NASA Spacecraft Discovers Particle Accelerator at Saturn

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft has spotted solar particles moving at incredible speeds near Saturn, giving scientists a rare up-close look at phenomena that occur during dramatic star explosions. The particles flowed from the sun during a strong blast of solar wind, then plowed into Saturn’s magnetic field shortly thereafter. This encounter, which Cassini observed in February 2007, created a shockwave that accelerated the particles to super-high energies, scientists said Continue reading

Stretchable Batteries Could Power Cyborg Future

Our cyborg future may not be far off. An ultra-stretchy battery could one day be used to power bionic eyeballs, brain-wave monitoring devices and robotic skins, new research suggests. The new device, which embeds tiny lithium-based batteries in a silicon sheet, can stretch up to three times its initial length and could be recharged wirelessly, Yonggang Huang, study co-author and a mechanical engineer at Northwestern University, wrote to LiveScience in an email Continue reading

:: 24, Jan 2013 :: NEW HYDROGEL FROM THE INSTITUTE OF BIOENGINEERING AND NANOTECHNOLOGY AND IBM DESTROYS SUPERBUGS AND …

New Hydrogel from the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology and IBM Destroys Superbugs and Drug-Resistant Biofilms Novel antimicrobial hydrogel prevents antibiotic-resistant microbes from forming on wounds, medical devices and implants Singapore, January 24, 2013 Researchers from the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) and IBM Research today unveiled the first-ever antimicrobial hydrogel that can break apart biofilms and destroy multidrug-resistant superbugs upon contact. Tests have demonstrated the effectiveness of this novel synthetic material in eliminating various types of bacteria and fungi that are leading causes of microbial infections, and preventing them from developing antibiotic resistance. This discovery may be used in wound healing, medical device and contact lens coating, skin infection treatment and dental fillings Continue reading
