Did the Attorney General Of California Really Think He’d Get Away With This? – America’s 1st Freedom

Clearly, the attorney general of California didnt expect researchers to actually check his historical sources. If he had, common sense tells us he would have been more careful. But then, gun-control advocates have long been willing to just make up historymuch of academia and the media, after all, wont mind and, in fact, will likely applaud them for it.

If you have been following the gun-rights battles for some time, you likely remember Michael Bellesiles rewriting of American history in his 2000 book Arming America. Incredibly, his version of early America had almost no guns in it until the Mexican War, almost no hunting, many restrictive gun-control laws and, generally, in his revisionist history, the people had a deep distaste for guns. If you remember Bellesiles, you might also recall that I played a part in discrediting him. (Last I heard, Bellesiles was tending bar, not teaching his peculiar form of history at Emory University.)

California Attorney General Xavier Becerras mischaracterization of history is nearly as egregious as Bellesiles.

A lawsuit over a ban on open carry of firearms in California brought this about. Until 1967, open carry of loaded firearms was lawful throughout California. Starting in 1967, open carry remained legal in cities if the gun was unloaded. Outside of most cities, open carry remained legal. Recently, the California legislature required people to get a license to open carry everywhere in the state. In Baird v. Becerra (filed in October 2019), gun-rights activists challenged this new California law.

I keep track of such cases because I have been a California refugee, now located in Idaho, for 20 years. Lawyers working on Baird v. Becerra hired me as an expert witness to read the California attorney generals brief defending the law. That brief claimed that open carry has not traditionally been legal in America, so I looked at their evidence for this. I found a collection of distortions.

Denying Open Carry Was LawfulCalifornias lawyers defended this new law in a brief that claimed open carry was never generally legal in America. They listed dozens of laws, starting with Britains 1328 Statute of Northampton, and state laws up to the Civil War that they claimed showed that open carry was unlawful. They also cited a dozen or more state Supreme Court decisions holding that open carry was unlawful.

So I did what I had done with Bellesiles scholarship. I looked up their sources. The dozen or so state laws from the antebellum period they claimed banned open carry turned out to be, in most cases, not even slightly on-topic.

Their brief referred to what are called session laws, the laws passed at each meeting of the state legislaturedate, state, page number, chapter and after the , the section number of the law. Here is an example of their citations: e.g., 1786 Va. Acts 33, ch. 21; 1795 Mass. Law 436, ch. 2; 1801 Tenn. Laws 259, 260-261, ch. 22, 6; 1821 Me. Laws 285, ch. 76, 1.

Nearly all of these collections of session laws were available online, so it was easy to check them. The law 1786 Va. Acts 33, ch. 21; was actually An act for giving further time to officers, soldiers, sailors and marines, to settle their arrears of pay and depreciation, with the auditor of public accounts.

The 1795 Mass. Law 436, ch. 2 is worse. Page 436 begins in the middle of chapter 68, An Act to Enable Sheriffs, Deputy Sheriffs & Constables, to Require Aid in the Execution of Their Respective Offices in Criminal Cases, and starts chapter 69 with: An Act for Recording Births and Deaths by the Clerks of Towns & Districts.

The 1821 Me. Laws 285, ch. 76, 1. is actually Resolve appointing a Committee to examine certain accounts, and to report the same to the Governor and Council.March22, 1821. And there were many other examples where the cited laws had nothing to do with guns at all.

There was just one match to their list of antebellum laws forbidding open carry: 1801 Tenn. Laws 259, 260-261, ch. 22. This is indeed An Act for the restraint of idle and disorderly persons. This was a vagrancy law for persons of ill fame or suspicious character, which includes the text of the Statute of Northampton (1328), an ancient law that forbid the wearing of armor to the terror of the people. Armored knights scared peasants and judges, because it suggested combat might occur at any moment.

How long Tennessees 1801 law stayed on the books is an interesting question. Simpson v. State (Tenn. 1833) was a Tennessee Supreme Court decision. Simpson was a drunken man who was armed while threatening others. The court concluded that Simpson had broken no law, and there was no mention by either prosecutor or defense attorney of that 1801 law.

Becerra, however, didnt simply make up his citations. The same session laws actually refer to different lawslikely both passed in early America during different sessions of a legislature that occurred in the same year. Instead, what he did was play semantics with words and phrases used at the time and he, it seems to me, intentionally hides the true purpose of law he cites by conflating the various session laws.

Peace Bond LawsAnother set of laws Californias lawyers cited by Becerra included a Massachusetts law that prohibited going armed with a dirk, dagger, sword, pistol or other offensive and dangerous weapon, absent reasonable cause to fear an assault, or other injury, or violence to ... person, or to ... family or property, on pain of being arrested and required to obtain sureties for keeping the peace. What was left out in their quotation? What was missing was that any person having reasonable cause to fear an injury, or breach of the peace could request a judge to order a peace bond. This law was written to be used on specific individuals who were given due process; it wasnt, as Becerra maintains, a sweeping prohibition on the carrying of arms.

Actually, this was sort of like a restraining order is today. You had to persuade a judge that you had reasonable cause to fear an injury from a particular person carrying a weapon. This was not a general ban on carrying a gunit was just for persons who a judge considered a danger to others. The California attorney generals brief listed seven other states with similar laws.

Three of the other state laws they cited were like this Massachusetts law, and all were nearly identical. As with their other citations, the other laws they listed had nothing to do with guns or peace bonds.

The actual Maine statute they claimed was like the others had this title: Resolve in relation to the Military road. Pennsylvanias read: A supplement to the several acts of the Assembly relative to the Pennsylvania State Lunatic Asylum.

It gets even worse when they start citing state Supreme Court decisions; for example, they quote: But the historical evidence shows that in America, as in England, a gun was considered an unusual weapon, citing State v. Huntly, 25 N.C. 418, 422 (1843). That decision actually says on that page: a double-barrelled gun, or any other gun, cannot in this country come under the description of unusual weapons, for there is scarcely a man in the community who does not own and occasionally use a gun of some sort.

