Starting with good fundamentals is important for playing any musical instrument and having to unlearn bad habits is exceptionally frustrating, especially for kids. If your child is interested in playing guitar, I have a few suggestions based on both personal experience and expert opinions: 1) Don't get him or her a guitar until 6 years of age. Prior to age 6, 99.9% of kids don't have enough finger and hand strength to make much progress. 2) Get a decent electric guitar first for children under 10 years of age, because it will be MUCH easier to play. Most people get their children an acoustic guitar, and then the child gets frustrated, can't do it, and he or she quits because a lot practice time for many months is required to become proficient on an inexpensive acoustic guitar ...
