Teddy bears, food packaging and family photos: The huge illegal … – shropshirestar.com

It is fly-tipping in Shropshire on a scale that is hardly believable.

This is land owned by Network Rail in Telford, a disused railway line that has become an unofficial dumping ground.

Teddy bears, food packaging and even family photos cover the pathways off the A4169, near Horsehay.

The rubbish continues as far as the eye can see, a mountain that would have taken dozens of lorry loads to fill.

Today police and the Environmental Agency said it is investigating to find out where the mountain of trash has come from so that they can find those responsible. That means searching through the rubbish for clues, including addresses on discarded bills.

The track is near to a signal box run by Telfords Steam Railway, although the line itself is maintained by National Rail.

Simon Masters, a spokesman for the company, said flytipping causes a great amount of misery.

Network Rail is supporting the various authorities investigating these incidents of fly-tipping to establish the circumstances surrounding them and who is responsible, he said.

The investigation is currently ongoing so it would not be appropriate to comment further on these incidents.

However, fly-tipping may appear to be a victim-less crime, but it isnt. It causes a great amount of misery to those who live nearby as well as costing the taxpayer tens of thousands of pounds in clean-up costs.

Paul Hughes, chairman of the Telford Steam Railway, said it was during a routine inspection that he and his colleagues came across the mess.

Theres not a lot of flytipping in the area, but someones obviously just seen it as a quiet opportunity and have gone for it.

It has to be a commercial activity. This isnt someone dumping a bit of rubbish or just clearing their garage out theres tons and tons of it.

When we found it, I had a quick look through and it must have been dropped by a proper refuse vehicle. It was the middle of winter and it stunk there was literally steam coming off it.

Shropshire has some beautiful country lanes. With sofa beds dumped in them. Or other dumped items which somebody, somewhere, cant be bothered to dispose of properly.

You can see some of the latest examples of this rural blight in pictures we carry today.

A disused railway line at Horsehay in Telford is taking on the appearance of a council rubbish tip. What would otherwise be a pleasant area of paths among trees is being destroyed by a mountain of trash. The land is owned by Network Rail, which is the immediate victim of this anti-social behaviour.

Paul Hughes, chairman of the Telford Steam Railway attraction not far away, who came across the mess during a routine inspection with his colleagues, says the dumping is on such a scale that it has to be a commercial activity, and he thinks it must have been dropped by a proper refuse vehicle.

If he is right, it elevates this dumping up the scale of seriousness. It is not a lazy slob or two, which would be bad enough, but potentially corporate crime on an industrial scale.

There is a double cost. The first is that it ruins the countryside. The second is the cost of clearing it all up, which ultimately falls back on the public.

So what is to be done? Making an appeal to the better nature of the culprits will probably not work. If they do not care what anybody thinks about what they do, they are not going to care about appeals to them to stop what they are doing.

What they do care about is exposure to public contempt and being hit in the pocket hard, as presumably a lot of the motivation in dumping the stuff in the first place was it was a cheaper and easier option.

The anger and condemnation directed towards those responsible has to be backed up by a serious attempt to detect them and bring them to book. As what they are doing takes place in areas which are quiet, and so there are not likely to be witnesses, the difficulty in catching the dumpers is apparent.

But surely there must be some people who have their suspicions, and the dumped material is itself evidence which may give the culprits away in some cases.

It is a chronic problem but a few cases of bringing people to court in high-profile prosecutions might make some offenders think that responsible disposal is the best option after all.

Paul said that it was disgusting that the cost of the clean-up would now have to be picked up by Network Rail. If the Telford Steam Railway had acquired the track as they plan to, it could have easily been them footing the bill.

This is a completely different scale to anything you usually see, he said.

Network Rail will end up footing the bill for that, but it could have been us. Were trying to negotiate taking over that line, and it could have been us at the charity having to pay to tidy it up. This isnt a victimless crime.

It would have been a significant amount of the charitys funds to clear it through as well.

While the flytipping wont cause any problems for the Steam Railways plans to expand the line down to Doseley, the volunteers have been told to stay away from the area for the time being.

Instead their focus will remain on next years Polar Express event, a follow-up to the hugely successful Christmas show they held for the first time in 2016.

Paul said: Were very deep into planning for this years Polar Express. Tickets will go on sale very shortly.

There have been a number of large incidents of flytipping over the last few months, including an eight-tonne pile of rubble on Back Lane, near Newport.

In the early hours of the morning, a car crashed into the industrial mess, but was luckily unhurt.

Earlier this year, figures revealed that Shropshires two main councils had not issued any fines for fly-tipping since they were given new powers for on the spot penalties.

Shropshire Council and Telford & Wrekin Council represent more than half the English local authorities who responded to a Freedom of Information request that had not used the powers which allow them to issue fixed penalty notices for smaller cases of fly-tipping.

Shropshire Council said many individuals have received written warnings for various environmental crimes when witnessed by council officers and that fixed penalty notices would only be issued after further investigation.

Telford & Wrekin Council said it had issued scores of fines for littering and dog fouling over the past year and would look to make use of the new legislation for fly-tipping over the coming months.

Cop Block Founder Ademo Freeman Arrested in Ohio for Drug Trafficking/Possession VIDEO – Free Keene

Cop Block founder and Free Keene blogger Ademo Freeman has been arrested while driving in Lebanon, Ohio by Ohio State Police. Despite Ademo not consenting to a search, trooper Jeffrey Martin claimed that because he allegedly smelled the odor of cannabis, that he had probable cause to search.

Ademo was placed into a cruiser, then the trooper(s) broke open a lock on a suitcase. They asked him how much marijuana he had, so presumably thats what they found inside at this point we cant know for sure. Ademo was placed under arrest and taken to the Warren County Jail, all while asking trooper Martin his thoughts about victimless crimes. All of this is heard on a 40+ minute video recorded and live streamed on Ademos cell phone to his facebook page.

Ive taken the time to edit the video down to less than 15 minutes as well as boost the audio levels. I included portions that I couldnt make out what was being said, in case you can. Heres the edited video, which does not have long periods of silence and noise of cars passing:

According to Ademos jail record, hes expected to be arraigned at Warren Municipal Court in front of judge Robert S. Fischer on Tuesday, February 14th. Hes facing three charges including trafficking in drugs, a third degree felony, and two counts of possession of drugs, one a third degree and the other a fifth degree felony. Ohio actually has their criminal court case records online and you can see Ademos case record here. (The jail record says the other count of possession is class three, but the court record says class five.) Hes also been charged with a burnt-out tail light.

Ohio state statutes say that third degree possession or trafficking of marijuana is between 1,000 and 20,000 grams. Fifth degree possession is between 200 and 1,000 grams. Both are felony level charges, and he could be facing as many as eleven years in prison. There is a fundraiser to assist with legal fees that you can help with here.

Owners of Seven California Collision Repair Shops Allegedly Scammed Insurers Out of $560000 – BodyShop Business

California authorities are attempting to break up a family-run organized crime ring involving the owners of seven body shops that allegedly bilked insurance companies out of more than $500,000.

Detectives from the California Department of Insurance detectives and investigators with the Auto Insurance Fraud Task Force arrested seven suspects, charged an additional 22 who are self-surrendering, and still are seeking 11 more suspects for allegedly running an organized automotive insurance fraud ring

The state filed more than 230 felony charges against 40 suspects in connection with crimes committed in seven auto body shops across Coach Valley, a region in between Los Angeles and San Diego. The body shops staged up to 40 false insurance claims receiving payouts totaling $560,492 from 10 different insurance companies, including some of the largest auto insurers in the nation, according to authorities.

This was an elaborate conspiracy to rip off insurers to the tune of nearly a half a million dollars, said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime. The cost of fraud is shouldered by consumers who pay higher premiums when insurers pass along their losses.

The seven body shops are:

Investigators from the Department of Insurance initially received information about the crime ring in 2014, as part of a previous bust of suspects allegedly running a similar crime ring. Investigators with the departments Urban Auto Insurance Fraud Task Force allege that the owners of the seven body shops conspired with employees and family who posed as insurance consumers and filed fraudulent claims for collisions that were either staged or never occurred at all.

Two examples of fraudulent claims filed by the conspirators included one claiming substantial bodily injury in which the insurer paid over $100,000. In another, the suspects allegedly staged a collision that targeted an innocent motorist leaving her vehicle with significant damage.

Go Ahead, Women’s Marchers, Strike. Nobody Will Miss You – The Federalist

The people who headed up the Womens March on Washington a few weeks ago (hereinafter Marchers) now have a strike in the works. They should think carefully before starting.

A strike is not the same thing as a protest. A strike matters because it interferes with material production. When theres a strike at the North Pole, the elves stop making toys. If Santa Claus has no toys, kids stop leaving him cookies. This forces Santa Claus to negotiate with the elves so they will go back to producing.

If the elves strike succeeds, it is for two reasons. First, the elves cooperate with each other. If just a few quit working, they only make more work for the working elves, then get fired by Santa Claus. Second, the elves make something that people want before the strike. People miss their product when it disappears. If the elves only made knockoff Barbies with pre-snarled hair before the strike, or if not enough elves quit working to make a real dent in production, their strike wont work.

The first problem is uniting the workers for the strike. Things at the shop are so bad that the great majority of workers have agreed to take the risk of refusing to work. They can only help themselves by helping each other, sharing the risk and making the line together.Crossing picket lines betrays a fellow schlep, and the evidence is that theres a picket line to cross.