The defendant, Huntly, was in court because he had made death threats while armed. The Huntly decision ends with: For any lawful purposeeither of business or amusementthe citizen is at perfect liberty to carry his gun. It is the wicked purposeand the mischievous resultwhich essentially constitute the crime.

Californias lawyers also tried to attribute the carrying of guns in the South to racism and slavery. But gun control has been a mechanism used to keep minorities from becoming fully free members of society.

Becerras brief tells us even in those [Southern] States, open carry was uncommon. (See, e.g., State v. Smith, 11 La. Ann. 633, 634 (1856)) But that is not what Smith says, if you read the whole sentence, not picking two words here and three words there, it says, We must understand the district judge as speaking of weapons as ordinarily worn, and where the partial exposure is the result of accident or want of capacity in the pocket to contain, or clothes fully to cover the weapon, and not to the extremely unusual case of the carrying of such weapon in full open view, and partially covered by the pocket or clothes.

Carrying weapons in full open view was not unusual according to the Smith decision; carrying a weapon in full open view, and partially covered by the pocket or clothes was what was extremely unusual.

Among the methods used, gun-controllers have put up lists of these distortions of laws at seemingly reputable university websites.

Deceptions About RacismCalifornias lawyers also tried to attribute the carrying of guns in the South to racism and slavery. But, as the work of many historians (including by Robert Cottrol and myself) has demonstrated, gun control has been a mechanism used to keep minorities from becoming fully free members of society from colonial times through the civil-rights movement.

Californias history of gun control is awash in racist assumptions. Even Californias current concealed-weapon license law was passed as part of a package of laws, that, in the words of the man who persuaded Gov. Friend William Richardson to sign it, was for checking tong [gang] wars among the Chinese and vendettas among our people who are of Latin descent. At the next election, in 1923, Richardson was endorsed byand refused to answer if he was a member ofthe Ku Klux Klan.

When California wrote its first state constitution in 1850, there was some discussion of whether it should include a right to keep and bear arms, as most state constitutions of that era did. A member of the convention named McCarver argued against it. Another delegate named Sherwood argued that denying an individual the right to bear arms would be null and void, inasmuch as it would be in opposition to the Constitution of the United States, and then quoted the Second Amendment. Sherwood thought an arms guarantee in the California Constitution was unnecessary because the Second Amendment already protected such a right.

Today, McCarver is remembered for another proposal he later made: that blacks would be forever banned from living in California. This was not just a ban on slaves, but free blacks as well.

When California revised its constitution in 1878, the subject came up again. Delegate ODonnell requested this constitutional provision: No alien who cannot become a citizen of the United States shall be allowed to bear arms. Why? Until 1952, no person of East Asian ancestry could become a naturalized citizen. Why add such a provision banning bearing arms by one segment of society if there was no right to bear arms?

In 2009, the California Assembly apologized for these laws. Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 42, July 17, 2009 read in part: Among other things, these laws denied the Chinese in California the right to own land or property, the right to vote and the right to marry a white person, denied children of Chinese descent access to public schools, denied Chinese immigrants the right to bear arms.

As I have said previously, the California attorney generals brief is a falsification of history.

The American Bar Association has Rules of Professional Conduct. Rule 4.1 says, In the course of representing a client a lawyer shall not knowingly: (a) make a false statement of material fact or law to a third person. I am pretty sure that if a pro-Second Amendment lawyer made this many false statements and out-of-context quotes there would be professional discipline. But, it seems, the rules do not apply to the other side.

Considering the role of Trump in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District – 13newsnow.com WVEC

The President carried the district in 2016, He's endorsed Scott Taylor in 2020 Republican primary.

NORFOLK, Va. President Donald J.Trump has now weighed in on Tuesday's Virginia Second Congressional District Primary.

He has given his "complete and total endorsement" to Scott Taylor, calling him in a tweet, a "fighter" who is "strong on the border, the military and the second amendment."

"I'm super humbled and appreciative of the President's support, of course," said Taylor.

The other two candidates in the contest have expressed admiration and support for the President.

"I'm supporting Trump on the economy, what he's done on various policies, what he's done around the world," said Ben Loyola. "It's not an apologetic tour. It's an America First tour."

And, said Jarome Bell: "That's one thing you can say about President Trump. He's a straightforward guy. And he's like me. He's a fighter and outsider. He's going to let you know what he's thinking. He's going to let you know where he stands."

Christopher Newport University political analyst Quentin Kidd says whoever wins the primary will do whatever he can to tie himself to Trump heading into the November general election.

"The Republicans who turn out to voter for Donald Trump are going to be energized and excited to vote for Donald Trump," he said. "The Republican candidate in the 2nd Congressional District needs that percentage of voters who vote for Trump to also vote for them.".

In 2016, President Trump carried the second district by 3 percentage points over Hillary Clinton, garnering more than 156,000 votes.

But in 2018, Democrat Elaine Luria defeated the incumbent Republican Congressman Taylor, also by around 3 percentage points; pulling in over 139,000 votes.

Aliscia Andrews wins GOP nomination for 10th Congressional District – Loudoun Times-Mirror

Marine Corps veteran Aliscia Andrews will challenge Democratic incumbent Jennifer Wexton in the Nov. 3 election for Virginias 10th Congressional District.

On June 20, Andrews won the final round of voting in the 10th Congressional District Republican convention, securing the GOP nomination. The convention was held outside Shenandoah Universitys James R. Wilkins Jr. Athletics and Events Center.

Andrews received 57.5% of the vote, defeating fellow Republican candidates Jeff Dove, Rob Jones and Matthew Truong.

I think we worked incredibly hard, but so did every campaign that was here today, Andrews said in a phone interview afterward. And I just am so humbled to be the nominee for the 10th District of Virginia.

The convention was held drive-through style, with 1,240 Republican delegates filling out ballots in their own cars and handing them to a volunteer. Voting took place from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Each delegate ranked their first, second, third and fourth choices. The ranked-choice voting was done to ensure that the Republican nominee for the 10th District race would be supported by a majority of the party, rather than a plurality. The votes were counted inside the Wilkins Center.

