What is NC Cooperative Extension?

We are more than cows and corn.

NC Cooperative Extension is Randolphs Countys link to the two land-grant universities in North Carolina (NC State and NC A&T). Land-grant universities have three parts to their mission: education, research and extension. NC Cooperative Extension extends research-based knowledge to all North Carolinians, helping them transform science into everyday solutions that improve their lives and grow our state.

Why Cooperative Extension?

Essential to extensions mission to grow the state is our collaboration with the US Department of Agricultures National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA), NC State University, NC A&T State University and local (county) governments across the state. This strategic partnership and cooperation are why it is called Cooperative Extension.

Statewide, our funding is 14% federal, 36% state, 25% county and 25% other (grants, contracts donations etc). It is truly a cooperative effort to offer our services to North Carolina residents.

History of success: Then and now

In 1909, information was shared through a Boys Corn Club (the beginnings of 4-H) in Ashokie, NC, that adding nutrients to your cornfield by spreading manure could increase the corn yield. A young boy took that information when the average yield was 18 bushels per acre and increased his yield to 196 bushels per acre in two years. NC Cooperative Extension is still researching ways to increase farm productivity as the worlds population increases and with its demand for food.

Currently, agriculture is North Carolinas largest industry, generating $91.8 billion annually while employing roughly 17 percent of the states workforce. Ours is the third most diverse agriculture economy in the country, with more than 80 commercial crops and a large animal agriculture presence.

Another example from the early 1900s happened through Girls Canning Clubs. Young girls were taught food preservation. These girls sold their canned food in the wintertime to earn money. NC Cooperative Extension is still teaching life skills that build capacity in people. n 2019, 47,041 North Carolina consumers increased their knowledge of safe home food handling, preservation or preparation practices.

The Randolph County Center is fully staffed and offers services in all the NC Cooperative Extension program areas.

Adam Lawing is the Livestock Agent. Did you know that Randolph County has more beef cows and goats than any other county in North Carolina? Adam is a great resource for our Randolph County producers.

Blake Szilvay is the Field Crops/Forestry Agent. Blake helps producers identify pests and diseases in crops. He is a licensed drone pilot and uses that technology to help farmers. Blake has also brought forestry programming back to Randolph County to help woodland owners improve management practices. Over 50% of Randolph County is forested, and in 2016, those forested acres provided $4.6 million through harvests.

Ben Grandon is the Horticulture Agent. In 2019, Ben conducted 226 on-site consultations with homeowners. He helps with gardening questions, landscaping and lawn issues, and many more. Ben also leads the Randolph County Master Gardener Volunteer educational group. After Bens training, a Master Gardener Volunteer can provide research-based information about gardening and environmental stewardship to individuals. This years Master Gardener Training Course begins in April.

Jeannie Leonard is the Family and Consumer Sciences Agent. Jeannie can teach food preservation and cooking skills. Recently, her Cooking Under Pressure (Instant Pot) classes have been popular. Her next class is on March 26. Jeannie also works with Randolph County businesses and organizations when they want to offer their employees wellness programs. Jeannie provides training on healthy recipes and cooking tips on location or here at the office.

Allison Walker is the 4-H Agent. Allison is passionate about Randolph County youth. Currently, she is working with 60+ classrooms on the Embryology Project. Allison provides 1 dozen eggs and incubators to each classroom so the teachers can teach the provided embryology curriculum. The second graders learn firsthand about chick development and get to see the chicks emerge from their shells. 4-H is a great youth development program open to all youth, not just farm kids.

Jody Terry is the 4-H Program Assistant. Jody spends many days in afterschool programming. She helps children through character education, healthy lifestyle choices or STEM education. She is gearing up for Bike Safety Week where she helps teach bike safety to the fourth graders. Jody has worked with thousands of children in Randolph County through the years and still remains committed and passionate about 4-H programming for the children.

Trance (2020 film) – Wikipedia

2020 Indian Malayalam language film directed by Anwar Rasheed

Trance is a 2020 Indian Malayalam-language psychological drama film directed and produced by Anwar Rasheed and written by Vincent Vadakkan. It features Fahadh Faasil in the lead role, while Nazriya Nazim, Soubin Shahir, Vinayakan, Chemban Vinod Jose, Dileesh Pothan and Gautham Menon play supporting roles. Amal Neerad was the cinematographer and newcomer Jackson Vijayan composed the film's songs, the background score was by Vijayan and Sushin Shyam.

