Astronauts Dock With Space Station After Historic SpaceX Launch – The New York Times

The Crew Dragon has arrived.

On Saturday, SpaceX, the rocket company founded by Elon Musk, launched a Falcon 9 rocket with a Crew Dragon capsule carrying two NASA astronauts on top. SpaceX is now the first private business to accomplish a feat taking people to orbit that had until now only been done by nations.

Less than a day later, the spacecraft docked at the International Space Station, successfully completing the first leg of its journey.

This Crew Dragon test flight is a shakedown cruise to certify that the spacecraft meets NASAs needs and safety standards in order to start routine trips taking astronauts to and from the space station. The agency has relied on Russia for that task since the space shuttles were retired in 2011. Once astronauts begin using the capsule with regularity, space tourists could also begin to fly it in the years to come.

At 1:22 p.m. Eastern time, the two astronauts, Robert L. Behnken and Douglas G. Hurley, disembarked the Crew Dragon, exchanging handshakes and hugs with the three astronauts already on the space station.

Welcome to the International Space Station," Christopher Cassidy, the NASA astronaut who is current commander of the space station, said to Mr. Behnken and Mr. Hurley. Please come aboard.

In a welcoming ceremony, Jim Bridenstine, the NASA administrator addressed the astronauts from NASAs Johnson Space Center in Houston, where space station operations are managed.

I will tell you the whole world saw this mission, and we are so, so proud of everything you have done for our country, and in fact, to inspire the world, Mr. Bridenstine said. He then asked the astronauts if they had managed to get any sleep during the 19-hour trip.

We did get probably a good seven hours or so opportunity for sleep. Mr. Behnken replied. And I did succeed at sleep.

The current mission will not be a complete success until Mr. Behnken and Mr. Hurley return to Earth in the Crew Dragon. which they have named Endeavour, the same name as the retired space shuttle that both men flew on and the British sailing ship commanded by James Cook as he explored the Pacific.

This has gone as well as we could have expected it to go, Mr. Bridenstine said during a news conference after the docking.

Mr. Bridenstine and other officials including President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have offered the successful launch as a hopeful inspiration to serve as a contrast to riots that have followed the death of George Floyd, a black man in Minnesota who died after a policeman kneed on his neck.

But Mr. Bridenstine agreed that while the SpaceX mission might bring people together, it is not by itself a solution to social unrest.

If the expectation was that things on the ground were going to change because we launched a rocket, I think maybe the expectation might have been a little high, he said.

For now, Mr. Behnken and Mr. Hurley have an open-ended stay in orbit. The Crew Dragon test flight was originally scheduled to last only a couple of weeks, enabling the astronauts to test out capabilities of the capsule including serving as a shelter in case of an emergency.

But there have been delays in completing work on the spacecraft, as well as another that NASA is depending on for astronaut transportation, Boeings Starliner capsule. As a result, the space station is currently short-staffed with only three astronauts aboard Mr. Cassidy and two Russians, Ivan Vagner and Anatoly Ivanishin limiting how much scientific research can be conducted.

Mr. Behnken and Mr. Hurley can also assist with refurbishment tasks like spacewalks to install new lithium ion batteries that just arrived in a Japanese cargo ship.

The Crew Dragon is currently certified for up to four months in space. The spacecrafts solar panels gradually decay over time, and the worry is that if it is docked too long, the panels would not be able to generate enough power for a safe re-entry to Earths atmosphere.

But over the next few weeks, the astronauts will periodically turn on the Crew Dragon and check. If the solar arrays turn out to be more resilient than predicted, the mission could be extended beyond four months.

During the welcome ceremony, Brian Babin, a Republican congressman whose district includes the Johnson Space Center, asked how this flight compared with the astronauts earlier trips to space aboard the space shuttles.

Mr. Behnken said that while the shuttles offered a rougher ride getting off the launchpad, the ascent became smoother. But Dragon was huffing and puffing all the way into orbit, he said. A little bit more alive is probably the best way I would describe it.

Once in orbit, the spacecraft appeared to smoothly pass all of its tests. Today, the Dragon is extremely healthy, said Steve Stich, deputy manager of NASAs commercial crew program. Theres really no major problems.

During Sundays docking, the approach of the Crew Dragon proceeded smoothly, about 15 minutes ahead of schedule, with a camera on the space station capturing the red, green and white lights of the capsule as it steadily crept up over the course of a couple of hours. The astronauts took over manual control for a while, firing the thrusters to nudge the position of the spacecraft. They then turned control back to a computer on board for the final steps, leading to docking at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time.

Mr. Behnken and Mr. Hurley then had to wait close to three hours more as air pressure was equalized between their capsule and the station, tests verified no air leaks and the spacecraft was plugged into the outposts power systems.

As you are performing your inventory please collect all your food and water bottle trash, Anna Menon, a SpaceX mission controller in Hawthorne, Calif., reminded Mr. Behnken and Mr. Hurley before they exited their spacecraft.

If no major problems arise during this test flight, NASA will use data from this flight to certify that the Crew Dragon is ready for routine flights to the space station. The next Crew Dragon mission and the first operational one is to carry four astronauts: three from NASA and one from the Japanese space agency.

But Mr. Behnken and Mr. Hurley got there first.

We were just the lucky guys who got to fly the rocket yesterday, Mr. Hurley said.

Ahead of tomorrow's flight the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with Crew Dragon spacecraft sits on the launch pad at Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Almost 40 years have passed since the last time NASA astronauts blasted off into space on a brand new spaceship.

Now, as NASA looks forward to Wednesday's planned test flight of the SpaceX Crew Dragon with a pair of astronauts on board, some in the spaceflight community have a little bit of dj vu.

The first space shuttle, Columbia, flew on April 12, 1981. Crowds gathered in Florida to watch this strange new spacecraft. It looked more like an airplane than the familiar bell-shaped capsules of the Apollo moon missions.

Wayne Hale's wife woke him up for the shuttle launch and he watched it on television in his bedroom, where he'd been trying to get a little sleep after working a prelaunch shift at Houston's Mission Control. He'd just come to NASA a few years before, and he says that a lot about that time was not so different from now.

"The substantially similar thing is that we've been waiting too long without being able to send Americans into orbit from America," says Hale, who went on to be a flight director for dozens of shuttle missions and head of the shuttle program.

Almost six years went by between the last flight of an Apollo spacecraft and the first space shuttle launch. "I remember a lot of talk about, 'Well, we should never be in the position as a nation again of not being able to send astronauts into space for this long,' " Hale says.

This time around, though, NASA has been waiting even longer almost nine years.

NASA retired its space shuttles in 2011. Since then, it has been paying for seats on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft to get its astronauts to the International Space Station. That means American astronauts have been launching from Kazakhstan.

Meanwhile, the space agency has been partnering with companies such as SpaceX and Boeing to help them build their own space vehicles. The idea was that NASA would focus on more ambitious missions like a return to the lunar surface, while letting space companies basically operate a taxi service to the nearby station.

One of them the SpaceX Crew Dragon is finally ready to blast off with people on board. And some in the space industry think this historic launch marks the start of a revolution for space travel.

