Council freedom may kill campsite

A Picton holiday park run on Marlborough District Council-owned land could shut if the council permanently open up a freedom camping spot in the town, its owner warns.

Alexanders Holiday Park owner Anthony Booker said a council summer trial to open the town's High St car park to freedom campers would "run him out of town".

Alexanders has been a holiday park for 70 years and Booker started leasing the land from council eight years ago.

Council were willing to risk his fees and rates to open up a competing freedom camp, he said.

"Thanks for putting me out of business council," Booker said.

"We lease the land from council, now they are providing free places for people to park.

"Why not buy the park off me and use it as a freedom camping area. It would be easier and the facilities would be there for them.

"I am livid. There is no incentive to be here.

"If council want to destroy camping grounds they are going about it the right way."

Council assets and services manager Rosie Bartlett said to her knowledge it was not raised before that Alexanders could be a possible freedom camping site.
