SpaceX delays dramatic in-flight abort test of Falcon 9 rocket to prove Crew Dragon is safe for astronauts – CBS News

The launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on a dramatic in-flight test of the emergency escape system built into the company's Crew Dragon astronaut ferry ship was delayed 24 hours on Saturday because of high winds and rough seas in the capsule's off-shore recovery zone.

The Falcon 9, featuring a thrice-flown first stage and a fueled but engine-less second stage, is expected to be destroyed during the test while the unpiloted Crew Dragon capsule, equipped with eight powerful Super Draco rocket engines, is boosted to safety before splashing down about 20 miles northeast of Cape Canaveral.

Launch from historic pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center originally was targeted for 8 a.m. ET Saturday, the opening of a four-hour window. But forecasters warned that expected high winds and rough seas off shore could cause problems for the Crew Dragon's recovery.

Mission managers later pushed launch back to the end of the window, and early Saturday, SpaceX tweeted the launch would be delayed 24 hours.

"Standing down from today's in-flight Crew Dragon launch escape test attempt due to sustained winds and rough seas in the recovery area," SpaceX announced. "Now targeting Sunday, January 19, with a six-hour test window opening at 8:00 a.m. EST."

Off-shore weather should be better Sunday, but upper level clouds ahead of a cold front could still cause problems.

"Recovery weather is great," said launch weather officer Mike McAleenan. "Very light winds and very low waves. Unfortunately, that front is moving into the panhandle of Florida, and we're going to see a lot of upper level clouds moving into our areas. You can see that's not good for (recovery visibility), and it's not too good for launch weather."

The in-flight abort test, or IFAT, is the last major milestone before SpaceX launches two veteran NASA astronauts -- Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken -- on a flight to the International Space Station, the first launch of U.S. astronauts from American soil since the space shuttle's final mission in 2011.

If the test goes well, and assuming no other major issues crop up, the long-awaited piloted test flight with Hurley and Behnken, known as Demo-2, could come as early as March.

"The vehicle will be all ready at the end of February," Kathy Lueders, manager of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, told reporters Friday. "We're kind of shooting for early March right now, from a planning perspective. That would be the earliest."

Boeing also is building a commercial crew capsule for NASA the CST-100 Starliner but it's not yet clear when that ship will be ready for a piloted test flight to the space station. Boeing launched a Starliner last month on an unpiloted test flight, but an on-board timing glitch prevented a rendezvous and docking with the space station.

SpaceX flew its own unpiloted Crew Dragon test flight last March, docking with the station and safely returning to Earth. At that point, the in-flight abort test was planned for last spring with the first piloted mission expected in the summer-to-fall timeframe.

But last April, a Crew Dragon exploded during a ground test, an instant before ignition of its Super Draco abort engines, and downstream tests were delayed.

The failure later was blamed on a leaky valve in the propellant pressurization system and the design was modified to prevent any chance of a recurrence. The system was successfully tested last November, clearing the way for the in-flight abort test.

Hurley and Behnken, both spaceflight veterans, flew in from the Johnson Space Center to participate in the countdown rehearsal Friday and both planned to be on hand in the SpaceX launch control center when the Falcon 9 and its unpiloted Crew Dragon blast off.

The importance of a reliable abort system was dramatically demonstrated last October when a Russian booster suffered a catastrophic malfunction two minutes after liftoff. The Soyuz spacecraft carrying a Russian cosmonaut and his NASA co-pilot automatically aborted, landing about 200 miles downrange from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

"We were ripped away from the rocket while it's disintegrating and continuing to burn and pulled away to safety," astronaut Nick Hague told CBS News. "You realize in that moment, 'hey, this could have been really bad.'"

The initial moments of Sunday's flight will follow a normal Falcon 9 space station launch trajectory. But not for long.

As the rocket plows upward through the thick lower atmosphere, the region where aerodynamic stress is most severe, the on-board flight computer was programmed to trigger the abort about 84 seconds after liftoff, just as it would in a piloted flight if sensors detected an impending malfunction.

The Falcon's engines will shut down as the Crew Dragon's eight Super Draco abort engines ignite, pushing the capsule away from the now-powerless booster with an acceleration a race car driver would envy. Within just a few seconds, the spacecraft will reach a relative velocity of some 430 mph, subjecting two heavily instrumented astronaut test dummies to more than four times the normal force of gravity.

With its own engines shut down, the booster is expected to aerodynamically break up, showering debris into the Atlantic Ocean below. SpaceX recovery crews will be standing by just outside the designated safety zone to clean up as much of the debris as possible.

"The Dragon will have left, so the top end of the second stage is now basically a big air scoop," said Benji Reed, SpaceX director of crew mission management. "And so you've got all this air pushing against it, a huge amount of force pushing against it ... so it's going to be a lot more susceptible to the winds as it loses its velocity and start to tumble.

"At some point, we expect that the Falcon will start to break up. And yes, both stages are loaded with fuel because we want to have the right mass and do the test the right way. So with both stages loaded with fuel, there'll probably be some amount of ignition, flame, we'll see something. ... But we do expect it to break up."

The Crew Dragon, meanwhile, was programmed to jettison its no-longer-needed lower trunk section before flipping around, putting its heat shield in the direction of travel, arcing over at an altitude of about 26 miles and plunging back into the lower atmosphere.

If all goes well, two drogue chutes will deploy at an altitude of about three miles, stabilizing the ship and slowing it down before the Crew Dragon's four main parachutes deploy about a minute later at an altitude of just one mile or so. From there, the ship should descend to a relatively gentle splashdown about 20 miles east of Cape Canaveral.

A SpaceX recovery ship will be standing by to haul the craft on board and bring it back to Port Canaveral. Total test duration from launch to splashdown: about 10 minutes.

The abort systems in the Crew Dragon and Boeing's Starliner are both designed to carry the capsules to safety in the event of a catastrophic failure at any point from the launch pad to orbit, resulting in emergency splashdowns. Launches to the space station require trajectories that parallel the East Coast and an abort could result in a splashdown at any point from Cape Canaveral to the North Atlantic Ocean.

For normal SpaceX splashdowns and Boeing landings in the western United States, both companies are responsible for recovering their own spacecraft and getting the crews back to NASA. For emergency rescue scenarios, all of which end with unplanned ocean splashdowns, NASA is relying on the U.S. Air Force.

For all piloted launches of Crew Dragon and Starliner spacecraft, two HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters and an extended-range HC-130 aircraft will be on standby at nearby Patrick Air Force Base, ready to deploy rescue crews, rafts and equipment within 230 miles of the launch site.

For near-shore aborts, the astronauts would be flown back to land by helicopter or taken directly to a trauma center if necessary.