That's because folks outside of NASA will be able to fly on these space taxis, too, if they can afford the fare, opening up space as a more accessible travel destination. Already there's talk of Tom Cruise riding a SpaceX capsule to the station to shoot an action movie.

Here again, history is repeating itself. Hale says the reusable space shuttle was supposed to transform space travel in a similar way.

"We were going to take Walter Cronkite. My goodness, we were going to have journalists in space. We were going to take entertainers," he recalls. "We were going to take John Denver into space."

All of that ended with the Challenger disaster and the deaths of all on board, including teacher Christa McAuliffe. The shuttle was more dangerous and more expensive than originally planned, and it flew far less often than NASA had hoped. The agency had to shelve its vision of bringing up lots of ordinary people.

"Let's hope that this new generation of spacecraft really work out to be safe enough where we really can do that," says Hale.

The safety of SpaceX's capsule and rocket is better understood than the shuttle was at its start. SpaceX had a successful test flight to the station and back with no people on board except after it had docked to the station, when astronauts on board the outpost opened the hatch and went inside.

The company also checked out the safety system for astronauts by deliberately destroying one of its rockets and checking to ensure that the capsule escaped without harm.

Nothing like that was true for the space shuttle. NASA had never launched anything like it before sending it up with two astronauts: veteran John Young and rookie Robert Crippen.

On Wednesday afternoon at 4:33 p.m. EDT, from the very same launch pad, the SpaceX vehicle is scheduled to carry up another pair of astronauts: Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnken.

"It's probably a dream of every test pilot school student to have the opportunity to fly on a brand-new spaceship and I'm lucky enough to get that opportunity," says Behnken.

Hurley says that during their time in the astronaut corps, they both had an opportunity to interact with the first space shuttle flyers. He recently saw Crippen at an event in Texas a few years ago, and they talked about that first shuttle launch.

"I think one thing that really registered with me with what Bob Crippen said was, you know, 'We were so focused on flying the mission, flying the vehicle, and executing and not making a mistake,' " says Hurley.

That's the kind of intense focus Hurley has to have, even in the midst of a pandemic that has NASA begging people not to gather in crowds to watch as they've done in the past for the shuttle.

Both Behnken and Hurley have flown on the space shuttle in fact, Hurley was on its last mission. The shuttle had a cockpit crammed full of switches and dials, but the more modern SpaceX capsule is controlled with a sleek touchscreen.

"Growing up as a pilot, my whole career, having a certain way to control a vehicle," says Hurley. "This is certainly different."

And when the duo returns to Earth, they'll splash down in the ocean rather than coasting to a stop on a landing strip.

They will, however, be carrying some familiar cargo: an American flag. It flew on the first shuttle mission and the last. It has been hanging at the space station for years, just waiting for a crew to launch from the U.S. and bring it back home.

SpaceX launch: SpaceX vision goes well beyond space station – KTRK-TV

HOUSTON, Texas -- If all goes to plan, two U.S. astronauts will float into the International Space Station on Thursday afternoon from a U.S. rocket for the first time in nine years. When they get there, they'll find an American flag left there by the last space shuttle crew in July 2011.

Atlantis commander Chris Ferguson said at the time about the flag, "It represents a goal. [The flag is] to be returned to Earth once again by an astronaut that launches from a U.S. vehicle, hopefully in a few short years."

With a successful launch Wednesday, SpaceX astronauts will win the race to capture the flag beating Boeing - its competitor in the U.S. commercial space race. It's a big win for SpaceX, the private company that built the rocket, but not the prize SpaceX has been eyeing.

More than a decade ago, in June 2009, Elon Musk stood with ABC13's Ted Oberg outside what was then just a cargo capsule still being designed to fly freeze dried food and supplies to the space station.

He was three years away from his company's first successful cargo flight with the space station for the first time, but Musk was already looking ahead.

"You make no secret about the fact that this is not taking freeze dried food to the space station for its life, you want people in this soon?," Oberg asked Musk as he looked over the Dragon capsule.

"Absolutely," Musk confidently answered. "The whole purpose of me starting SpaceX from the beginning has been human space flight. We've designed the Falcon Nine rocket and our Dragon spacecraft to be human-rated from day one."

WATCH: See Ted Oberg's behind the scenes tour of SpaceX's early days from CEO Elon Musk

It is the tradition of American space exploration from its earliest days.

At Rice University in September 1962, President John F. Kennedy launched America's Space Race, telling Americans, "We do these things, not because they are easy but because they are hard." Nine years later, a man was on the moon.

America hasn't been back since, but in 2011, when the final space shuttle came to a stop, Commander Chris Ferguson said from the flight deck, "One thing is indisputable, America is not going to stop exploring."

WATCH: Ted Oberg's coverage of the final shuttle launch from July 2011

At the time, Mayor Annise Parker predicted, "hurt in Houston" until manned space flight begins again.

Which likely makes the 20-year old International Space Station, just 220 miles above Earth far from the final goal for SpaceX or NASA.

SpaceX is just 18 years old. It's smaller and leaner than others. Its workforce is on average 20 years younger than NASA's. According to government audits, Wednesday's flight will be millions of dollars cheaper than either the Russians or Boeing, Musk's American competitor. But it doesn't appear to be the win he's ever been satisfied with.

Again from that 2009 interview, Oberg asked Musk if he saw the company going further than the ISS. Musk answered, "It's not out of the question." It never was.

Musk now has his sights set on Mars.

WATCH: SpaceX Interplanetary Animation

"The fast way to do it is to drop thermo-nuclear weapons on the planet," Musk told host Stephen Colbert in 2005.

He hasn't talked about nukes much lately, but hasn't stopped thinking about taking humans to Mars.

On a windy night in September in Boca Chica, Texas, Musk unveiled his 'Starship,' a 390-foot tall stainless steel rocket Musk is hoping will be the prototype of a vehicle that will get to the moon and Mars beyond it.

READ ALSO: How to watch Wednesday's NASA/SpaceX launch from Kennedy Space Center

Musk bases much of that effort from the SpaceX outpost in Boca Chica, between Brownsville and South Padre Island, but not necessarily in Houston.

SpaceX has just a small office and handful of employees in Space City. From his outpost in south Texas, Musk wants to put a million people on Mars by 2050, with flights going out three times a day.

Earlier this month, Musk told Joe Rogan he was selling all of his homes to get rid of distractions and focus on space exploration.

"Does it really make sense for me to spend time designing a house, getting OCD on the details or should I be allocating that time to getting us to Mars?" Musk asked himself. "I should probably do the latter."

So when we cheer the launch tomorrow, don't think for a second the guy behind it is taking a rest.

Journal Junction for May 11th – Martinsburg Journal

From Martinsburg:

I don't know Betty DeHaven, nor have I read Ayn Rand's "Fountainhead" but I found the former's letter to the editor in Saturday's Journal to be one of the best written and more intuitive and compelling arguments for individualism over collectivism I've ever read. The very positive impression the novel made on Ms. DeHaven suggests to me it should be required reading in every high school Social Studies class in the country.