In the first round of voting, Rob Jones received 31.67% of the vote, Truong 30.47%, Andrews 27.53% and Dove 10.33%. After Dove was eliminated, the people who supported him had their votes allocated to their second choice. In the second round, Jones had 34.29%, Andrews 33% and Truong 32.67%. After Truong was eliminated and the votes reallocated, Andrews ended up with about 57.5% of the vote, while Rob Jones had 42.5%.

Im ready to start a Wexit movement to ensure that Virginia 10s constituents are represented for the first time in a long time, Andrews said. I genuinely want to thank the men I was up against for running an incredible campaign Rob, Jeff and Matt are incredible competitors. They are just wonderful men and I just am so humbled. And I am just so excited and Im so ready to take the hill.

Wexton has represented the 10th District in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2019. She defeated incumbent Republican Barbara Comstock in the 2018 contest by 12.4 percentage points.

The 10th District includes all of Clarke, Frederick and Loudoun counties; the cities of Winchester, Manassas and Manassas Park; and parts of Fairfax and Prince William counties.

Andrews said she stands with President Donald Trump in wanting to build a wall along the U.S.s border with Mexico, close immigration loopholes and secure Americas ports to stop illegal immigration. According to her website, she also stands with law enforcement and border patrol and supports policies that enable them to do their jobs while the far-left demonizes them.

Andrews, who is a contractor for the Department of Homeland Security and Intelligence on border security issues, considers national security a top priority. According to her website, she believes the U.S. should have a fully-funded and operational military, stating that the country needs to maintain military dominance over China, Russia, North Korea and Iran. She also vows to never vote in ways that infringe upon Second Amendment rights to bear arms, and she supports the Virginia counties that want to declare themselves Second Amendment sanctuaries.

Heather Rice, of Manassas, who was elected to the Republican Partys State Central Committee during Saturdays convention, said there is an understanding among Republican voters that whoever wins, we all will rally behind them. She said the convention had a good turnout, considering the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Im very proud of our party and their participation, Rice said. Weve got really great people participating in this event.

Frederick County Commissioner of the Revenue Seth Thatcher, who voted for Jones, said he will support the GOP nominee.

I dont think theres a bad candidate in the group, Thatcher said. I think the majority of people will fall behind the nominee.

Winchester resident Tony Growden said any of the Republican candidates could easily go up against Jennifer Wexton and defeat her.

Also during the convention, former Loudoun County Supervisor Geary Higgins was named chair of the 10th Congressional District Republican Committee, defeating incumbent Matt Leeds. Mark Sell, Ron Wright and Rice were elected to the Republican Party of Virginias State Central Committee. Ginni Thomas, Jo-Ann Chase and former Loudoun County Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio were made 10th District delegates to the 2020 Republican National Convention.

Phil Griffin, Rice and Wright were made alternate national delegates. Cathy McNickle became 10th District Presidential Elector.

County town hall shows schism over whether racism is here – The Daily Herald

EVERETT A man of color said its scary that he has to coach his children on what to do if they are accosted by police.

A white woman recalled how officers needlessly accused her Black boyfriend of having drugs during a traffic stop.

And yet, during four hours of testimony at a Monday night town hall on race and criminal justice, there was disagreement among the more than 50 speakers as to whether institutionalized racism has taken root in Snohomish County.

As a woman of color, looking at a non-colored panel, you cannot tell me that systematic racism does not exist. It does, one speaker, who did not identify herself, told the all-white County Council. You cannot make changes for people of color when you dont know the issues or youre being blinded to the issues.

The town hall comes as a wave of protests nationwide have called for an end to police brutality in the name of George Floyd, who died at the hands of police in Minnesota on May 25, and others whose lives have ended in law enforcements custody.

It highlighted the challenges that the council will face as it attempts to develop policies that promote equity in a county where some people say they live in different realities because of the color of their skin and others dispute that notion.

This is just the first of many steps, Council Chairman Nate Nehring said at the conclusion of the meeting. All of us want to follow through with genuine action.

The council announced the meeting after County Executive Dave Somers unveiled a sweeping racial justice plan, including body cameras, cash bail reform and a community police oversight board. Theres no definite timeline or funding for the county executives plan; Somers has said it will likely take years to bring to fruition and require support from the leaders of county governments two largest law enforcement agencies, Sheriff Adam Fortney and Prosecutor Adam Cornell.

Mondays meeting showed Somers that theres still quite a bit of denial about the racism that exists in the county, the county executive said at a Tuesday morning press briefing.

Weve got a long way to go, he said. Still, I think theres been an awakening, and Im very optimistic that were going to make some really real progress in our county and our community, he added.

Several speakers at the town hall, including Ben Smith, expressed concern about racism against white people.

Smith said he was against Somers proposal to ingrain social justice in county government policies. He said Somers is scared of mob-like protesters who are shouting for change.

Social justice becomes racism. Social justice becomes discrimination, Smith said. Lets continue whats so great about America and try to be colorblind about most things.

Another man, Randy Hayden, called on the county executive to step down. Hayden accused Somers of throwing gas on the fire instead of water by sharing posts on Facebook about white privilege that Hayden said contained false information.

The town halls suggestions for criminal justice reform ranged from shooting unruly protesters with paintball guns to overhauling the public school funding system so that its no longer tied to property tax values.

The Snohomish County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is asking that the county create a community task force to review complaints of excessive force or misconduct by law enforcement, install dashboard cameras in sheriffs office vehicles and implement training programs that teach deputies how to recognize and manage systemic discrimination. Sandra Palmer, one of the branchs executive officers, made those requests after criticizing Fortney for his refusal to enforce Gov. Jay Inslees stay-at-home order amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Palmer also blasted Fortneys decision to clear a deputy of wrongdoing after the deputy tackled a Black woman accused of jaywalking.

Sheriffs Office personnel are required to attend two hours of crisis intervention training every year, plus additional instruction related to using force and preventing harassment and discrimination, a council staffer said at the beginning of the meeting.

Several people said two hours was not enough time.

Some called on the council to redistribute sheriffs office funds to other programs and social services that promote community well-being.

Those suggestions echoed demands that a group of public defenders made on June 8 when they called on the council to allot half of the sheriffs office budget to housing, counseling and other social services.