"Other crews will be on standby in Charleston, South Carolina, where a C-17 (jet) will be ready for takeoff," Steve Payne, manager of commercial crew launch integration for NASA, said in an interview. "They can go fly out to wherever we are in the middle of the ocean, drop equipment and rescue jumpers and get the crew stabilized and then wait for a ... vessel of opportunity to come help out."

Once a commercial crew ship reaches orbit, the Air Force will maintain the rescue alert team at Charleston and another a Hickham Air Force Base in Hawaii to provide assistance in the event of problems that might force an unplanned landing.

20 Things That Will Get Anyone In Hot Water With The Cruise Ship Staff – TheTravel

Cruising the high seas is quickly becoming the go-to choice for travelers. Accommodation, meals, and flights bundled into one with the added bonus of not having to cart luggage back and forth to airports or train stations, is the main reason why cruising is becoming a much more efficient and cheaper way of traveling.

From boarding the grand ship to finding your way around the interior, and finally to your room with endless sea views is an exciting time.

In all of this craziness, however, it is important to remember the staff is there to help you, so showing a high level of respect, as you would to anyone else, is of utmost importance, otherwise, it may land you in hot water!

At the beginning of the cruise, by law, staff will perform a muster drill in case of any emergency. Cruise Criticagrees that yes, it isn't the most ideal start to a holiday, but it is a safety measure that must be respected. If you do not attend, you will be sanctioned by the staff.

Most of the time, falling ill is out of our control but it does happen. If staff find out you are sick for any reason, they will either confine you to your room in 'quarantine', or they will tell the captain to pull in to the next port and ask you to leave.

PO Cruises suggests as with pretty much anywhere you go, bringing contraband onboard is highly illegal and can lead to serious consequences if staff find out. Of course, you are there to enjoy yourself, but it's important to abide by the rules, otherwise, you might find yourself dismissed at the next port.

This is a bit of an odd one, but it does happen. Passengers have been found to impersonate crew members, which as you can imagine, does not sit well with them. Cruise Passenger says that if found to be impersonating, a passenger is subject to a hefty fine, confinement to an onboard cell or even arrest.

No, not literally. Throwing food and other items overboard will land you in hot water with crew members. While not technically illegal, CN Travelersaysit's not good for the environment nor is it a good look to be throwing thingsoff the ship, and no one will look twice when you are thrown overboardat the next port.

This is a no-brainer. Any physical or verbal abuse towards a crew member will result in immediate dismissal from the vessel. Listen to the staff as they are there to help you and others stay safe, and if you don't agree with something, be respectful and voice your opinion in a cool, calm manner.

When cruise ships dock into port, guests disembark and explore the city; mostchoose an organized tour with an agent of the ship, but others choose to travel individually. If you are not back by the time the ship is scheduled to leave, you will be left behind.

We all love that elusive selfie and some will simply not stop until they have the best one possible. While there are many places onboard a cruise ship to take a selfie that may go viral, attempting to climb to these places is very risky. If the crew notices, you could face legal action.

There is perhaps no more romantic holiday than a cruise. However, you must remember you're in a room with a paper-thin wall and your neighbor can hear pretty much everything. If crew walk past and hear your goings on, they will knock and ask you to keep it down. Solution? Turn the shower on beforehand!

Refusing to be screened upon entering the ship is a telltale sign that you are hiding something. Even if nothing is found on your person during her screening process, refusing sends alarm bells to all crew and now they must spend the whole cruise keeping a close eye on you, per CN Traveler.

Making any kind of threat is considered grounds to have you and traveling party dismissed from the vessel. Even if you are at the bar and having a very good time, refrain from phoning in a fake threat as now they must deal with the threat procedure and with you.

Unwillingness to present travel documents, just as refusing to be screened, is nothing but alarm bells for staff. According to Cruise Critic, while you may present your documents in due course, it is just unnecessary to keep the staff and fellow passengers waiting any longer than they have to. Be a hero and be prepared.

Cruise companies organize their own tours and it may cost a little extra to go with them, but at least you know the service will be reliable and on-time. Crews do not like passengers who organize their own tours because sometimes they are unreliable and late back to the ship.

Theft onboard, just as it is on-shore, is highly illegal and will lead to you being kicked off the ship, and eventually to an arrest. There are CCTV cameras around every corner so you will be caught and dealt with by the crew until they can hand you over to the police.

Cruise liners are one way for people who are attempting to enter a country illegally. CN Traveler reported that recently, ports have tightened security and border control, but if a crew member finds out that you are attempting this highly illegal activity, border authorities will be notified of your pending arrival.

We all like to ask questions; some more than others, but crew members, whilst being there to assist you in any way they can, have many other guests to help too. Staff says that those who ask nonsense, silly questions are wasting their time. Use your common sense before asking a crew member.

Bang for your buck is arguably on the top of anyone's holiday list, whichis why cruising is quickly rising in popularity. Having everything you need in one place will do the trick but it is those guests who simply expect too much that annoys crew. If you want more, pay more. Simple.

Asking silly questions is one thing, but if you just listen to the staff when you ask questions, you and the crew will be far better off because no one likes to answer the same questions more than once. Again, staff are there for your comfort but don't abuse them and hammer them with questions.

Tipping is almost a religion in the US, in Europe it is optional and in Asia, Japan especially, it is seen as disrespectful. It all comes down to where you are cruising, however, crews do not get paid terribly well and if their service is worthy, give them a few extra dollars!

Being respectful to staff should be common sense. The staff is there to help you and they will do whatever they can to ensure you are comfortable, so treat them as you would any of your friends and who knows, there might be a few extra chocolates in your room after it is made-up!

Dolittle Is One of the Worst Movies in Years – The Atlantic

It would be an exaggeration to say that Dolittle has a plot. The viewing experience more resembles a series of malfunctioning screen savers in which Downey Jr. twitches his head left and right while animals gallivant around him, complaining of various ailments while tossing off hacky one-liners. The only part of this horrifying tableau that changes is the scenery. Sometimes Dolittle is in the whimsically ramshackle mansion where he lives with his various bestial patients and nurses a broken heart over a long-lost love; sometimes hes on a boat sailing the high seas, or in an oceanic pirate nation, or in a mysterious dragon-guarded cave. How he gets to these places is mostly unclear, though some very eager narration by a parrot called Polynesia (played by Emma Thompson) tries to explain away every storytelling inconsistency.

The tale shes tasked with justifying is as follows: Dolittle, a gruff man with a faltering Welsh accent (one of several baffling performance choices by Downey Jr.), is drafted into service by two plucky young children named Tommy (Harry Collett) and Lady Rose (Carmel Laniado). His mission, you see, is to save Queen Victoria (Jessie Buckley), who has fallen into a coma, possibly because shes being poisoned by her aides-de-camp Blair Mdfly (Michael Sheen) and Lord Badgley (Jim Broadbent). The only way to revive Her Majesty is to retrieve a magical fruit from a hidden kingdom. The perilous journey requires the involvement of almost all of Dolittles furry friends, including an ornery polar bear (John Cena), a wisecracking ostrich (Kumail Nanjiani), and a cowardly gorilla (Rami Malek).