Feminists would like to make scabs out of women who disagree with them or have more pressing duties than activism, but what if there are more scabs than strikers? So if there were 6 million Marchers on January 21, that leaves more than 310 million Americans who didnt show up in DC or at their nearest local march.

Lets say ten people wanted to march for every one who did, which makes 60 million Wish I Could Marchers. We still havent collected enough people to bargain. We dont have enough strikers building a picket line the remaining workers would hesitate to cross (and in real life, picket lines are made of people, not wishes). In these right-to-work days, we couldnt even makeshift an effective union. Enough workers are enough satisfied to keep the shop open.

What kind of shop are we talking about here, anyway? Thats the Marchers second problem. Committed contrarian Janet Bloomfield analyzed the male and female U.S. workforces a few years ago and reached this conclusion: If women took the day off, with the sole exception of NURSES, nothing would happen. No one would die. The world would continue to function. The hair salons and primary schools and retail clothing stores would close, and the male management structure would have to find some way to answer their own phones for a day, but essentially, nothing would happen.

Bloomfield details what the world would look like if Atlas shrugged, using numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Its worth the read. Men overwhelmingly work in the places that keep the sine qua nons of contemporary life operational. They have the jobs that generate and deliver our electricity and gas; they build and maintain the robots in our kitchens and garages; they take out almost all of the trash; they run die Herz Maschine und die Moloch Maschine; and this list could go on for a long time.

But if Atlas concubine doesnt show up for her job (which she has a hard time describing but involves a lot of social media platforms and the word facilitator), and Atlas sister boldly cancels her classes (while leaning on her advisees to don stupid hats), and Atlas mom doesnt put his birthday card in the mail, Atlas isnt going to care.

The March itself was an informative trial run for the proposed strike. Every person who marched that day was not at her/his/zeir job (paid or unpaid), but the gears of civilization failed to grind to a halt. Planes took off and landed, appendixes were removed, sewage left our houses and never came back. The only people who missed the Marchers were those with whom they share domiciles.

To be fair, the March was on a Saturday. Lots of people have Saturday off. But there was also a womens strike the day before (you got it: Friday). That day, 7,408 women refused to work. The number of oppressors they brought to the negotiating table has not yet been reported.

A stronger womens strike effort was hostessed by Betty Friedan on August 26, 1970 (that was a Wednesday). Twenty thousand strikers showed up in New York, while other strikes were held around the country. Do you remember the stock market catastrophe that day? Do you remember the gridlock on every interstate, and how there were no cornflakes for weeks? No, because they didnt happen.

The most significant economic impact of these events was probably the amount of travel and hype they generated. The absence of all those Marchers or strikers from their normal tasks on each of those three days failed to depress the systemically sexist GDP. Them being offsite from their normal work did not shut down the shop. Donald Trump filled his sleigh with racist toys and put them in stockings all over Michigan and Pennsylvania.

That means the events didnt work as strikes. One day of absence from work brought no significant material loss to anyone higher up.

The workforce has enough women in it that if they all agreed not to show up, there would be a noticeable public impact. The difficulty from a strikers perspective is that most of the work women do would still get done.

The day women dont show up for work would be the day women take care of their own kids, make their own lunches, and wash their own dishes. If they kept not coming to work, a lot of unemployed men would get jobs, a lot of made-up jobs would get un-made-up, and a lot of women would move back in with their parents. The economy would technically shrink, but the greater impact would be its reconfiguring. An extended exodus of women from the formal workforce would primarily amount to an undoing of the tangled job-trading women do with each other.

The day men dont show up for work, however, will be a trial run for Armageddon. It will be cold and dark; there wont be phones, TV, or Internet; and people will yell at you if you open the fridge. If men kept not coming to work, the only people happy would be preppers.

So, Marchers, consider. If you call a strike, make it a real one. It needs to halt production. It needs to cripple the economy. It needs to empty the bellies of the overlords and make them beg for the sweet music of your demands.

Traditionally, strikes last longer than one day. In the absence of a union, strikers dont get paid, so you should factor that in. Skilled nurses will be key, but I dont have any great leads after that. I am genuinely curious to see if you can get it done.

Trump Takes a Running Whack at the Liberal Interventionists – The Nation.

Fox News host, Bill O'Reilly interviews President Trump before Super Bowl LI, Sunday, February 5, 2017. (Fox News)

Do not say Donald Trump the candidate hid his foreign-policy plans under a bushel, or that President-elect Trump did not hang in when faced with instant and severe resistance from the high priests and priestesses of the Washington orthodoxy. Trump said all along he intended to take a running whack at our liberal interventionists, who have reigned without serious challenge the whole of the postCold War era. Now President Trump is going about his business.

So are the liberal interventionists, but we will get to that later on.

If Trumps policies abroad as we have them so far were stars in the sky, Greek shepherds would have no name for them. They do not make a coherent constellation. There are problems, naturally: Trump is not a progressive renovator of American foreign policy. But let us be clear on one point straightaway. The prevalent notion that Washington had it right on the foreign side before Donald Trump came along is beyond foolishthe indulgence of policy people who cannot think, media people too anxious about their jobs to think, and others who let these two sorts think for them. Once that is clear, so is this: There is continuity, inheritance, in Trumps policy mix, and in such cases he hurtles down the same wrong road Barack Obama took. When Trump departs from Obama and his predecessors, he is more likely to go in the right direction, although he does not as often as he does.

A few commentatorsthose refusing to surrender to the created reality within which this nation is trappedanticipated what we now witness in Washington. We cannot yet make out where Trump the grand strategistahem!will take foreign policy. Consistency is not this mans strong suit, and many questions are raised. But things come gradually into focus, nonetheless.

Hostility toward Russia is the linchpin of liberal interventionismfont of fear, paranoia, and security obsessions.

Trumps foreign-policy people are all in place and getting on airplanes. State and defense scrap over Asia policy, per usual. (And the latter will probably prevail, per usual.) Michael Flynn, the retired general serving as national security adviser, seems to hold the Iran file, and I will return to that. But here is the big latke: The Russia portfolio sits on Trumps desk. Relations with Moscow shape up as something like his premier foreign policy. If this is so, it is a good call. To be noted: Ever-mounting hostility toward Russia is the very linchpin of liberal interventionist thinkingfont of fear, paranoia, security obsessions, blame games, and all else with which we insist on crippling ourselves. In this they are more or less one with standard neoconservatives or traditional conservatives such as John McCainodd but no surprise. A brave prediction: Trump has a fight on his hands that will last as long as he stands his ground.

In my read, Trumps January 28 telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin was the biggest development in the foreign-policy sphere since he took office. Two reasons:

There have been signs since that Trump does not intend to flinch. In one of those klutzy moves Ukraine-watchers have come to expect, hostilities broke out in the eastern region within hours of the Trump-Putin exchange, and if you take this as coincidence, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to show you. There is little questionbeyond our shores, that isthat this was Kievs provocation, the gambit being to foil Trumps dmarche. Trump did not fall for it. When he spoke by telephone to Petro Poroshenko a week later, Ukraines so-called president, lets call him just for fun, got no joy. We will work with Ukraine, Russia, and all other parties involved to help restore peace along the border, Trump advised. Just right, Mr. President.

Trump is likely to oppose foreign adventures, which puts him up against the imperial edifice and all its janitors.

Now to Nikki Haleys address to the UN Security Council, also subsequent to Trumps conversation with Putin. You may have read that Trumps UN ambassador hit Russia hard on UkraineCNNs headline. Or maybe The New York Timess report to the effect that Russia sanctions are firm. See? Haley is loyally hostile. A breach in a discombobulated administration must be in the offing.

This is what I mean by created reality. While repeating the official position as it now stands, Haley said she regretted the incessant hostility of Samantha Power, her impossibly righteous predecessor; supported Trumps dtente line; and urged a settlement in Ukraine according to the 2015 cease-fire accord known as Minsk II. She was perfectly legible on these points. Here is an astute commentary by Alexander Mercouris, an analyst of Greek background who writes often for publications that do not enjoy the imprimatur of the orthodox. If you decline to read such publications, fine: Remain in Washingtons fog on Ukraine if you like.

The fallout since the TrumpPutin exchange and what followed has been considerable, as anyone could have predicted. And from all that has been said, we can infer a couple of other things about Trump.

One, he is not an exceptionalist. This is big, well beyond a conceptual abstraction. In substance, he is likely to oppose imperial adventuresa logical corollary of his America First theme. This, too, puts him up against the imperial edifice and all its janitors: the generals, the defense executives, NATO brass, the think-tank set, the press. OK, he has just said in so many words: Lets see about all these interventions.

Two, as of the morning press programs last Sunday, Trump and Vice President Pence have begun tearing the lid off one of the mythologies that wall in most of the American citizenry. Trump belched in chapel when Bill OReilly said on Fox News, But Putins a killer, and the president replied, What, you think our countrys so innocent? Scurrying to avoid this very fine questionI have not yet seen a single replythe press contorted this matter into one of equivalence and Americas moral superiority, with Trump and Pence accused of denying the latter.

It is excellent that a president at last puts the question of American innocence very publicly before us.

Who would have expected this?