Advocates have made similar requests to defund law enforcement in cities across the United States. They say social workers and other specialists are better suited than police to deal with 911 calls related to issues such as mental health and domestic disputes.

We need to shift these funds from the police department to actually deal with the root causes that people call 911 for which is homelessness and housing and social services for mental health and health in general for people, Lynnwood resident Yolimar Rivera Vazquez told the council. People of colors lived experience is being erased by other peoples comments. You really need to look beyond that.

Attendees alluded to events that recently unfolded in Snohomish, when armed vigilantes lined the historic downtown in what some say was an attempt to protect local boutiques from alleged leftist looting threats that never materialized. One of the self-appointed guards waved a Confederate flag, and some wore apparel blazoning hate group symbols.

A few people who spoke during Mondays meeting defended the vigilantes.

It didnt look violent at all while we were there, said Dave Goldsmith, a Snohomish resident, who added that he was against violating the Second Amendment gun rights of those on Snohomishs First Street.

Others, though, called for a deeper investigation into the incident and any involvement by hate groups.

Brittany Tri, an attorney who lives in Everett, stressed the need for fundamental criminal justice reform, beyond additional training for officers.

We have to modify the entire system, not just individual officers actions, Tri said. This is not about weeding out bad eggs or individual racists in the system. This is a system that we have seen consistently brutalizes people of color, people in poverty.

The meeting, which was originally slated for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., continued until 10 p.m. It drew several hundred viewers.

Leaked Elon Musk Email, Plus Tesla Firmware 2020.24.6 and Texas Gigafactory Hearing – TheStreet

Musk's Quarter-End Email

Electrek is reporting on a leaked email from Elon Musk to all Tesla employees on Monday afternoon as Tesla approaches the end of their second quarter on June 30th.

For many reasons, a great deal of Tesla execution worldwide is packed intothe final week of the quarter. It is very important that we go all out throughend of June 30 to ensure a good outcome. Wouldnt bring this up if not veryimportant.

Thanks Elon [sic] - Elon Musk

The more bullish faction of Tesla observers seem to believe Musk's email points to efforts to post a positive GAAP profit in Q2, the last remaining hurdle to Tesla's eligibility for inclusion in the S&P 500. However, Musk has recently expressed his belief that TSLA's stock price is too high, so investor excitement over potential share price upside as a result of S&P 500 inclusion is likely not all that important to Musk. If Tesla does not meet the requirements with their second quarter results, they are likely to qualify after Q3. Nevertheless, GAAP profitability in a quarter containing a global pandemic and lengthy factory downtime would be a significant and highly-motivating achievement to pursue regardless of the S&P 500 implications.

Before assuming Musk's email is bullish, it's also important to consider previously leaked quarter-end emails. InQ1 of 2019, a leaked Musk emaildiscussing quarter-end execution preceded tough delivery and production numbers, poor earnings, and a significant decline in TSLA's share price.

For the last ten days of the quarter, please consider your primary priority to be helping with vehicle deliveries. This applies to everyone. As challenges go, this is a good one to have, as we've built the cars and people have bought the cars, so we just need to get the cars to their new owners! - Elon Musk, Q1-2019

Though Tesla did face unprecedented delivery challenges with the international rollout of the Model 3 that quarter, deliveries were not the only pain point at the time. Teslas production in Q1 of 2019 was down roughly 9,400 vehicles compared to the prior quarter. Historically, Tesla's production has grown quarter-over-quarter with the previous largest quarter-over-quarter production decline being just ~1,600 vehicles back in Q3 of 2014.

That's not to say the email is necessarily a bearish signal. Leaked Musk emails have preceded plenty of strong quarterly results. Both points of view are important to consider for TSLA investors or, more precisely, traders.

Firmware 2020.24.6 Rollout

Tesla firmware version 2020.24.6 has begun rolling out as an over-the-air update. With the update,Tesla's "Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control" functionality no longer requires driver confirmation to continue straight through intersections with a green light, as long as there is the presence of a lead vehicle.

Teslascope has shared the full release noteswhich include "Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control" for Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Additionally, some variants of Model S/X vehicles will have their maximum charging rate increased to 225 kW.

Significant updates to camera functionality are included in this update as well. Drivers can now view the side repeater cameras on screen in addition to the rear-view camera for added scope of visibility. Interestingly, Tesla has also finally enabled some functionality from the interior cabin camera on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.

Help Tesla continue to develop safer vehicles by sharing camera data from your vehicle. This update will allow you to enable the built-in cabin camera above the rearview mirror. If enabled, Tesla will automatically capture images and a short video clip just prior to a collision or safety event to help engineers develop safety features and enhancements in the future. As usual, you can adjust your data sharing preferences by tapping Controls > Safety & Security > DATA SHARING > Allow Cabin Camera Analytics. Note: Cabin camera images and video clips will not be associated with your VIN to protect your privacy. - Tesla

The primary purpose of this camera is to allow monitoring for a future Tesla Network robotaxi scenario, but Tesla has decided to put the camera to use in the meantime to help improve the safety of their vehicles.

Progress on Texas Gigafactory Proposal

Travis County held a hearing today with Tesla representatives, local officials, and the general public to discuss Tesla's factory and tax break proposal. Tesla explained their request for property tax relief was due to Texas including equipment in their property tax calculations. As a vehicle manufacturer, Tesla's equipment is some of the most expensive in the world, and Tesla feels the taxes on that equipment would be prohibitive to operating successfully in the Texas location. Tesla pointed more significant incentive offers from other states, but expressed their interest in Travis County for three main reasons.

As should be expected, public feedback was mixed with varying levels of enthusiasm. Another hearing is scheduled for next week and will be followed by further deliberation.

How to land a job at Elon Musk’s SpaceX, according to the rocket company’s software team – CNBC

SpaceXsuccessfully launched two NASA astronautsinto orbit for the first time on May 30 and in doing so, CEO Elon Musk reached a milestone inhuman spaceflightandis one step closer to achievinghis Mars ambitions.

Six of the SpaceX software team members who helped "develop and deploy software that flew Dragon," aka the Crew Dragon capsule used to launch the astronauts, held a Reddit"Ask Me Anything" sessionon June 6.

