Galileo: The Jovian Laboratory circa 1989 NASA Galileo Jupiter Orbiter more at scitech.quickfound.net “This video presentation gives a pre-launch description of the Galileo Mission to Jupiter.” Public domain film from NASA, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). creativecommons.org en.wikipedia.org Galileo was an orbiter and entry probe for Jupiter mdash;an unmanned NASA spacecraft which studied planet Jupiter and its moons, as well as the several other solar system bodies. Fermi’s GBM Finds Radio Bursts from TGFs – Video
Fermi's GBM Finds Radio Bursts from TGFs Lightning in the clouds is directly linked to events that produce some of the highest-energy light naturally made on Earth: terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs). An instrument aboard NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope was recently fine-tuned to better catch TGFs, and this allowed scientists to discover that TGFs emit radio waves, too. Continue reading

Total Solar Eclipse once in a lifetime event captured in Australia Video of Total Eclipse in Sidney Australia SYDNEY mdash; From boats bobbing on the Great Barrier Reef, to hot air balloons hovering over the rainforest, and the hilltops and beaches in between, tens of thousands of scientists, tourists and amateur astronomers watched as the sun, moon and Earth aligned and plunged northern Australia into darkness during a total solar eclipse Wednesday. Time lapse: Helvetia’s Dream | Bad Astronomy
Oh my, another lovely night sky (and landscape!) time lapse video; this time from Alessandro Della Bella, and called Helvetias Dream: [Make sure you set it to hi-def and make it full screen.] I love the opening shot! Unless it was just digitally zoomed, it must have taken some planning; you have to know just where the Moon is going to rise to catch it that accurately. A couple of other things to watch for, too: At about 45 seconds in, a bright meteor leaves a long persistent train, a glowing trail that gets blown away by the thin but rapid winds 100 kilometers above the Earths surface. I actually gasped when I saw that! At 1:30 you see the stars of Orion setting behind the Matterhorn, zoomed in Continue reading