From Charles Town:

As testing for CoVid becomes more widespread, and we are finding a greater number of people show positive but do not show symptoms, much less die from the disease, why are we not allowed to be responsible adults? Increase of positives is actually demonstrating lower mortality rate and much higher recovery rate. We need to be released from the bondage of imposed social isolationism. We are living in a Socialist paradise of a forced collapsed economy.

From Hedgesville:

6.6 million going to college students in West Virginia 100,000 for essential workers to split in each county. 40% raise to snap plus 300 debit card. Seniors and veterans... nothing except higher taxes.

From Gerrardstown:

Tues. I went to the County Clerk's office to return my primary ballot. It was scary. The only person, besides myself, wearing a mask was the officer at the door checking people in. Not one employee in that entire complex, that I saw, wore a mask. To quote Daffy Duck, "It's DisssPICable" that county employees servicing the public are not wearing masks. Wear a mask, protect others.

From Hedgesville:

Trump's valet who tested positive for Covid19 was part of a team that served his meals and soda. Yet, he claims he ".....had little personal contact with the valet..." Does someone bringing you meals not an up close and personal contact? Next Pence will claim no personal contact with his press secretary. Why does Trump attempt to distance himself from anyone who brings negative "vibes" on him?

From Charles Town:

Yipppy Yay! Michael Flynn gets off the hook in time to recruit the Russians for 2020 election. Just in time.....Bill Barr to the rescue again.

From Martinsburg:

Senator John Unger, who is a great person, says on the news that there is money in bank in WV for COVID-19, now get that governor in gear, and get that money out NOW for people, people need that money for research.

From Morgan County:

To Martinsburg;True, unemployment is very high, under this terrible pandemic created in China, not in the U.S., and certainly not by Trump. $5 trillion in debt, terrible. You think this stimulus money was plucked from a tree, really?

From Martinsburg:

It sure would be nice to lower Comcast bills because there is nothing to watch on tv.

From Martinsburg:

Lost keys on Tuesday, May 5th either on King Street by the Journal office or at Bob's carry out. One key has a plastic yellow house on it. "If found please call 304-676-2888" There is a reward for it.

From Berkeley County:

Trump is following his past practices of bankrupting everything he touches. Now America is set to follow his lead into trillions of dollars added to the national debt, as lost people, unemployment and the recovery costs will mount due to Trump's failure to mount a strong action plan to meet COVID-19 threat.

Meaningful thoughts pass test of time – Bouldercityreview

I enjoy well said, meaningful sayings. Thoughts that are well-spoken, especially during a time of confusion, desperation and perhaps, situations that seem impossible, are often priceless.

I find it interesting that many of these offerings that are hundreds of years old are still sensible today. For example, as we contemplate the opening of our economic engine, stores, businesses, schools and churches the question of risk is put into the forefront of these decisions. Albert Einstein once said, A ship is always safe at shore but that is not what is was built for.

Think about it. Dont the majority of us have the common sense to make these decisions ourselves? Lets leave the dock with all of our safety equipment at hand and get down to business.

Abraham Lincoln proclaimed, We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the Courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who would pervert the Constitution. Does this sound a little bit familiar as we learn more about the women and men that are working diligently to empower themselves?

Ayn Rand, author of Atlas Shrugged penned, When you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from those that produce nothing When you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors When you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws dont protect them against you When you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice You may know that your society is doomed. Is this beginning to open ones eyes a tiny bit?

D.H. Lawrence stated, Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves. Have we instilled the virtues of this country, our freedoms, our well-written Constitution to our children in our home and in their schools?

And lastly, lets not forget Thomas Jefferson, who wrote, The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

These quotations were true the day they were said and are vastly true today. Just think about it.

Michael Jordan is widely regarded as the greatest basketball player ever and is arguably the greatest athlete of all time. What isn't up for debate, though, is his level of fame.

Everything from the iconic highlight reels and TV commercials to the number 23, the Jumpman logo, and the unforgettable crying meme easily make Michael Jordan the most well-known athlete in the world.

But even years after his retirement, sports fans have been dying to get an inside look at his life and career. ESPN gave fans exactly that with the recent release of "The Last Dance," a 10-part docuseries about the 1997-1998 Chicago Bulls.

While the documentary is centered around the team's final championship run, it largely focuses on the span of Michael Jordan's career, including highlight moments like his mother forcing him to take a meeting at Nike, all five of his previous championship wins, his short stint in baseball, and more.

There are two main takeaways from the docuseries. First, in addition to Jordan's natural talents, he had a relentless will to win and an unmatched level of determination, which is admirable by anyone who ever wanted to succeed at anything. The second is that his sneakers and gear on and off the court were always cool.

Michael Jordan, Steph Curry listed as the early favorites to play in The Match III – Yahoo Sports

The Match II hasn't even been over for a week and yet you can already bet on The Match III. America! What a place.

While there is no guarantee of such an event even happening, the odds are certainly in favor of one after arguably the most successful sequel since The Godfather Part II. The Match: Champions for Charity raised $20 million for COVID-19 relief efforts while becoming the most-watched golf event in cable television history. Not too shabby.

"We've had a lot of calls that last couple of days that people want in," Mickelson said on the Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday. "I think there's an opportunity here to create a competition that is also very entertaining that showcases a lot of personality but it's still very competitive."

Which leads us back to gambling. There's a difference between who wants in and who will make the cut. And BetOnline has already released odds on the next celebrity golf partners for Tiger and Philand Michael Jordan and Steph Curry are the (very) early favorites.

Who will partner with Phil Mickelson?

Who will partner with Tiger Woods?

As you can see, both Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are among the favorites as well. And why not? After all, they were a huge part of Sunday's success, which also included a pretty compettive match by the way.

Obviously, MJ and Steph seem like fantastic options. That being said, are they too good at golf? Part of Sunday's enjoyment was watching the struggles of Manning and Bradyespecially Brady who seemed like an actual human for the first time in two decades.

But wait, there's more! You can also bet on who will win The Match III with Team Tiger a -150 favorite. Again, we don't know who Team Tiger is or if there will even be a third THE MATCH. Also again, America!

And finally, you can bet on an over/under of five million viewers for this hypothetical event (The Match II drew an average of 5.8 million). While there is still so much to sort out here, we can tell you one thing: If Presidents Obama and Trump participated, this over would be the LOCK of the century.

Michael Jordan, Steph Curry, Charles Barkley and all the other big names we would want to see tee it up with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson – ESPN

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have always made it clear this new partnership in made-for-TV matches would not be a one-time thing. On Sunday, they gave us the second installment, adding Tom Brady and Peyton Manning to the mix for The Match: Champions for Charity, which raised $20 million for coronavirus relief.

A few times this week, Mickelson has floated more ideas, most notably to the Los Angeles Times and the Dan Patrick Show. But who might be next? Who would we want to see tee it up with or against Tiger and Phil? We asked around and got some interesting responses, including the ultimate match. (Hint, think Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley).