The events in the above paragraph may sound like feverish ramblings. In reality, they are the components of a narrative so bowdlerized, only a boardroom of studio executives could have created it. Any emotional through line that was originally intended for this film has long since vanished, although there are vestigial hints of a more sensical character arc involving Dolittles withdrawal from society and his efforts to rebuild both his own mental health and the well-being of his animal patients. At least, thats the only explanation I can think of for a scene in which a gorilla named Chee-Chee covers his face with his hands and yells, I am not a prisoner to fear!

I can understand why such a project caused enough studio panic to prompt reshoots; those pensive moments in Dolittle may never have worked and certainly stick out here. Yet the lighter material is even more bewildering; the movie is essentially one and a half hours of celebrity voice-overs finding different ways to say, Thats gotta hurt! Characters appear and vanish from the action with no explanation; at one point, Dolittle and company are welcomed aboard a new boat by a bearded man who announces Im Jeff! and is never seen or mentioned again. Somehow, the supporting cast of humans emerges largely unscathedAntonio Banderas is a compelling pirate king, Sheen a hilariously preening villain. But that barely matters in a movie where 90 percent of the dialogue consists of bargain-basement sitcom zingers delivered by ducks and squirrels.

Millions of Sharks Around the World May Have Fishing Hooks Stuck Inside Them, Scientists Suggest – Newsweek

Millions of sharks in the world's oceans may have fishing hooks stuck inside them with potentially serious health consequences, research indicates.

A team of scientists observed 55 individual tiger sharks for eight years off the coast of Tahiti in the South Pacific, finding that 38 percent of them had been hooked by fishing gear at least once during this period.

Worryingly, the team found that some of the these hooks stayed in place for years, and could potentially remain for the entire lifetime of the shark, according to a study published in the journal Fisheries Research.

"That can have profound consequences for those animals. It can injure or even perhaps kill them because they're unable to feed properly after these interactions," Carl Meyer, an author of the study from the University of Hawaii, said in a statement.

The team said it was common for sharks to have more than one hook embedded in their bodies at any one time. They even observed one shark with seven deeply-wedged hooks, and another with six.

The researchers say many tiger sharks get hooked by fisheries targeting tuna and swordfish using longlines.

"Longlines are lines that have multiple baited hooksfrom tens up to several thousandthat are set either on the seabed or midwater supported by surface floats," Meyer told Newsweek.

"They are typically left in place for several hours and then hauled in to recover the catch. High-seas longline fisheries primarily target high-value tunas and swordfish but also 'bycatch' other non-target species, including sharks.

"In most cases, the fishers do not want to catch sharksthe sharks are simply attracted to the same bait as target species, or to the hooked target species themselves.

"If hooked, sharks often break or bite the line, or are cut loose by fishers without them removing the hook. After these interactions, sharks may swim away with hooks embedded in their stomachs, throats, mouths or externally around the jawsor elsewhere on the bodyand may also be trailing line from those hooks."

For the latest study, Meyer and his team observed the 55 sharks at an ecotourism site off the northwest coast of Tahiti between 2011 and 2019.

"Gear retentionwhen marine animals escape from fishing gear with parts of the gear stuck on their bodieshas been recognized as a potential problem for some time but certain key questions have been very difficult to answer," Meyer said.

"Chief among these are: (1) How long do sharks retain embedded hooks and trailing line? And (2) What are the impacts of embedded hooks and trailing line on shark health?

"We realized that we could answer both of these questions using the tiger shark photo-identification data set where individual sharks, identified from unique characteristicsfor example, scars and natural markingswere photographed on multiple occasions over multiple years."

In the study, the team identified two main types of hooks: Those made from stainless steel and others made of corrodible material. All of the corrodible hooks fell off before a period of two-and-half years. Meanwhile, the stainless steel hooks could stay wedged in the shark for more than seven years.

"Internal hooks can cause internal bleeding," Meyer said. "External hooks can interfere with feeding. Trailing line can interfere with feeding, wrap around fins leading to necrosis (tissue death), and interfere with swimming."

Despite these potential risks, the researchers said that the tiger sharks in the study were relatively healthy even though they had embedded hooks and trailing line.

But Meyer puts this down to tiger sharks being particularly robust, describing them as the "Sherman tank" of the shark world.

They only observed one shark with an internal hook, opening up the possibility that many animals that suffer this fate end up perishing. "We predominantly observed individuals with externally embedded hooks, so the fate of tiger sharks with internal hooks is still unclear," he said.

"Individuals of other shark species with externally embedded hooks and trailing line have been observed in poor condition and struggling to feed normally, so this is a significant conservation concern especially given the millions of shark interactions with fishing gear that occur each year.

"This is a problem that likely affects millions of individual sharks across the world's oceans. Sharks are hooked in a broad variety of fisheries ranging from coastal recreational angling to commercial open-ocean longlining."

The problem is not limited to sharks. A wide variety of hook and line fisheries around the world also inadvertently hook non-target species including fishes, turtles, marine mammals, and birds.

In light of their findings, the team makes several recommendations to fisheries regarding the use of hooks.

"Fishers do not want to catch non-target species and increasingly understand the importance of reducing the impact of fishing on non-target species," Meyer said.

"Switching to the use of non-stainless hooks is not a panacea but will help to reduce impact by decreasing the time required for sharks and other animals to shed embedded hooks."

20 things everyone gets in hot water with the cruise ship staff – Mash Viral

Cruising on the high seas quickly becomes the best choice for travelers. Accommodation, meals and flights bundled in one with the added bonus that you dont have to drag luggage back and forth to airports or train stations, is the main reason why cruising becomes a much more efficient and cheaper way of traveling.

From boarding the big ship to finding your way through the interior and finally to your room with endless sea views is an exciting time.

In all this craziness, however, it is important to remember that the staff is there to help you, so showing a high level of respect, as you would do to someone else, is of the utmost importance, otherwise you can bring hot water!

Via Hive Miner

At the start of the cruise, according to the law, the staff will carry out a drill drill in an emergency. Cruise Critic agrees that yes, it is not the most ideal start to a vacation, but it is a safety measure that must be respected. If you are not present, you will be penalized by the staff.

Via Asia. Nikkei

Usually being sick falls outside of our control, but it does happen. If employees discover for any reason that you are ill, they will either restrict you to quarantine in your room or tell the captain to move to the next port and ask you to leave.