Filming began in July 2017 and was completed in September 2019. Trance was released in Kerala on 20 February 2020.[2]

The plot follows the life events of Viju Prasad, a Kanyakumari-based wannabe motivational speaker and someone who has psychological problems. He is hired by Solomon and Issac for their corporate body to work as a Christian pastor and is given six months training in the gimmicks by Avarachan. He is introduced as Joshua Carlton and he successfully captures devotion of masses by being a good entertainer. Both Solomon and Issac make millions of dollars and their enterprise grew across countries with more than 300 major centers. However, things start to fall apart when Joshua agrees for an interview with Mathews. Joshua's mental health also begins to deteriorate. Both Solomon and Issac sees this and tries to eliminate him. Joshua as an endgame tries to publicize the truth through Mathews. The truth is publicized and Joshua gets acquitted from his crimes due to his mental health. In the end, he goes to meet Esther, an ex-employee of his organized ministerial show, and someone who he has grown close during his ministry tours and mental health crisis.

In a March 2016 interview, Fahadh Faasil revealed that he would be acting in Anwar Rasheed's next directorial and its subject is fresh that has never been attempted in Malayalam cinema.[3][4] Trance was officially announced with a title poster in June 2017.[5] The film was produced by Rasheed himself. The film marks the debut of Vincent Vadakkan as screenwriter. Rasheed was earlier supposed to direct a short in 5 Sundarikal (2013) based on the screenplay by Vadakkan. But it did not work out as he did not got the right cast. Later, Vadakkan narrated the story of Trance, but then he was not ready to produce the film because of its high production cost. Rasheed had Fahadh in mind for the lead role then itself. Later, Fahadh happened to hear the story from Vadakkan and insisted Rasheed to reconsider the project. By then, the storyline had changed and bankability of Fahadh had also grown and Rasheed was confident in producing the film.[6]

Filming began in July 2017.[7] A week-long first schedule of filming was completed in December 2017 in Mumbai.[8] For the first time in Malayalam cinema, Bolt High Speed Cinebot cameras were used to shoot some scenes in the film.[9] The film is shot with sync sound. The film was shot mainly in coastal Kanyakumari, across various locations in India and Dubai, and the climax was shot in Amsterdam. In July 2019, it as reported that Trance is expected to cost close to 20 crore when it completes production.[10] Amal Neerad was the cinematographer and Resul Pookutty was the film's sound designer.[11][12] Filming was completed on 1 September 2019.[13] The film was made on a budget of 35 crore.[1]

Music is composed, arranged and produced by Jackson Vijayan, while the background score of the movie is set by Sushin Shyam and Jackson Vijayan.[14] The soundtrack album also consists of a title track composed and Arranged by Vinayakan TK.[15]

The film's release was postponed multiple times. It was initially scheduled to be released on 22 March 2019.[17] Then there were plans to release the film during Eid al-Fitr (June) but was later shifted to Onam (September) due to pending visual effects work.[10] Release date was again scheduled for 20 December 2019 before postponing to February 2020 due to delay in post-production work.[18] Then it was scheduled to 14 February 2020 on Valentine's Day.[19] But the regional Central Board of Film Certification in Thiruvananthapuram referred the film to a revising committee in Mumbai since Rasheed was not willing to cut a 17-minute long sequence that could hurt religious sentiments.[20] On 15 February 2020, the film was leaked on the website Tamil Rockers a week ahead of its release.[21] The film was released in Kerala on 20 February 2020.[21]

Goutham V. S. of The Indian Express rated 3.5 in 5 and said: "The abstract style of filmmaking, and the narrative structure that visualises the complex layers of the protagonists psyche is bound to make Trance a trendsetter in the Malayalam film industry ... Fahadh steals the limelight by portraying a character that is hysteric and disturbing at the same time". He also praised the "vivid visualisation, colour tones and the brilliant use of sounds" and cinematography and background score.[22] Critic from Sify also rated 3.5 in 5, describing the film "bold and thrilling", writing "Trance is a genuine and brave attempt that is gripping from start to finish ... Anwar has packaged the movie deliciously, adding lots of emotions, in an honest way. With top notch visuals, music and sound the viewer is in for a grand experience ... But in a way, this film belongs to Fahadh Faasil, who is absolutely brilliant".[23] Prem Udayabhanu from Malayala Manorama gave 3.5 in 5, stating that "it is psychedelic and vibrant, flamboyant and gripping ... Trance is magical, hysterical and depressing and you need to transcend the mundane line of cinematic offerings to relish it". He praised the sound design, background score and cinematography.[24]