2 Related

Here's what we came up with:

Ian O'Connor, ESPN.comTiger Woods/Charles Barkley vs. Phil Mickelson/Michael JordanI might have gone with Brady and Belichick before Peyton Manning stole my Belichick thunder Sunday, but Jordan and Barkley would bring a ton of star power and tension to the table. It might take some convincing of MJ, since he apparently is no longer on speaking terms with his ex-good friend Chuck. But that strange dynamic would only add to the spectacle. Phil would loosen up Jordan, and Barkley would loosen up Tiger. Barkley would need a bunch of strokes to make this work, since he makes Brady seem like Ben Hogan. But coming off his "Last Dance" tour de force, Jordan would be feeling a lot of pressure on that first tee, as it has been a long time since he competed live with millions watching his every move. Can he keep it on the planet with Barkley needling him about his past big-money golf losses and a winning percentage, as an executive, that's not in Jerry Krause's ballpark? A lot of people would tune in to find out.

Tom VanHaaren, ESPN.comTiger Woods/Michael Jordan vs. Phil Mickelson/Steph CurryI would've stuck with the rivalry theme and put Michael Jordan against Isiah Thomas, but we all know now that Jordan wouldn't have played if Isiah was invited. I'll see myself out. In all seriousness, the golf would be fun to watch, the trash talking would be outstanding and having Jordan and Mickelson on opposite teams means we also might get some added excitement from side bets. This match would have the star power needed to draw a big audience, and while it isn't a rivalry, it would combine the old-school NBA with the new school in a fun competition. To follow up the success of the Brady-Manning match, you would need to go over the top and this matchup would check all the boxes to make for entertaining TV.

Bob Harig, ESPN.comTiger Woods/Phil Mickelson vs. Rory McIlroy/Justin ThomasThere are numerous ways this can go, but I like the idea of a pure golf competition with two of the game's legends against two of the game's young stars. And this time, let a Tiger-Phil pairing be a positive instead of a negative, as it was all those years ago during the Ryder Cup. To spice it up, make the competition true alternate shot or foursomes, not the modified version employed in the match with Manning and Brady. Having to play your partners' foul balls makes for a stressful way to play golf and can lead to some interesting scenarios. Based on the way he handled his role as an on-course commentator, you can bet that Thomas will fully embrace the trash-talking spirit. And given McIlroy's driving prowess, it could make for an interesting, competitive matchup. As for a location, how about Bandon Dunes to make for an impressive backdrop?

Charlotte Gibson, ESPN.comTiger Woods/Annika Sorenstam vs. Phil Mickelson/Karrie WebbWhy should the men have all the fun? Seriously, if we're even entertaining the idea of Match III, this time women better be involved. Of course, it would be phenomenal to watch Woods and Mickelson tee it up with the likes of Jordan and Curry, but wouldn't it be equally as phenomenal to see them tee it up with two Hall of Famers with a combined 113 LPGA Tour titles? This time, let's leave it up to the two biggest rivalries in golf both past and present. Sorenstam and Webb have one of the best LPGA rivalries that dates back to the mid-1990s.

Who else has that type of history? Woods and Lefty. The parallels in their careers are uncanny. And yes, I know that Sorenstam officially retired in 2008, and Webb took a break from golf for a few years before returning to the Tour last year. But the world hasn't witnessed a co-ed pairing like this since 2001 when Woods and Sorenstam started their storied friendship while playing the Battle at Bighorn, a made-for-TV event, that also featured David Duval and Webb. We're long overdue for men and women to face off on the course in a big, made-for-TV event -- and why not do it with some golf legends?

Michael Eaves, ESPNTiger Woods/Matt Damon vs. Phil Mickelson/Will SmithIf you've ever spent time on their Instagram pages, you would know that Phil and Will would make a natural pairing. Plus, they are two of the biggest stars in their respective fields, who have cashed in on their fame and performances like few others, despite a few flops on the biggest stages.

On the other side, Matt could bring a little something to the match that Tiger has clearly been reluctant to do in front of the cameras: NSFW trash talking! Those who have played privately with Tiger tell tremendous tales of his R-rated commentary, so with Damon as his partner, he can leave the F-bombs to the South Boston native.

And lastly, most importantly, Smith and Damon could make up for the utter disappointment that was "The Legend of Bagger Vance."

Mark Schlabach, ESPN.comTiger Woods/Michael Jordan vs. Scottie Pippen/Phil MickelsonThey could call it the "Last Match," because either Jordan or Pippen probably wouldn't make it to the 18th hole in one piece, given what was said during "The Last Dance." The trash talking would be epic. Like MJ, Pippen is an avid golfer. Jordan gave him his first set of clubs as a Bulls rookie so he could take his money on the course. Pippen and Mickelson are used to playing in the shadows of MJ and Tiger, so the matchup makes sense. With Phil and Jordan in the foursome, there would be some serious cash being thrown around, which would make it mighty interesting. If Pippen won't play, I'd settle for Isiah Thomas and Phil.

Nick Pietruszkiewicz, ESPN.comTiger Woods/Chris Paul/Larry Fitzgerald/Mike Trout/Lexi Thompson vs. Phil Mickelson/Steph Curry/Patrick Mahomes/Justin Verlander/Danielle KangHey, there are no rules here. So why not make it a one-day, Ryder Cup-style event? The Tiger/Phil Cup? Play three six-hole rotations of best-ball, alternate shot and singles. Look at those names ... think they won't have some fun? And all of them can play, too. Also, none of them are all that shy, so the trash talk should be strong.

Play Michael Jordan at Center and He Will Be The Best: Former Coach Rings Jordans Praises – Essentially Sports

The 2007 draft and the 1984 draft have one thing in common. Portland Trailblazers throwing away their picks on Greg Oden and Sam Bowie, who were picked #1 and #2 respectively. Although this will haunt them forever, it could have been avoided. Had Portland GM Stu Inman listened to his friend Bobby Knight, Michael Jordan would have been a part of Rip City.

Portland infamously passed on Jordan as they already had Clyde The Glide Drexler playing shooting guard. Like the Rockets, they were also looking for a strong big man to lead the defense and Sam Bowie seemed like the best option after Hakeem Olajuwon. But Bobby Knight, who coached Jordan during the 1984 Olympics, knew Michael was different. Play him [Jordan] at center, and he will be the best center in the league, he told a stubborn Inman, who was insisting on drafting a center.

Sam Bowie averaged a measly 10 points and 8.6 rebounds per game but was still selected in the All-Rookie Team. Jordan on the other hand, averaged 28.2 points 6.5 rebounds 5.9 assists and even 2.4 steals per game, going on to win Rookie of the Year. Bowies injury problems saw him feature just 139 times in four years at Portland.

One forgets that Stu Inman helped the Blazers to win the 1977 NBA championship. But not many Portland fans would forgive him for this draft mistake, which remains a stain on his legacy. In a clip from the 1980s which was also shown in the first episode of the Last Dance, Bobby Knight raves about Jordan. He says, In the categories of competitiveness and ability, skill and athletic ability, hes the best athlete. That, to me, makes him the best basketball player Ive ever seen play.

Jordan went on to form a dynasty at the Chicago Bulls after being picked #3 by the Bulls. Teaming up with Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, and Steve Kerr, he won a staggering six rings in eight years. Maybe he could have formed a similar partnership with Clyde Drexler at Portland.