Some retired general asserted on television afterward that Trumps remark was the worst thing a president has ever said. Wow. Serious contenders are overlooked, but that is another conversation. One could not disagree with the general more diametrically. It is excellent, excellent, that a president at last puts the question of American innocencethe answer to which must be self-evidentvery publicly before us. We as a nation have flinched from this for decades and so landed ourselves in all kinds of disgrace before others. As to moral superiority, this is for the record: Americans have no claim whatsoever. Who can take the ensuing outrage seriously? Are we all aging residents in a rest home?

One more matter in this line: Putins a killer. I do beg pardon. Apart from the sheer nonsense of OReillys assertionHitler! seems to have lost its appealAmericans ought to stay away from this one. How many millions must weyes, we, all of usaccept responsibility for in this century alone (as compared with how many imperial wars Russia has waged at what human cost)? Bringing it down to the ad hominem, as the press loves to do, how many ticks did our just-departed president make on the assassination lists placed on his desk every Tuesday morning?

The stakes are higher now than ever. Get The Nation in your inbox.

Here I have to single out John Dickerson, who, when he is not toasting marshmallows with the rest of his Scout troop, hosts Face the Nation. His grilling of Pence last Sunday was without parallel as measured by shame and shock value. After Pence protested, There was no moral equivalency in what the president saida self-evident pointDickerson sent my mind back to old footage of the McCarthy hearings: Do you think America is morally superior to Russia? But America is morally superior to Russia, yes or no? Shouldnt we be able to just say yes to that question, though? That America is morally superior to Russia?

What is this? Not journalism, that is for sure. Read the transcript. Everyone has changed places. This is where American liberalism comes out. Behind the insistence on moral superiorityanyone know what that is?lies the liberal interventionists righteous agenda abroad: regime change, assassinations, Special Forces deployments, covert operations, and so onall in the name of doing the good we are on earth to do.

Think about these two things: Since 2001 there has been no substantial break in the premises, direction, or objectives of American foreign policy. In the same period, the American press has eagerly assisted in creating the phantom realities necessary to sustain this policy. Shame and banishment for anyone who speaks of reality without quotation marks.

Elsewhere in the news, as they say, there are many other things to think about. For now I will mention two, and briefly.

Trump said he would deep-six the Iran nuclear accord, and he is going to try. The proposal is to renegotiate, as with the North American Free Trade Agreement. Compounding the case, Treasury announced new sanctions a matter of days after Iran conducted another ballistic-missile test late last month. As of today, Michael Flynn announced, we are officially putting Iran on notice. It has no meaning, as many have remarked, except to notify all that Washingtons longstanding hostility has not gone anywhere.

Not good, but nothing new: This is mere continuity. The Obama administration set about sabotaging its celebrated accord with Tehran as soon as it was concluded. Obamas people drafted the sanctions just announced. In my read, this question will resolve itselfbarring a calamity, of course. Obama and John Kerry, his secretary of state, broke their picks claiming the missile tests violated the nuclear pact and thensecond tryan earlier UN resolution. They do not. As to a renegotiation, Iran is on record rejecting the thought, and five other nations are signatories. Theres not a chance in hell they will go back to the table, either. Sooner or later Washington will have to accept, as most others do, Irans right to defend itself against a nuclear-armed neighbor governed by, arguably, the most dangerous man in the Middle East.

Across the Pacific, Defense Secretary James Mattis just toured Japan and South Korea and vigorously reassured both of Washingtons continued commitment to the security role it assumed more than 70 years ago. In Seoul, where a proposed missile-defense system is a highly contentious political issue, Mattis was pointed as he urged it upon a nation nervously eager to avoid escalation. Predictable: This is what the Pentagon does, and the Pentagon has run policy in Asia for all of those 70-odd years.

Look a little more closely. Mattis, who famously knows war firsthand, favors diplomacy over it. In this he is a vast improvement over his quietly paranoid predecessor, Ashton Carter, who never missed a chance to sabotage John Kerrys diplomatic efforts across either ocean. Without saying so, Mattis also countered the reckless threats to China dispensed by Rex Tillerson during his confirmation hearings as Trumps designated secretary of state. For once and for now and maybe not for long, we are marginally better off with the Pentagon running policy across the Pacific.

Mixed picture so far: Some good things in Trumps foreign-policy chest, some middling things, some bad. Here is what I want to know: Why does one look to a figure such as Donald Trump as the best chance out there for a new direction? Who is responsible for this? Somebody failed to report for duty. Who?

Liberal Tolerance: Sen. Tim Scott Reads His Hate Mail On Senate Floor For Supporting Sessions As AG – Townhall

Attorney General Jeff Sessions nomination process was not smooth. It was fraught with political games and gimmicks that delayed his committee vote and his final confirmation vote. Alas, on Wednesday night, he was confirmed to be our top legal enforcer by a 52-47 vote; Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) broke with Democrats to vote for Sessions. Yet, while the attorney general took heat, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), the Senates only black Republican who supported his nomination, was bombarded by racist tweets by the Left.

Scott took to the Senate floor to deliver his remarks, where he referenced the hate thats been hurled at him, even repeating some of the greatest hits, while keeping the ones calling him the n-word off the record. As a black conservative Republican, he knew that such hate would be hurled at him. Im used to being attacked, he said. It comes with the territory (via Politico):

You are an Uncle Tom, Scott. Youre for Sessions. How does a black man turn on his own, Scott said, reading criticisms of himself on social media. "Tim Scott ... doesnt have a shred of honor. Hes a House Negro like the one in Django.

He added, I left out all the ones that used the n-word. Just felt like that would not be appropriate.

Besides being called a disgrace to his race, Scott noted that since hes viewed as being no ally of liberal America, he is therefore an enemy of black people. You all know thisits identity politics at its most toxic. So, while people say that Sessions is a racist, for which there is zero substantive evidence to support such a claim unlike the late Sen. Robert Byrds (D-WV) membership in the Ku Klux Klan, they should probably look at whats hurled at conservatives that happen to be people of color.

House negro. I would say thatswhats the wordoh, racist.

Also, it's the Senate GOP that have diverse staffs, not the Democrats. Scott has a black chief of staff, which is a rarity among Senate Democrats. He also mentioned this fact in his remarks.

"My chief of staff, the only until three weeks ago, the only African-American chief of staff in the United States Senate out of a 100 is the chief of staff for a Republican," he said."The second African-American chief of staff in the United States Senate is the chief of staff of a Republican."

Democrats seem to be all talk, no action on the issue of inclusion and diversity.

Claws Out For Ivanka Trump Show Liberal Love For Women Is A Sham – The Federalist

Women can be vicious. Just ask men. Better yet, ask other women. If theyre honest, theyll tell you. Women can be harsh to their own kind, especially liberal women. Thats what makes feminist campaigns like the Womens March a bit of a joke. Its not about women sticking up for one another. Its about liberal women advancing their own liberal agenda, and if youre not on board, youre attacked, viciously.

Just look at how Ivanka Trump is being treated. After she posted an adorable photo with her son, comedian Ilana Glazer of Broad City unfurled her claws.

Ivankas tweet didnt mock other women. In fact, many women could identify with her. Plenty of working moms have taken their kids to work, and women who are homemakers or work from home appreciate a mom who is active in their childrens lives.

I can bet if any liberal celebrity or politician tweeted the same thing, theyd be praised for it. But not Ivanka. Because shes her fathers daughter, she is unfairly attacked by other women.

The same goes for all the stores that are pulling or downplaying her clothing lineNordstrom, Neiman Marcus, T.J. Maxx, and Marshalls. Ivanka was shocked, of course. Why would they boycott her clothing line just because of her dads politics? Arent women supposed to be treated independently, separate from their male relatives?

Isnt this what we were told repeatedly about Hillary Clinton? It didnt matter what Bill did. Hillary was her own woman. She didnt have to answer for her husbands shortcomings and immoral behavior, particularly toward women. Yet this is what we get about Ivanka: While she is not her dad, she is complicit in his actions, especially considering her husband is her dads advisor.

Complicit in his actions? Which illegal or immoral actions is she involved in, exactly? Unlike Hillary, who actually took active steps to silence her husbands accusers of sexual assault and rape, Ivanka has done nothing even remotely similar. She has supported her dads candidacy, and she continues to support him, but she is not actively complicit in anything. Women are independent of men, right?

Or is that true only for liberal women? Only they are seen as individuals with identities of their own, but Republican women, well, they have no independent identities. Theyre appendages of the men in their lives. I call BS on that one.

Its this kind of hypocrisy from the Left that got Donald Trump elected. People are tired of it. They see behind the veil where petty, insecure people are pulling the levers. This is especially true of the feminist movement: Madonna, Ashley Judd, Scarlett Johannsson, Sarah Silverman, and all the rest of the liberal celebrities who are in meltdown mode right now are being exposed for the frauds they are.

Just like the organizers who refused to let pro-life women participate in the Womans March, and the conga line of liberal elites who bash conservative female pundits and politicians as if theyre Sarah Palin beating a halibut, women who attack Ivanka are backstabbing harpies. Thats all. Theyre not principled. They dont care about womens rights. They dont care about the dignity of all women. They care about one thingtheir own egos, which are wrapped up in their liberal politics. They dont care about you. They care about themselves.

Instead of engaging in rational debate, they attack, boycott, politicize, and propagandize. They bastardize their art and their platforms to perpetuate an ideology that undermines our republic, our freedom, the American people, and the very women they say they represent.