"We are here to answer any questions you might have about Dragon, software and working at SpaceX," the team wrote on Reddit.

The job of each team member varied from managing software development for the Crew Dragon Demo-2 launch torunning flight software and cybersecurity and each shared a bit of advice on how to get a job at SpaceX.

Here are the team's best tips on getting a software job at SpaceX.

During the AMA, a Reddit user who identified as a high school student asked, "What can I do if I want to get a software job at SpaceX sometime in the future?"

"Get your CS [computer science] degree or something similar" to "really make sure you know how things work,"Jeff Dexter, who runs flight software and cybersecurity at SpaceX, said.

"[E]ngineers who do well at SpaceX are meticulous in their understanding of how their code works, how the network works, how Linux works, how the hardware works, etc.," he explained.

Plus, many of theopenengineeringandsoftware job listingsat SpaceXinclude a bachelor's degree or higher education as a basic requirement.

In addition to a degree, "get real world experience building things and solving hard problems, either through hobby projects or in internships (at SpaceX!)," Dexter advised.

For instance, SpaceX has "noticed particularly good crossover between video game development and what we do,"John Dietrick, leader of the software development effort for Demo-2, said on Reddit."There are a lot of similar math-heavy and performance-centric problems in the two spaces."

In fact, Musk has said his own love of video games inspired him to start programming when he was 12, hecoded a video game called "Blastar," which he latersold for $500to trade publication PC and Office Technology magazine.

While a degree or experience can help, neither is the end all, be all.

"Having different people with different backgrounds (education, experience, and culturally) is a big plus on the team," Matt Monson, who used to work on Dragon and now leads Starlink software, said. "Not much of the team, for example, comes from an aerospace background. Different points of view help us see problems from different angles, and that quite often helps us see solutions we wouldn't have otherwise seen."

When it comes down to it, "we're really looking for a couple things: talent (potential) and the right attitude (desire for self improvement, serving the team over being selfish)," Monson says. "These are more important than specific experience, and we expect to be investing in people to help them grow."

As Musk himself tweetedin February, in order to work at SpaceX, "A super hardcore work ethic, talent for building things, common sense & trustworthiness are required, the rest we can train."

Artist turns Elon Musks viral tweets into illustrations that are now part of a colouring book – The Indian Express

By: Trends Desk | New Delhi | Updated: June 18, 2020 11:44:43 am The artistic interpretation of Elon Musks tweets has been turned into a colouring book for all. (Source: @_ill_ink/Twitter)

SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk loves Twitter and has posted everything from cryptic tweets to memes, that have created buzz and controversy. One woman has now come up with artistic interpretations of these tweets and theyre part of a colouring book that costs $30 (Rs 2284).

Titled The Illuminated Tweets of Elon Musk, the 52-page colouring book has sketches based on the billionaire entrepreneurs tweets from July 2016 to May 2020. Colorado-based artist Salina Gomez, who is popularly known as Ill Ink online, has come up with the sketches that are arranged in a chronological order in the book. This is expected to allow people to understand the changes in Musks vision and development.

Musks Twitter feed, once I had found it, brought me a lot of joy, Gomez wrote on her Kickstarter page. I decided to take on the role of a gonzo editorial cartoonist reading the Musk Twitter Headlines, subjectively interpreting them in a whimsical, positive manner, all the while immersing myself in the Twitterverse experience.

I wanted to keep the book light-hearted. There is a page dedicated to a Jupiter is big tweet, which is literally just a huge drawing of Jupiter. Another image show group of people sitting around a huge table, with the planets sketched at the foreground based on Musks poll for Make the Mars technocracy real where over 92 per cent people voted for yes.

Another picture captures the excitement of Musks tweet which mentioned the first private passenger for a voyage around the moon, Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa.

Saying that mostly editorial cartoons focus on societal ills and corruption, the young illustrator said she wanted to set herself apart.

I wanted (and needed) to counterbalance the worlds problems with positive and hopeful content. Not only was Elon Musk the perfect person to focus the projects energy on, I wouldnt have even come up with the project if it werent for him. Musk is a once in a lifetime entrepreneur, engineer and visionary and I think it is right to say that this book is a byproduct of his profound determination to dream big, she added.

The crowdfunding campaign has created some buzz online already and the artist said she was overwhelmed with support.

(Source: illink/kickstarter)Promising rewards to fellow Musk followers, the artist has also created a special poster just for a campaign. Based on one of her favourite pages, the Cyborg Dragon poster is basically a whimsically coloured version of the April 2018 tweet: Oh btw Im building a cyborg dragon.

People who have backed the project and pledged to buy the book will receive their orders in time for Christmas. Gomez said she planned to send out 200 signed copies of her book starting October.

Elon Musk Bitcoin vanity addresses used to scam users out of $2 million – ZDNet

Bitcoin giveaway scams have been around for more than two years, but a new twist in tactics has helped scammers make more than $2 million over the past two months from Elon Musk's name.

The new trick involves the use of Bitcoin vanity addresses in order to give the scam more credibility in the eyes of a suspicious user.

Vanity addresses are Bitcoin addresses that incorporate a custom word in the address itself -- such as "1MuskPsV7BnuvMuHGWmmXUyXKjxp3vLZX6" or "1ELonMUsKZzpVr5Xok8abiXhhqGbdrnK5C."

Over the past month, Justin Lister, CEO of cyber-security firm Adaptiv, has been tracking the use of Bitcoin vanity addresses abusing Elon Musk's name in giveaway scams.

Lister has been collecting the addresses with the help of BitcoinAbuse, a website where users can report Bitcoin addresses abused in ransomware, extortions, cybercrime, and online scams.

In a spreadsheet shared with ZDNet earlier this week, the Adaptiv CEO said he tracked down 66 addresses that have been reported by scammed users on BitcoinAbuse.

Lister said the 66 addresses received more than 201 in Bitcoin since being created in late April 2020.

Since receiving the spreadsheet from Lister earlier this week, a 67th Elon Musk vanity address was also submitted to the BitcoinAbuse website. This vanity address held an additional 13.9 Bitcoin, which brought the total to 214 Bitcoin, a sum that now stands over $2 million at today's exchange rate.