During the 1992 finals between Bulls and the Blazers, Drexler said, I believe we could have coexisted. Jordan agreed with him, saying With a little hindsight, we could have adjusted to each other, because of our skills. It could have worked out. Portland fans can only imagine how that would pan out.

What are Jordans options if Israel annexes West Bank? – Al-Monitor

May 25, 2020

More than two weeks after Jordans King Abdullah issued what can only be described as the sternest warning to Israel if it goes ahead with its annexation plans, Jordanians and Israelis are still wondering how Amman will react if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does go ahead with his intention to annex parts of the West Bank and the Jordan Valley as early as July.

In his May 15 interview with German magazine Der Spiegel, the king warned of amassive conflict between Jordan and Israel if Israel really annexed the West Bank in July.

I dont want to make threats and create an atmosphere of loggerheads, but we are considering all options. We agree with many countries in Europe and the international community that the law of strength should not apply in the Middle East, the king was quoted as saying.

In what was seen as doubling down on the kings position, Prime Minister Omar Razzaz told the official Jordanian news agencyPetra May 21, [Jordan] will not accept this [annexation], and accordingly, there will be an opportunity for us to reconsider the relationship with Israel in all its dimensions, but we will not rush ahead of things.

He added that the Israeli plans come in exceptional circumstances represented by the coronavirus pandemic and the world's preoccupation with it, and that it became clear that there is an intention on the Israeli side to take advantage of the current situation in order to impose unilateral measures on the ground.

Razzazs statement came a day after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declared May 20,"The PLOand the state of Palestine are absolved, as of today, of all the agreements and understandings with the American and Israeli governments and of all the commitments based on these understandings and agreements, including the security ones.

Jordan has not commented on the Palestinian decision although a source close to the Jordanian government, who requested anonymity, told Al-Monitor that Jordan was in favor of the Palestinians engaging the [Donald] Trump administration in order to delay or foil Israels annexation plans.

Netanyahu, who formed anew government May 17 and vowed to extend Israeli sovereignty over parts of the West Bank, had not responded to King Abdullahs warning. But newly appointed Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenaziof the Blue and White partythat partnered with Netanyahus Likudwas quoted by the Jerusalem PostMay 18 as saying that he saw a great importance in strengthening the ties with the countries with which we have peace, Egypt and Jordan. He added that both countries are the most important allies in dealing with regional challenges.

Israeli pundits have been divided over the kings remarks. While some, including former security officials, have cautioned Netanyahu over the risk to the peace treaty with Jordan if he goes ahead with annexation, especially of the Jordan Valley; others, particularly those on the far right, have attacked the kingwith one commentator describing his warning as empty threats, adding that the peace treaty guarantees the survival of his regime.

But what would Jordan do if Netanyahu does go ahead with annexation? Al-Monitor has learned that Jordan is considering, among other options, suspending parts of the 1994 peace treaty claiming that the Israeli annexation of the Jordan Valley violates the delineation of borders between Israel and Jordan, in addition to being illegal under international law and pertinent United Nations resolutions. Immediate reaction may include expelling the Israeli ambassador in Amman and recalling the Jordanian ambassador in Tel Aviv.

The unilateral annexation of parts of the West Bank is seen as presenting an existential threat to Jordans national security. It not only renders the two-state solution irrelevant, but it resurrects some far-right Israeli claims that Jordan is a de facto Palestinian state. It also raises fears about the fate of over 2 million Palestinian refugees living in Jordan. Jordan had not supported Trumps peace vision, unveiled last January, and rallied Arab and international support for the two-state solution.

Writing in Al-Ghad daily May 16, political commentator Fahd al-Khitan said,Jordan will not pull out of the peace treaty with Israel because that option means going back to a state of war that Jordan cannot afford.

What is meant by a massive conflict is that bilateral ties will be frozen at all levels because Israels unilateral actions will destroy the elements of a just and lasting peace while toppling Washingtons ambitions of creating a new basis for regional cooperation, he added.

Political commentator Oraib al-Rintawi believes that Jordans reaction will be calculated and will gradually escalate. Writing in Ad-Dustour daily May 17, he said that abrogating the peace treaty is not the first option. One wonders about the fate of bilateral security coordination, the gas deal with Israel and two-way trade, he wrote.

But he admits that the timing of the impending crisis is sensitive since Jordan is dependent on US aid and is facing tough economic conditions made even worse by the coronavirus outbreak. Our options are not set in stoneand we could still use our special ties with the international community and with those in Washington outside the White House to put pressure on Israel short of succumbing to the new reality, Rintawi added.

The only official US reaction to Abdullahs warning came from US State Departments chief spokeswomanMorgan OrtagusMay 15, made during a phone briefing with Israeli reporters. Asked about her reaction to the kings statement, she said, The United States has a close relationship with the state of Jordan. We know that Jordan plays a special role in the Middle East, especially their relationship with Israel. What we want for both Israel and Jordan is a relationship that is not only strong on the security level, but that is also strong at the diplomatic level and the economic level.

We certainly understand that the king has expressed his concerns today and again that is why we think it is important to turn back to Presidents Trumps Vision for Peace, and to bring all parties to the table to work toward this peace plan, she added.

But what worries some Jordanians is the US reaction to Jordans tenacious position on Trumps peace plan. There is a growing belief that the Israeli lobby in Washington could be behind a letter that was sent earlier this month by six Republican congressmen to the Jordanian Embassy in Washington demanding the extradition of Jordanian national Ahlam al-Tamimi, who was previously convicted in Israel over the 2001 bombing of a Jerusalem pizzeria. Tamimi was released in a Hamas-Israel prisoner exchange in 2011, and a high court in Jordan rejected a US request for her extradition in 2017.

Under a 2019 US law, Jordan could be prevented from receiving US aid for violating an extradition treaty in relation to individuals wanted on charges for which the maximum penalty is life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Jordan claims the extradition treaty was never ratified by parliament.

There has been no official reaction in Amman to the congressmen's letter. But political columnist Maher Abu Tairwrotein Al-Ghad daily May 22 that while Jordan has enjoyed bipartisan support in Washington, it is now receiving conflicting messages. The threat of economic sanctions against Jordan over the Tamimi case is an important sign that should not be missed, he wrote. Could this be tied to Jordans escalation towardIsraels threat of annexation and what could affect the peace treaty with Israel? Abu Tair asked. We should keep an eye on the activity of the Israeli lobby in Washington while taking into consideration the possibility that the US administration may not like our latest position in any case neither US interest nor those of Israel will be served by weakening Jordan, he concluded.

No doubt, the Blockchain technology, along with the adoption of cryptocurrencies, is getting bigger. The business end of the market is expected to reach $21 billion over the next five years.

Expectedly, professional services giants are now taking a larger role in tackling new challenges in the market, the Big Four firms and other leading brands are working with several crypto and blockchain firms on ways to combat interoperability, regulatory challenges and development of the technology.

Henri Arslanian, PwCs global crypto leader, told Cointelegraph that the Big Four firms majorly have a vital role in the advancement of the cryptocurrency ecosystem, saying:

Although Bitcoin was designed with a trustless ideology, the reality is that the industry still requires trusted entities to catalyze the development of the ecosystem.