Its time we said Enough! Enough of the double standards. Enough of the vicious attacks on Republican women or anyone who dares to challenge the Left and their ideology, which isnt about empowering women at all. Its about empowering the state, the political elites, and their handmaidens in Hollywood.

Ivanka Trump is a successful, beautiful, strong woman who should be celebrated and supported for the example she sets for young women as a wife, mother, business woman, and, yes, even daughter. Is she perfect? No, none of us are. But to put a target on her merely because she loves and supports her father is the opposite of what feminism represents. Feminism is supposed to be about respecting a womans choices, seeing her independent of a man, and celebrating her on her own merit. Ivanka deserves that. We all do.

Correction: An earlier version of this article included TJ Maxx and Marshalls in a list of retailers that have pulled Ivanka Trumps clothing line. The two have so far kept her clothes on the shelves but removed them from special displays and signs.

Trevor Bauer goes on long rant defending tweet about liberal bias – Yahoo Sports

Cleveland Indians pitcher Trevor Bauer is determined. That much was clear when Bauer attempted to pitch through a painful cut on his pinky finger against the Toronto Blue Jays in the playoffs. Bauer even considered cauterizing the wound with a soldering iron just so he could take the mound. It shouldnt come as a surprise that hes persistent.

[Sign up for Yahoo Fantasy Baseball | 2017 Player Rankings]

That quality apparently extends off the field as well. Bauer proved as much after sending out a tweet about criticizing Apple and Twitter for only sending him negative Donald Trump articles on his phone.

Heres Bauer original tweet:

Since Bauer mixed sports and politics, there was sure to be an immense response to that tweet. Turns out, Bauer was ready for that. In the ensuing hours, Bauer responded to literally hundreds of tweetsabout his original comment.

Those responses varied in nature. Bauer tweeted fist pump emojis at fans who supported him, told fans who were unfollowing him good riddance, addressed his thoughts on climate change, declared himself one of the most scientific players in MLB and questioned whether Barack Obama was born in the United States.

Thats a wide-range of topics. Some of them make sense considering his initial tweet, while others seem far removed from his complaint. So, how long does it take for a baseball player to get from tweeting about liberal media bias to addressing climate change? Dont worry, we counted for you.

135 tweets!

Yes, since Bauers original tweet, hes sent out 135 responses to fans and critics defending his position. Like we said before, he can be persistent.

Theres a chance that figure will continue to grow, obviously. Bauer is no stranger to tweeting about politics and engaging people on social media. During the first Democratic debate last January, Bauer said he was appalled at what he was hearing. He warned critics on Twitter that the block button was ready in case anyone cared to challengehim.

[Newsletter: Get 5 great stories from the Yahoo Sports blogs in your inbox every morning!]

With that said, things seem to have quieted down. As of this writing, its been four hours since Bauer tweeted about anything. Hey, a guys gotta sleep sometime, right? Either that, or he has carpal tunnel after staying up all night shooting out hot tweets. It wouldnt bethe first time he injured a fingerplaying with modern technology.

Why Liberal Policies Are Terrible For Young People – Power Line (blog)

We often casually assume that it is natural for young people to be predominantly liberal. But this is wrong: liberal policies hurt the young worse than anyone else. They deprive young people of job opportunities, drive up the cost of health care, needlessly increase the price of housing, and saddle the young with trillions of dollars in debt.

One of Center of the American Experiments key themes in 2017 will be, why liberal policies are bad for the young. Among other things, this will be the topic of our quarterly lunch forum series. On Wednesday, February 22, Diana Furchtgott-Roth will kick off the series by talking about her book Disinherited: How Washington Is Betraying Americas Young. The forum will be at noon on the 22nd, a week from next Wednesday, at the Minneapolis Hilton.

If you live in or near the Twin Cities area, I strongly encourage you to attend. The Centers lunch forum series has been a huge hit, with over 400 attending our last forum to hear Heather Mac Donald talk about The War On Cops. This years series should be equally informative, and equally explosive. You can go here to register, or call Samantha Peterson at 612.584.4559.

Five tips on having a safe conversation with your liberal spouse or conservative brother – Fox News

No matter where you stand on the political aisle, we can all agree we are working through one of the most politically divisive times in our history. Many individuals can no longer visit some of the most popular social media platforms without seeing virtual-fights breaking out, which is leading to huge rifts between spouses, friends, co-workers and family.

It is not a stretch to say our country is a divided nation but, more importantly, we are now families, spouses and friends divided.

While some people cannot accept difference to the point where it is deemed as combative (and almost dangerous), the hope is your home life doesnt have to be that way solely because the socio-political climate over the last year has become more conflicted. The reality is, by using a methodology called Safe Conversations, people can have very different points of view that doesnt have to lead to social unrest.

Safe Conversations allows individuals to talk without criticizing, listen without judging, and connect beyond differences. Based on the most advanced relational and neurological science, Safe Conversations seeks to interrupt the downward cycle of family fragmentation that can reduce violence, strengthen communities and ultimately raise the joy index of a city.

The following tips provides a starting point on how to have a healthy and productive conversation with individuals who have opposing viewpoints:

1. The first step is to make an appointment to honor boundaries. This appointment will allow everyone to gather and acknowledge each others viewpoints without starting a potentially difficult conversation off-the-cuff. Respect is crucial in setting up an appointment to honor boundaries.

2. Once you choose a designated time to honor boundaries, identify the topic of opposition. The topic needs to be truly defined and specific for the brain to not jump to the human species genetic paranoid state of mind. Think about it this way when a person tells you they would like to talk, what is typically your first thought? Most of us jump to an exaggerated conclusion and begin to think of worst case scenarios. By defining the topic prior to communicating, it removes this apprehension for all individuals.

3. Next, implement I language when talking. Meaning always say I rather than you when having an oppositional conversation. Not only is this called the Sender Responsibility, it removes any blame away from the one receiving the senders opposing beliefs.

4. Individuals should also conduct a tactic called mirroring when someone talks. For example, once an individual is done stating his/her viewpoint, you respond back, What I am hearing is XYZ. This tactic allows for everyone to maintain accuracy, while also ensuring that you understand the Senders viewpoints.

5. Lastly, acknowledge that the other person makes sense. Even though you might not agree with the individuals viewpoint, you must acknowledge that their opinion is validated. From this moment, you can then share your point of view after validating their first point of view. A bridge has now been created between said individuals, and two opposing realities are now interfacing without judgment. Ultimately, the goal of having this type of conversation is to have both realities change without judgment.

Its absolutely possible to fully connect with people despite your differences, but to open that door, you have to believe its possible.

A negative attitude is the fastest roadblock to productive conversation, so over the next 30 days, try taking the Zero Negativity Challenge. Teach yourself to notice negativity and then redo the transaction by mentally changing gears to become positive again. There is an overwhelming amount of negativity in the world, but you can change thatstarting with yourself.

Dr. Harville Hendrix and Dr. Helen LaKelly Hunt are the creators of Safe Conversations | Relationships First, a nonprofit that envisions a world where everyone feels safe, valued and connected. For those who are interested in seeing these relationship techniques firsthand, we will be hosting a one-of-a-kind relationship event on Saturday, February 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (CST).

Fiscal Freedom | Prometheism.net – Part 2

A fiscal year (or financial year, or sometimes budget year) is a period used for calculating annual (yearly) financial statements in businesses and other organizations all over the world. In many jurisdictions, regulatory laws regarding accounting and taxation require such reports once per twelve months, but do not require that the period reported on constitutes a calendar year (that is, 1 January to 31 December). Fiscal years vary between businesses and countries. The fiscal year may also refer to the year used for income tax reporting.

The fiscal year end (FYE) is the date that marks the end of the fiscal year. Some companies choose to end their fiscal year such that it ends on the same day of the week each year, e.g. the day that is closest to a particular date (for example, the Friday closest to 31 December). Under such a system, some fiscal years will have 52 weeks and others 53 weeks. A major corporation that has adopted this approach is Cisco Systems.[1]

Nevertheless, the fiscal year is identical to the calendar year for about 65% of publicly traded companies in the United States and for a majority of large corporations in the UK[2] and elsewhere (with notable exceptions Australia, New Zealand and Japan).[3]

Many universities have a fiscal year which ends during the summer, both to align the fiscal year with the academic year (and, in some cases involving public universities, with the state governments fiscal year), and because the school is normally less busy during the summer months. In the northern hemisphere this is July in one year to June in the next year. In the southern hemisphere this is January to December of a single calendar year.

Some media/communication based organizations use a broadcast calendar as the basis for their fiscal year.

The fiscal year is usually denoted by the year in which it ends, so United States of America federal government spending incurred on 14 November 2016 would belong to fiscal year 2017, operating on a fiscal calendar of OctoberSeptember.[4]

The NFL uses the term league year, which in effect forms the leagues fiscal year. By rule, the fiscal year begins at 4 PM EDT on 10 March of each calendar year. All financial reports are based on each fiscal year. However, the fiscal year is denoted in the NFL by the year where it starts, not where it ends, unlike most designations.

