NASA probe reveals organics, ice on Mercury

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) – Despite searing daytime temperatures, Mercury, the planet closest to the sun, has ice and frozen organic materials inside permanently shadowed craters in its north pole, NASA scientists said on Thursday. Earth-based telescopes have been compiling evidence for ice on Mercury for 20 years, but the finding of organics was a surprise, say researchers with NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft, the first probe to orbit Mercury. Both ice and organic materials, which are similar to tar or coal, were believed to have been delivered millions of years ago by comets and asteroids crashing into the planet. Continue reading

Scientists Develop Cyborg Tissue, Bring The Borg Closer to Reality

Old hat cybernetics: Locutus as featured in ‘Star Trek: First Contact.’ [Credit: Paramount Pictures]Weve just gotten to grafting an anatomically correct robotic arm on to a human, but clearly that wasn’t enough: Harvard University researchers have already created a real piece of cyborg tissue. The researchers developed the first truly cybernetic piece of living tissue by combining nanowires with lab-grown flesh into indistinguishable mesh. The researchers say that this is the first time they have been able to completely integrate electronics into a biological system Continue reading

PlantBricks

The iGEM team that I helped advise a couple years ago recently published a short paper about their project in the Journal of Biological Engineering (open access!). We were inspired to think about plant engineering in the context of iGEM and standardized genetic parts, in part thanks to an interesting passage in Stewart Brands book Whole Earth Discipline. In his chapter on genetic engineering, Brand writes: One can imagine organic crops biotically engineered as Rachel Carson might do it. Continue reading

Happy birthday, New England Journal of Medicine!

By Chelsea Conaboy, Globe Staff In 1819, French physician Ren Laennec published a description of the cacophony of sick lungs, deciphered with his new invention: the stethoscope. Some 18 months later, doctors in New England read about his discoveries, delivered across the sea and by horseback to their offices in one of the early editions of what would become the venerable New England Journal of Medicine. Laennecs discoveries altered the practice of medicine in a way so fundamental that we see the effects each time our doctor listens to the sounds in our chest Continue reading