Via Newsweek

PO Cruises suggests that bringing illegal smuggling on board is almost illegal and can have serious consequences if staff find out. Of course you are there to enjoy yourself, but it is important to follow the rules, otherwise you may be fired in the next port.

Via Journey Ranger

This is a bit strange, but it does happen. It has turned out that passengers present themselves as crew members, which you cannot imagine. Cruise passenger says that if a passenger occurs, a passenger is subject to a high fine, imprisonment in a cell on board or even arrested.

Via ABC News

No, not literally. If you throw food and other items overboard, you land in a crew with warm water. Although it is technically not illegal, CN Traveler says it is not good for the environment, nor does it look good to throw things off the ship, and no one will look twice if you are thrown overboard in the next port.

Via business insider

This is a no-brainer. Any physical or verbal abuse against a crew member leads to immediate discharge from the ship. Listen to the staff when they are there to help you and others stay safe, and if you disagree with something, be respectful and express your opinion in a cool, peaceful way.

Via Reuters

When cruise ships dock at the port, guests alight and explore the city; most opt for an organized tour with a ship agent, but others choose to travel individually. If you are not back by the time the ship has to leave, you will stay behind.

Via Filipino times

We all love that elusive selfie and some just wont stop until they have the best possible. Although there are many places aboard a cruise ship to take a selfie that can go viral, attempting to climb to those places is very risky. If the crew notices this, you can take legal action.

Via TripAdvisor

There is perhaps no more romantic vacation than a cruise. However, you must remember that you are in a room with a paper thin wall and your neighbor can hear almost anything. If the crew passes by and hears your ins and outs, they will knock and ask you to keep it low. Solution? Turn the shower on beforehand!

Via Popsugar Australia

Refusing to be screened when entering the ship is a sign that you are hiding something. Even if nothing is found on your person during her screening process, refusal sends alarm bells to all crews and now they must spend the entire cruise to keep a close eye on you, per CN Traveler.

Via travel and leisure

Any threat is considered to be a reason to have you and the traveling party removed from the ship. Even if you are at the bar and really enjoy yourself, you shouldnt call a fake threat because they now have to handle the threat procedure and with you.

Travel online via South Africa

The unwillingness to present travel documents, just like refusing to be screened, is nothing but alarm bells for staff. According to Cruise Critic, it is simply unnecessary to make the staff and fellow passengers wait longer than necessary. Be a hero and be prepared.

Via ShoreBee

Cruise companies organize their own journeys and it may take a little extra to go, but at least you know the service will be reliable and on time. Crews do not like passengers who organize their own journeys because they are sometimes unreliable and are back to the ship late.

Via How Govt works

Theft on board, just like on shore, is very illegal and will cause you to be kicked off the ship and ultimately to an arrest. There are CCTV cameras around every corner, so you will be caught and treated by the crew until they can hand you over to the police.

Via Arctic today

Cruise ships are a way for people trying to enter a country illegally. CN Traveler reported that ports have recently tightened security and border control, but if a crew member discovers that you are attempting this highly illegal activity, the border authorities will be notified of your upcoming arrival.

Via Charlotte Parent

We are all happy to ask questions; some more than others, but crew members, while they are there to help you in every way possible, also have many other guests to help. Staff say that those who ask nonsense waste their time. Use common sense before you ask a crew member.

Via the Royal Caribbean Blog

Afraid of your money, it is arguably at the top of everyones holiday list, which is why cruising is quickly becoming popular. Everything you need in one place is sufficient, but it is those guests who just expect too much to annoy the crew. If you want more, pay more. Easy.

Via business insider

Asking stupid questions is one thing, but if you only listen to the staff when you ask questions, you and the crew are much better off because no one answers the same questions more than once. Again, the staff is there for your comfort, but do not abuse them and hammer them with questions.

Via Pinterest

Tipping is almost a religion in the US, in Europe it is optional and especially in Asia, Japan, it is considered disrespectful. It all comes down to where you sail, but crews are not paid very well and if their service is worthy, give them a few extra dollars!

Via business insider

Respect for staff must be common sense. The staff is there to help you and they will do everything to make you feel at ease, so treat them like your other friends and who knows, there may be a few extra chocolates in your room after this is made up!

Ocean temperatures hit record high as rate of heating accelerates – The Guardian

The heat in the worlds oceans reached a new record level in 2019, showing irrefutable and accelerating heating of the planet.

The worlds oceans are the clearest measure of the climate emergency because they absorb more than 90% of the heat trapped by the greenhouse gases emitted by fossil fuel burning, forest destruction and other human activities.

The new analysis shows the past five years are the top five warmest years recorded in the ocean and the past 10 years are also the top 10 years on record. The amount of heat being added to the oceans is equivalent to every person on the planet running 100 microwave ovens all day and all night.

Hotter oceans lead to more severe storms and disrupt the water cycle, meaning more floods, droughts and wildfires, as well as an inexorable rise in sea level. Higher temperatures are also harming life in the seas, with the number of marine heatwaves increasing sharply.

The most common measure of global heating is the average surface air temperature, as this is where people live. But natural climate phenomena such as El Nio events mean this can be quite variable from year to year.

The oceans are really what tells you how fast the Earth is warming, said Prof John Abraham at the University of St Thomas, in Minnesota, US, and one of the team behind the new analysis. Using the oceans, we see a continued, uninterrupted and accelerating warming rate of planet Earth. This is dire news.

We found that 2019 was not only the warmest year on record, it displayed the largest single-year increase of the entire decade, a sobering reminder that human-caused heating of our planet continues unabated, said Prof Michael Mann, at Penn State University, US, and another team member.

The analysis, published in the journal Advances In Atmospheric Sciences, uses ocean data from every available source. Most data is from the 3,800 free-drifting Argo floats dispersed across the oceans, but also from torpedo-like bathythermographs dropped from ships in the past.

The results show heat increasing at an accelerating rate as greenhouse gases accumulate in the atmosphere. The rate from 1987 to 2019 is four and a half times faster than that from 1955 to 1986. The vast majority of oceans regions are showing an increase in thermal energy.

This energy drives bigger storms and more extreme weather, said Abraham: When the world and the oceans heat up, it changes the way rain falls and evaporates. Theres a general rule of thumb that drier areas are going to become drier and wetter areas are going to become wetter, and rainfall will happen in bigger downbursts.

Hotter oceans also expand and melt ice, causing sea levels to rise. The past 10 years also show the highest sea level measured in records dating back to 1900. Scientists expect about one metre of sea level rise by the end of the century, enough to displace 150 million people worldwide.

Dan Smale, at the Marine Biological Association in the UK, and not part of the analysis team, said the methods used are state of the art and the data is the best available. For me, the take-home message is that the heat content of the upper layers of the global ocean, particularly to 300 metre depth, is rapidly increasing, and will continue to increase as the oceans suck up more heat from the atmosphere, he said.