In some jurisdictions, particularly those that permit tax consolidation, companies that are part of a group of businesses must use nearly the same fiscal year (differences of up to three months are permitted in some jurisdictions, such as the U.S. and Japan), with consolidating entries to adjust for transactions between units with different fiscal years, so the same resources will not be counted more than once or not at all.[citation needed]

In Afghanistan, the fiscal year was recently changed from 1 Hamal 29 Hoot (21 March 20 March) to 1 Jadi 30 Qaus (21 December 20 December). The fiscal year runs with the Afghan calendar, thus resulting in difference of the Gregorian dates once in a four-year span.[citation needed]

In Australia, the fiscal year or, more commonly, financial year, starts on 1 July and ends on 30 June. For personal income tax after the financial year ends, individuals have until 31 October to lodge their return (unless they use a tax agent).[5] This fiscal year definition is used both for official purposes and by the overwhelming majority of private enterprises, but this is not legally mandated.[6] A company may, for example, opt for a financial year that always ends at the end of a week (and therefore is not exactly one calendar year in length), or opt for each financial year to end on a different date to match the reporting cycles of its foreign parent.

In Austria the fiscal year is the calendar year, January 1st December 31st.

In Bangladesh, the fiscal year starts on 1 July and ends on 30 June.

In Belarus, the fiscal year starts on 1 January and ends on 31 December.

In Brazil, the fiscal year starts on 1 January and ends on 31 December. Citizens pay income tax (when needed) starting in May, but the form filling goes from March to April. All tax declarations must be done on-line using government written free software.[citation needed]

In Bulgaria, the fiscal year matches the calendar year both for personal income tax [7] and for corporate taxes.[8]

In Canada,[9] the governments financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March (Example 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017 for the current financial year).

For individuals in Canada, the fiscal year runs from 1 January to 31 December.

The fiscal year for all entities starts on 1 January and ends 31 December, consistent with the calendar year, to match the tax year, statutory year, and planning year.[citation needed]

In Colombia, the fiscal year starts 1 January ending on 31 December. Yearly taxes are due in the middle of March/April for corporations while citizens pay income tax (when needed) starting in August, ending in September, according to the last 2 digits of the national ID.[citation needed]

The fiscal year in Costa Rica spans from 1 October until 30 September. Taxpayers are required to pay the tributes before 15 December of each year.[citation needed]

In the Arab Republic of Egypt, the fiscal year starts on 1 July and concludes on 30 June.[citation needed]

The fiscal year matches the calendar year, and has since at least 1911.[10]

In the Hellenic Republic, the fiscal year starts on 1 January and concludes on 31 December.

In Hong Kong,[11] the governments financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March (Example 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017 for the current financial year).

In India, the governments financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March midnight. Example: 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017 for the financial year 20162017. It is also abbreviated as FY17.[12][13]

Companies following the Indian Depositary Receipt (IDR) are given freedom to choose their financial year. For example, Standard Chartereds IDR follows the UK calendar despite being listed in India. Companies following Indian fiscal year get to know their economical health on 31 March of every Indian financial or fiscal year.

There was discussions by the newly formed NITI Aayog, in the month of July 2016,in a meeting organised by the PM Modi, that the next fiscal year may start from 1 January to 31 December after the end of the current five-year plan.[14]

In Iran, the fiscal year starts usually on March 21 (1st of Farvardin) and concludes on next years March 20 (29th of Esfand) in Solar Hijri calendar [15]

Ireland used the year ending 5 April until 2001 when it was changed, at the request of Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy, to match the calendar year (the 2001 tax year was nine months, from April to December)[citation needed]

Since 2002, it is aligned with the calendar year: 1 January to 31 December.[16]

In Israel the fiscal year is from 1 January until 31 December.[17]

In Italy the fiscal year was from 1 July to 30 June until 1965; now it is from 1 January until 31 December.[citation needed]

In Japan,[18] the governments financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March. The fiscal year is represented by the calendar year in which the period begins, followed by the word nendo (); for example the fiscal year from 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017 is called 2016nendo.

Japans income tax year runs from 1 January to 31 December, but corporate tax is charged according to the corporations own annual period.[citation needed]

In Macau, the governments financial year runs from 1 January to 31 December (Example 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2016 for the current financial year).

In Mexico the fiscal year starts on January 1 and ends on December 31.

In Myanmar,[19] the fiscal year goes from 1 April to 31 March.

The fiscal year in Nepal starts from Shrawan 1 (4th month of Bikram calendar) and ends on Ashad 31 (3rd month of Bikram calendar). Shrawan 1 roughly falls on mid July.[20]

The New Zealand Governments fiscal[21] and financial reporting[22] year begins on 1 July and concludes on 30 June[23] of the following year and applies to the budget. The company and personal financial year[24] begins on 1 April and finishes on 31 March and applies to company and personal income tax.

The Pakistan Governments fiscal year starts on 1 July of the previous calendar year and concludes on 30 June. Private companies are free to observe their own accounting year, which may not be the same as Government of Pakistans fiscal year.[citation needed]

In Portugal the fiscal year starts on January 1 and ends on December 31.

The fiscal year matches the calendar year, and has since at least 1911.[10]

The fiscal year for the calculation of personal income taxes runs from 1 January to 31 December.[citation needed]

The fiscal year for the Government of Singapore and many government-linked corporations runs from 1 April to 31 March.[citation needed]

Corporations and organisations are permitted to select any date to mark the end of each fiscal year, as long as this date remains constant.[citation needed]

In South Africa the fiscal year for the Government of South Africa starts on 1 April and ends 31 March.[citation needed]

The year of assessment for individuals covers twelve months, beginning on 1 March and ending on the final day of February the following year. The Act also provides for certain classes of taxpayers to have a year of assessment ending on a day other than the last day of February. Companies are permitted to have a tax year ending on a date that coincides with their financial year. Many older companies still use a tax year that runs from 1 July to 30 June, inherited from the British system. A common practice for newer companies is to run their tax year from 1 March to the final day of February following, to synchronize with the tax year for individuals.[citation needed]

In South Korea(Republic of Korea) the fiscal year starts on 1 January and ends 31 December.[citation needed]

In Spain the fiscal year starts on 1 January and ends 31 December.[25]

The fiscal year for individuals runs from 1 January to 31 December.[26]

The fiscal year for an organisation is typically one of the following (cf. Swedish Wikipedia):

However, all calendar months are allowed. If an organisation wishes to change into a non-calendar year, permission from the Tax Authority is required.[27][28]

Under the Income Tax Act of Taiwan, the fiscal year commences on 1 January and ends on 31 December of each calendar year. However, an enterprise may elect to adopt a special fiscal year at the time it is established and can request approval from the tax authorities to change its fiscal year.[29]

The Thai governments fiscal year (FY) begins on 1 October and ends on 30 September of the following year.[30] FY2015 dates from 1 October 2014 30 September 2015. The Thai governments year for individual income tax is the calendar year (1 January 31 December)

In Ukraine, the fiscal year matches with the calendar year which starts on 1 January and ends 31 December.

In the United Arab Emirates, the fiscal year starts on 1 January and ends 31 December.[citation needed]

In the United Kingdom,[31] the financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March for the purposes of corporation tax[32] and government financial statements.[33] For the self-employed and others who pay personal tax the fiscal year starts on 6 April and ends on 5 April of the next calendar year.[34]

Although United Kingdom corporation tax is charged by reference to the governments financial year, companies can adopt any year as their accounting year: if there is a change in tax rate, the taxable profit is apportioned to financial years on a time basis.[citation needed]

A number of major corporations that were once government-owned, such as BT Group and the National Grid, continue to use the governments financial year, which ends on the last day of March, as they have found no reason to change since privatisation.[citation needed]

The 5 April year end for personal tax and benefits reflects the old ecclesiastical calendar, with New Year falling on 25 March (Lady Day), the difference being accounted for by the eleven days missed out when Great Britain converted from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar in 1752 (the British tax authorities, and landlords were unwilling to lose 11 days of tax and rent revenue, so under provision 6 (Times of Payment of Rents, Annuities, &c.) of the Calendar (New Style) Act 1750, the 17523 tax year was extended by 11 days). From 1753 until 1799, the tax year in Great Britain began on 5 April, which was the old style new year of 25 March. A 12th skipped Gregorian leap day in 1800 changed its start to 6 April. It was not changed when a 13th Julian leap day was skipped in 1900, so the start of the personal tax year in the United Kingdom is still 6 April.[35][36][37]

The United States federal governments fiscal year is the 12-month period ending on 30 September of that year, having begun on 1 October of the previous calendar year. In particular, the identification of a fiscal year is the calendar year in which it ends; thus, the current fiscal year is 2017, often written as FY2017 or FY17, which began on 1 October 2016 and which will end on 30 September 2017.

Prior to 1976, the fiscal year began on 1 July and ended on 30 June. The Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974 made the change to allow Congress more time to arrive at a budget each year, and provided for what is known as the transitional quarter from 1 July 1976 to 30 September 1976. An earlier shift in the federal governments fiscal year was made in 1843, shifting the fiscal year from a calendar year to one starting on 1 July.[38]

For example, the United States government fiscal year for 2017 is:

State governments set their own fiscal year. It may or may not align with the federal calendar. For example, in California, the states fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30 each year.[39]

The tax year for a business is governed by the fiscal year it chooses. A business may choose any consistent fiscal year that it wants; however, for seasonal businesses such as farming and retail, a good account practice is to end the fiscal year shortly after the highest revenue time of year. Consequently, most large agriculture companies end their fiscal years after the harvest season, and most retailers end their fiscal years shortly after the Christmas shopping season.

