Two-Time Space Traveling Astronaut to Speak at Black History … – Patriots Point

Back to Blog Chris Hauff Feb 16, 2017

On Thursday, February 23, two-time space traveling astronaut Christopher Cassidy will board the USS Yorktown to discuss the life and accomplishments of S.C. hero Ron McNair during a Patriots Point Black History Month symposium titled In the Spirit of Ron McNair. The free program begins at 11 a.m. and is open to the public.

McNair was born and raised in Lake City, S.C. during the Civil Rights Movement. In 1984, after overcoming countless obstacles, he became the second African-American astronaut to travel to space. Just two years later, he was killed in the tragic space shuttle Challenger explosion.

In addition to learning about McNairs life from his younger brother Eric McNair, the audience, which will include several hundred fifth grade students, will also hear firsthand accounts from Christopher Cassidy about space travel. The current National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut has spent more than 182 days in space, has visited the International Space Station (ISS), and completed six spacewalks.

Christopher J. Cassidy (Captain, U.S. Navy) was selected by NASA in 2004 and is a veteran of two space flights, STS-127 and Expedition 35.

We are honored to have the opportunity to host a program about the extraordinary Ron McNair, said Patriots Point Executive Director Mac Burdette. McNair was raised during times of segregation in the South, and despite that, he was able to persevere to astronomical heights. His story, paired with the experiences of current NASA astronaut Christopher Cassidy, will make for a very inspiring program. There are very few people who can say theyve met an astronaut.

Respected Charleston musicians, Lonnie Hamilton and Ann Caldwell will perform the National Anthem. Hamilton will also perform a song at the conclusion of the symposium in tribute of Ron McNair one McNair had planned to play aboard the space shuttle Challenger before the launch took his life.

Admission and parking for In the Spirit of Ron McNair is free. The program, which will also be streamed live through the museums social media pages, is part of the ongoing Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things symposium series.

Don't miss out upcoming events and happenings at Patriots Point.

How the World Has Changed From 1917 to 2017 – Singularity Hub

Over the last 100 years, the world has changed tremendously.

For perspective, this year at Abundance 360, I gave a few fun examples of what the world looked like in 1917.

This blog is a look at what the world looked like a century ago and what it looks like today.

Lets dive in.

One hundred years ago, things looked a little bit different.

1. World Literacy Rates

- 1917: The world literacy rate was only 23 percent.

- Today: Depending on estimates, the world literacy rate today is 86.1 percent.

2. Travel Time

- 1917: It took 5 days to get from London to New York; 3.5 months to travel from London to Australia.

- Today: A nonstop flight gets you from London to New York in a little over 8 hours, and you can fly from London to Australia in about a day, with just one stop.

3. Average Price of a US House

- 1917: The average price of a U.S. house was $5,000. ($111,584.29 when adjusted for inflation).

- Today: As of 2010, the average price of a new home sold in the U.S. was $272,900.

4. The First Hamburger

- 1917: The hamburger bun was invented by a fry cook named Walter Anderson, who co-founded White Castle.

- Today: On average, Americans eat three hamburgers a week. That's a national total of nearly 50 billion burgers per year. And now were even inventing 100 percent plant-based beef burgers produced by Impossible Foods and available at select restaurants.

5. Average Price of a Car in the US

- 1917: The average price of a car in the US was $400 ($8,926.74 when adjusted for inflation)

- Today: The average car price in the US was $34,968 as of January 2017.

6. The First Boeing Aircraft

- 1917: A Boeing aircraft flew for the first time on June 15.

- Today: In 2015, there were almost 24,000 turboprop and regional aircraft, as well as wide body and narrow body jets, in service worldwide.

7. Coca-Cola

- 1917: On July 1, 1916, Coca-Cola introduced its current formula to the market.

- Today: Today, Coca-Cola has a market cap of about $178 billion with 2015 net operating revenues over $44 billion. Each day, over 1.9 billion servings of Coca-Cola drinks are enjoyed in more than 200 countries.

7. Average US Wages

- 1917: The average US hourly wage was 22 cents an hour ($4.90 per hour when adjusted for inflation)

- Today: The average US hourly wage is approximately $26 per hour.