Rating 3.5 out of 5, Sajin Shrijith of The New Indian Express said: "If you are into films with a slightly eccentric touch, you may find yourself overwhelmed by the overall audio-visual experience ... Anwar Rasheed, cinematographer Amal Neerad, editor Praveen Prabhakar, and composers Sushin Shyam-Jackson Vijayan keep us hooked by delivering a film that feels part-dream, part-nightmare. However, post-interval, you begin to sense Trance losing some of the potency established in the first half".[25] Cris from The News Minute also gave 3.5 out of 5 stars and wrote that "Fahadh delivers a great performance ... Anwar's filmmaking keeps you engaged the entire first half during which a captivating story begins to unfold. The last half does not keep up to the first, scenes that you enjoyed earlier becoming stretched, almost like you took a pill yourself and everything seems to take too long. But it doesn't let you down, with some excellent performances coming from a very promising cast".[26]

Sanjith Sidhardhan of The Times of India awarded 3.5 out of 5 stars and stated: "Fahadh as a subdued Viju and the flamboyant Joshua is the maniacal energy that drives the film ... Director Anwar gets the first half absolutely right in its pacing and content. However, the second half of the script, by Vincent Vadakkan, loses steam with the plot then almost reflecting Joshua's mindset in those scenes. The makers seem to have chosen style over substance in the latter half". He praised the cinematography and background score.[27] Rating 2.5 in 5, Nirmal Jovial from The Week wrote that "Trance is definitely a bold attempt for its theme, as far as Malayalam cinema is concerned. But it fails to do justice to the theme it explores with its weak script that becomes so cluttered and confused towards the third act", but praised the cinematography.[28]

S. R. Praveen of The Hindu called it "a half-baked attempt", stating "the first half of the film, which captures this transformation is gripping, owing much to Fahadh's performance, ... The film attains its high by the interval point, almost having the viewer in a trance ... Unfortunately, from there, the script goes downhill. One gets to see the writer taking the easy way out at crucial points, bumping off-key characters in a tame manner and depending on the usual television newsbreaks to untangle tricky situations".[29] Critic Veeyen states that "Trance does address a theme that is radically important and proffers a compelling investigation into the unexplored realms of religion, faith and belief." But he adds that .."its also a movie that eventually gets choked by the mistiness that pervades its plot and design, and ends up a pale shadow of the head turner flick that it should have been.[30]

Nifra Offers the Progressive Trance Music Her Homeland Loves – SF Weekly

Bearing in mind that Czechoslovakia was under Soviet rule until 1989, and Slovakia only gained independence in 1993 separating from the now Czech Republic in what was dubbed the Velvet Divorce, its not surprising that the nation has been playing musical catch-up a little bit. Consider the restricted access to Western art prior to 89, and its amazing how quickly things have developed, particularly regarding electronic music.

But develop they have. Theres a Slovakian scene that includes celebrated producer Jimmy P, trance DJ Driftmoon, and eclectic artist FVLCRVM. Add Nifra to that growing list. The woman born as Nikoleta Frajkorova was 16 when she started to create music.

At that time I discovered the DAW [Digital Audio Workstation] Fruity Loops, and I could totally get lost in it and completely forget about the time trying to figure out the software and how to actually make a track, Nifra says. I had no internet so it was all by intuition. It all started as a hobby, or a better way to say it: obsession. I think to succeed in the music industry you have to be completely obsessed with what you are doing and that has to come naturally.

From that point on, all Nifra wanted to do was make music. Obsession is the right word her art occupied all of her time as she remained remarkably focused.

There was nothing else that caught my interest more than the world of DJs, nightclubs, events, she says. I love making my own music and to be on stage, I feel home there. So from the get-go I knew I will never give up chasing this dream and Im glad I didnt because after a couple of years, things started to change for real.

Nifras sound is best described as progressive trance music pulsating and energetic, but also hypnotic and entrancing. Back home in Slovakia, she says, the people love trance.

I havent been living in my home country all together for 10 years, I think, but I do play there two to three times a year, she says. They love trance music! I have a huge following there and the crowd is always wild on the shows, so whenever I have a gig there I know its going to be worth it. You wouldnt believe it but the most successful producers from Slovakia are all trance-oriented like Reorder or Driftmoon.

Nifra has released a number of tracks and remixes up to now, mainly on Markus Schulzs Coldharbour label but also via Armada. July 2019 saw the release of her own debut CD, Follow Me. It was, she says, her biggest project so far. That studio work translates to a great show when shes out on tour.

I mean you could look at it this way touring is the result of the hours you spend in studio producing your tracks, because without it you cant make it as an international touring artist, she says. When it comes to the actual show prep, its always good to have some kind of an idea what crowd Im going to play for and selecting tracks that could be potentially dropped. And sometimes, you just change things up and play it by ear depends on the vibe.