The fiscal year for individuals and entities to report and pay income taxes is often known as the taxpayers tax year or taxable year. Taxpayers in many jurisdictions may choose their tax year.[40] In federal countries (e.g., United States, Canada, Switzerland), state/provincial/cantonal tax years must be the same as the federal year. Nearly all jurisdictions require that the tax year be 12 months or 52/53 weeks.[41] However, short years are permitted as the first year or when changing tax years.[42]

Most countries require all individuals to pay income tax based on the calendar year. Significant exceptions include:

Many jurisdictions require that the tax year conform to the taxpayers fiscal year for financial reporting. The United States is a notable exception: taxpayers may choose any tax year, but must keep books and records for such year.[41]

For Philly Cops Already Awash in Overtime Pay, Another Boost — Thanks to Trump – NBC 10 Philadelphia

The endorsement of President Donald Trump by Philadelphias Fraternal Order of Police last September has proven fruitful in at least one way for the unions members: Fatter paychecks.

The many protests and demonstrations on the streets of Philadelphia in January translated into nearly $3 million in overtime for city cops, according to figures provided by the city.

The civil unrest, a spokesman for Mayor Jim Kenney said, was the direct result of rushed White House policy announcements.

The OT total does not include what the city police department spent overall for extra-hours work by its officers. The department doles out tens of millions each year in overtime for court appearances and investigative work.

The large amount last month related only to demonstration details will likely boost OT spending that has annually outpaced what the city anticipates, quarterly budget reports show. The police department had already spent $3.5 million more through the end of September than budget officials expected for the first three months of the current fiscal year, which began July 1.

And the city police department not only overspends on OT, it experienced a considerable rise each of the last three years: from $49 million in fiscal year 2014 to $53 million in 2015 to $64 million in 2016.

A spokesman for the police department did not respond to questions about the increases in annual overtime spending or how much the department spent in January on OT in addition to the $2.85 million for demonstrations.

The city has hosted large-scale events in recent years that some of the overtime increases could be attributed to: Pope Francis visit in 2015 and the Democratic National Convention in 2016.

As for January, which saw thousands turn out for the Womens March on Jan. 21 and the Republican Congressional Caucus Retreat Jan. 25-27, Kenney spokesman Mike Dunn pointed to the new White House administrations actions.

The increased number of demonstrations we've seen over these past few weeks are the direct result of rushed White House policy announcements and implementation, spokesman Mike Dunn said. They highlight how important it is for the White House to fully vet policies before they are imposed, for Congress to insist on its legislative oversight as well, and for our federal representatives to open their doors to their constituents.

Thousands Gather at PHL to Protest Travel Ban

The city budget office releases quarterly reports on spending, providing a look at both year-to-date totals and how much above or below each departments spending is compared to the budget adopted each June. The initial spending plan includes anticipated expenditures for costs like overtime.

Dunn did not provide insight into how, if at all, the city compensates for quarterly overspending.

A City Council committee holds a hearing each quarter on changes to city spending, but its oversight powers are limited to the equivalent of a rubber stamp, one Councilwoman previously admitted.

In addition to the police overtime, city workers in other departments also received additional pay related to the January uptick in demonstrations: $35,700 for the fire department, $22,000 for the public property department, $15,400 for Streets and $7,000 for Fleet.

In total, the city paid out more than $2.9 million.

As you can see, the cost to the City of these demonstrations is significant, and places an increased burden on our police force, Dunn said. We are proud of the PPD who have worked long hours to ensure public safety and freedom of expression go hand in hand.

Trump Threatens to Cut Off Government Funds to Universities, and Why Not? – PanAm Post

Protests turned violent at UC Berkley, which sparked the tweet by Trump (ABC 7).

By Brittany Hunter

Milo Yiannopoulos, the controversial and polarizing poster boy of the alt-right, was scheduled to speak at the University of California at Berkeley last week. However, thanks to destructive riots that resulted in almost $100,000 in damages, the event was canceled just hours before it was due to begin.

As expected, President Trump had strong opinions about the incident, which he made publicly known on his Twitter account.

Threatening to cut almost $500 million in federal funding, Trump chastised the historic California university for canceling the event and accused its administration of obstructing the First Amendment right to free speech.

But notice: this suggestion comes as a threat, as punishment for failing to control protesters, the withdrawal of a subsidy as a punitive measure. This is not the way to achieve what we desperately need: cutting off all federal funds for universities as a matter of fiscal soundness and the principle of freedom itself.

Cut them Off!

Whether he realizes it or notand it is almost certain that he does notPresident Trumps statement provided a compelling case for ending federal funding to all institutions of higher education.

One of the many problematic issues with federal funding is the tendency of politicians to use it as a bargaining chip against the opposition.

Partisan politics can turn ugly rather quickly, which is why budget cuts are often perceived as punishments rather than sensible economic decisions. As the saying goes, he who holds the purse strings holds the power.

Unfortunately, federal funding is almost always used as a means to force compliance from those receiving the financial aid. Institutions that choose to accept this money are soon likely to discover that they are required to adhere to certain stipulations that might not otherwise have been agreed to.

The Common Core standards, for example, were pushed onto the states through a federal stimulus package. Once this federal money was accepted, the states were required to adopt a curriculum that met certain standards.

The only way to really stay autonomous is to simply stop accepting federal funding.

Conveniently enough, the government was waiting in the wings with a ready-made plan that accomplished this goal. If states refused to comply, the federal money was retracted.

Luckily, private institutions are not subject to the same rules as the public sector. For those organizations that operate solely on private funds, it is much more difficult for the federal government to interfere, although not impossible.

If, for example, the student body was opposed to the idea of hosting a speaker they strongly disagreed with, a private university would have every right to deny that speaker access to campus facilities.

However, so long as federal funding is given and received by institutions of higher education, campuses have little to no recourse when it comes to censoring certain individuals on campus.

While President Trump does not actually have the authority to cut federal funding from U.C. Berkeley, every threat, substantial or not, comes with a hurricane of hysteria and fear over what the new president may do.

The only way to really stay autonomous without binding yourself to federal conditions is to simply stop accepting and stop offering this money altogether.

Espaol On Thursday, February 9th, Reuters revealed that the Venezuelan state-run oil company PDVSA has not sent oil and fuel that it owes to China and Russia for months. "Delayed shipments to these crucial political allies and trade partners, which have given Venezuela at least US $55 billion in credit, provide a new vision of PDVSA's operational failures and its impact on the country's socialist economy," Reuters reports. Therefore, "the PDVSA crisis" strongly affects "a nation suffering from three-digit inflation and a food shortage that reminds us of the Soviet Union." In fact, the latest estimates suggest that 87% of the country's income comes from selling oil. "The total value of the past due shipments to China and Russia's state-owned companies is about US $750 million," according to the Reuters agency's analysis of PDVSA's documents. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1459522593195-0'); }); Meanwhile, by the end of January of this year, PDVSA owed these companies at least 10 million barrels of oil. This amounts to a 10 month delay, according to the British agency's information. The statement said, "Shipments to China and Russia are critical forPDVSA's financial health because companies in both countries buy around a third of PDVSA's total oil and fuel exports." For years, the credit that both nations provided has been indispensable for Nicols Maduro. In fact, infrastructure and social investment in Venezuela has been financed mainly by China. Maduro is facing a domestic firestorm over economic collapse, threats to ban opposition political parties, and major social unrest that has gripped the nation in the wake of a collapse in global petroleum prices. How to Modify Money Management After the Presidential Election – Yahoo Finance

IRVINE, CA / ACCESSWIRE / February 10, 2017 / MoneyNing.com published a new blog addressing the question of how to change money management since the recent election. Financial blogger David Ning urges readers not to be reactive, but to follow sound financial practices, including living within ones means and protecting assets. Since the results of the presidential election in November became known, financial information site MoneyNing.com has been receiving an increased number of questions regarding how the election affects their personal money management strategy.

The question was addressed in a recent blog post aptly titled, "How to Change Money Management After the Election." The bottom line, according to the blog poster and site founder David Ning, is straightforward: "don't."

"First of all," says Ning, "it's important for people to understand that policies come and go, but the basics of financial management remain the same. Planning ahead is good, but there's no crystal ball that can predict the outcome of any particular policy changes that may be implemented by the new administration. So for individuals, it's important to stay focused on the basics of financial management."

Living within ones means is the first step. Ning advocates assessing income and expenses to make sure people spend less than they earn. An honest look at where people are spending money can be shocking, but is vital to getting spending under own control to begin building wealth from there.

One of the best ways to cut costs is to make sure to get the best value for your money. Often consumers can save by buying in bulk, or at least in multiples. This even applies to household expenses like cable TV and internet service. For example, Verizon offers bundled services, which means that by getting television and internet services both through them, there is a much lower price than paying for the two services separately. Sometimes there may be a landline phone thrown in, or for a very low monthly fee.

Several additional principles are addressed in the blog post, which also admits that fine tuning may be necessary. It is important to be aware of changes to laws that affect each individual, but staying the course once there is a solid financial plan still seems to be the best advice available.

Sealand man jailed for high speed police chase near Chester – LeaderLive

A man who drove dangerously in a bid to get away from police has been jailed.

Stefan Kelly, 23, at one stage drove around a police officer who stood in front of him to stop him but he later crashed into another vehicle.

Kelly, of East Green in Sealand, received a 12-month prison sentence and was banned from driving for 18 months.

He was also ordered at Mold Crown Court to take an extended driving test.

