East Rennell Region in Solomon Islands Placed On UN List of World Heritage in Danger New York, Jun 18 2013 – The East Rennell area in the Solomon Islands was inscribed today on the United Nations Scientific, Cultural, and Educational Organizations (UNESCO) list of endangered sites due to logging that is affecting the islands ecosystem. The UNESCO World Heritage Committee determined that logging is threatening the outstanding universal value of East Rennell, and asked the national authorities to provide an impact assessment study of this activity, which is taking place outside the sites core area, UNESCO said in a news release. East Rennell is the largest raised coral atoll in the world and its dense forest has a canopy averaging 20 metres in height. Continue reading

Solomon Islands Commissions Solar Home Systems Project With kerosene, diesel and coconut shells as sources of lighting for their homes, the residents of Kiu village on the island of Malaita in Solomon Islands were truly emotional when celebrating the completed installation of 180 solar home systems during the official commissioning of the Rural Electrification Via Solar Homes Systems in the Solomon Islands Project. The Kiu community are the first recipients of the US$3.99 million, which involves the installation of 2,000 solar home systems that will provide significant benefits to rural areas and outer islands in the eight provinces around Solomon Islands who will now have access to power for lighting and basic electrical appliances. The project, developed and implemented by the Government of Solomon Islands, is funded through the Pacific Environment Community (PEC) Fund, contributed by the Government of Japan and administered by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS). WSPA Disaster Response Team in Solomon Islands

Following the 8.0 earthquake and tsunami in Solomon Islands on Wednesday, WSPA teams in the region have been on high alert and ready to help stray and injured animals and assist with the limited veterinary capacity on the islands. As a result, WSPA has now deployed two members of its Disaster Response Team to Santa Cruz Islands in southern Solomon Islands, to determine how the disaster has affected local animal populations and what response is required. Animals are often the forgotten victims of disasters, but they too suffer the immediate dangers and terrible aftermaths of unexpected and violent events. Continue reading
