Three teams in the Sparta Middle School robotics program made it to the finals of the state competition and one is going on to the 2024 VEX Robotics World Championship.

That team, with three returning members from last year, placed second in states and won the Design Award, which qualified them for the world competition.

This is the programs second year competing.

Last year, five student groups competed for the first time in the VEX IQ Robotics season. Two teams made it to states and one team advanced to the 2023 VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas.

This years team is asking for donations to help fund their trip to the world championships.

Dave Murrow (AeroEngr BS’84) | Ann and H.J. Smead Aerospace Engineering Sciences – University of Colorado Boulder

Dave Murrow retired in 2023, capping a 36-year career serving the space exploration community. In retirement, he sits on NASAs Planetary Science Advisory committee, works with the Colorado state economic development office, and has established a consulting business, Space Connections.

Murrows most recent professional role was as the leader of Lockheed Martins Deep Space Exploration Business Development team. He worked with executives, communicators, and program execution teams to develop a multi-mission, 7-year backlog in the DSE market segment. He served in similar roles for the Lockheed Martin Human Spaceflight Advanced Programs team and for the Ball Aerospace Space Science and Exploration team.

At Lockheed Martin, he worked towards an expansive vision of exploration by designing human missions to the Moon, Mars, and asteroids. At Ball, he expanded the companys NASA footprint through pursuit of NASA science, technology, and human exploration missions.

Murrow joined industry after 13 years with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he began as an orbit determination analyst for the Galileo mission to Jupiter and served as the Cassini Mission Systems Engineer. Beckoned by Mars, he participated in the contract award, flight system development of the twin Mars '98 spacecraft. Adding the Stardust mission to Mars Climate Orbiter and Mars Polar lander, he managed the successful 3-peat launch campaign between December 1998 and February 1999.

His JPL role followed aerospace engineering degrees at the University of Texas at Austin (MS 87), and the University of Colorado Boulder (BS 84, Honors). In Austin, he worked at the Universitys Center for Space Research, supporting high precision Earth gravity field development for the Topex mission. In 2003, Murrow inaugurated a graduate semester class in Interplanetary Mission Design in CU Boulder Aerospace. Over the last decade, he has also lectured on Launch Vehicles for CU Boulders unique Space Minor program.

A native of Boulder, Colorado, Dave now lives in Highlands Ranch with his wife, and has two grown daughters. He spends his free time traveling, reading, skiing, and hiking in the mountains.

Airbus launches OpenCargoLab to improve airfreight – Aerospace Testing International

Airbus has launched the OpenCargoLab consortium with airlines and cargo carriers to digitalize and improve airfreight processes.

The collaboration aims to improve efficiencies across the whole airfreight ecosystem and involves CHAMP Cargosystems, Fraport, KLM Cargo, Kuehne+Nagel and Swissport.

OpenCargoLab will evaluate technology such as augmented reality and robotics to optimize data connectivity in general and, for example, the transport of dangerous goods in particular.

It will also contribute to the A350Fs further design and application development.

The findings developed at the OpenCargoLab, will be tested at Airbus Cargo competence site in Bremen, Germany. Among others, a replica of the A350F fuselage with the large cargo door included will be installed at the sites new Cargo Test Center by the end of this year.

This represents more than 25% of global demand for 1,490 cargo aircraft in the above 40 tonne segment.

Airbus has 50 orders from nine customers for the A350F.

Everyone finds their own way to use the site. For some it is a game, for others it is a whole unknown world, for others it is a way of meeting people. I think its great that such a simple thing can be useful to many, Andrey explained the reason for the popularity of his resource.

Media experts believe that the reason for the popularity may be the mesmerizing expectation of something unusual when you press the next button (although what you see on the screen at first can be shocking and almost crushing). Or this is entertainment of a new generation, incomprehensible to those who are accustomed to sorting information on the Internet and limiting themselves to certain boundaries.

Ascent Solar Technologies to fly space solar modules on NASA’s upcoming LISA-T mission SatNews – SatNews

Ascent Solar Technologies (Nasdaq: ASTI) has announced that the Companys solar module products will fly on NASAs upcoming Lightweight Integrated Solar Array and AnTenna (LISA-T) mission, scheduled for launch this summer.