8. Supermarkets

- 1917: The first "super" market, PigglyWiggly, opened on September 6, 1916 in Memphis, TN.

- Today: In 2015, there were 38,015 supermarkets, employing 3.4 million people and generating sales of about $650 billion.

9. Billionaires

- 1917: John D. Rockefeller became the world's first billionaire on September 29.

- Today: There are approximately 1,810 billionaires, and their aggregate net worth is $6.5 trillion.

For context, Rockefellers net worth in todays dollars would have been about $340 billion. Bill Gates, the worlds richest man, is worth $84 billion today.

10. Telephones (Landlines vs. Cellphones)

- 1917: Only 8 percent of homes had a landline telephone.

- Today: Forget landlines! In the US, nearly 80 percent of the population has a smartphone (a supercomputer in their pockets). Nearly half of all American households now use only cellphones rather than older landlines. And as far as cost, today, you can Skype anywhere in the world for free over a WiFi network.

11. Traffic (Horses to Cars)

- 1917: In 1912, traffic counts in New York showed more cars than horses for the first time.

- Today: There were approximately 253 million cars and trucks on US roads in 2015.

12. US Population

- 1917: The US population broke 100 million, and the global population reached 1.9 billion.

- Today: The US population is 320 million, and the global population broke 7.5 billion this year.

13. Inventions and Technology

- 1917: The major tech invention in 1917? The toggle light switch.

- Today: The major tech invention of today? CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology, which enables us to reprogram life as we know it. And we are making strides in AI, robotics, sensors, networks, synthetic biology, materials science, space exploration and more every day.

14. High School Graduation Rates

- 1917: Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

- Today: Over 80 percent of all Americans graduated high school this past year.

15. Cost of Bread

- 1917: A loaf of bread was $0.07 ($1.50 when adjusted for inflation).

- Today: A loaf of bread costs $2.37.

16. Speed Limits

- 1917: The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

- Today: The maximum speed limit in most cities is about 70 mph.

Just wait for the next 100 years.

Preparing for the Singularity – Inverse

The following is an excerpt from Technology vs. Humanity: The Coming Clash Between Man and Machine as published by Fast Future Publishing Ltd.

Dr. Ray Kurzweil, currently Googles Director of Engineering, is a great influence on futurist thinking in general and on my own work, but also someone whose views I must often challenge in this book. Kurzweil predicts that computers will surpass the processing power of a single human brain by 2025, and that a single computer may match the power of all human brains combined by 2050.

Kurzweil suggests these developments will herald the advent of the so-called Singularity, the moment when computers finally trump and then surpass human brains in computing power. This is the moment when human intelligence may become increasingly nonbiological, when it may be possible for machines to independently, and quite likely recursively, go beyond their original programminga decisive moment in human history.

Ray Kurzweil told his audience at Singularity University in late 2015:

As we evolve, we become closer to God. Evolution is a spiritual process. There is beauty and love and creativity and intelligence in the worldit all comes from the neocortex. So were going to expand the brains neocortex and become more godlike.

I also believe the point of computers having the capacity of the human brain is not far off, butGod or no Godunlike Dr. Kurzweil, I do not think we should willingly give up our humanness in return for the possibility of attaining unlimited nonbiological intelligence. That strikes me as a very bad bargain, a downgrade rather than an upgrade, and in this book I will explain why I passionately believe we should not go down that road.

Right now, in 2016, computers simply do not have the power to deliver on Kurzweils vision. I believe the chips are still too big, networks still do not have the speed, and the electricity grid by and large cannot support machines that would need this much power. Obviously, these are temporary hurdles: Every day we hear announcements of major scientific breakthroughs and, in addition, numerous unpublicized advances are certain to be happening in secret in labs around the world.

We need to be ready for the Singularity: open yet critical, scientific yet humanistic, adventurous and curious yet armed with precaution, and entrepreneurial yet collectively-minded.

Master icon painters share their unique craft at Holy Ascension – Moultrie News

World-renowned iconographers were in Mount Pleasant this week to teach a 10-day workshop on Icon Painting at Holy Ascension Church in I'On. Anton and Ekaterina Daineko were here teaching the course and painting daily with a class of 10 students who traveled from around the country to participate under their tutelage.