The upper layers of the ocean are vital for marine biodiversity, as they support some of the most productive and rich ecosystems on Earth, and warming of this magnitude will dramatically impact on marine life, Smale said.

The new analysis assesses the heat in the top 2,000m of the ocean, as that is where most of the data is collected. It is also where the vast majority of the heat accumulates and where most marine life lives.

The analysis method was developed by researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and uses statistical methods to interpolate heat levels in the few places where there was no data, such as under the Arctic ice cap. An independent analysis of the same data by the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration shows that same increasing heat trend.

Reliable ocean heat measurements stretch back to the middle of the 20th century. But Abraham said: Even before that, we know the oceans were not hotter.

The data we have is irrefutable, but we still have hope because humans can still take action, he said. We just havent taken meaningful action yet.

Twitch streamer goes AFK at the worst possible time in Sea of Thieves – Dexerto

Twitch streamer Quantifiable picked the absolute worst possible time to go AFK while playing Sea of Thieves as her ship came under attack from the Kraken, leaving her crewmate screaming for his life.

When Rare revealed Sea of Thieves back in 2015, the open-world cartoon pirate game was received with much fanfare as players looked to capitalize on the multiplayer title with some entertaining gameplay.

Despite having a few bumps along the way, including a pretty rocky launch, the game has hit a patch of smooth sailing as content updates and stable servers have got players hopping aboard a ship and searching for fortunes on the high seas. However, one thing that may never change is its ability to create absolute hilarious highlights especially when you take your eye off the ball.

During her January 12 stream, Quantifiable, a growing broadcaster, had been playing the multiplayer pirating title when she needed to jump away for a moment leaving her crewmate all alone on their Sloop ship.

However, as quickly as she hopped away, her ship came under attack from the beastly Kraken and a computer-controlled Skeleton ship. Um, we just stopped. Kraken maybe? Quant! Quant, her teammate called out in a panic.

The shouting seemed to work, however, as the streamer quickly replied that she had to go AFK, yet, not even she could believe what had happened. I literally went AFK for a minute and this is what happens, are you f**king kidding me, Quantifiable said, turning to look at the Kraken that had become wrapped around her sloop.

As anyone who has played Sea of Thieves well knows, you can fight off the Kraken, but its a difficult task if youre running with a Sloop that only has two cannons and youre also taking fire from skeletons.

That meant that the streamer was ultimately confined to the Ship of the Damned, needing a respawn to get her back in the game. Maybe next time though, the game will be a little more lenient with its timing and let her return from a mini timeout.

Nul points for Britain in the EU revision bong contest – The Guardian

There will be no chimes at midnight. Anglican vicars have declined the suggestions of Brexiters that they should ring the bells of their churches to hail the beginning of the golden age that, as Boris Johnson has assured us, will be inaugurated by Brexit on 31 January. And Big Ben will not bong. The silence that Westminsters great clock tower has maintained since its clapper was removed while restoration works are in progress will not be broken. Johnson claimed that he was working up a plan so people can bung a bob for a Big Ben bong. The plan turned out to be like all his other Brexit plans, which is to say nonexistent. So at this moment of destiny the prime minister will surely adapt John Donne. Ask not for whom the bell doesnt toll. It doesnt toll for thee.

The problem with a revolt against imaginary oppression is that you end up with imaginary freedom

Never mind that the bongs would, rather deliciously, mark the supremacy of Brussels time: midnight in the EUs capital being the rather less resonant 11pm in London. Never mind that the 500,000 cost of a temporary restoration would work out at 45,000 per bong, surely the most expensive rings since Richard Burton bought jewellery for Elizabeth Taylor.

Still, like some fan fiction version of Charles Laughton in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the true believers cry: The bells! The bells! Tory MP Mark Francois has donated 1,000 to a crowdfunding appeal for cash to pay for temporary works on Big Ben. Business secretary Andrea Leadsoms rather more curbed enthusiasm has yielded a contribution of 10 enough presumably for a millisecond micro-bong.

But the underlying point of the campaign seems to lie not so much in the expectation that the chimes will actually sound to herald the new dawn of British greatness as in the hope that they will not. This will prove again that the elites will stop at nothing to stifle the joy of the risen people of England. (The joy of the people of Scotland being unconfined by virtue of being almost entirely absent.)

Why, even in their moment of triumph, do the Brexiters need this self-pitying narrative? It is another episode in the blame game that has been implicit from the start of the Brexit saga. Brexit is inherently anticlimactic. This is not just because the botched process of negotiating withdrawal has turned the gush of liberation into a dribble, with Independence Days (29 March; 31 October) coming and going like a millenarian preachers predictions for the end of the world. It is not just because the special memorial 50p coins had to be melted down. It is because the act of liberation itself is fundamentally spurious.

Revolutions unleash euphoria because they create tangible images of change and inaugurate, at least in the fevered minds of their supporters, a new epoch. Brexit cant do either of these things. The problem with a revolt against imaginary oppression is that you end up with imaginary freedom. How do you actually show that the yoke of Brussels has been lifted? You cant bring prawn cocktail-flavoured crisps back into the shops, or release stout British fishermen from the humiliation of having to wear hair nets at work on the high seas, or unban donkey rides on beaches, or right any of the other great wrongs that fuelled anti-EU sentiment because all of it was make-believe.

And so is the golden age to come. Almost no one actually believes in the dawning of the post-Brexit Age of Aquarius. The real public mood in this month of liberation was revealed in a survey commissioned by the Conservative thinktank Bright Blue at the beginning of January: The UK public is fairly pessimistic about the next five years. A majority of the UK public expects levels of undesirable trends poverty (72%), crime (71%), inequality (71%) and national debt (72%) to increase or stay the same.

Thus the great moment of departure on 31 January will be like the last lines in Samuel Becketts Waiting for Godot, in which Vladimir asks: Well, shall we go? and Estragon answers: Yes, lets go. The stage direction is: They do not move. Nothing will really move. The entry into a period of transition of unknown duration and the beginning of trade talks likely to be marked by tedium, indecision and a slow climbdown from grandiose promises really doesnt ring any bells.

All but the most swivel-eyed of the Brexiters know this. Johnson himself has executed a (highly effective) pivot, turning Brexit from a fabulous moment of liberation to a duty that must be done, a trial to be endured, a bad period to be put behind us. The logic of his election slogan is that 31 January will mark not a beginning but an end an end to the torment that has been endured since the referendum of June 2016.