The mission, led by NASAs Space Technology Mission Directorate and the agencys Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, will demonstrate the capability to deploy large-area arrays on lightweight, low-cost and small spacecraft.

LISA-T is the fourth mission in NASAs Pathfinder Technology Demonstrator (PTD) series of missions evaluating novel, small spacecraft capabilities on orbit. Managed by NASAs Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, these demonstration missions facilitate the direct infusion of new technologies into the agencys future science and exploration missions.

LISA-T (PTD-4)s solar arrays are lower mass and stowed volume, and produce three times more power than alternative PV solutions traded within the system envelope. PTD-4s deployable solar arrays are designed to scale larger than the missions CubeSat form factor with options capable of generating kilowatts of power to small spacecraft.

Leading up to this spacecraft demonstration, Ascents PV products were previously evaluated on the International Space Station. Modules tested on NASAs MISSE-X experiment validated the resilience of the companys CIGS material in the space environment, both bare and encapsulated. Additional Ascent modules with lower-cost and lighter-weight laminates are being evaluated on the upcoming MISSE payload slated to fly on SpaceXs 30th Commercial Resupply Mission to the space station scheduled for March.

Selection for this upcoming space mission is the culmination of years of Ascents work with NASA to optimize the PV modules that enabled LISA-Ts ambitious spacecraft mass and power budgets to close, said Paul Warley, CEO of Ascent Solar Technologies. This mission will demonstrate that previously unachievable spacecraft requirements can in fact be met. It also provides a shining example of the benefits of public-private partnerships that leverage new and innovative commercial technologies, as NASA programs like MISSE & PTD lead the way for even more capable spacecraft for government and commercial space missions. The modules developed for LISA-T informed the design of Ascents Titan line of space products, facilitating further maximization of power generation to the extent that spacecraft can produce kilowatts per kilogram of array in the space environment with minimal degradation over the life of the mission.

Tech Installs and Maintenance for Crew Ahead of Cargo Launch – NASA Blogs

Equipment installs and station maintenance topped the in-orbit schedule aboard the International Space Station on Tuesday. The Expedition 70 crew members expanded on work that began yesterday while completing some maintenance around station as they await the arrival of an upcoming cargo craft.

The Progress 87 cargo craft is scheduled tolaunchfrom the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 10:25 p.m. EST on Wednesday, Feb. 14.Loaded with nearly three tons of food, fuel, and supplies, Progress will dock to the station around 1:12 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17.

As one cargo resupply ship readies for launch, two cosmonautsOleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chubwere on duty last night, Feb. 12, to monitor the departure of the Progress 85 cargo craft. Progress undocked from the orbital lab at 9:09 p.m. before it reentered Earths atmosphere three hours later and harmlessly burned up over the Pacific Ocean.

Kononenko and Chub had a light duty day afterward, focusing on cargo audits and preparations for future experiments.

Meanwhile, ESA (European Space Agency) Commander Andreas Mogensen spent the bulk of his day working in the Nanoracks Bishop Airlock. He installed the Nanoracks-GITAI S2 modular robotic arm, which demonstrates the design, build, and operations of extravehicular robotic systems. This tech demonstration aims to aid in the development of robots for in-space assembly and manufacturing, supporting future commercial lunar missions.

NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli spent her day on a few different tasks, collecting blood pressure data for the Vascular Aging investigation, stowing the Bio-Monitor garment and headband she donned yesterday, and collecting atmosphere samples throughout the station.

NASA astronaut Loral OHara assisted Mogensen with the Nanoracks-GITAI S2 install before photographing Plant-Microbe Interactions in Space (APEX-10) petri plates, which launched aboard Northrop Grummans 20th commercial resupply mission to the station. The new investigation examines whether beneficial microbes can mitigate some of the negative effects the space environment can have on plant growth and development.

In the Kibo Laboratory, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) Flight Engineer Satoshi Furukawa spent his day recording space demonstrations suggested by students for JAXAs Try Zero-Gravity educational activity. Students can vote for and suggest tasks for JAXA astronauts to carry out on station, such as putting in eye drops, performing push-ups on the ceiling, and more, to allow the youth to interact with station residents and learn about living and working in microgravity.