Over the course of the class, the students completed a gilded icon of St. Nicholas.

The two artists are a married couple from Minsk, Belarus. Last summer they hosted a class in Vermont that Mount Pleasant resident and Holy Ascension parishioner Dee Rhodes attended, and she extended an invitation for the couple to travel to Charleston to present their class here.

Their journey to becoming Master Iconographers was intense and competitive. While studying at the same State Academy of Art, the couple did not even meet until a trip to Moscow. Anton was already seen as a virtuoso and one of the best drawing students, working with a stipend from the president. They discovered common interests, which included iconography, and their relationship grew, eventually getting married in 1999 and forming a close working partnership.

They have worked together for 20 years, the first 10 in the icon studio at the newly built St. Elizabeth Convent in Minsk, the last 10 years on their own.

The fall of the Soviet Union left a huge empty desert, making it difficult to find books or material on iconography, though icons could still be found in museums. And while the artistic passion came naturally, the skill was perfected over hours and days and months of practice.

Ekaterina said, "I am honored to be teaching in such an authentic orthodox place as Holy Ascension."

A sampling of the works of master iconographer Anton Daineko.

And while 10 full days of study is rigorous, it is essential to show participants each and every step as thoroughly as possible.

"It's essentially an initial overview and why each step is necessary,"Ekaterina said.

"Anton and Ekaterina come to teach iconography (the painting of Holy Images) at Holy Ascension to continue the living tradition of the Christian belief in the Incarnation that God became man, took flesh, and come to save the world," said Father John Parker, of Holy Ascension."In John 3:16, that famous verse, we remember, 'for God so loved the world, that He gave his only-begotten Son, so that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish, but have eternal life.' When St. John says 'world', he could have said, 'ecumene,' meaning the inhabitants - people of the world. But he said instead, 'God so loved the kosmos' - the whole created universe, that He sent His Son. The incarnation of God in the flesh - the birth and life of Jesus - is the supreme act of God to save all of creation," he said.

"The Icon is one portion of that act. First it is an image of Jesus, who, according to the Bible, is 'the image of the invisible God.' But the act of making an icon redeems fallen creation: trees from the fallen world are made into a board. Gauze made from plants is glued with rabbit-skin glue to that board and covered with plaster ground from stones. Paints are made by grinding stone into pigments, and mixed with egg yolks for egg-tempera. And the image is painted from dark to light, to show the saving of the world from darkness by Jesus, the light of the world."

It takes a minimum of a month to create the icon board, which is considered an art in and of itself. They are handmade and any flaw can ruin an icon.

The ancient technology of grinding the stone and mineral and adding egg yolk as a mediumfor color is a preservation technique that will allow the icon to last for several hundred years. It takes several months to complete the icon.

It is an intricate process that brings forth the faith of the Orthodox religion through this traditional art form. And as Jonathan Pageau of the Orthodox Arts Journal wrote in July 2016 about the couple, "their imagery remains firmly grounded in iconographic principles and canon."

"It is hard to express. You cannot describe the art in words and what you are feeling when you are doing it because words are not enough,"Ekaterina said. "The image of God is one's own vision."

However, with an Icon there are limitations because they are used with the purpose of Orthodox worship. There is a responsibility to create with meaningful purpose and spiritual reverence.

With an Icon there are limitations because they are used with the purpose of Orthodox worship. There is a responsibility to create with meaningful purpose and spiritual reverence.

Some ask: Arent icons idols? Father Parker responded this way, "Christian worship is, from Isaiah 6 and Revelation 4, through early church history, and to the present day, a participation in the eternal worship of God in Heaven.

"From the very early centuries, churches were adorned with frescos and panel icons depicting Jesus, his mother, and the saints to give visual word to that reality described in the letter to the Hebrews, 'since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us run, therefore, the race set before us.' Anton and Ekaterina teach an ancient art that contributes directly to the beauty of the worship of God, a portion of heaven that we experience on Earth."

"One of the gifts that God has given to us at Holy Ascension, is an array of very talented artists and craftsmen - those who have designed and built and adorned our church to be a meeting of heaven and Earth. This master class was an opportunity to share that gift."