Arslanian added that when he first joined PwC years back, few people took crypto seriously. However, he saw an increasing demand for crypto assets, with some businesses starting to accept Bitcoin payments from clients.

Over the last couple of months, weve expanded our work. We recently closed the first-ever crypto fundraising deal at PwC, in which we led a $14 million Series A round for a Swiss-based crypto firm with Asian family offices. We are also the auditor for BC Group, a publicly listed crypto company in Hong Kong.

BC Group CEO, Hugh Madden, also said that BCs vision was to make use of crypto assets in Asias financial market. In turn, BC Group must set standards for compliance, security, and performance. Madden buttressed on the role of audits play by saying:

Auditing, like regulatory clarity, provides confidence to all stakeholders that companies are operating transparently and adhering to expected industry standards. As the business of digital assets continues to grow and mature, and compliance and regulatory standards become more robust, auditors will continue to play a pivotal role.

KPMG United States blockchain audit leader, Erich Braun, further contributed by saying that a businesss blockchain system should be developed with the intent to meet both accounting and operational needs to meet with accounting standards:

SEC issuers will want to design blockchain technologies to support the entitys internal control over financial reporting. Being able to prove how these technologies achieve their aims in a well-controlled environment is critical to a successful blockchain strategy. If the technology is not auditable, the immense benefits it brings, such as increasing efficiencies and cutting costs, may not be realized.

Henri Arslanian, added in his closing remarks that the Big Four firms are indeed the most important players for the crypto asset space. He said:

I believe the Big Four firms will serve as the bridge between the crypto ecosystem and the institutional world. It is good for both the crypto ecosystem and for professional services firms like ours as a new source of clients that we can help.

Will Shopifys New Cryptocurrency Partnership Widen Its Moat? – Motley Fool

Shopify's (NYSE:SHOP) platform allows its merchants to accept payments in bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, andover 300 other types of cryptocurrencies. It recently expanded that reach by partnering withcryptocurrency payments processor CoinPayments, which helps merchants process 1,800 types of cryptocurrencies.

Shopify claims the partnership will "make cryptocurrency transactions easier and more accessible while reducing transaction fees." CoinPayments CEO Jason Butcher declared the partnership would deliver a "seamless process for anyone looking to do business using cryptocurrencies."

CoinPayments has processed over $5 billion in cryptocurrency payments since its founding in 2013 and provides clients with various APIs, shopping cart plugins, and digital wallets. Shopify's cryptocurrency expansion isn't surprising, but will this new partnership widen its moat?

Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin have gained a lot of attention among speculators in recent years. However, the broad price swings -- which have ranged from about $500 to $19,000 for bitcoin over the past four years -- made them tough to accept as mainstream payments.

Last year, a survey by the Foundation for Interwallet Operability (FIO) found that only 30% of cryptocurrency owners actually used the coins forpayments. The vast majority held the coins as investments. A more recent survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit and digital payments platform Crypto.com found just 34% ofcryptocurrency usersprimarily used digital currencies for online payments.

Crypto Radar recently claimed 6.2% ofAmericans owned bitcoin, and 7.3% planned to buy some in the future. Yet the overwhelming majority (64.8%) didn't own any bitcoin and had no plans to buy any coins in the future. Another 21.8% hadn't even heard of bitcoin.

Those percentages indicate cryptocurrency payments don't appeal to mainstream shoppersyet. Nonetheless, manymajor companies -- including Microsoft, AT&T, and Expedia -- already accept bitcoin payments, though it's unclear how many customers actually choose those options.

Shopify alsorecently joined the Facebook (NASDAQ:FB)-led Libra Association, which wants to serve underbanked markets with its Libra cryptocurrency. That decision was surprising, since Libra had already lost many of its top members after regulators opposed its development.

However, Libra is being developed as a "stablecoin" which is pinned to fiat currencies instead of mining algorithms. That stability could make Libra a more viable payment option than bitcoin and other volatile cryptocurrencies, and tethering them to Facebook's Calibra digital wallet, Messenger, and WhatsApp could quickly expand its reach.

CoinPayments also processes payments in other top stablecoins like TrueUSD, USD Coin, and Gemini Dollar (GUSD). These currencies could be more appealing to merchants and shoppers, who can sleep easier knowing the value of their payments won't plummet or skyrocket overnight.

Shopify's partnerships with the Libra Association and CoinPayments could pivot its merchants from bitcoin toward less volatile cryptocurrencies. That process might be glacial and won't move the needle anytime soon, but it could enhance its broader platform -- which already serves over a million businesses in more than 175 countries.

Shopify's cryptocurrency partnerships should also widen its moatagainst Adobe's (NASDAQ:ADBE) Magento, which recently partnered with cryptocurrency payments platform Utrust to provide its crypto transactions to over 250,000 merchants. Magento is arguably Shopify's toughest competitor since it's tightly integrated into Adobe's other cloud-based analytics, marketing, and advertising tools.

The cryptocurrency market remains a niche one, butit could still grow from $1.03 billion to $1.4 billion between 2019 and 2024, according to Markets and Markets. Shopify probably doesn't expect cryptocurrency payments to overtake traditional payment methods anytime soon, but it also doesn't want to be left behind a crucial tech curve. If top cryptocurrencies like bitcoin stabilize and stablecoins gain ground, Shopify's recent partnerships could widen its moat against Adobe and other rivals while planting the seeds for future growth.

What to Know About Billions’ Cryptocurrency Drama If You Know Nothing About Cryptocurrency – Vulture

Photo: Jeff Neumann/SHOWTIME

If youre a fan of the Showtime drama Billions but having a tough time following the current seasons cryptocurrency story lines, youre not alone. Not only do the actors have trouble keeping up with the series twists and turns, even those who work in the financial sector dont necessarily understand crypto mining, a subject that pops up several times in season five. Half the people in finance couldnt explain what mining is to you, says New York Times best-selling author Ben Mezrich, who joined the Billions writers room this season as a consulting producer. A large percentage of them have no idea, because its complex.

As the writer of Bitcoin Billionaires and The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook: A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius and Betrayal the latter of which was adapted into the movie The Social Network Mezrich is a natural fit for the Billions team. His expert knowledge of cryptocurrency has provided the series with an opportunity to further explore this once-dark, underground area of finance. He also wrote this seasons third episode, which has Gordie Axelrod (Jack Gore), son of billionaire Bobby Axe Axelrod (Damian Lewis), running his own crypto-mining operation.

From the safety of his home in Quechee, Vermont, where hes riding out the COVID-19 pandemic, Mezrich was kind enough to guide Vulture through the intricacies of these esoteric plotlines. The result is this useful explainer for those of us who love Billions, but are still lost when characters like Axe and Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) start talking Bitcoin and blockchain.

Its a form of electronic money that sparked interest in recent years due to its skyrocketing prices. Its money that goes instantly from one person to the other, and theres no middleman, says Mezrich. A can be sent from person-to-person via their phone, just like a text.