Judge Niclas Parry described it as a prolonged piece of dangerous driving when he had repeatedly put other road users at risk.

But for the evasive actions of other drivers, there would have been other collisions, Judge Parry said.

He ignored warnings during the police chase and there was a collision with another vehicle.

The judge said all that occurred when he was uninsured and a disqualified driver, which showed an utter disregard for court orders and for the safety of other road users.

His case was aggravated by his previous convictions which included a robbery charge, two previous charges of aggravated vehicle taking and a previous conviction for dangerous driving.

Only an immediate custodial sentence can be justified, he said, but he would receive maximum credit for his guilty pleas.

The court heard how Kelly admitted dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without insurance and driving while disqualified when he appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court last month.

His case was sent to the crown court for sentence.

Prosecuting barrister Matthew Dunford told how at 2.30pm on Friday, July 29 last year the defendant was seen driving a BMW 318 in an erratic way behind an unmarked police car on the A494.

The officer lit up the vehicles stop sign but the defendant overtook the police car and pulled in front of him, before exiting on a slip road towards Chester.

He drove at about 45 mph in a 30 mph limit area and went on the wrong side of the road, overtaking vehicles and causing oncoming vehicles to brake.

Kelly performed a sudden stop and left his car, was pursued on foot but then ran back into the vehicle.

The officer stood in front of the vehicle but Kelly drove around him and sped off, explained Mr Dunford.

Again the driving was erratic and caused other road users to take evasive action, he said.

The police located the car about a mile from where it had last been seen.

He was said to have done a wheel spin away from a junction leaving plumes of tyre smoke.

But then he drove into the back of a Mondeo being driven by Philip Keith and Kelly drove off without stopping, leaving the other driver with a sore neck and pain to his left hand.

His passenger also had a sore neck following the impact.

Kelly was eventually tracked down by the police but in interview gave no comment replies.

Robin Boag, defending, said Kelly suffered from dyslexia, he was working, and his girlfriend was due to give birth.

They had just been allocated a tenancy in Mold and it was believed a move from Deeside would be good for him.

He had convictions but had not been in trouble since 2013 and he had shown an ability to stay out of trouble.

Mr Boag suggested a suspended sentence with rehabilitation but the judge took a different view.

In praise of utopias, not dystopias: Salutin – Toronto Star

Margaret Atwood's dytopian classic The Handmaid's Tale, which is depicted in this promotional photo for the operatic version of the story performed by the Canadian Opera Company, has enjoyed renewed popularity since Donald Trump's election. ( CANADIAN OPERA COMPANY )

Theres something touching in how sales of 1984 have risen since Trump. Amazon is out of stock. Other dystopian novels, like Atwoods The Handmaids Tale, are doing well. Its one way to deal with a shock to the system: buy a book; then, basically, let it sit since it probably wont have much to do with whats spooking you on CNN. Its about the illusion of control.

If you prefer denial, always an option, you could try utopias instead, though they arent selling as briskly. Theres Utopia itself (1516) by Thomas More; Erewhon (1872); News from Nowhere (1890). Glen Newey writes in the London Review that utopias proliferated in the 19th century but today dystopias come a dime a dozen. If youre a rebel, go utopian this season. Of course, there are utopian books and actual utopian experiments.

So Ive been reading Chasing Utopias, by Canadian writer David Leach, a book about an experiment. In 1989, age 20, he lived on an Israeli kibbutz for a year. He isnt Jewish but never mind. For 50 years after Israels founding, a kibbutz, or collective farm, was where youth went to find themselves. It often worked. But that utopian dream crashed as Israel transformed; so 20 years later, Leach returned to see if the magic had died, or just moved along.

There were never many kibbutzim: a few hundred perhaps but they punched above their weight symbolically. They were idealistic and egalitarian: no private property, equal incomes, collective decision-making, and all the kids lived together, separately from parents, since birth.

By 2010, when Leach revisited, most had privatized. No childrens quarters. Equality had vanished, incomes werent identical. Kibbutz members paid fees, like condo owners. Partly, its because Israel abandoned socialist models and became aggressively capitalist.

But the deeper impediment lay in the fact that those idealistic communities were often built, literally, on land that had been unceremoniously taken from Palestinians. Kibbutz members could dig below their homes and find ruins from the village that had been razed. That might be unnerving. Leach describes a kibbutznik who spent the rest of his life trying to force Israelis to confront the ugly reality under their feet. One persons utopia is anothers dystopia- a good reason not to separate the categories rigidly.

The book comes most alive in its second half when Leach, abandoning nostalgia, looks for ways that the idealism of the kibbutz may have funneled into new utopian projects elsewhere in Israel, like a Palestinian architects plan for a 37 km bridge linking Gaza to the West Bank, with benefits for everyone along its way. He sees the vision of utopia rising again.

Hence my preference for utopias; they keep chugging ahead into the future, unlike dystopias, which are meant to forewarn but can as easily depress and demobilize. Both are probably complementary and often flip sides of each other, like a kibbutz winery built over Palestinian olive groves. Dystopias are warnings, utopias are yearnings. Utopias are often well-intended, exhaustively thought-out, yet become disasters. Dystopias are always inadvertent; no one sets out to create a hell, the aim was often a utopia. Thats the charge usually levelled at communist experiments in Cuba, China or the Soviet Union.

One of my favourite utopian books is Fanshen (1966) by U.S. writer and farmer William Hinton. It describes a Chinese village in 1948, as the revolution sweeps through, trying to transform from feudalism to communism, via the deliberations and decisions of its peasant population. They were definitely chasing Utopia. Its fascinating, inconclusive and real. Hinton called it a documentary.

In later years, he returned to the village often, as it stumbled or advanced. He said the problems werent only objective; they lay in ways that the people trying to construct utopia were themselves shaped by nonutopian reality which they could only transcend within limits. So theyd always be inadequate to the task and you should never be surprised by shortfalls, tawdry human failures (including destructive illicit affairs) and screw-ups.

When humans have evolved more, so will their utopias. By then, if the species survives, they might do rather well, so that utopias of our era could start looking unambitious.

Meanwhile do you despair? Retreat into literature and write book versions only? Or go ahead and fail, but be ready to get up and start the chase again. That could be the utopian motto: Go Ahead and Fail.

Asia and Oceania members get most out of FIBA National Federations Marketing and Communications Workshop in … – FIBA

FIBA Asia & Oceanian Communications & Marketing Workshop participants

BEIRUT - There was a real buzz in Beirut this week as 15 national member federations from Asia came together for a landmark Marketing and Communications Workshop in preparation for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Qualifiers.

Following on from a highly-successful European edition of the workshop held in Munich last week, the two-day event organised by FIBA's Regional Office in Asia was the first-ever joint Asia/Oceania marketing workshop as participants from Australia and New Zealand joined their Asian counterparts to pool ideas, experiences and gain some expert insight.

The workshop was an important illustration of FIBA's continued commitment to prepare all of its national member federations all around the world for the New Competition System which comes intoeffect in November.

There was a strong emphasis on all aspects of marketing and communications, with delegates left highly enthused by the experience.

"It's a big chance to spread the game of basketball in Japan," said Mitsuhiro Hirota, the Deputy Secretary General of the Japanese Basketball Federation (JBA). "This workshop helped us in understanding how to show and tell the sponsors about the New Competition System as well the technique and methods in exposing it to the fans and the world."

With active participation at the heart of the workshop, delegates made the most of the opportunities available to gather information and network with each other.

Everyone was provided with the latest information relating to the implementation of the Qualifiers, along with expert analysis on how to package the rights, as well as selling and promoting them by using the tools provided by FIBA.

"It gave us a clear understanding of how we should be able to 'sell' the New Competition System to the sponsors - as well as the technique and tools of exposing our national teams," said Basketball Australia (BA) CEO, Anthony Moore.

The event in Beirut was the second of four global workshops, with further ones scheduled to take place in Africa and the Americas.

Getting to know the Seychelles – Alternatives Journal (blog)

Hi! Im Mimi Shaftoe, and Im currently living in the Seychelles. Im here with my friend Olivia for a four month internship withthe Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles, a local NGO dedicated to providing environmental conservation education to children and youth in schools. I cant wait to share my adventures with you in this blog!

Also check out our new Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles Instagram accountfor more about what Olivia and I are doing here.

********

Its so funny how much more you notice about your surroundings when youre away from home. The plants for instance seem more alive, and they have such huge leaves! The vibrant greenery here is a striking contrast to the grey winter city landscapes in Canada where the trees are sleepily awaiting spring. Even commonplace creatures here like the giant tortoises my aunt has as pets, crow-sized fruit bats, house geckos, and the small orange birds called fodies, which are as common here as sparrows back home, are exciting for Olivia and I. Already, in the three weeks Ive been here Ive seen so much beautiful wildlife.

TheSeychelles are made up of many small islands. (Photo: Mimi Shaftoe)

On a hike up Morne Blanc mountain, we saw native thief palms, named Lattanyen in Creole, with black spikes on the stems of their leaves, and soaring tropic birds with their long white tails. We heard the loud peeping of one of the worlds smallest species of frog: the tiny sooglossids, though weve yet to see one. Kayaking up a river near Port Launay, we saw colourful red and blue fiddler crabs waving their one oversized white claw, and various types of mangroves with their complex root systems. On our first few snorkeling ventures so far, we had not made it all the way out to the reef before getting distracted by the multi-coloured tropical fish, electric blue, bright red and yellow, darting among seaweed and coral.

