Donald Trump’s ‘miracle drug’ for COVID killed nearly 17000 people, reveals new study – Hindustan Times

A drug promoted by former US President Donald Trump to cure COVID-19 has been linked to nearly 17,000 deaths, according to a new study. During the COVID pandemic, Trump urged Americans to take hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), an anti-malaria medicine that is also often used to cure rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, claiming that he himself had been taking the miracle drug.

After the outbreak of coronavirus, scientists suggested that HCQ could be effective in treating the deadly virus. On March 28, 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug for an emergency use authorisation and started clinical trials.

While one scientist called the HCQ a "magic bullet" against coronavirus, Trump highlighted the "miracle" recovery made by a COVID infected woman after using the drug.

"The nice part is, it's been around for a long time...if things don't go as planned, it's not going to kill anybody," the ex-US president said during a COVID Taskforce briefing. In a tweet on March 21, 2020, he said that "FDA has moved mountains" and that the drug would be put to use "immediately" as an antidote to curb Covid transmission.

However in June 2020, the FDA revoked the emergency use authorisation of the drug as several studies, including one by New England Journal of Medicine, found HCQ had no benefit on COVID and led to significant surge in the risk of death. The FDA revoked the emergency use authorization on June 15, 2020.

A new study conducted by French researchers has found that nearly 17,000 people across six countries may have died after being prescribed hydroxychloroquine while hospitalized with the illness from March to July 2020 during the first wave of COVID. The research published in the February issue of Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy shows that increase in the number of deaths was driven by side effects like heart arrhythmia and muscle weakness.

The countries studied were the US, Turkey, Belgium, France, Spain, and Italy.

The US reported the highest numbers of deaths with 12,739, followed by Spain (1,895 deaths), Italy (1,822 deaths), Belgium (240 deaths), France (199 deaths), and Turkey (95 deaths).

The scientists analysed various studies that tracked hospitalisations due to COVID-19 and exposure to the drug and risk related to it.

The researchers said that the number of deaths could be much higher as their study only looked at only six countries between March and July 2020.

‘Infestation ’88’ changes title following claims of Neo-Nazi symbols – NME

Upcoming horror gameInfestation 88has been renamed following backlash over alleged neo-Nazi references in the title.

The game is based on Steamboat Willie, one of the earliest cartoons to feature the character of Mickey Mouse. The cartoon entered the public domain days ago, meaning that it can be used in projects without fear of being sued by Disney.

After claims online thatInfestation 88contains references to neo-nazi symbolism (primarily due to the number 88 in the title being used as code by neo-Nazis for a historic Nazi salute along with several messages from users of the games Discord server), the developer has changed the title to Infestation Origins.

Developer Nightmare Forge Games released a statement to IGN, confirming that the name was originally supposed to simply be a reference in the year 1988 when the game is set.

Unfortunately, at this time of its announcement, we were unaware of any additional meanings the number 88 has. Through feedback from the community, we learned it did, and therefore made this name change ASAP, the statement reads.

We want to apologise for our ignorance on this topic and appreciate that it was brought to our attention so we could address it. There is no intentional use of Nazi symbolism in our game nor studio, and well continue to address any concerns as they arise. We strongly stand against Nazism and hate in any form.

The trailer for the game also came under fire for seemingly using assets from the Unity Store in a similar way to other games, as noted byMotherboard.

Motherboardalso noted that the voiceover used in the trailer sounded like AI, with a spokesperson for the developer confirming this suspicion.

Given that was an initial announcement trailer, and due to time constraints, we did utilize a premium version of Elevenlabs AI as a placeholder until we hire real voice actors for the actual in-game voice narrations, the developer said toMotherboard.

In other gaming news, modders are working to bringThe Day Beforeback following the announcement that the game is closing.

Officials Begin Inspections Of Airbnbs in The Mexican Caribbean To Ensure Tourist Safety – The Cancun Sun

Share The Article

All-inclusive resorts are undoubtedly the most popular type of lodging in the Mexican Caribbean, with hundreds of options spread out along the coast, but Airbnbs are popular too.

There are more than 40,000 Airbnb and other vacation rental units available throughout the region, and although thats less than half of the number of hotel rooms, vacation rentals are the second most popular choice.

Up until now, there hasnt been as much regulation with Airbnbs as there is with hotels, but now officials will begin inspections of Airbnbs in the Mexican Caribbean to ensure tourist safety.

There are several things that officials are going to be looking for when inspecting Airbnbs in the Mexican Caribbean.

First, they will be checking to make sure that the Airbnb renter has the required licenses.

They will also be checking for safety issues, ensuring that all vacation rentals have safety equipment like smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers.

While licenses are more of a way to keep track of Airbnbs than they are a safety issue, its still important for vacation rental renters to follow the rules.

More importantly, though, is ensuring the safety of tourists.

Just last year three Americans died in a Mexico City Airbnb due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, and this isnt the first case of this in vacation rentals.

Inspecting rentals can help protect against these tragedies.

Cancun has the most Airbnbs because it is the largest and most popular destination in the Mexican Caribbean.

Tulum, a destination that will likely become even more popular with the arrival of the Tulum Airport and the Maya Train, is up there in Airbnb numbers too.

Playa del Carmen, a popular vacation destination about an hour south of Cancun, as well as the island of Cozumel which is just off of the coast of Playa del Carmen, are also home to a lot of vacation rentals.

There are a few reasons some travelers choose Airbnbs over hotels when traveling to the Mexican Caribbean.

The biggest reason is that there is more space, which is particularly beneficial for those traveling in groups.

Additionally, some travelers like having the option of cooking their meals, especially visitors staying for an extended period.

Last but not least, Airbnbs can be an affordable option, which is appealing to many travelers.

With so many Airbnbs to choose from in the Mexican Caribbean, it can be difficult making the choice.

A few tips for picking Airbnbs can help you find the right one.

This will help ensure that you have a positive experience while on your Mexican Caribbean vacation.

Even though Airbnbs are popular, all-inclusives are still the number one choice in the Mexican Caribbean.

All-inclusive resorts make it easier for travelers to budget for a vacation because food, beverages, entertainment, and other amenities are all included.

While all-inclusives used to get a bad rep for having mediocre food and cheap liquor, they have come a long way, with many offering gourmet dining options and premium beverages.

The number of Airbnbs in the Mexican Caribbean is expected to grow.

Numerous buildings are in the works in the region that are specifically destined to be Airbnb units.

If an Airbnb is your choice for your Mexican Caribbean vacation you can be confident that there are many to choose from, and that soon they will be safer than ever.
