those people of older ages and also people with chronic medical conditions like diabetes, lung diseases, heart diseases." says Dr. Powell.

Dr. Debra Powell of Tower Health says the rise in cases is expected. "I think we're seeing about the same number we saw this time last year maybe about an extra 10 patients." says Dr. Powell, well below numbers from 2 or 3 years ago, but she still urges people to do their best to avoid getting sick.

"Be up to date on your vaccine, if you're sick please stay home, call your primary care physician if you need additional testing or treatment." says Dr. Powell.

Dr. Powell recommends getting the new omicron covid vaccine released in September as well as your flu shot.

The good news is, "What we're seeing with RSV is those numbers have come down it has plateaued." says Dr. Powell.

How long will the spike last? "We will see flu probably till after the spring hopefully it'll peak and then start to tamper down." says Dr. Powell, "We don't know what happens with covid, it depends on the strains that are circulating."

Her prediction is that it'll peak by mid-January and go down, but time will tell the doctor says.

Surrounded by lush jungles and a little more tucked away from the more popular archeological sites in the region, Muyil will make you feel at one with nature, away from the busyness of hotel zones and shopping malls.

The 55-foot pyramid known as El Castillo is a stand-out structure, different from any other historical site in the Mexican Caribbean, alongside other ancient pyramids and ruins which are covered by the luscious jungle mangroves as its backdrop.

Among them lies a path from El Castillo which leads to the biggest attraction at the site; the Muyil Lagoon.

Once you have explored the ancient ruins, you can escape the hot Mexican sun and find some peace and tranquillity here, with guided boat tours on offer if you so wish.

Saving the best for last, Chichn Itz is the undisputed, most popular archeological site in the Mexican Caribbean.

Now considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, this breathtaking location will give you an insight into the technologically advanced architecture that was built by ancient Mayan civilizations to create jaw-dropping pyramids, temples, and structures that have stood the test of time.