The $2 million sum is enormous if we take into consideration the low effort required to run one of these scams.

Because BitcoinAbuse also requires users to add a short description of where they encountered the Bitcoin address, this made investigating the source of some of these scams much easier.

Based on ZDNet's review, most of the Bitcoin vanity URLs had been shared with the help of YouTube live streams.

Hackers hijacked high follower-count YouTube accounts, changed the account name and its graphics to mimic the account of a celebrity or a trusted brand, and then launched a live stream to broadcast their scam.

The scam relied on tricking users into sending Bitcoin to the scammers' address, on the promise of doubling their profits, part of the giveaway -- usually organized on the occasion of an important event in the celebrity/brand's history.

In our investigation, we found that hackers had either renamed the channels to Elon Musk's name, the SpaceX brand, or news outlets such as Euronews, seeking credibility.

The Bitcoin address was usually embedded either in the live stream itself, and users had to scan it with a QR code reader, or users were asked to visit a dedicated "giveaway" website.

But we're not reporting on something new here, with multiple of these fake Elon Musk giveaway live streams making the news this month alone [1, 2].

Bitcoin giveaway scams abusing the Elon Musk and SpaceX names have been going on all month, ever since SpaceX and Musk made the news last month for the company's first successful rocket launch carrying a live NASA astronaut crew.

Bitcoin and Ethereum giveaway scams have been around since at least February 2018, when the first such case was reported. Since then, the trick has gotten old and users have gotten better at spotting the scammers.

The role of the Bitcoin vanity address was to give more credibility to the scam and make it look authentic, similar to how "verified profiles" give more authenticity to accounts on social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

The Bitcoin network doesn't have a way to "verify" addresses, so vanity addresses, which are hard to come by, are the closest thing to a "verified" Bitcoin address.

The trick of using Elon Musk vanity addresses was, obviously, successful, helping crooks net more than $2 million, but it wasn't the only one.

ZDNet also found other vanity addresses submitted to the BitcoinAbuse database and reported as being abused in similar YouTube-based giveaway scams.

We similarly found vanity addresses for SpaceX and Bill Gates. Both have been used in similar YouTube-hosted giveaway scams, with the Gates-themed addresses holding more than $100,000 in stolen funds.

In addition, we also found another Bitcoin vanity address that was not available on the BitcoinAbuse website. This one had been used for a giveaway scam that tried to take advantage of the recent launch of the Play Station 5 gaming console. Luckily, no user fell victim to such a scam.

Similar scams abusing Linus Torvald and Mark Zuckerberg's names have also been reported, along with brands like Facebook, Twitter, and even the UN.

As long as these scams have a giant return-on-investment and crooks make more than they spend setting up the scam, the "giveaway" scourge will continue to haunt cryptocurrency owners.

Users should be wary as these scams aren't limited to YouTube live streams only, and have been also spotted on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and more recently on TikTok -- similarly by hacking into high-follower profiles and broadcasting the scam for a short period.

In most cases, these scams are powered by hacked accounts sold on hacking forums for prices going from $5 to thousands, depending on the follower count. Taking into account that some scammers are making as much as $180,000 a day, the scams are most likely to go on for years, or until users stop falling for the scams.

Why Intelligent Minds Like Elon Musk and Steve Jobs Embrace the Rule of Awkward Silence – Inc.

Love them or hate them, Elon Musk and Steve Jobsare known astwo of the most brilliant minds the business world has ever seen.

Yet, despite their ability to process information, think critically, and identify key insights--many of which helped Tesla and Apple reach valuations into the billions of dollars--both men became known foran unexpectedhabit:

They've embraced the rule of awkward silence.

The rule of awkward silence is simple: When faced with a challenging question, instead of answering, you pause and think deeply about how you want to answer.

But make no mistake, this is no short pause. You might go five, 10, or even 15 seconds before offering a response. Which, if you're not used to doing it, will feel very awkward--at first.

Garrett Reisman, an engineer and former astronaut who left NASA to join SpaceX, described how Musk uses this technique ina recent interview.

"If you pose to [Elon] a serious question," says Reisman, "he'll consider it. And he'll kind of go into this, almost like a trance--he'll stare off into space and you can see the wheels turning. And he's focusing all of his intellect, which is considerable, on this one question."

You can actually see this happen almost anytime Musk himself gives an interview. In fact, it's not uncommon for Musk to take from between five to even 15seconds to think before giving an answer. (Just check out the 20:00 mark of this interview.)

Apple co-founder Jobs was known to do the same. In fact, there's a perfect example captured on video over 20 years ago.

It was 1997, and Jobs had just returned to Apple after being ousted from the company over a decade earlier. He was conducting a Q&A at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference when an audience member took a shot at him, telling Jobs, "You don't know what you're talking about" and sarcastically asking what the famous founder had been working on for the past seven years.

He takes a sip of water ... and sits.

After making a short joke, he pauses again.

This time for eight seconds.

What follows, after Jobs reflects on the question and contemplates the criticism, inwhat amounts to20 seconds of awkward silence, isa masterful demonstration of how to respond to an insult. (Ibroke down Jobs's entire response here,if you're interested.)

As these examples illustrate, the rule of awkward silence is a great tool of critical thinking. It can help you to give deeper, more analytical, more thoughtful answers. It can help you get to root problems more effectively, which leads to greater understanding.

But the rule of awkward silence offers another major advantage, and it has muchto do with the way our brains process emotions.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify, understand, and manage emotions--and the rule of awkward silence is a great way to show it.

When it comes to calm and rational thought, we typically engage a part of our brain known as the prefrontal cortex. But when we feel attacked or under pressure, we engage another part of our brain known as the amygdala, which tends to take over in a type of "emotional hijack."

That's not always bad, as our emotions can help us get out of difficult situations.

The problem comes when those emotions go unchecked, and we say or do things that we later regret.

Think back to the example of Steve Jobsresponding to the insult. This was one of Jobs's first major appearances after rejoining Apple. By the time he left many years previous, he had built a reputation as being arrogantand unable to work well with others. With the wrong response,he could have lost the confidence of his company, investors, and the public before his turnaround plans got underway.