Visit the Dainekos'website, ikona-skiniya.com to learn more about them and their work. For more information on future workshops, contact Dee Rhodes at deerhodes@me.com.

New Vampire: The Masquerade and Mage: The Ascension games show White Wolf, World of Darkness are officially out … – VG247

Thursday, 16 February 2017 22:56 GMT By Brenna Hillier

Two new World of Darkness games out right now within a month of Werewolf: The Apocalypses announce? Every 90s kid RPG nerd in the building is getting misty-eyed.

Vampire: The Masquerade is a brand legendary among video games for classic, broken Troika RPG Bloodlines, but for those whose hobbies include tabletop gaming its only the tip of the iceberg.

World of Darkness, the huge family of pen-and-paper RPGS to which Vampire: The Masquerade belongs, is back in action all of sudden and a bunch of us nerds are falling over ourselves in excitement as a result.

Todays update is the release of two new World of Darkness games. Vampire: Prelude (thats its app name; the full title its Vampire The Masquerade: We Eat Blood and All Our Friends Are Dead) and Mage the Ascension: Refuge are both described as interactive fiction, and are presented in messaging format, suggesting World of Darkness has fully embraced the modern technological era.

You can buy these two games individually on both Google Play and the App Store, or grab them bundled as World of Darkness Preludes: Vampire and Mage on Steam. You can do it right now.

The two new releases follow on from the announcement of Werewolf: The Apocalypse, a game which seems to be as much about punching nazis as anything else, after more than a decade without a single World of Darkness video game release.

This is presumably all thanks to Paradox Interactives acquisition of World of Darkness studio White Wolf after CCP gave up on its eight year attempt to build a World of Darkness MMO.

Its all really happening, pals. World of Darkness video games are coming out. Before you know it well be painting our fingernails black again.

Former Ascension schools teacher pleads guilty to sexual contact … – The Advocate

GONZALES A former East Ascension High assistant athletic trainer and health teacher has pleaded guilty to prohibited sexual conduct with a 17-year-old female student last year, part of a plea agreement that allowed him to avoid jail time.

Louis Carl Aguillard, 34, 39340 Hunter's Trace, Prairieville, received on Monday a suspended six-month jail sentence with six months probation, during which he cannot teach or coach, his plea agreement says.

Aguillard must also pay a $1,000 fine and give 100 hours of community service.

Tyler Cavalier, spokesman for the 23rd Judicial District Attorney's Office, said the victim did not want to testify at trial, which was set to start Wednesday morning in Gonzales.

"We feel that based on the circumstances surrounding the case, with the victim not wanting to testify, we had the best possible outcome," Cavalier said Wednesday.

He noted the suspended prison sentence and fine were the maximum allowed by the charge to which Aguillard pleaded, which was prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student.

Aguillard, who was an assistant trainer for all of the Gonzales high schools youth sports programs, had worked at East Ascension High since 2014 but stopped working there some time before his arrest May 25, school officials said.

After a weeklong investigation, Aguillard turned himself in to police May 25, the same day that students finished school for the year. Police said at the time thata teacher had reported concerns to a faculty member who shared those concerns with police.

Prosecutors later charged Aguillard with felony malfeasance in office and the misdemeanor count to which he ended up pleading Monday at the Parish Courthouse Annex in Gonzales.

The felony malfeasance count was dropped as part of his plea Monday before Judge Thomas Kliebert Jr. of the 23rd Judicial District Court, online minutes say.

Online records show Aguillard's license to teach has been expired since August. Under state law and licensing rules, the conviction would have been grounds for suspending or revoking his license, a state education official said.

Aguillard's attorney, J. Rodney Messina, did not return a message for comment left Tuesday evening. Assistant District Attorney Shawn Bush prosecuted the case.

WAC Wednesday: CSUB’s ascension, iconic songs and more – Mid-Major Madness

This feels so strange it might as well be a Tuesday. Or a Thursday.

For the first time in the (storied?) history of WAC Wednesday, New Mexico State is not batting leadoff. That spot belongs to Cal State Bakersfield, which snapped the Aggies 20-game winning streak, and shed nationwide light on what WAC followers have known all year.

The Roadrunners are good.

