NASA / JPL-Caltech A Martian view from one of Curiosity’s hazard avoidance cameras, transmitted back to Earth on Thursday, shows the shadow of the instrument turret on the rover’s robotic arm. By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News NASA’s Curiosity rover is back in business after a weeks-long communication gap caused by solar interference. The proof comes in the form of pictures transmitted back to Earth on Thursday from the 1-ton machine’s vantage point at Yellowknife Bay on Mars. Continue reading

NASA: Mars Curiosity Ready to Roam, Shoot Lasers
With the Mars Curiosity rover’s science instruments working well, NASA engineers are getting ready for two big tests of their robotic rover — blasting a rock with a laser beam and getting the rover moving. Curiosity’s first drive will be a very short one. Before the rover starts any meaningful trek across the Martian surface, scientists will first simply drive it forward and back in the landing area, to test the wheels and motor system, according to John Grotzinger, a project scientist with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a geology professor at the California Institute of Technology Continue reading
NASA 'Itching to Move,' Maps Course for Curiosity
NASA’s newest rover Curiosity has yet to make its first move on Mars, but scientists said Tuesday they are already mapping out possible driving routes to a Martian mountain. Since landing in Gale Crater near the equator last week, the nuclear-powered rover has been busy getting a head-to-wheel health checkup while parked. It touched down about 5 miles from Mount Sharp where signatures of past water have been spotted at the base. Continue reading
NASA Releases New Stunning Images of Mars Curiosity Rover
NASA officials today released new images taken by and of the Mars Curiosity rover as it makes its way around Gale Crater. Several images were captured by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which is flying above the Red Planet. Continue reading
NASA releases video of Mars rover descent
NASA’s Curiosity rover has transmitted a low-resolution video showing the last 2 1/2 minutes of its white-knuckle dive through the Mars atmosphere, giving Earthlings a sneak peek of a spacecraft landing on another world. As thumbnails of the video flashed on a big screen on Monday, scientists and engineers at the NASA Jet Propulsion let out “oohs” and “aahs”. Continue reading
