Freedom Sweep Wild Things with Extra Inning Victory

May 17, 2014 - Frontier League (FL) Florence Freedom (Florence, KY) - Drama was the name of the game in the Florence Freedom's (3-0) 2014 opening series sweep of the Washington Wild Things (0-3).

Cole Miles scored the winning run Thursday night to begin the series on a walk-off walk. He drove in the winning run Saturday night with a walk-off single in the 10th inning as Florence prevailed 6-5.

The game was a back and forth affair that saw neither team able to hang on to a lead for long.

Washington got on the board first against Florence starter Casey Henn thanks to a C.J. Beatty two-run home run in the top of the third. But the Freedom responded right away in the bottom of the frame. Nick Stein got things rolling with his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left. Bobby Joe Tannehill singled and Niko Gallego executed a bunt single to put two runners on for the Freedom. Miles bunted both runners over and Buddy Sosnoskie grounded out to second base to drive in Tannehill.

The game remained tied at two until the fifth. With one out, Ryan Kresky singled for Washington. He would advance to second on a Henn balk and score on a Stewart Ijames single.

The 3-2 lead for the Wild Things did not last long. With one out in the sixth, Joe Staley went yard for his second home run of the season to tie the game at three. Then with two away, Kyle Bluestein drew a walk. That chased Washington starter Tim Flight from the game. Bluestein stole second and new pitcher Jhonny Montoya surrendered a single to Stein. Bluestein scored and the Freedom had their first lead of the game.

Chris Cummins entered the game for Henn in the seventh. With one out, Kresky reached on a Tannehill error. Beatty singled him to third and Kresky would score later in the inning on a wild pitch from reliever Pete Levitt.

With the game tied at four the Freedom got lead-off doubles in the seventh and eighth but were unable to translate them into runs.

Washington took yet another lead in the top of the 10th as a bloop triple scored a run to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Wild Things.

But Jonathan Kountis struggled with his control in the bottom of the 10th, walking Staley and hitting Sam Eberle. Bluestein laid down a perfect bunt up the first base line to load the bases with nobody out. Kountis then plunked Stein and the game was tied again.