Their suffocating defense was on display against NMSU, as they limited the leagues most efficient offense to a season-worst 0.75 points per possession. Much of this was due to constant pressure on the perimeter from Dedrick Basile, Jaylin Airington and Brent Wrapp.

Damiyne Durham was on display too.

His 13 first half points created separation that CSUB would never relinquish. If youre looking for the type of combustible, streaky shooter that could carry a team in March, hes it. The talented sophomore takes 43.0 percent of his teams shots when hes on the floor, the highest rate in the country.

The win also might have had some program-building significance. Last years WAC Tournament thriller aside, the Roadrunners had never beaten NMSU in 12 all-time regular season meetings.

We havent scored the ball well against them. Weve always been able to defend them pretty well, but we havent scored well enough to win games like we did tonight, Rod Barnes said in a release after the game.

The Roadrunners avoided a letdown and took care of business against UTRGV, behind Durham (17 points) and Matt Smith (13 points, 10 rebounds), who scored in double figures for the sixth straight game. Coupled with NMSUs loss in Phoenix, CSUB moved into sole possession of first place at 8-1.

With that, we get our first non-NMSU Twitter embed of the season. Youve earned it, CSUB.

On to the power rankings:

Last week, we talked about NMSUs perimeter depth. Ready for a 180?

The Aggies have a talented four-man perimeter rotation, along with three other players that have seen time this year. But their potential depth took a major hit when the team announced that Sidy NDir - who was the teams leading scorer when he was injured in December - would not return this year.

Paul Weir thinks the team may be taxed.

Paul Weir says on his postgame radio interview that the players might be tired and that he may have pushed them too hard with the new style.

NMSU is playing faster this year than it did the last few seasons under Marvin Menzies, and has used the press frequently. The tired theory certainly seemed to fit as GCU went on a late 19-0 run (more on that below) to finish off the Aggies on Saturday. It was almost jarring to see the bottom fall out after NMSU had come out of the half slicing the Lopes on the interior to build a 10-point lead.

Braxton Huggins may be especially feeling the effects of a big uptick in minutes. Hes averaged just 7.8 points over the past six games, while shooting 8-for-37 (21.6%) from three.

The good news for NMSU?

The eight team league means that the Aggies play just four games from now until March 4.

How do you sum up GCUs whiplash finish against NMSU?

"Unbelievable," GCU head coach Dan Majerle [said in a release]. "We came out in the second half and there was a point they were shooting 81 percent from the floor. I mean they went on a run, they went up 10 and we had to find a way to get tougher. We did that.

The Lopes 19-0 late second half run dealt the Aggies their second consecutive loss.

Defensively, the entire team seemed to pitch in, whether it was a Dewayne Russell steal, Darrion Clarks rebounding, Gerard Martin taking a charge or Oscar Frayer playing tough man defense on Ian Baker. The Aggies also simply just missed some open shots, which may speak to some tired legs.

The win must be a great late season treat in the final year GCU wont make the trip to Las Vegas. But there may be a bigger prize in play.

Winning out, with a little help, would see the 6-3 Lopes tied atop the league. This wont be easy, as theyd need to sweep their next two games on the Northwest swing, and then win a seriously difficult game in Bakersfield to close the season.

The scenario also requires CSUB to drop a non-GCU game, and for NMSU to lose again too. For what its worth, kenpom.com projects both teams to finish at 12-2, just out of the Lopes grasp.

In a season full of twists, UMKC is trending upward at the right time.

Were just trying to get into a groove going into the conference tournament to end the year. Its the best time to get rolling, LaVell Boyd said after Roos beat UVU last week.

UMKC got off to its best start since 2001-02 at 6-2, but then fell into a valley. Martez Harrison was removed from the program, and the Roos endured a 1-8 stretch that included no Div. I wins in the month of December.

Yet theyve come out the other end. Theyre above .500 and have won four-straight games, punctuated by a 30-point win against Seattle last Saturday that pushed their league record to 6-4. If the WAC has a middle tier below CSUB/NMSU/GCU, the Roos have set themselves apart.

Kareem Richardson and his staff appear to be pushing all the right buttons.