Its working. Nifras buzz is among the loudest in the trance world, and the lush vibes at her shows are practically tangible. After a decade in the game, she knows how to hold a crowd in the palm of her hand how to select the right tracks and create the perfect atmosphere.

When you are doing this for so long, in my case for over 10 years since the very, very beginning, you just keep on going and not looking back, she says. But when I do look back the evolution has been quite significant. I used to be a very shy girl in my teenage years and thats not the best quality for a performing artist. Ha! But traveling around the world and playing countless clubs and festivals made me super confident in what I do and also as a person. I want to be as good at my craft as I can be and to make a difference for women in the trance genre. Last year, she was nominated in the International Dance Music Awards (IDMA) in the category Best Female Trance Artist for the first time, and she was nominated this year as well.

Nifra continues to make huge strides for female DJs and producers in the electronic music world, which can still be full of misogyny. In terms of her work, her gender is largely irrelevant shes simply a great artist. See for yourself at Audio this week.

I love the States, she says. Ive been a regular visitor since 2014 and Ive done an insane amount of shows there. I have a nice history with the San Francisco Bay Area especially, because I played Audio in 2016 as a support act on Markus Schulzs Watch the World tour, and people could also see me at POP NYE in 2016 at Oracle Arena, Ruby Skye, and The Midway last year as well.

Nifra says that shell be dropping new tunes at Audio some that have been released and others that were only recently finished. After that shell be finishing her North American tour, then returning home to finish her debut album. 2020, she says, will be big. Of that we have no doubt.

Nifra with Gene Xander and Jonny Atom, at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, Mar. 19 at Audio.

I keep on running, running from the pain, I keep on running, running from the shame, I keep on running.

Although the lyrics are sparse, they are remarkably effective in capturing the mood.

Runningopens the EP and sets the tone with a dark and moody feel set to an insistent beat.

Colyn provides plenty of space in the mix this is vitally important to allow for the building of tension and to allow the songs to travel on a journey.

A lot of dance/trance music fails in this respect because it is shackled to a constant, and sometimes persistently annoying, beat necessary for the disco floor.

However, Colyns expertly creates and releases tension, giving the songs a life.

I prefer the uncut version ofRunningto the shorter mix because of the additional length we get more time to immerse ourselves in the experience.

Behind the greatest showman with Isaac Lomman – PerthNow

Theres two sides to the charismatic Isaac Lomman the entertainer and the helper.

This is the mesmerising hypnotist in full showman mode, and its the side most of Adelaide is used to seeing, with his eight years at Fringe, plus corporate shows and events.

But its the more casual Isaac whos chatting with Watch today. He cant quite resist the cocked eyebrow for much of our shoot. Its rather ingrained in fact he tells us hes teaching his two daughters Willow, 6, and Elodie, 3 the hypnotist eyebrow.

Hes also taught them a little hypnosis to help them if they have trouble sleeping, perhaps scared of the dark. Getting the pair to close their eyes and imagine a fairy, focusing and visualising and feeling all the positive feelings which come with that, means theyll go to sleep with the comfort of this little guardian fairy.

It was this helping of people that first attracted Isaac to the art of hypnosis. Hed been working in sales and marketing, and was overlooked for a promotion. Hed also developed a keen interest in neuro-linguistic programming, closely related to hypnotism. Isaac undertook courses and discovered he had quite the ability and talent to easily take people to a deep trance and help them deal with all manner of phobias and pain.

Returning to Adelaide, he opened an office to help people quit smoking, hitting the stage to promote that office, quickly falling in love with the theatrics of stage hypnosis.

I was so passionate about helping people, its only really the last year or so Ive reconnected with that passion and desire, Isaac says.

That was always my original intention, but then it was sort of subverted. Dont get me wrong, I love doing the Adelaide Fringe. When I look back over the last 10 years flying around the world and doing, some shows with 1500 people and on cruise ships, those are really great things.

But having someones family daughter coming up and saying you helped my dad quit smoking and because he quit smoking, he could get dentures which changed their whole family. Those are the moments I started thinking about and I know its what I need to get back to.

Once the craziness of this years Fringe winds up, Isaacs looking forward to getting right back into helping people and further developing his techniques such as hypnosis in childbirth.

Hypnobirthing is the trademarked name Isaac terms his technique comfortable childbirth, for an approach that teaches the practice of relaxation as well as breathing and mindfulness techniques to make the experience calmer and more pleasant for both mother and baby.

Its been popular with plenty of famous faces actresses Jessica Alba and Angelina Jolie are said to be fans of the method.

Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge also revealed she not only used hypnobirthing throughout all three of her labours, but also to overcome the crippling effects of her intense morning sickness, hyperemesis gravidarium.