Underneath the amazement and awe I feel at seeing these incredible animals and plants is a quiet but persistent undercurrent of urgency. These ecosystems are fragile, after all. Next time I come, how much more will be gone? The country is made up of many small islands, so the endemic wildlife here is particularly susceptible to introduced species, habitat destruction, and the effects of climate change. Before human settlement, there were no land mammals in Seychelles besides several species of bats, so the arrival of black rats for example, has wreaked considerable havoc on endemic birds and invertebrates. Human construction projects, from hotels to reclaimed land, have destroyed many important habitats, and coral reef bleaching events are becoming more of an issue.

Citizens taking action - and taking to the streets -to protect it for future generations. (Photo: Mimi Shaftoe)

But the Seychellois people are proud of their natural heritage, and they are taking action to protect it for future generations. For instance, hotel projects are now required to undergo rigorous environmental impact assessments, and theres a new ban on plastic bags coming into effect this summer. In the few weeks weve been here, weve visited school wildlife clubs, attended the national World Wetland Day and Protected Area Day events, and been to the launch of a community-based conservation organization. Seeing so many passionate students, teachers and citizens working towards a more sustainable future is inspiring. Im looking forward to seeing what adventures the next few months hold!

All inclusive Caribbean trips with nonstop flights hit the vacation spot – The Tennessean

All inclusive vacation brochures from Vacation Express.(Photo: Mary Hance / The Tennessean)Buy Photo

If you are a fan of beach vacations and want to know on the front end exactly how much you will spend, an all-inclusive Caribbean trip may be right up your alley.

The reason I am writingabout these now (instead of some other time of year) is that American and Delta airlines currently have nonstop seasonal once a weekflights to Cancun, and tour operator Vacation Express kicks off its 2017 season of Nashville charter packagesin March with nonstop all inclusive service to Cancun, and later to the Dominican Republic, the Grand Bahamas, and Jamaica.

These packaged vacations that you can book on your own or through a travel agent, generally bundle airfare, transportation to your hotel, your accommodations at a fancy beachfront resort, and in most cases all food and drink, plus free nighttime entertainment, at one reasonable fixed price.

Other tour operators like Apple Vacations and GoGo Tours also offer all inclusive vacations, but Vacation Express is the only one currently offering non stop service from Nashville to these Caribbean destinations.

And for my money (and time), the direct service adds to the appeal of these trips.

It is hard to believe that you can get to these exotic emerald water beaches quicker than you could speed your SUV to 30A or the Gulf Shores area.

With some of these packages, you can hop on a nonstop charter flight at 7 in the morning and be on the Caribbean beach by about noon. And the price can be as little as $1,000 per person for a six-night stay, depending on when you go and what kind of resort you choose.

"They are very user friendly," said Genie Herron, whose Herron Travel agency sends dozens of couples and families and other groups on these package trips each year.

"People really seem to like them, because everythingis included," she said. "For the most part, you knowwhat you are going to get."

Herron says the price differences are generally determined bythe quality of the resort. She explained that vacationers can choose their resort based on the star rating system that Vacation Express has, as well as on TripAdvisor reviews and the information that her agency pulls together from their trips and from their other clients' experiences. In most cases, the resort have a base price and then some upgrade options for ocean view, poolside, etc.

Beth Smith, of Southern Cross Travel and Tours in Mt. Juliet, is also a fan of these affordable and predictable vacations. "People really like that the food, and drink and entertainment and non-motorized sports are all included. And there are some resorts where kids can stay in a room for free." Herronsaid the feedback that her travel team gets on these trips is generally positive.

"We try to find out as much as possible about what they want andtry to match the people"with the resorts that have what the amenities they want. She said that some properties are adult-only;some are very family-focused and have more amenities and perks than others."Some offer golf, or casinos, or discos, or scuba or tennis or honeymoon packages." Smith said some of the resorts are divided where there are "adult only"areas and family areas, making them very versatile for destination weddings and other trips that attract groups with a variety of ages and interests. She said the best prices will be before and after the school year, and not in March when so many spring break travelers will hit the beaches. "April and May are good the weather is good and the prices can be better," Smith said.

Donna Lynch, who has just arranged her third all inclusive trip for her family of 18 (three generations rangingin age from 7-71) says compared to their previous beach-house trips to the Gulf Coast, the all-inclusive "is just a whole lot easier.

"With 11 grandchildren, if they want a snack, they just go get it (at the all inclusive resorts). At the beach house, we were making breakfast and then getting lunch ready. It took four cars to get there and when we got there, an $800 trip to the grocery.Thecost (of the all inclusive) may be a little more but it is just easy and the places have been nice,"she said referring to the resorts they have stayed in near Cancun and Punta Cana.

RafaelRoman, business development manager for Vacation Express which has relationships with 600 hotels in the Caribbean, says Nashville is his top market amongthe six states he oversees.

He said the price range is wide - $699 to $2,000 - for a six night stay. "The price really depends on the hotel. The hotel amenities make the difference."

Details of the four Vacation Express direct charter flights from Nashville

Cancun: These all-inclusive packages include air and six nights and run March 12 - August 6 with Sunday departures and Saturday returns.

Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic: These all inclusive packages include air, plus six nights and run May 14- July 30, with Sunday departures and Saturday returns

Grand Bahamas: These packages include air and four nights and the departure return dates vary. Dates include May 29-June 28.

Jamaica: These include six nights and Monday departure dates run from July 10- August 7

Vacation Express is owned by Sunwing Travel Group.Sunwing Airlines, Swift Air and Viva Aerobusoperatethe flights to and from Nashville to these resorts.

Advantages to anall-inclusivevacation:

No financial surprises. You pay on the front end for airfare, hotel, food and beverage and transportation to the resort, so you know exactly what your trip will cost.

The package pricing is definitely a bargain. Many of these packages could be cheaper than driving to the gulf coast for six nights.

It is quick and easy to get there. With these charters and direct flights, you can leave early on a weekendmorning and be on the beach by early afternoon.

Since everything is included, you can put your money and valuables in the safe and move around eating and drinking and taking part in resort activities with no worries about cash for yourself or your children or the people in your group. Even for people who do not drink alcohol, this arrangement can be a deal because you can order unlimited soft drinks, milk shakes, coffees, etc. on a whim all day and night, without spending an additional cent.

No schedule: Many of the resorts have some restaurants that require reservations, but they all have other options, including free room service at some, and restaurants where you could just show up at almost any time to eat. The ones I have visited have a wide variety of choices, and the food has been not exactly gourmet but mostly very good.

The security is generally good because the resorts want to keep out anyone but their guests who have paid.

These all-inclusives offer a great opportunity to be adventurous with the food because it is all included in your price. For example, if you ever wanted to try papaya juice or tapas or paella, or other exotic and different foods or drinks, this kind ofvacationis the perfect time to experiment.

Vacationtips

If you are going on anall inclusivevacation, here are some things to know:

You must have a valid passport to go to any of the Caribbean countries featured here. Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six months beyond the dates of your trip.

Don't choose the lowest price package unless you want to be at a resort with other people who pick the lowest end package. (You get my drift?) An extra $100 - $200 on the front end might bump you up to nicer accommodations (and maybe a classier crowd if that is what you want).

Know that your charter all-inclusive Sunday to Saturday trip does not give you an option of returning any time other than the next Saturday. If for some reason, you need to cut your trip short, you would need to fly with a commercial carrier at your additional expense.

Take everything you will need with you. The resort shops may have what you forgot in stock, but their prices probably will be crazy expensive. On our most recent trip myhusband went in search of mouthwash and ended up paying $15 for a small bottle of Listerine in the resort shop. An 8-ounce tube of Banana Boat 15 sunscreen was priced at $40. Yikes! I was glad I had packed plenty of sunblock.

If you want an all-inclusive trip, be sure that is what you book. There are some packages that do not include everything so be sure to double check.

It is probably not best to be on a diet when you go. Although there are plenty of fresh healthy options, the spreads of food, from the lavish breakfast buffet to a variety ofchoices at every other mealand any moment in between, is not conducive to a serious diet.

Do your homework before you book your trip. I would use a travel agent because it does not cost you any more than if you book it on your own, and a good agent knows the properties either personally or through the experiences of clients and colleagues. If you want a romantic getaway, one resort may be better than another, or if you want a family trip, or group reunion, another one might be better suited. Some resorts have better beaches than others, some have fabulous pools while others are more modest. Also most resorts have access (at an additional cost) to excursions, as well as golf, casinos, scuba diving, tennis etc. So check on those amenities if they are important to you.

I also would check TripAdvisor and the resort's website to see details on the property and any other information, such as whether it is family friendly or adult only, and details like tipping, whether currency needs to be exchanged and whether there is a dress code at the restaurants. I also would check weather reports for your planned dates because summer can be brutally hot in some of these places and not all of the common areas are air-conditioned, and of course there is a hurricane season to consider.

Once you are checked in, use the safe in your room. Put everything of value money, jewelry, passports, etc. in the safe and then no worries.

Talk to other guests at the resort when you first arrive to find out about best restaurants and quirky things that most of us don't figure out for a couple of days after we arrive. Plus you get to meet lots of interesting people from all over the world.

Take lots of $1 bills. The hardworking local workers at the resorts we have visited are so pleasant and are super appreciative of any tip.