Kyle Steward is playing the best basketball of his career and has blossomed into a consistent scoring threat alongside Boyd. Fellow seniors Dashawn King, Darnell Tillman, Broderick Newbill and Broderick Robinson are all playing quality minutes. And the youth has developed too, with freshman Xavier Bishop playing good defense and taking some of the playmaking burden off of Boyd.

Last week the claim was made that UVU had never produced an NBA player. Courtesy of UMKCs great play-by-play announcer Steven Davis, this was wrong: current Phoenix Sun Ronnie Price is a proud UVU alum and hall of famer. And hes had an impressive NBA career to boot, which is now going on 11 seasons.

CSU Bakersfield at Utah Valley | Feb. 16, 9:00 PM ET | UVU TV

Calling the Wolverines an enigma might be lazy, but thats where were going. Theyve run the spectrum this season from puzzling losses (CSU at home), to valiant defeats (NMSU at home) to thrilling wins (at BYU). Isaac Neilson can be a force down low and if the three-pointers fall, they can beat anyone in the league. Is this a trap for CSUB?

Though the Grammys are in the rear view mirror, were still feeling musical. Heres hoping this list doesnt disappoint like James Hetfields microphone.

A Revolution in the Science of Psychedelics is Happening in Boulder – 303 Magazine

No longer is the psychedelic revolution represented by tie dye shirts and free loving spirits. Psychedelic activism has been on the minds of many people since its boom in the 1960s; however, now more than ever, people are stepping up and really studying the possibilities that these drugs may actually be used as medicines. This can most notably be seen with the growing acceptance of medical marijuana in our culture. That being said, it is going to be a lot more difficult for the public to understand psychedelics medicinal role.

The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) is a non-profit research and group that both advocate and do research on psychedelic substances and their potential to be used in psychotherapy. The work being done by MAPS has inspired groups all over the country to join in on the fight for psychedelics and they have worked very closely with some of the groups in the Denver and Boulder Area.Founded in 1986, the organization has come a substantially long way in its research and they are now working with several different human studies to look at the effective combination of psychedelic drugs and psychotherapy. NowMAPS has psychotherapy assisted studies with medical marijuana, LSD, Ibogaine, Ayuascha and MDMA.The major medical applications for these substances include helping treat illnesses like PTSD, cluster headaches, severe anxiety and depression.

PBS recently released a news piece entitled, Why psychedelic drugs are having a medical renaissance. The piece examines the recent work being done between psychedelics and psychotherapy to help treat extreme anxiety and PTSD. One study examined in the article found people with sever anxiety or depression were 60 to 80 percent felt better immediately after the experience and for as long as six months after.

So with all of this new research being done, who are the psychedelic activist in our community? Organizations like Medicinal Mindfulness and Psychedelic Club both take on similar missions as MAPS and work tirelessly for the avocation and possible regulation of psychedelic medicines. The goal isto break the stigma that has been placed around these substances and open engaging conversations about their safe use. Medicinal Mindfulness is very active within the Boulder community and holds many different workshops and events.

Dennis McKenna speaking at the Psychedelic Shine event in Boulder on Feb, 2017.

One of the most interesting of these workshops isa community breath work event called Conscious Cannabis Circles. Not only are they helping spread accurate information to the community, but they are also working within the community to facilitate actual psychedelic experiences. Using a combination of cannabis satvia, some skillful breath work, the correct set and setting, and the help of their cannabis facilitators, Medicinal Mindfulness cites that it can create a Dmt-like experience for participants who sign up for their Conscious Cannabis events. Everything is completely legal under Colorados state laws and this not only can be done at their community events, but also at your own personal home at request.

Not only do they facilitate these actual psychedelic experiences, but Medicinal Mindfulness also hosts a huge informational conference on psychedelics. Co-hosted by Psychedelic Club, the extremely informational event was called Psychedelic Shine, a live speaker event that took place on February 12, 2017. The all-day event included live music, art vendors, psychedelic book vendors, anda lecture by legendary psychedelic activist Dennis Mckenna. The night ended with a powerful live community breathwork session. The conference as a whole was an awesome display of great information being spread to an interested and engaged crowd of nearly 500 people.

