Graphical identification of cancer-associated gene subnetworks based on small proteomics data sets – Video

Graphical identification of cancer-associated gene subnetworks based on small proteomics data sets Proteomics is a rapidly emerging frontier in postgenomics medicine and biology but the quantitative analysis and validation of proteomic data are in need of further improvements. Before selecting potential candidate proteomic biomarkers, it is important to understand the broader context of how biological processes are regulated under different conditions or in different phenotypes Continue reading

Presentation- iValue: The Biological Pacemaker 3929 – Video

Presentation- iValue: The Biological Pacemaker 3929 Columbia University is developing a biological pacemaker for human use, offering a cure, rather than the palliation provided by electronic pacemakers, for heart arrhythmia. It uses encapsulated stem cells transfected with the pacemaking gene, which is a path-breaking approach to the treatment of disease. The presenting organization has assembled an intellectual property portfolio of a dozen essential patents and know-how on related nanotechnology; a consortium of top US and EU scientists/clinicians including access to clinical trial facilities; government grants from an EU country; and executives with US Food and Drug Administration and European regulatory experience. Ray Kurzweil’s new book predicts development of a super ‘digital brain’

Futurist Ray Kurzweil optimistically predicts much longer life expectancies, cures for cancer and heart disease, flying cars and robot butlers. Humans will become capable of feats that now seem impossible for many of us, in our lifetime in large part due to expected advances in brain research, posits the inventor and author in his new book, How to Create a Mind: The Secret of Human Thought Revealed, due out next month Continue reading

Tests confirm oil on beaches came from BP spill

Laboratory tests show that globs of oil found on two Louisiana beaches after Hurricane Isaac came from the 2010 BP spill. Tests run by Louisiana State University for state wildlife officials confirmed that oil found on Elmer’s Island and Grand Isle matched the biological fingerprint of the hundreds of millions of gallons of oil that spewed from BP’s Macondo well Continue reading