Isaacs own wife Danni employed it during the birth of their second daughter, in a trance the whole time, leaving hospital an hour or two after the complication-free birth. Hes also worked with a good friend, helping her achieve her desires of a pain-free delivery.

My approach is not necessarily affirmations or relaxation, Isaac explains. Im going for anaesthesia in hypnosis while in labour. We change a lot of the societal suggestions that women get over their whole life. Thats the starting point and actually, if you want to, and you tap into this state of mind you can have a far more painless, or a completely free-of-pain experience.

He also employs some self-hypnosis prior to his own performances. I go into a bit of a trance and I review what Im doing this for, he says. My mantra is Im going to give these people an experience they will never forget.

Its also important to Isaac for him to leave a sense of positivity in clients or his on stage subjects. A couple of things were instilled in me early, such as never waste a trance, he says. Always leave people feeling better than when they came to you. But beyond that part of my character and mission is having people feeling better about everything.

I like people to see the show and have their mind-blown, but also the other side that theres more to our reality and then the people on stage are feeling good about it and they can recognise it as a skill rather than something that makes them silly or gullible.

So, no, fans of the talented showman neednt fear hell retire completely from the stage he really does love doing the shows too much.

Theres no danger of it going away, Isaac shares. The great thing is I chose this career with the idea I can do stage shows til Im 70. Its about getting a balance with helping people. Its given me more energy and focus during Fringe. In the past few years it has been a bit plug and play, the same kind of stuff which was OK.

Now Im ready to try new stuff, doing street hypnosis, giving more experiences. Its been really good and its all come from reconnecting with the original purpose of hypnotherapy.

Overcoming winter’s alienation (The alienation of winter) High Country News Know the West – High Country News

Before I ever experienced winter, I wanted to love it. As a child in India, I watched Home Alone repeatedly, entranced by the images of the season: people sledding, gifts under a tree, crackling fireplaces. Just the idea of snow something Id never seen was wondrous.

When I turned 10, we moved to Canada, and I finally got to experience winter. Unfortunately, it wasnt quite what Id imagined. Snow was beautiful, yes, but painful to touch, even using the cheap gloves wed bought at Walmart. Our electric fireplace stopped working after the first couple of winters, and we couldnt afford to get it fixed.

On weekends and holidays, my friends disappeared for skiing or snowboarding lessons. I didnt bother asking my parents if I could do the same: I knew there was no money for the lessons, let alone the ski passes, skis, goggles or any of the other items Id need for the slopes.

So I ended up staying inside most winters, watching TV, sinking into the couch and into a dull depression. This type of alienated winter hibernation, I think is unfortunately common for immigrants in North America. Our families generally earn less, making it harder for us to afford the lessons, passes and equipment required for most winter sports. And in a season that can be particularly challenging for those affected by depression, people of color who are the majority of Americas immigrants are also less likely to access appropriate mental health care.

Over time, I grew to resent winter, the white landscape making me, in my brown skin, feel more out of place than I did in any other season.

But one year, I experienced the healing effect of wintertime in the mountains. Unexpectedly, snowshoeing then and now has helped me to not only survive this time of year, but also to learn to value its quiet grandeur.

ONE BRIGHT FEBRUARY MORNINGwhen I was 14, my father and I set off for Kananaskis Country, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, two hours from Calgary. Our rented snowshoes were in the backseat. His colleagues, who had organized the outing, were waiting for us at the start of the 9-mile Pocaterra Trail. We struggled with the unfamiliar gear, and they helped us then and throughout the day, every time we stumbled or when my new Camelbak started leaking. We must have slowed them down, but they didnt seem to mind. I remember one woman, who kept closing her eyes and tilting her face to the sun, her chest rising as she swallowed the white-cold air. The same air turned my nose beet-red and fogged up my glasses. I tugged my hat lower over my frizzy hair, wishing I could disappear.

My father picked up the motions quickly, drawing on athletic instincts from playing cricket in India. But I could barely lift my leaden legs to put one snowshoe in front of the other. Within minutes, I was wheezing from the altitude and exertion. About an hour into the trail, the others traversed the side of a hill, extending their arms to maintain their balance on the slope. I followed their example but fell, tumbling onto the hard-packed snow. Slowly, my legs now damp, I struggled to my feet. By the time I maneuvered across the slope, no humans were in sight. There was, however, a very large, very dark moose.

We stared at each other, his breath rising in great, steamy huffs. Mine remained trapped in my throat. After some seconds, he looked away, dipping antlers as large as swan wings towards the few blades of grass poking through the snow. He chewed on the frozen grass in a leisurely way, his neck and flank bulging sleekly with muscle. He could have pulverized me.

