Freedom Fund Scholarship apps available

Applications are available for the 2013 Freedom Fund Scholarship Program sponsored by the Henry County Branch of the NAACP.

Shana Thomas-Thornton is chairwoman of the Freedom Fund Scholarhsip Program. She said the program is open to all high school seniors in Henry County at both public and private schools.

The scholarship committee does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, sex, religion or nationality, said Thomas-Thornton. The scholarships are based on merit. We ask that they (applicants) be attending a high school in Henry County and that they reside in Henry County.

Applicants must have a 3.0 grade-point average or higher and are required to submit an essay, 500 words or less, about What Freedom Means to Me in 2013. The top five finalists will interview with a panel of judges from the scholarship committee.

Applications are due Feb. 4. Winners will be announced at the 2013 Freedom Fund Banquet March 29.

Thomas-Thornton said last years recipients, Dutchtown High School graduates Armani Madison and Yacine Sow, both attend Brown University. She said they were chosen from a large pool of students from every public school in the county.