The most well-known example of cryptocurrency is Bitcoin, which was created in 2009. But theres almost an infinite amount of cryptos at this point, says Mezrich.

This is the process of how the money is transferred from person-to-person. Because cryptocurrency doesnt use banks, miners are the ones who verify each transaction. Say I send you a Bitcoin, says Mezrich. The way that transaction is verified is, miners are working on computers attached to the network, which are doing these mathematical equations. And these equations, when theyre solved, they verify our transaction, and as a reward, the miner gets a certain amount of Bitcoin.

The process is very much like a contest, because all these different miners are competing to solve the equation, with the winner getting the Bitcoin. Mezrich likens mining to the race for the golden ticket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: You open all these wrappers and one of them is gonna have a piece of gold in it. But you dont know which one, and so youre incentivized to get all the [chocolate bars] you can. This is what these miners are doing: Theyre just continually trying to solve these equations. Because whoever solves it first, gets the golden ticket the Bitcoin.

You probably remember this term being bandied about by Chuck last season regarding mobile voting. A blockchain is a digital database containing information that can be simultaneously used and shared within a large, decentralized, publicly accessible network, according to Merriam-Webster.

Because its where all crypto transactions are logged. If I send you one Bitcoin, says Mezrich, that transaction is logged onto the blockchain. And the way it becomes verified is by these miners. Theyre the ones who essentially put these equations onto the blockchain.

Those guys are miners, and they were dealing with the aforementioned mathematical equations, which are not only very complicated, but require enormous amounts of computing power, says Mezrich. If you walk into a crypto mine, its computer after computer after computernot unlike what was inside the sketchy warehouse that served as the miners base in the episode.

The miners were drawing power from a town in upstate New York, which is where the legal issue comes into play. The problem is, if youre mining Bitcoin and you need to draw tons and tons of power, eventually, that cost can be more than what youre earning, explains Mezrich. So miners are always trying to find cheaper electricity. Enter the small town in question: The town gave the miners priority over their electrical power. By doing that, the miners are saving a lot of money, and they make a kickback deal with the town to get cheap electricity, but the way they get the cheap electricity is its being routed to them rather than the rest of the town, causing brownouts.

Axe is involved because hes the leader of a consortium that combined its resources to fund this operation. In the general scheme of things, its not a bring-down-Axe crime, but its certainly a way in [for Chuck], says Mezrich. So for now, there isnt enough evidence connecting him to this venture for Chuck to take legal action yet.

Instead of just mining Bitcoin, Gordie was mining a lot of different cryptos at once out of his prep-school basement. The way Axe describes his sons scheme to Wags (David Costabile) Its the smart way to do the stupid thing he was doing isnt much different from how Mezrich explains it. With multi-mining, you have a better chance of making money and you have less of a chance of getting caught, because youre hacking electricity on a smaller scale.

He was trying to pull down enough electricity to power a whole bank of crypto mines a bunch of computers to run all these calculations, says Mezrich. In so doing, he ended up short-circuiting and causing a massive power-grid failure.

Mezrich admits that Billions took a bit of dramatic license here.

He absolutely committed a crime by tapping into his schools (and the towns) power grid. If he had had his own power source, if he was just working at home with that, it wouldnt be illegal, says Mezrich. As for the actual crypto mining, Mezrich used Gordies tradition-bound prep-school headmaster as a stand-in for those who still see Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as the dirty part of the finance world. The mainstream has still not accepted it, he says. The headmaster would be one of the types who sees [Gordies behavior] as an affront to the men of honor that these kids are supposed to become.

Bitcoin founder may have just moved nearly $400,000 in untouched cryptocurrency – The Independent

The pseudonymous inventor of bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, who has yet to reveal their identity, may have indicated that they are still active in the cryptocurrency market.

Bitcoin was the first decentralized cryptocurrency a digital currency generated, or mined, when a computer solves a complex mathematical problem and was invented after Nakamoto wrote a white paper on the subject.

Each cryptocurrency can be tracked online on a publicly viewable ledger called a blockchain.

Sharing the full story, not just the headlines

On 20 May, a tweet from a cryptocurrency transaction tracking account suggested that 40 bitcoins ($391,055) were transferred from an account that had been dormant since 2009.

The coins in this transaction were mined in the first month of Bitcoins existence, the account said.

Speculation quickly grew that the funds could belong to one of the early bitcoin miners, such as Satoshi Nakamoto.

The account, which generated the coins on 9 February 2009 when they were worth zero US dollars, moved them on 20 May 2020.

It is reportedly the first time since August 2017 that someone has spent coins from early 2009.

However, while the age of the coins suggests that it was an account owned by Satoshi, many have raised questions about whether that is the case.

Jameson Lopp, chief technology officer of bitcoin security company Casa, said: Yall need to up your analysis game, arguing that the miner does not fit the Patoshi Pattern. The Patoshi Pattern looks at the cryptographic hash (called nonces) used in the blockchain process.

A flaw in the early bitcoin code means that some blocks have different patterns to others, and so can be identified as belonging to the pattern or not. Coindesks Zack Voell also suggested that this was not Satoshi, based on the Patoshi Pattern, as did the CEO of Blockstream.com Adam Back.

The reason that detecting Satoshis movements is so attractive to the cryptocurrency community is not simply to discover the identity of bitcoins founder; 99.9 per cent of all Patoshi Pattern blocks are unspent, meaning that 1.1 million bitcoins (approximately $7bn) is out there somewhere.

What is Bitcoin Everything you need to know

Satoshis identity is controversially claimed by Australian tech entrepreneur Craig Wright, who in 2016 said that he would release information verifying that he is the founder of bitcoin. As of writing, such evidence has not been reliably produced, but he has said in the past that he would sue doubters of his claim for defamation. Mr Wright has also been accused of using bogus contracts and false signatures to steal $5bn worth of bitcoin from his late business partner Dave Kleiman.

With regards to this most recent transfer, Mr Wright has reportedly denied that he moved the cryptocurrency. It is reported that Mr Wright made a statement saying: These coins are not my personal coins and I did not move them and as I have mentioned before I have no intent of dumping BTC or otherwise touching trust assets.

That statement, however, has since been removed with Mr Wright also laying claims to the wallet by providing a list of bitcoin addresses to a court as part of an ongoing legal issue against the estate of Dave Kleiman. Included on the list provided was the address used in the transfer, but that does not confirm ownership. Alongside the evidence that the transfer does not fit the Patoshi Pattern, the Kleiman estate has argued that the list provided was fake. We have reached out to Mr Wright for clarification.

Bitcoins $100K Probability Speculation or Economic Theory Backed? – Finance Magnates

Stemming from the confined venue of speculation and economic theory, there is much to address regarding the probability of whether Bitcoin will ever reach $100,000.

To bring light upon the query in motion, well analyze long-standing economic theories versus economists doubts while taking under due consideration deeply-rooted market variables, projections, and global acceptance that are all bound to distill a change in the value of Bitcoin in one way or another.

The Most Diverse Audience to Date at FMLS 2020 Where Finance Meets Innovation

With these truths in mind, lets begin.

Cryptocurrency enthusiasts have long poised the likelihood of Bitcoin reaching $100,000.