Yet I was not scared. A kind of dreamy peace settled over me, as if Id slipped into a trance, lulled by the sounds of his chewing and the contrast between his dark powerful body and the still white slopes.

Eventually, he raised his head to look at me again, a long look that I took to be full of meaning. Then he trotted off, disappearing into the pine trees. I dont know how long Id been standing there when I saw my father and his friends coming back, faces creased with worry. I didnt tell them about the moose. I didnt want to worry them, and I wanted to keep the moment for myself, like a dream that would dissolve as soon as I tried to grasp at it.

IN THE FALL OF 2016,just as I turned 29, I got a job in Colorado. As the leaves fell and the days shortened, the familiar dread swelled in my chest, heavy and gray as the winter sky. I felt both lethargic and anxious, trapped in the city, a man-made landscape of squat buildings, neon shop signs and slick walkways. Why leave the house? Soon, I was back in the winter routine I knew best: on the couch every night for hours, watching characters on TV exercise, socialize and live in ways that felt impossible for me.

Luckily, the season, as much as I hated it, was not a monolith. There were reprieves: warm mornings when I stood outside, watching the frost melt, savoring the sun on my face. How long had it been since I felt alive since I remembered that the world around me was alive?

Maybe, I thought, snowshoeing could help me regain that feeling, even when the skies turned steely once more.

Unfortunately, I still lacked a car or enough local friends to easily hitch a ride into the mountains. But Google led me to the Colorado Mountain Club. Soon, Id arranged a ride to a snowshoeing trip.

Equipped with old-fashioned wooden snowshoes and gaiters borrowed from a colleague, I joined a group of about a dozen people to snowshoe the Lost Lake trail, an hour and a half west of Denver. The sky was powder-blue, and our group, who ranged in age from their 20s to their 70s, chatted easily, stopping often to sharing their trail mix and Gatorade and to wait for slower members.

I was the only foreigner and woman of color, but I did not feel conspicuous. Unlike ski slopes, which require significantly greater financial resources, snowshoeing seemed more equitable: Whether your snowshoes cost $100 or $20 didnt really matter. It didnt require lessons or even much practice to master. For once, not being from here and not growing up wealthy did not feel like major disadvantages.

Ascending to the top, I marveled at how deep the snow was, how it shimmered on tree branches. And the silence there seemed a special quality to it: snow muffling sound, animals alive but unmoving, deep in hibernation. I could hear myself breathe; I never heard that in the city, never even thought to listen.

At the top was Lost Lake, huge and pale blue. Surrounded by alpine peaks and spruce groves, it would be beautiful in any season. But now, in deep winter, we could step onto its frozen surface. Underneath the thick sheet of ice, water and fish moved silently. Another world beneath this one: It seemed like a miracle.

Now, I snowshoe regularly in wintertime. Sometimes, Im reluctant to go, especially when the sky has been gray for days and the urge to stay in bed and block out the world becomes overwhelming. Sometimes, even when I do go, the slow, hard trek in the bleak cold feels absurd. But every time, theres something that feels wondrous, even if briefly, something thats only possible in that season, at that moment: sunlight streaming butter-yellow through snow-covered woods, a bird darting out of a tree, breaking the stillness.

Last time, I even saw moose tracks.

Unlike electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), NeuroStar TMS is a non-drug, non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain that are underactive in depression.4,5 Since receiving FDA clearance in 2008 as a safe and effective treatment for adult patients with MDD, NeuroStar has become a trailblazer in the treatment of depression and is the number one TMS choice of doctors. Now with over 2.5 million NeuroStar treatments delivered and over 1,000 devices installed across the U.S., NeuroStar is available in nearly every state.

These milestones indicate that doctors continue to trust NeuroStar as the number one TMS choice in the country and, as a result, more men and women with depression are getting access to this non-drug treatment that has the potential to be life-changing, said Dan Guthrie, Chief Commercial Officer of Neuronetics, Inc. We are so proud of how far weve come over the last decade, but we know theres still work to do. We remain committed to transforming lives and ensuring that as many people as possible not only know about NeuroStar as a treatment option, but also have access to it.