It is striking that the justification for setting aside 120m of public money for a festival of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 2022 has changed in parallel with this shift. When Theresa May announced it in 2018, it was meant to showcase what makes our country great today. Now, what she hailed as this moment of national celebration is repurposed as a moment of national consolation. The recently appointed director of the festival, Martin Green, has said it will have a big narrative going on around healing and coming together. You dont have to come together if you have not been torn apart. You dont have a festival of healing unless youre feeling very sick.

But this downbeat narrative cannot fuel spontaneous overflows of popular emotion. The divisions and anxieties created by Brexit will not end on 31 January, but even if they did, it would be a peculiar mode of national rejoicing: a prime minister celebrating the fact that the pain he is primarily responsible for inflicting is going away. However, as we have seen time and again in this saga, it must be somebody elses fault that things have come to this strange pass. It cannot be that the anticlimax was always going to be part of the story. It must be that all the inherent problems are merely the result of a failure of will.

Brexit is a matter of faith when the miracles dont happen, it is because there are too many of what Johnson calls the doubters, the doomsters, the gloomsters. It is not enough that the people who are delighted to be leaving the EU express their happiness at a great victory over their enemies. Since the story is now about coming together, the doubters must play their part in a ritual of forced cheeriness. If they do not, it is their fault that the party is not quite so swell as it was meant to be. The bells wont ring, not because the bell tower is broken, but because the doomsters dont believe in the message of the unheard bongs.

How an advert in the Echo led to a life on the high seas and France’s highest order of merit – Liverpool Echo

George Bleasdale was just 17 when he answered an advert in the Liverpool Echo - a life-changing decision which led to a life of adventure and danger on the high seas.

Despite being told he was too young by his dad, George always knew he wanted to join the Navy as a boy, after years of watching the merchant ships down at Liverpool's Pier Head.

Just two years after enlisting, George lost over half his crew mates after hitting a rogue mine - he was lucky to make it out of it alive.

Now almost 75 years after the war ended, the Huyton grandad's bravery during WW II is still being recognised. .

The 94-year-old told the ECHO: "We were getting called up at 18 and all the lads we were working with were going away. It came in the Liverpool Echo saying they were getting called up at 18, but you could volunteer at 17-and-a-half and pick a service of your choice.

"I said to my dad I want to join the Navy and he said but you're only 17. I said but you were 17 during World War I - and he said it was different in those days."

Along with his cousin Jimmy, George went to Renshaw Street in Liverpool City Centre to enlist and, after a medical assessment, told his dream of joining the Navy would become reality.

George said: "I got a letter saying I'd passed for the Navy. But I wasn't 17-and-a-half then, so they said when I was I'd be called up.

"My cousin, he never went in the Navy, he went in the Army."

In February 1943, after just 10 weeks training, George was deployed to his post in the Light Coastal Forces, serving on a naval Motor Torpedo Boat (MTB), which patrolled the Channel and protected the Navys flotilla from the Germans heavily-armed E-boats.

Just before the war ended George, who was involved in the D Day Landings, found himself operating off the coast of Yugoslavia.

Now aged 19,he said the team called into one island to find people starving and gave them what food they could, later saving up biscuits and chocolate with the intention of returning to help them.

But this led to another life-changing event for George and his shipmates.

He said: "We were having what you call standees in the Navy, you used to have a cup of tea and a biscuit.

"I was in the mess deck at the front and all I saw was a big flash. The next thing water gushed in and we were all turmoiled. It was a rogue mine that had hit us.

"Luckily I was a decent swimmer and I swam around. I thought what am I going to do here, it was all dark. Then I saw bubbles going up. I swam up and next thing I got dragged out by one of my shipmates."

The collision caused the boat to break in half and out of 31 members of the crew, 17 lives were lost and 14 made it out alive.

George was one of eight to escape without any injuries.

He added: "I was very lucky to get out of it alive and I often think of my shipmates. A lot of them got lost.

"This other boat picked me up and gave us blankets and a bit of rum because we were shivering and someone said there's gonna be a bit of gunfire in a minute.

"He said it was nothing to worry about but your bow is still sticking up and it's got to be sunk. They stayed around after to see if there were any survivors, but there were not.

"I didn't know then but years later when I met this chap in Scotland, he was a Scotsman, he came and said I'm the bloke who sank your boat.

"He was told there were some of our lads still in there knocking. But they couldn't break through, so the ship that picked us up decided to sink it, to give them a quick death. It was very unfortunate, I lost a lot of ship mates that day.

"Afterwards I went on to get a draft to a motor launch sweeper and I said to the old chief I've just come off a boat that's been sank by a mine. And he said listen son, if you fell off your bike what would you do, you'd get back on and have a go wouldn't you.

"He said you might save somebody's life."

After his naval career, George, who was born in Aintree , returned to Merseyside and started a family, marrying wife Dolly and having two sons.

George went on to work for Ford in Halewood for 26 years before retiring - 33 years ago.

Now living in Huyton, his contribution to WW II is still being recognised.

After being notified of his eligibility and helped with his application by community support worker David from Blind UK, George, who is partially sighted, was awarded the Legion D'Honneur - France's highest order of merit - for his role in 1944s D-Day landings.

George said: "I got a letter from the British Embassy saying they'd contacted the French Embassy but it would take two or three months.

"It took five months. But then I got a letter saying it had been granted it and they were sending it to me. It was quite a surprise, it's quite a nice medal."

George said his whole family is incredibly proud as are staff and regulars at local pub Huyton Park where a picture of George with all his medals is framed inside.

He said: "People ask me about it and I say we weren't brave, it was just something we had to do, it was a job.

"They make me out a hero, but I wasn't a hero. I was just an ordinary lad who had to do it. Joining the Navy was a big adventure to me. They were the best days."

Bobby Labonte lives up to family name with NASCAR Hall of Fame induction – Speedway Digest

The indications were there from that first green flag he took as a little boy growing up in small town Texas. Bobby Labonte was perhaps simply destined to be a winner, a champion. And on January 31, he will officially become a member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Even from those early laps he turned trying out a quarter-midget on a short track near his familys Corpus Christi home, the elementary-aged Labonte left no doubt about his competitive frame of mind or his talent behind the wheel. There was something special there. Unmistakable.

When he first started out in quarter-midgets he was either going to wreck or win, Labontes older brother Terry recalled with a slight chuckle. He was wide open.

He did good though. We had quarter-midgets and I remember the first time my dad made him go out and follow me and he wouldnt even follow me. I was just going to show him the line, but no, he wanted to pass me.

I knew from the start he was going to be competitive.

Competitive and Hall of Fame-worthy. As it turns out, all those years ago on that South Texas short track, Terry was actually watching and guiding a Hall of Famer in traininghis brother.

Bobby Labonte, now 55, went on to become one of the most successful drivers of his generation, earning two national series championships - the Grand National (now NASCAR Xfinity Series) title in 1991 and answering that with the 2000 Cup Series championship. He was the first driver in NASCARs long and storied history to win both titles.