In the Roscosmos segment, Flight Engineer Konstantin Borisov completed some orbital maintenance tasks and ran a distillation cycle on the Roscosmos water management system.

CES 2024: This AI-powered exoskeleton can help you trek further, run faster and carry more – Tom’s Guide

If youve ever dreamed of being a human cyborg, like Inspector Gadget or Robocop, Ive got some good news. Robotics startup Hypershell just unveiled its new ProX exoskeleton at CES 2024. This all-terrain, AI-assisted apparatus attaches to the legs and powers movement with a one-horsepower motor. Think of it as an e-assist for your lower body.

Built for outdoor adventurers and runners, its designed to help users trek further and run faster using what Hypershell calls an AI-based motion engine that adapts to individual body styles and movements. Heres everything you need to know about the new Hypershell ProX.

The Hypershell ProX attaches to a users waist and thighs via adjustable straps. Power comes from an 800-watt (1-horsepower) motor, and users can dial in just how much assistance they want. At maximum power, you can cruise at speeds up to 12.4mph, which is quite fast for a human.

In addition to hiking and running, the ProX can be used for assistance while biking and even climbing. And its not just for increasing range and speed. For backpackers, in particular, the Hypershell ProX offsets up to 66 pounds of carried weight to help reduce fatigue.

The exoskeleton has nine joints. One is active or connected to the motor, and the other eight are passive. Hypershell notes that this design gives users an enormous range of movement.

With an IP54 rating, the ProX can be operated in light rain or snow. Sadly, this likely excludes using the devices while skiing or snowboarding. Still, it can be operated in temperatures as low as negative four degrees Fahrenheit.

Power comes from a hot-swappable 14.8-volt battery. One fully charged pack should provide enough juice for up to 16 miles of trekking or eight hours of use. The charge time is roughly four hours. When not in use, the 4.4-pound Hypershell ProX can be folded down and carried in a backpack or bag.

As an avid hiker and occasional jogger, Im super stoked to get these AI-driven robot legs in and take a walk on the cyborg side. Will it allow me to finally keep up with my peak-tagging, early-morning-rising mountain climbing friends? Time will tell, but we hope to do a review soon.

The Hypersell ProX exoskeleton is available for preorder now, starting at $799. Orders are expected to start shipping in May.

A GROUNDBREAKING new sci-fi space plane is gearing up for orbit as it undergoes final tests.

NASA and Sierra Space's Dream Chaser - the world's only commercial spacecraft - is slated to head to the International Space Station in the first half of 2024.

It will take to the skies with a cargo module known as Shooting Star.

Tenacity - the first in the new fleet of Dream Chaser spaceplanes - has been dubbed the "uncrewed spiritual successor to the Space Shuttle".

Unlike traditional ocean landings, the first-ever winged commercial spacecraft will be able to land on runways - just like the Space Shuttle did.

At 30ft long,its roughly a quarter of the length of the space shuttle orbiters - and can be reused up to 15 times.

It was picked by NASA to deliver, return and dispose of cargo for the International Space Station - carrying critical supplies like food, water, and science experiments.

Commercial space firm Sierra Space said it is "ushering in the next era of space exploration with its revolutionary fleet of Dream Chaser spaceplanes".

Tenacity - the firstof the Dream Chaserspaceplanes - will provide a minimum of seven cargo missions to and from the space station.

It was delivered to NASA's Neil Armstrong Test Facility in Sandusky, Ohio for final testing in mid-December.

The space plane will be stacked on top of the Shooting Star cargo module and undergo rigorous environmental testing.

The test will recreate the extreme vibrations and conditions similar to those experienced during both launch and re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, NASA said.

The spacecraft will be carried by a ULA Vulcan Centaur rocket and is scheduled to launch from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The Dream Chaser spacecrafts will be engineered to be reused - and compatible with a variety of launch vehicles.

Sierra Space CEO Tom Vice said: "At Sierra Space, we are ushering in the next industrial revolution with a business and technology platform that provides our customers with a complete turn-key solution offering space as a service.

