OAKLEY -- Joe Mixon scored four touchdowns in the first half as the host Freedom High football team overwhelmed 11th-seeded Berkeley 63-7 on Saturday night in the first round of the North Coast Section playoffs.

Quarterback Dante Mayes threw for two touchdowns and ran for two touchdowns in the first half as the Falcons (9-2) won their eighth straight game.

With the win, sixth-seeded Freedom (9-2) advances to the quarterfinals next Saturday against No. 3 James Logan in Union City.

"They're obviously a tough opponent," Mayes said of James Logan, "but we're going to prepare and get ready and just do what we can."

Late in the first quarter, Mayes scored on a 53-yard run to give Freedom a 21-0 lead. The Falcons then scored touchdowns on all five of their possessions in the second quarter.

Mixon scored three touchdowns in the second quarter, including one on an 80-yard pass from Mayes. Freedom receiver Darrell Daniels had five catches for 103 yards and a touchdown in the first half.

Mixon finished with five touchdowns and ran for 160 yards on 16 carries.

The lone first half score for Berkeley (5-5), the West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division champs, came on a 77-yard touchdown pass from Lamont Smith to Xavier Nelson with 2:50 left in the second quarter.