After struggling with depression for nearly 20 years, and finding no relief with antidepressants, my doctor and I decided on NeuroStar as my next step, and it changed my life, said Cara Scruggs, a licensed professional counselor and NeuroStar patient advocate. From my experience as both a patient and a behavioral healthcare professional, I know how important it is to have access to clinically proven treatment options thatcan bea catalyst to recovery. Accessto NeuroStar TMS made a major positive impact on my life, and Im grateful that, with these exciting milestones, even more individuals will have an opportunity to experience thisprovensolution for themselves.*

The NeuroStar systems cutting-edge technology offers doctors real-time feedback and delivers precise and accurate targeting that provides reliable and consistent treatment. In an open-label clinical trial, 58 percent of patients significantly responded to treatment and 37 percent achieved complete remission of their depression symptoms with NeuroStar.6 Treatment sessions can be performed in as little as 19 minutes** patients have the flexibility to fit it within their busy lives, and doctors can see more patients, allowing them to provide NeuroStar TMS to a growing patient population.

US$2.68: That’s What Analysts Think Greenbrook TMS Inc. Is Worth After Its Latest Results – Yahoo Finance

There's been a major selloff in Greenbrook TMS Inc. (TSE:GTMS) shares in the week since it released its annual report, with the stock down 25% to CA$1.80. Overall the results were a little better than analysts were expecting, with revenues beating forecasts by 3.4%to hit US$36m. Following the result, analysts have updated their earnings model, and it would be good to know whether they think there's been a strong change in the company's prospects, or if it's business as usual. Readers will be glad to know we've aggregated the latest statutory forecasts to see whether analysts have changed their mind on Greenbrook TMS after the latest results.

View our latest analysis for Greenbrook TMS

TSX:GTMS Past and Future Earnings, March 13th 2020

Taking into account the latest results, the current consensus from Greenbrook TMS's four analysts is for revenues of US$56.9m in 2020, which would reflect a sizeable 59% increase on its sales over the past 12 months. Prior to the latest earnings, analysts were forecasting revenues of US$58.1m in 2020, and did not provide an EPS estimate. The consensus seems a bit less optimistic overall, with the revenue forecasts following the latest results.

Intriguingly, analysts have cut their price target 5.3% to US$2.68 showing a clear decline in sentiment around Greenbrook TMS's valuation. The consensus price target just an average of individual analyst targets, so - considering that the price target changed, it would be handy to see how wide the range of underlying estimates is. There are some variant perceptions on Greenbrook TMS, with the most bullish analyst valuing it at US$3.09 and the most bearish at US$2.18 per share. As you can see, analysts are not all in agreement on the stock's future, but the range of estimates is still reasonably narrow, which could suggest that the outcome is not totally unpredictable.

Zooming out to look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up both against past performance, and against industry growth estimates. Analysts are definitely expecting Greenbrook TMS's growth to accelerate, with the forecast 59% growth ranking favourably alongside historical growth of 45% per annum over the past three years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in a similar industry are forecast to grow their revenue at 10% per year. It seems obvious that, while the growth outlook is brighter than the recent past, analysts also expect Greenbrook TMS to grow faster than the wider market.

The most important thing to take away from these updates is that analysts are definitely optimistic on the business, given that they've begun forecasting positive per-share earnings for next year. Regrettably, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, but the latest forecasts still imply the business will grow faster than the wider market. Analysts also downgraded their price target, suggesting that the latest news has led analysts to become more pessimistic about the intrinsic value of the business.

We have estimates for Greenbrook TMS from its four analysts , and you can see them free on our platform here.

Another thing to consider is whether management and directors have been buying or selling stock recently. We provide an overview of all open market stock trades for the last twelve months on our platform, here.

Why Did You Move Your Hand Just Now? Linking Free Will and Movement – The Great Courses Daily News

ByPeter M. Vishton, Ph.D.,William & MaryEdited by Kate Findley, The Great Courses DailyActivity increases in the brains left or right motor cortex just before muscle movement begins in the body and before a person is aware of a decision to move. Photo by Liderina / ShutterstockFree Will and Movement: The Surprising Connection

When it comes to the connection between free will and movement, you would think that your physical actions are always preceded by a conscious decision. But did you know that we can tell how people are going to move before they do so?

Indeed, its possible to know how theyre going to move even a few hundred milliseconds in advance. If you think about moving your left hand, even if you dont actually move it, your right motor cortex activates a bit.

Studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have suggested that, for some decisions, the lag time can be several seconds. In this type of study, you lay in the fMRI scanner and look at pictures of faces, pondering whether each face looks trustworthy or not.

As youre pondering, activity begins increasing in either your left or right motor cortex, the one that will cause the right or left hand to press the button. At some point, this activity becomes great enough that it causes a movement of your hand.

But well before your hand movesin fact, several seconds before youre even aware that youve made the decisionthe person running the fMRI scanner can accurately predict the choice that youll make.

Some recent studies by neuroscientist Alvaro Pascual-Leone have taken this investigation into movement and free will much further. He used a technique called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

TMS sends a jolt of electromagnetic energy through the skull to the cortex and causes a burst of activity. If that burst is sent to the correct spot in the motor cortex, for instance, its possible to make your arm twitch.