Instead, by embracing the rule of awkward silence, he was able to keep his emotions under control and deliver a perfect response.

Think also about Musk's interview style, and the lessons we learn from it.

When it comes to answering challenging questions, you might be tempted to just spit out anything, even if doesn't make much sense. Or, you might say what you think the other person wants to hear instead of what you truly believe.

But is that what you really want? Or would you prefer to take some seconds to pause, to think things through, and then to respond in a way you're proud of later?

So, the next time someone asks you a challenging question, try to take your time before giving an answer. In doing so, you will:

The more you practice, the awkward pause won't feel so awkward anymore--andthe more you will be able tomake emotions work for you, instead of against you.

Column: Tesla’s reluctant commitment to cobalt a warning to others – Andy Home – Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - The unpredictable Elon Musk strikes again.

FILE PHOTO: Tesla Inc CEO Elon Musk speaks onstage during a delivery event for Tesla China-made Model 3 cars at its factory in Shanghai, China January 7, 2020. REUTERS/Aly Song/File Photo

Just when his electric vehicle (EV) company Tesla seemed to be pivoting away from using cobalt in its batteries, it signs a long-term supply deal for the controversial metal with Glencore.

This from the man who has vowed to eliminate cobalt from the Tesla product mix because of its financial cost and the reputational cost of a metal associated with child labour and poor safety conditions at artisanal mining operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the worlds dominant producer.

Teslas not the first auto company to lock in future cobalt supplies with a miner. BMW did the same last year, also with Glencore as well as with the Bou-Azzer mine in Morocco.

But Tesla is the standard-bearer for the EV revolution and its deal with Glencore has strategic significance for the global battery raw materials supply chain.

Its a boost for cobalts prospects, both in terms of physical demand and, more importantly, in the apparent admission that cobalt isnt going away as a battery material any time soon.

Its also a warning to other auto companies that if they want cobalt, theyre going to have to take control over their own supply chain.

Tesla and its battery partner Panasonic have until now largely used a nickel-cobalt-aluminium (NCA) formula in their lithium-ion batteries.

Other automotive companies targeting the passenger vehicle market have adopted nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) technology.

Everyone has been trying to reduce the amount of cobalt in the metallic mix. Cobalt is expensive, currently trading around $33,000 per tonne on the London Metal Exchange. It has a history of volatility both in terms of price and supply, which is dominated by production, both official-sector and artisanal, in the Congo.

The human cost of artisanal mining also weighs heavy on an industry that is driving towards a green and socially responsible future.

Teslas desire to shift away from cobalt usage seemed to be borne out by the revelation its new Chinese plant would use cobalt-free batteries.

Lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries have been around a long time, are cheaper than cobalt-containing batteries, but lack energy density. The biggest market is China, where they are used in vehicles that dont need extensive range or high performance, such as municipal garbage trucks.

However, it seems that Chinese LFP battery makers such as Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) have been quietly improving the technology to the point that Tesla is now interested in using it in its Model 3 cars in China.

But its also clear from the Glencore deal that Tesla, however reluctantly, is going to continue using cobalt in other markets.

Teslas willingness to consider a range of battery types is testament that the EV revolution is going to be characterised by multiple chemistries depending on vehicle type and geographic market.

And some of them at least are going to use cobalt.

GRAPHIC: Tesla's reluctant commitment to cobalt a warning to others - here

Teslas deal to buy 6,000 tonnes per year of cobalt from Glencores Congo operations is a double boost for the market, representing a long-term affirmation of demand and a short-term way of clearing excess stocks.

The cobalt market has yet to recover from the crash that followed the price boom of 2017-2018 as too much supply, particularly from the Congos artisanal sector, swamped demand.

Glencore last year placed its Mutanda mine in the Congo on two-year care and maintenance, while its Katanga mine was carrying stocks of almost 13,000 tonnes at the end of 2019.

Those stocks have weighed heavily on the price. Fastmarkets assessment of standard-grade cobalt currently sits at an 11-month low of $14.75 per kilogram ($30,250 per tonne)

However, Glencore has recently concluded a flurry of supply deals with battery-makers and now with Tesla, signalling the company has placed a strategic focus on forward selling its built-up hydroxide stocks, according to analysts at Roskill.

The research house estimates that Glencore has now locked in sales representing around 82% of production at Katanga. That, combined with Mutanda on care and maintenance, significantly reduces the volumes of cobalt available in the open market.

That may translate into an accelerated price recovery when the next EV-led demand surge happens.

It also means theres potentially less around for everyone else. There are several new cobalt mines in the planning or development stage but the Congo and its artisanal miners are going to remain the dominant supplier for the foreseeable future.

That simple fact explains why Tesla has moved directly to ensure its own supply with the largest non-Chinese producer in the country.

Other automotive makers may well take heed.

Teslas move directly to take responsibility for its cobalt supply isnt without risk.

Glencore may be a London-listed multinational, but its not immune to the negative headlines that go with doing business in the Congo.

It is under intense regulatory scrutiny; the Swiss Attorney Generals Office (OAG) last week joining the list of ongoing investigations into its conduct in the country.

Last year saw the death of 43 illegal miners on Glencores Kamoto concession, a human tragedy that was compounded by the governments decision to send in the army to forcibly clear the area.

Tesla, though, has evidently decided the risk of not getting enough future cobalt outweighs the potential reputational risks of taking supply directly from the Congo.

Such direct mine sourcing is not the norm for auto companies. They dont, for example, directly buy the iron ore that goes into the steel they use. Or the bauxite that makes the aluminium.

But cobalt is different. Theres not much around and too much of what is around comes from the Congo.

The EV revolution may have been stalled by COVID-19, but the build-out of battery manufacturing capacity has continued uninterrupted.

And with the European Union in particular focusing its industrial stimulus package on green technology, the next EV wave may already be building.

Teslas reluctant commitment to cobalt is a warning sign for other automakers they may have to do the same if they want to be sure theyve got enough of the stuff to meet that coming demand surge.