Prior to the event, 303 had the opportunity to speak with Daniel McQueen, the Executive Director of Medicinal Mindfulness and a psychedelic cannabis facilitator in Boulder. Speaking on why he chose Boulder as a home base for his organization, McQueen said, I got my degree fromNaropa Universityso thats why I moved here. But Colorado in general is awesome, its legal with retail cannabis, so Colorado [is]a great place for us to do our work.

Speaking bit more on the subject of Cannabis, McQueen was quick to acknowledge the subtle gap between cannabis culture and psychedelic culture. Bridging that gap from the recreational cannabis user, to the person who uses cannabis for psychedelic purposes is a huge in shifting the community perception. McQueen believes people have deep healing experiences on cannabis and is working tirelessly to help introduce this idea to the Boulder community. He cites the recent legalization of cannabis has a catalyst for opening up peoples minds to other possibilities with cannabis and helping bridge the gap towards other psychedelic medicines. Since starting Psychedelics Shine and promoting local psychedelic culture, the community has grown immensely over the years and is continuing to spread.

Founder of Medicinal Mindfulness, Daniel McQueen, speaking at the Psychedelic Shine in Boulder.

The Psychedelic Club of Denverwas founded in July of 2016 but has been a national organization for much longer than that. The Denver chapter is a growing group of activists within the 303 area, but there is also an even larger branch in Boulder. Speaking with a few of the founders of the Psychedelic club of Denver, they all agreed events like Psychedelic Shinewill help aid in Psychedelic clubs ultimate mission. Founder Tyler Williams explained their mission, stating it is to to raise awareness about the truth of psychedelics as well as create a safe space for everyone to integrate their experiences. A couple specific goals would be to create criminal justice reform, creating a community around the discussion of psychedelics, and spreading more info on harm reduction.

This event was a fantastic example of the scholarly event that can characterize this new psychedelic revolution. Instead of raving hippies dancing about and screaming of revolution, these are scientists and intellectuals working on the due diligence required to help bring about lastingchange. With all of this new information being foundand more people than ever actually doing research with these medicines, the time may be closer than ever for a true psychedelic revolution.

The momentum is on the side of the activist, its now up to science to continue on helping prove that these substances are not only safe to use, but also can be a great aid in helping fight a number of emotional and psychological ailments.

Psychologist and psychedelic explorer James Fadiman will discuss New Paradigms and New Tools for the Mind at the Feb. 27 Mind & Supermind lecture presented by SBCC Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL).

Fadiman will talk about new ways in which the mind can be expanded through different interpretations of the human psyche and current studies using micro-dosing psychedelic substances.

Fadimans work has been referenced in national and international press including The New York Times, NPR, UK, Rolling Stone, Marie Claire, Associated Press, Inc., and The New Yorker. The CLL Mind & Supermind series has been one of our most popular community events for 35 years, said Andy Harper, CLL executive director.

We look forward to Dr. Fadimans lecture to expand our students awareness and knowledge of psychedelic research and transpersonal psychology, he said. Fadiman will explore two emerging understandings. The first displaces the old single-self assumption and suggests a healthy personality is actually composed of multiple selves. The second displaces the idea that effects of psychedelics can be disturbing and overwhelming.

The approach of using micro-doses allows researchers to discover unanticipated beneficial uses of psychedelics including healing depression, anxiety and menstrual pain, as well as enhancing learning and creativity. Fadiman did his undergraduate work at Harvard University and his graduate work at Stanford, doing research with the Harvard Group, the West Coast Research Group in Menlo Park, and Ken Kesey.

A former president of the Institute of Noetic Sciences and a professor of psychology, he teaches at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (now Sofia University), which he helped found in 1975. He is the author of several books and textbooks.

Trucker Tools integration with MercuryGate TMS allows users to send locations of pickups and deliveries to Trucker Tools Load Track application for advanced geofencing capabilities.

Trucker Tools, provider of the popular smartphone app used byowner operators and small carrier drivers with a built-in Load Track connectivity platform, announced an integration with MercuryGates Transportation Management Software (TMS), a cloud-based solution.

The company says the integration brings end-to-end automation to the shipment lifecycle for the carriers, freight brokers, freight forwarders, third party logistics providers (3PLs) and shippers using MercuryGate TMS.

