Radio astronomy cranks up in WA's Mid West

A precursor to the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio astronomy project in Western Australia’s Mid West region is being readied to commence full operations next month. The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is part of the growing Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory in a remote part of the state’s Mid West where radio frequency interference is virtually non-existent. Construction of the $51 million MWA was completed in December and it is now days away from being ready to start producing vast amounts of data. Continue reading

Hubble stays relevant on astronomy's high frontier

Despite steady advances in ground-based astronomy, the Hubble Space Telescope, with its famously flawed mirror, its equally famed redemption and more than two decades as an icon of world-class science, is more productive today than at any point in its history, scientists say. Continue reading

Can NASA's Planet-Hunting Kepler Mission Be Saved?

There’s a chance that NASA’s Kepler space telescope can recover from the malfunction that has halted its wildly successful search for alien planets, mission team members say. The second of Kepler’s four reaction wheels devices that allow the observatory to maintain its position in space has failed, depriving Kepler of the ability to lock precisely onto its 150,000-plus target stars, NASA oficials announced Wednesday (May 15). But mission engineers are not conceding that Kepler’s planet-hunting days have come to an end, vowing to try their best to recover the failed reaction wheels over the coming weeks. Continue reading

UC astronomy camp participant invited to NASA space camp

A Burnside High School student has just been accepted as one of two New Zealand year 13 students to attend a week-long NASA International Space Camp this year. Tom Marsh, who recently took part in the Aurora Astronomy School run by the University of Canterbury (UC), will attend the camp in Hunstville, Alabama, in July. He will be experiencing what it is like to train for a mission to space, zero gravity and other space travel related activities Continue reading