He also earned the prestigious 2001 IROC championship and was the first driver to win races in all three major NASCAR racing divisions Cup (2002), Xfinity (1992) and the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoor Truck Series (2005) - at a single track (Martinsville, Va.).

In 1994, Bobby won a second Grand National title this time as a team owner with driver David Green.

And now Bobby will formally join Terry, a two-time Cup Series champion, in the sports grand NASCAR Hall of Fame in two weeks. Labontes former Cup Series team owner Joe Gibbs and his former Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Tony Stewart will also be inducted in this Hall of Fame class of high achievement. Joining them are celebrated engine builder and crew chief Waddell Wilson and the late, hugely-popular driver-turned-broadcaster, Buddy Baker.

The Labonte brothers become only the second pair of siblings to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, joining Glen and Leonard Wood.

As with the Wood Brothers, the Labonte brothers have a celebrated history now marked with a rare and coveted Hall of Fame exclamation point.

While Bobby Labonte and his wife Kristin couldnt be more genuinely honored or excited to attend the NASCAR Hall of Fame induction gala in Charlotte next month, he admittedly still gets a kick thinking of how he got the big news.

A year prior Labontes first year of eligibility for the Hall of Fame, the couple got dressed up and attended the selection announcement at the Hall. However, Labontes name was not among the five chosen for the 2019 class.

So last spring, for his second year of eligibility, Labonte changed the vibe and opted not to attend the formal Hall of Fame announcement in downtown Charlotte. Instead he and Kristin went for a bike ride at the time the news was to be revealed. The two are avid riders and say it just felt like a good way to deal with the natural tension of a potential life-changing moment.

Were about halfway into our 20-mile ride and I see on my phone which is connected through a little computer on my bike - the word Congratulations as a text message, Labonte vividly recalled. Then all of a sudden, a phone call comes, then another, so we just had to stop on the road and answer the phone and the texts. And I called my mom and dad.

They told me, he continued with a hearty laugh. Youre not the first to call.

Labonte said the pride, the memories and the overall great sense of accomplishment he was able to share with family and friends that afternoon was palpable. After all, so much of his career was family-centric. When his brother Terry eight years his senior - got a chance in NASCARs big leagues in the 1980s, the entire Labonte family relocated from Texas to North Carolina for support.

And it was there that Bobby Labonte really began to flourish, first working in the pits then as a competitor earning that first opportunity to immerse himself and his dreams in the NASCAR culture.

Both Labonte and his father Bob helped work on the Billy Hagan-owned NASCAR Cup Series team that Terry won his first Cup championship with in 1984. But two years later Terry Labonte left the Hagan team to drive for NASCAR Hall of Famer Junior Johnson - and his younger brother and father were let go from the team.

Instead of that being a major setback for Bobby Labonte, however, it really turned into a career send-off.

He and his father worked together to form and fund their own late model team and Labonte began turning heads as he raced throughout the Carolinas earning a dominating 10 wins en route to the 1987 Caraway (N.C.) Speedway track title, which was a huge highlight of that time. With the prize money he began to earn, Labonte was able to fund occasional starts in the NASCAR Grand National series. And before long, his talent and determination turned humble mid-pack showings into championship caliber headlines.

Labonte soon began capitalizing on the increased opportunity and burgeoning confidence.

He fielded his own team fulltime in the Grand National Series winning the 1991 championship over another future NASCAR Hall of Famer, Jeff Gordon. The following year Labonte lost the series title to Joe Nemechek by a heart-breaking three points.

Labontes hard work and impressive results landed him a full-time job with the Bill Davis Racing Cup Series team in 1993. He earned his first career Cup Series pole (at Richmond, Va.) that fall and finished second to Gordon for the seasons Rookie of the Year honors.

In 1995, Labonte was hired by Joe Gibbs Racing to take over for Dale Jarrett in the famed No. 18 Interstate Batteries car. Labonte won his first Cup Series race that Memorial Day weekend in the series longest event, the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

He finished runner-up to Jarrett in the 1999 Cup championship and then answered with a mega 265-point edge over the late seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt for the 2000 Cup title. Labonte finished eighth or better in the championship six times in a seven-year span between 1997 and 2003.

Labonte won 21 career races at 11 different tracks and 26 pole positions at 16 different tracks. Notably, his last pole position came in his home state at Texas Motor Speedway.

And he did it competing against a list of fellow Hall of Famers from iconic champions like Earnhardt, Jarrett, Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin and Bill Elliott to Gibbs teammate Tony Stewart and those undoubtedly future selections such as Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch.

The competition was tough, Labonte said. It really was in that era.

Of course, highest among that great list of legends that Labonte sparred with on-track will always be his brother Terry. They finished first and second in multiple races.

One of the most noteworthy races for them, however, was 1996 in the Atlanta Motor Speedway Cup season finale when Bobby won the race and Terry, who finished fifth, clinched his second Cup title. They celebrated with a victory lap around the track together.

You cant write it any better than that, Terry Labonte said. That was a pretty special day.

Usually the last race of the year is the only time two people get to go to victory lane and to be able to do that with my brother was pretty special.

In many ways it was the only fitting way to celebrate a family that left such a bold mark on the sport. Some would find it intimidating to have an older sibling excel in the career you shared. But Bobby Labonte was inspired by it and learned from it. And he went on to earn his own stripes and celebratory hardware.

In two weeks, the sport and entire industry will honor Labontes impressive Hall of Fame-worthy accomplishments. And no one will be prouder than his family, who guided, cheered and took great pride in a career well spent and now again, duly celebrated.

I think about how I watched my brother race since I was a kid, Labonte said. We always raced in different divisions growing up so I was always watching his racing, following him. Whatever he did, I was the little brother, I guarantee I was the nuisance brother. But I was always wanting to be like my brother.

So for all this to have taken place with the NASCAR Hall of Fame, in my head, Im thinking I got to be like my brother. That is cool and I never would have thought that would happen and it did.

Its so awesome for our parents. We were all like the steady boat over the high seas. Never drifted.

And now essentially, their family port is the NASCAR Hall of Fame - alongside the best of the best.

Dolittle is muddled CGI chaos with a grotesque irony at its core – The Globe and Mail

Robert Downey Jr. stars in director Stephen Gaghan's Dolittle.

Universal Pictures

The English author Hugh Lofting planted the seeds of his Dr. Dolittle books while fighting in the trenches of the First World War. To distract himself from the horror of war, he wrote to his children with stories of a kindly physician who communicated with animals. Its fitting, then, that Dolittle, a new film based on Loftings most enduring creation, is a kind of smokescreen for its own ostensible subject the primal, enduring bond between animal and human. Pay no mind to the rapid destruction of the planet and the roughly one billion animals that have perished in Australias wildfires. Heres a CGI ostrich that wears stockings.

