Freedom's Burgess named final 2012 county player of the week

Freedom senior running back David Burgess (5-8, 180) is The News Heralds final 2012 high school football county player of the week for his performance in the Patriots 28-7 home win over rival Patton on Friday.

Burgess, who wins the award for a whopping sixth time in 11 weeks this fall, became the second Patriot in history to rush for 2,000 yards in a single season. He finished with 26 carries for 164 yards and his teams final touchdown to pull within 25 yards of Terry Sheffield's school mark of 2,158 in 1997.

Burgess now has 25 total TDs this year along with 3,576 rushing yards for his three-year varsity career, averaging 8.6 yards per carry. Hes also the countys eighth-leading receiver this season, with seven catches for 119 yards and two scores.

Burgess, along with standouts Shawn Fairchild at quarterback and Khris Gardin at wide receiver, have helped Freedom average 408 yards and 37 points this fall.