Evidence of this can be noted from high-profile individuals such as Anthony Pompliano, Co-Founder and Partner of Morgan Creek Digital.

I still think Bitcoin will hit $100,000 by end of December 2021. Fixed supply. Increasing demand. Time will tell.

Charles Hoskinson, Ethereum Co-Founder, had tweeted in late 2019:

Then, of course, we have the more recent actionable insights rendered through The Great Monetary Inflation proclaimed by macro investor Paul Tudor Jones, who acquired Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation earlier this month.

Despite acquisitions and proclamations attesting to Bitcoins impending worth, one should also assess whether these claims are rather a publicity stunt to increase Bitcoin participation or rather a deep-rooted belief originating from a coupling between past experiences and a desperate desire of riches to prolong extravagant lifestyles.

Regardless, these speculations should be taken with a grain of salt and weighed accordingly.

While crypto enthusiasts rely upon speculation in the crypto news, investors and Bitcoin participants tend to primarily formulate their assumptions upon tangible evidence that is derived from projection models and macroeconomic theories.

Projection models such as the Bitcoin S2F Model and M2 capitalization theory project astronomical valuations for Bitcoin but as time has shown us one of these models has already been debunked.

Over the past few years, and more prominent now as a method used to combat the financial ramifications of the Coronavirus pandemic, quantitative easing has been performed by countries central banks.

Take for instance the U.S. Federal Reserve, which has been printing U.S. dollars at an exponential rate since 1970.

Perhaps the most noticeable effects of the exponential printing of U.S. dollars would be inflation, where the price of goods and services has been rising in unison to meet the money supply.

Generally, a healthy economy would be characterized through depreciation in prices due to entities finding more efficient and affordable alternatives for similar goods and services but that is not the case.

To highlight the core point of this theory, should the Federal Reserve continue to print U.S. dollars at an exponential scale then, as a result, the U.S. dollar price of Bitcoin will also continue to rise at an exponential rate until it has reached a value of $100,000 per Bitcoin.

Also known as the Bitcoin S2F model, the Bitcoin Stock-to-Flow Cross Asset Model ratio created by @100trillionUSD seeks to measure the effect of scarcity on BTC price through measuring current Bitcoin circulation and production rate.

As @100trillionUSD suggested in 2019 through Modeling Bitcoin Value with Scarcity, The predicted market value for bitcoin after May 2020 halving is $1trn, which translates in a bitcoin price of $55,000. That is quite spectacular. I guess time will tell and we will probably know one or two years after the halving, in 2020 or 2021. A great out of sample test of this hypothesis and model.

While it doesnt take a mathematician to deduce how significantly short this economic model failed, up to 8 additional flaws have been reported regarding the Bitcoin scarcity valuation model.

As a result, we can no more put stock in economic theory than we can through unwarranted speculations.

The most level-headed forerunners for predicting future Bitcoin prices may be contributed to economists who have yet to be proven incorrect regarding their cynical-based projections.

Such examples include the projection laid upon us by Kenneth Rogoff, an economist and Harvard University professor, who went on to express the following during a CNBC interview:

ATFX Thanks NHS Frontline Workers with 1k Fruit Boxes DonationGo to article >>

I think bitcoin will be worth a tiny fraction of what it is now if were headed out 10 years from now I would see $100 as being a lot more likely than $100,000 ten years from now.

Basically, if you take away the possibility of money laundering and tax evasion, its actual uses as a transaction vehicle are very small,

It should be noted that Rogoff isnt the only economist who feels that Bitcoin wont amount too much value in the future.

Joe Davis, a lead economist for Vanguard, a high-profile investment firm, stated, Im enthusiastic about the blockchain technology that makes bitcoin possible As for bitcoin the currency? I see a decent probability that its price goes to zero,

The bitcoin its value is based off of scarcity and an artificial scarcity thats out there, Its really tough to imagine where the long-term return comes from other than speculation. Joe Davis

If speculations regarding Bitcoins future applications are truly the driving force behind the volatility then the valuation of BTC as a whole is crippled as a result of diminished cash flow.

While speculation and debunked theories are two sides of the same coin, black swan events are an entirely different entity that has been known to characterize an era of hardship and uncertainty.

Unforeseen black swan events, such as the recent Coronavirus Stock Market Crash, have gone to illustrate that no economy is impervious to flaws while also dismantling the long-standing ideology that Bitcoin is a safe haven asset.

Given the ramifications that can materialize from the wake of black swan events, no Bitcoin valuation can be complete without the possible occurrence of these devastating events.

To expand, modern times must be taken into account.

Such as, those of us reading this have already survived one black swan event but given how countries are starting to open their borders and governing states are once again re-opening their economies, the likelihood of another black swan event occurring as the byproduct of a second outbreak of Coronavirus only increases with each easing of confinement limitations folded back.

Therefore, it would be optimistic to the point of foolishness not to weigh these truths in your mind when speculating the possibility of BTC reaching $100,000.

One variable piece of the puzzle that can significantly influence Bitcoins likelihood of $100,000 per coin would be the mainstream adoption of Bitcoin.

Should a significant surge in Bitcoin participation become present, then the generalized economic theory of supply and demand can be implemented as an increase in participation will likely be contributed to an increase in demand.

Through an increase in demand comes an appreciation of value, which given how Bitcoin supply is limited, should further strengthen the ideology that an increase in Bitcoin demand will increase the price of Bitcoin.

Lets ditch the economic theories and speculations to conduct some simple arithmetic.

The maximum sum of Bitcoins that will exist is 21 million.

Should the value of Bitcoin reach $100,000 per coin then the total potential market capitalization of Bitcoin, once all mined, would be equivalent to $21 million x $100,000 = $2,100,000,000,000 or $2.1 trillion.

According to CNBC in late 2019, the value of the global equities market surpassed $85 trillion, or $85,000,000,000,000.

It should be noted that the global value of the equities for 2019 started under $70 trillion, meaning it saw an increase of no less than $15 trillion throughout the year 2019.

To put that into perspective, should Bitcoin reach a value of $100,000 per coin (even if all were mined) that would mean that the market capitalization of Bitcoin would be more than 40xs less than what the value of the global equities market was at the end of 2019.

($85,000,000,000,000 global equities value / $2,100,000,000,000 = 40.4761904762)

Putting stock in speculations asserted by cryptocurrency advocates will get you no further than faulty economic theories that can in no way, shape, or form take under due consideration all the innumerable variables that nest their way into the ever-changing Bitcoin valuation equation.

Through M2 capitalization theory and the renowned principles of supply and demand, we are rendered rather convincing insights into the possibility that Bitcoin could reach $100,000 which is further strengthened when you compare the capped off Bitcoin market capitalization of $2.1 trillion to that of the $85 trillion for global equities in 2019.

While, at first, it may have seemed like a highly unrealistic projection of Bitcoin reaching $100,000, but when you stop to put it in perspective with the total value of global equities then it may appear, to some, as only a matter of time.

Regardless, and to conclude, it is impossible to accurately predict the value of Bitcoin in 10, 20, or even 40 years from now but if history has taught us one thing it would be that anything is possible.