Whats new in theatres this weekend, including the unforgettable Clemency, unnecessary Bad Boys for Life and unintelligible Dolittle

Director Stephen Gaghan, who co-wrote the script with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, returns the character to something approaching the books original setting of Victorian England. In a ramshackle cottage in the woods, Dr. Dolittle (Robert Downey Jr.) lives in cheerful squalor with a gaggle of wild creatures, including a nervous gorilla voiced by Rami Malek, a perpetually chilly polar bear (John Cena) and a sage parrot named Poly (Emma Thompson) who narrates the action a necessity given the time-and-space-defying logic of the films plot. Tom Holland voices Jip, a dog whose primary trait is that he wears glasses.

Dolittle has been a recluse since his wife, Lily, a fellow adventurer, died in a shipwreck. In Downeys first post-Marvel project after his role as Iron Man defibrillated his career in 2008, he essentially plays a bemused, brow-cocked version of himself a mushy hybrid of Tony Stark and Captain Jack Sparrow, with an unintelligible accent (Welsh? Scottish?) to add to the confusion. He seems weary of his role even as he stumbles through it and is so often the only living being in his scenes that I found myself taking pleasure in picturing the actor hooting like an ape alone in a room, without the chorus of digitally rendered animals that rounds out the finished product.

Story continues below advertisement

Yoshi the polar bear and Chee-Chee the gorilla accompany Harry Collett's Tommy Stubbins on a journey to save Queen Victoria.

Universal Pictures

Like Beauty and the Beasts title brute, Dolittle finds his festering solitude interrupted by the appearance of a stranger a sensitive boy named Tommy Stubbins (Harry Collett) who arrives with an injured yet feisty squirrel (Craig Robinson). Channelling Mrs. Potts, Poly urges the doctor, You cant ignore people just because theyre people. Tell that to the industry that spawned both this film and Tom Hoopers Cats movies in which your eye is more likely to fall on digital fur technology than anything resembling a human being.

A royal emissary (Carmel Laniado) soon shows up to kick the plot into gear. The doctors presence is requested at Buckingham Palace, where Queen Victoria (a largely comatose Jessie Buckley) is deathly ill. The Queen, it turns out, has been poisoned, which prompts Dolittle, Tommy and a Noahs ark of animals to set out on a journey by sea to find the antidote. On the way, they encounter Lilys father, a pirate king played by the stalwart Antonio Banderas, and the evil Dr. Mudfly (a wonderfully committed Michael Sheen), a black-clad, goateed gadfly with selfish motivations to stop Dolittle and his band of zoological misfits.

The adventure unfolds in a near-literal blur of computer-generated action. Dolittle is about as far as you can get from the storys previous iteration, the late-1990s Dr. Dolittle franchise starring Eddie Murphy. Those films augmented live animals with special effects and jettisoned the source materials historical backdrop for a contemporary American setting. This approach offered a kind of clarity in its depiction of the bond between human and animal. In contrast, Dolittle is so maniacally torn between its central conceit and its tale of peril on the high seas that the animals are reduced to wisecracking helpmeets for the swashbuckling doc. Theres something outrageous, at this particular moment in time, about a fantasy wherein animals eagerly and unquestionably assemble to help save the lives of people.

Equally grotesque is the depiction of animals as essentially human in spirit. When Chee-Chee the gorilla first opens the manors gates to find Tommy, he doesnt bellow like an ape but screams like a man. I found myself recoiling at the sound of that shriek and at the films callous projection of human emotions, fears and facial expressions onto species whose habitats weve been steadily destroying since Lofting first put pen to paper. Sure, this is a movie for kids, but children can and should understand the absurdity of a polar bear whos always too cold.

Its a deeply upsetting irony that as animation technology becomes more photo-realistic, the creatures it conjures become more imperilled. Maybe its appropriate, in a profoundly depressing way, to present children with this artificial fantasy of nature and its inhabitants; its increasingly the only version theyre likely to see. If the muddled plot and aesthetic chaos of Dolittle leaves a bitter taste in your mouth, seek the antidote an episode of Planet Earth.

Opens Jan. 17.

High Seas Season 3: Netflix Release Date, Cast And Other Details – The Digital Wise

High Seas, the period drama, is another title from the list of fan-favorite Spanish originals on Netflix. Other uniformly enticing names on this slate include Cable Girls, Money Heist, and Elite, among others.

The events of High Seas, as the name hints, take place aboard a luxury cruise ship, touring from Spain to Brazil throughout the 1940s. Two sisters are also part of this trip, but things take a wicked turn when a certain death opens up a pandora box of dangerous, dirty secrets.

This foreign-language thriller brings in a different combo of vintage glamour and mystery elements and hence, it did not appear as a surprise when the series renewed for a second season within a brief time. Now the mystery is, will there be a High Seas season 3? Heres what we know about it.

High Seas stars an ensemble cast, showcasing some famous names from the world of Spanish entertainment. We meet Jose Sacristan, who performs the role of the captain of Barbara de Braganza, the vessel, which is the center-stage of all the ensuing drama. Ivana Baquero casts as Eva Villanueva.

Jon Kortajarena performs Nicolas Vasquez, the chief investigating officer, who takes up the burden of determining the murderer on-board. His character in High Seas, Nicolas, is also the love interest of Eva.

Joining the lead cast is Alejandra Onieva as Carolina Villanueva (Evas older sister and fiancee to Fernando), Eloy Azorn as Fernando Fbregas (the ships owner), Manuela Vells as Louisa aka Sofa Plazaola, and Chiquinquir Delgado as Teresa.

The second season of High Seas ended with the cruise coming in Rio De Janeiro. Also, some of the mysteries are left open-ended with the second season itself. Therefore, the forthcoming season will probably concentrate on those. Also, the cruise dropped its anchor in Rio. It is not apparent while the next season will continue on the cruise journey or will fall to the center. The show has also brought on quite a paranormal way in the second season too. Therefore, its going to be exciting to see where the story sails to in the third season of the High Seas.

High Seas season 2 released on Netflix in all its entirety on November 22, 2019. The second season includes eight episodes, just like its predecessor.

The series, before its original launch, had earlier planned for two seasons. And hence, it did not appear as a surprise when the second installment landed within a pause of just six months.

Now, as far as a third season goes, Netflix has not appeared with an announcement yet. The audience reviews are more or less favorable, no doubt. But a new season will depend on whether the creators needed to make it a multi-season story in the first place.

As of now, if Netflix remains to follow its regular airing schedule and chooses to resume the series, we can expect High Seas season 3 to premiere sometime toward theend of2020.
