Local Hero: Alliance Freedom & Sgt. Russell Logan

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - For more than two decades, Alliance Freedom has worked on behalf of veterans providing scholarships for their children, building them homes, and sending them on much needed vacations.

Literally anything that just might make their lives a little easier.

Last week one local veteran from Millington got a pretty cool surprise from the organization.

For the past three years in Milan, Tennessee, they have had a freedom celebration.

Remembering the soldiers who did not come home

"We like to celebrate our veterans thank them and appreciate everything that they do," organizer Shawn Rochelle said.

And those that did, like air force tech Sgt. Russell Logan, who came home. Just not the same way he left.

"I remember getting up off my back and didn't really know what was going on. I didn't feel nothing but for pressure," Logan said.

While serving in Afghanistan in 2011, Logan stepped on a landmine there. Losing his left leg.

He was forced to retire from the military in 2013.