If I stimulate a spot in the right motor cortex, the left hand twitches, Dr. Vishton said. For a corresponding jolt in the left motor cortex, the right hand will twitch. Our sensory and motor systems all have this crossover or contralateral organization.

Pascual-Leone asked his participants to watch a screen, and when they received a cue, to decide whether they would twitch their left or right hand. They werent supposed to move right away, just decide how they would move a few seconds later.

After a delay of a few seconds, a second cue was delivered, at which point the participant made the movement they had decided to make.

For many of the trials, Pascual-Leone didnt do anything but record these activations. Participants would get the first cue, and they would decide to move one hand or the other. Then the second cue would occur, and the participant would move.

In some trials of this experiment, Pascual-Leone would deliver a TMS jolt to the motor cortex that the participant had chosen to move. The participant would move but rarely notice that they had.

The experimenters were causing the hand movement by stimulating the motor cortex, but the participants were about to do that same thing themselves anyway.

For a few key trials in this experiment, however, when the signal to move was given, Pascual-Leone would deliver a jolt to the motor cortex that the participant had not selected. This caused the wrong hand to move.

Now, if our conscious experience of decisions is in control, this should feel strangereally strange. Youve decided to do one thing, but your body has been hijacked and made to do something else.

The strangest thing about the results of this study is that the participants didnt even seem to notice that their brains had been hijacked.

Most participants had a very simple description of the experience. When asked why they moved their left hand, when their brain activity made it seem like they were going to move their right hand, most participants gave a nonchalant answer: I just changed my mind.

In this experimental situation, its clear that the experimenternot the participants free willis in control of the movement. The surprising result here is that participants dont feel strange when they dont have conscious control of their own movements.

These experimenters argue that this is because we arent typically in control of those movements, even when we arent hooked up to a TMS stimulator in this type of experiment. The results of these studies by Pascual-Leone and others suggest that it doesnt feel unusualindeed, that it isnt unusualfor our conscious mind to not be in control of our actions.

Think about this the next time you reach for a bag of chips or a pint of ice cream.

Dr. Peter M. Vishton is Associate Professor of Psychology at William & Mary. He earned his Ph.D. in Psychology and Cognitive Science from Cornell University. Before joining the faculty of William & Mary, he taught at Northwestern University and served as the program director for developmental and learning sciences at the National Science Foundation.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX Shiny Pokemon: where to find and how to catch shinies – RPG Site

A new introduction to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is Shiny Pokemon. Although this has been a staple feature of Pokemon games for a while now, they werent present in the original Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team games. The new Nintendo Switch DX versionfixes that though!

For the uninitiated, Shiny Pokemon are basically the same as regular Pokemon except - just like getting a shiny in a packet of trading cards - they have a slightly unique coloring. This can be relatively subtle like a slightly different shade, or particularly striking, like the infamous Red Gyarados. Most of the shinies in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX are on the more outlandish side - which is a good thing.

Shiny Pokemon can randomly appear as Strong Foes in the dungeons, which means that when you see a yellow triangle on the map or above a Pokemons head, you should really go for it. Remember, to recruit any Pokemon you need to make sure your leader deals the last hit.

Not every Pokemon in the game has a Shiny variation though. There are a total of 27 Shiny Pokemon in the game. Here are the Shiny Pokemon and where you can expect to find them, followed by our tips for how to best catch a shiny.

There are a few things you can do to give yourself as high a chance as possible to catch Shiny Pokemon. The first two come from Rare Qualities. The qualities Friendly and Squad Up both give you a higher chance of recruiting Pokemon. Friendly always applies, but Squad Up increases the chances depending on how many Pokemon you have with you in the Dungeon. Weve got a full list of Rare Qualities in Mystery Dungeon DXshould you need it.

The Friend Bow is a very important item to have when trying to get Shiny Pokemon. Itll increase the chance of recruiting both normal and Shiny Pokemon and all you need to do is make sure your leader has it equipped. We also have a page on where to find the Friend Bow which you'll defintiely find helpful.

The TM False Swipe will also be helpful in recruiting Pokemon. This move will increase the chances of recruiting Pokemon if this is the move used to knock them out. Giving this to your leader will be a big help. Sadly this isn't one of the TMs you can get for free through the use of a Wonder Mail Code, but several other useful TMs can be gained that way.

Basically, if youre a Pokemon wearing a Friend Bow, with the Rare Quality Friendly, whilst also making sure to use the False Swipe TM, youre going to have the absolute best chance at recruiting any Shiny Pokemon you come across.