In addition to reporting GPS locations while shipments are in transit, the fully integrated Load Track solution adds instant driver messaging, arrival and departure notifications and near real-time ETA status to the native user interface and workflows of MercuryGate TMS.

The automation of check calls with drivers improves productivity and the accurate, timely shipment status information helps companies further increase customer service and satisfaction, said Prasad Gollapalli, chief executive officer of Trucker Tools.

More than 400,000 drivers, owner operators and small carriers have already downloaded the Trucker Tools app with the Load Track feature.

When load assignments are made in MercuryGate TMS, the automated shipment tracking process begins up to 24 hours in advance of the pickup appointment to ensure drivers are committed and on schedule. As part of the process, the assigned drivers are provided a text link on their phones to download the Trucker Tools app if they havent downloaded it previously.

Additionally, the MercuryGate TMS automatically sends locations of pickups and deliveries to Load Track to utilize its advanced geo-fencing capabilities that provide real-time arrival and departure notifications and shipment status updates.

Load Track continuously updates shipment locations in MercuryGate TMS every five minutes when installed on Android devices and up to 15 minutes with Apple devices through the final delivery.

Trucker Tools gives the most accurate and time-sensitive tracking that I have seen in the marketplace, and its customer support gives 100 percent to resolve any problems and grow the product, said John Back, senior logistics manager of Amstan Logistics, a Load Track and MercuryGate TMS user based in Hamilton, Ohio.

Political Correctness Propagates Radical Liberalism and Undermines The Truth – Accuracy In Media (blog)

Political correctness advances liberal ideologyit is a weapon wielded by radicals to cow conservatives into submission. And the doctrines of political correctness undermine the truth.

According to liberal illogic, individuals who oppose the slaughter of unborn infants obstruct womens rights and reproductive justice.

Intolerant/homophobic individuals who adhere to biblical teachings on gender and sexuality face the wrath of the loving and tolerant LGBTQ lobby.

Americans who believe that government should enforce immigration laws and secure the nations borders are branded as anti-immigrant, xenophobic bigots.

And despite the never-ending stream of Islamic terrorist attacks at home and abroad, those who warn about the potential dangers of Islamic immigration are derided as Islamaphobic.

Notice the theme? Political correctness combats the truth by condemning conservative views and advancing liberal ideology.

Is it anti-immigrant and xenophobic to advocate for the government to secure its borders or to guard against Islamic terrorists? Is it a breach of civil rights to oppose the modern abortion holocaust or to denounce all forms of sexual immorality? No, but holding to any of those views represents a departure from the doctrines of political correctness, and thus, a challenge to liberal ideology.

Until the nation is radically transformed, leftist protestors will likely continue to agitate and unleash their ever-ready arsenal of attacks against those who deviate from the dogma of political correctness. But conservative Americans must refuse to acquiescethey must stand up for the truth:

Amidst a cacophony of politically correct propaganda conservative Americans must counter the lefts radical ideology by speaking the truth.

This Day: Charlton Heston speaks at Harvard about Political Correctness – The Apopka Voice

On this day in 1999 Charlton Heston gave a speech on the topic Winning the Cultural War at the Harvard Law School Forum.

Here is an excerpt:

Ive come to understand that a cultural war is raging across our land, in which, with Orwellian fervor, certain accepted thoughts and speech are mandated.

For example, I marched for civil rights with Dr. King in 1963 and long before Hollywood found it acceptable, I may say. But when I told an audience last year that white pride is just as valid as black pride or red pride or anyone elses pride, they called me a racist.

Ive worked with brilliantly talented homosexuals all my life throughout my whole career. But when I told an audience that gay rights should extend no further than your rights or my rights, I was called a homophobe.

I served in World War II against the Axis powers. But during a speech, when I drew an analogy between singling out the innocent Jews and singling out innocent gun owners, I was called an anti-Semite.

Everyone I know knows I would never raise a closed fist against my country. But when I asked an audience to oppose this cultural persecution Im talking about, I was compared to Timothy McVeigh.

From Time magazine to friends and colleagues, theyre essentially saying, Chuck, how dare you speak your mind like that. You are using language not authorized for public consumption.

But I am not afraid. If Americans believed in political correctness, wed still be King Georges boys subjects bound to the British crown.