"Our platform includes Dream Chaser, a revolutionary, highly reusable commercial spaceplane with global runway access, and the first business-ready commercial space station."

He said the design "will exponentially decrease the cost of product development and manufacturing in space".

Dream Chaser can be customised for both domestic and international customers for global operation.

NASA said the Shooting Star cargo module is specifically designed to "support delivery and disposal of pressurised and unpressurised cargo to and from the space station".

"The cargo module can be used only once and is disposed of prior to re-entry," the space agency said.

The 15ft Shooting Star cargo attachment can deliver up to 5,000kg of cargo into orbit.

The spacecraft is scheduled to spend around 45 days at the space station on its first trip.

In readiness for Dream Chaser missions to the space station, multiple NASA astronaut crews have visited Sierra Space facilities for training, Sierra Space said.

A second Dream Chaser is already in production at the companys manufacturing base in Colorado.

It comes after NASA successfully tested a new type of rocket engine that could one day get us to Mars quicker.

The engine - called the Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE) - uses a new way of burning fuel to produce thrust.

Instead of burning fuel in a continuous stream, the RDRE detonates it in a series of explosions, as shown in a newvideo.

This is meant to create a more efficient and powerful burn - which could propel spacecraft toMarsin as little as four months.

Typically, it takes current engines around six months to reach theRed Planet.

Isro tests futurist fuel cell system that could power space station – IndiaTimes

BENGALURU: Isro Friday said it has successfully tested a futuristic fuel cell based power system that could help power the proposed space station while also holding the potential for significant societal applications. The 100W class Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell based Power System (FCPS) was tested in space on the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module or POEM, launched onboard PSLV-C58 on January 1. Fuel cell is an ideal power source for the Space Station as it provides both power and pure water. The objective of the experiment was to assess Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel cell operation in space and to collect data to facilitate the design of systems for future missions. During the short duration test onboard POEM, 180W power was generated from Hydrogen and Oxygen gases stored onboard in high-pressure vessels, Isro said.

The ability to produce electricity directly from fuels without any intermediate step renders them very efficient, the space agency said, adding that with water as the only byproduct, they are totally emission free. These features make them ideal candidates for space missions involving humans where electric power, water and heat are essential since a single system can meet multiple requirements in the mission. Fuel Cells also possess significant societal application potential, Isro said. They are also considered to be the most appropriate solution to replace the engines of various type of vehicles in use today and to power standby power systems. Fuel Cells can provide range and fuel recharge time equaling that of todays conventional engine, which gives them a distinct advantage over batteries, and are expected to facilitate emission free transportation. Fuel cell is an ideal power source for the Space Station as it provides both power and pure water, Isro said.

The Ramanujan Universe - a supercomputer was inaugurated at Jaypee Institute of Information Technology (JIIT) to help the Engineering students pursue cutting edge research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). The supercomputing facility was inaugurated by Rajive Kumar, member secretary, AICTE on the National Mathematics Day.

This newly developed High Performance Supercomputing Center(HPC) facility has eight A 100Graphics Processing Unit(GPU) cards accelerated nodes, six compute nodes, more than 3500 GB RAM and 100 GB InfiniBand connectivity. The supercomputer has been developed with the help of technical expertise provided by Dell. The cost ofRs10crore has been incurred to develop this high computing facility.

Speaking to Education Times, on the sidelines of launch event, BR Mehta, vice-chancellor, JIIT, Noida, says, Introduction of the supercomputer will enable undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students to solve complex mathematical problems, algorithms and more. Several students involved in AI and ML research can use the supercomputer. In addition to the regular curriculum, we would encourage the students to use the supercomputer for research in healthcare, data analysis, data Science and cyber security."

Rajive Kumar, member secretary, AICTE, says, The supercomputing facility will be beneficial to all Engineering students as computing is the major component of their curricula. Besides the computer engineering students, students from mechanical stream can use this to create Computer Aided Design and Drafting technology (CADD) technology. Students can take the help of this supercomputer to complete their online internships and projects. This high-powered supercomputing facility will revolutionise the engineering education in the country. This is the second college which has introduced a facility of high-powered supercomputing after IIT Delhi in North India.