Elon Musk denies threesome with Amber Heard and Cara Delevingne – Page Six

Elon Musk has denied allegations that he was involved in an alleged three-way affair with his ex Amber Heard and model Cara Delevingne.

The Tesla billionaire gave an exclusive statement to Page Six after astonishing new claims were made in depositions in the defamation case between Heard and her ex-husband Johnny Depp.

It was claimed in legal depositions that Heard, Musk and Delevingne were allegedly involved in a secret three-way relationship in 2016. It was also alleged that Heards affair with SpaceX entrepreneur Musk started before she split with Depp in May of that year.

But the Tesla billionaire exclusively told Page Six of the threesome allegations with the model and actress, Cara and I are friends, but weve never been intimate. She would confirm this.

Also, I wish to confirm again that Amber and I only started going out about a month after her divorce filing. I dont think I was ever even in the vicinity of Amber during their marriage!

Musk continued to Page Six, referring to Depps dogged legal pursuit of Heard following their 2017 divorce, Regarding this lawsuit, I would recommend that everyone involved bury the hatchet and move on.

Life is too short for such extended negativity. Nobody is going to say, after its all over, that they wished the court battle had lasted longer!

Depp filed a $50 million defamation suit against Heard in Virginia in 2019 after she wrote a Washington Post op-ed describing her experience as the victim of domestic violence, without naming him. He is also suing a London newspaper that called him a wife-beater in an opinion piece.

Depp strongly denies any violence against Heard, alleging that her claims are a hoax and he was instead victimized by her.

The Virginia filing describes the couples rocky 15-month marriage, and states that one month after their marriage, Heard was spending time in a new relationship with Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk.

Then on Wednesday, a deposition in the case emerged in which it was claimed that Heard had an alleged three-way affair with Musk and Delevingne.

Josh Drew the ex-husband of Raquel Rocky Pennington, Heards best friend contended in a deposition led by Depps attorney, Benjamin Chew, that Musk, 48, slept with Heard and Delevingne at Depps Los Angeles penthouse in late 2016 following Heard and Depps split.

In a leaked video of Drews deposition, Chew asks, Did Rocky tell you Amber Heard was having an affair with Carla Delevingne while she was still married to Johnny Depp? Drew responds, Yes.

Did she ever tell you in words or substance while Amber was still married to Johnny Depp that the three of them, Amber Heard, Elon Musk and Carla Delevingne, spent the night together? Chew asks, and Drew responds, Yes, adding he cant remember the specific date of the alleged mnage--trois.

The lawyer then contends, So they were having a three-way affair, correct? Drew replies, My understanding, yes.

Delevingne has said she identifies as pansexual. Heard, who has dated both men and women, when asked if she identified as bisexual, responded, I dont identify as anything I like who I like.

A source close to Heard said that she and model Delevingne are longtime friends and it wasnt unusual for them to spend time together.

Reps for Heard declined comment, and a spokesperson for Delevingne didnt get back to us.

Coupa acquires BELLIN, targeting treasury management (Part 2: TMS Market, Competitors and TAM / Market-Sizing Considerations) – Spend Matters

Last week, Coupa made the surprise move to push its business spend management suite into an adjacent space that no other source-to-pay, procure-to-pay or AP automation solution vendor has gone before: the world of treasury and specifically, treasury management systems (TMS).

See initial Spend Matters Nexus and PRO coverage here:

By acquiring BELLIN to compete in the TMS world, Coupa will ostensibly fortify its position in being able to sell to CFOs as much as CPOs with a broader value proposition (including broader-based payment capabilities than all of its procurement/AP/spend peers can support, at least without a TMS partnership and development of new combined process flows).

But beyond the expanded CFO value proposition and B2B payment intersections, theres quite a bit beneath the surface with a TMS that could create additional value propositions linked with transactional procurement, supplier management, risk management, invoicing and payment capabilities.

This Spend Matters Nexus brief provides a quick overview of treasury management system market dynamics, including buyer trends and requirements.

It also offers insight into the competitive positioning of some of Coupas key competitors in this new market segment, including CGI, FIS (Integrity and Quantum), Ion (City Financials, IT2, ITS, Openlink, Reval, Treasura, Wallstreet Suite), Kyriba, GTtreasury (GTreasury/Visual Risk), Oracle and SAP.

Lastly, the brief shares TAM estimates (total addressable market) for the treasury management and B2B payments market.

The final installment of this three-part Nexus series will examine potential competitive landscape implications for Coupas competitors in S2P and P2P, including SAP Ariba, Oracle, Basware, GEP, Jaggaer and Ivalua.

We also will explore the converse: Will treasury management systems providers push into the procurement and spend applications world?

Jason Busch is Managing Partner of Azul Partners Investor Advisory Group. He works with sponsors, CEOs and boards on data-driven due diligence, M&A and strategy. Jason is also the lead author of Spend Matters Nexus, a private newsletter and subscription service. Disclosure: Azul Partners provided due diligence services to Coupa as part of this transaction.

Axele TMS allows small, midsize FTL carriers to improve load planning and communications, increase profit – The Trucker

DALLAS Global optimization intelligence company Optymhas launched a new transportation management software (TMS) designed specifically for small and midsize truckload carriers that operate five to 50 trucks.

Axeleoffers predictive analytics that automate many of a trucking firms core functions including load planning, matching drivers to loads and customer communications to increase revenues and profitability. The software includes a mobile app for drivers that improves communications between headquarters, drivers and customers.

Optym, which has developed optimization solutions for some of the worlds largest and most respected airlines and trucking companies, leveraged its experience and proprietary algorithms to bring an unprecedented level of technology, innovation and optimization to the full truckload industry through Axele.

Small and midsized firms dont have the staff or the budget for costly TMS solutions that arealso difficult to install and maintain, but they have a real need for intelligent solutions that will help them operate more efficiently and make better, more profitable decisions that are based on data, said Vic Keller, CEO of Optym. We took the best of what Optym does for airlines and large trucking companies and created software that is effective, affordable and almost effortless to implement.

The company states that Axeleis affordable, installs in a single day and can be easily used by dispatchers and drivers. In addition, Optym offers a 30-day free trial that allows carriers to test-drive features normally reserved for premium service subscribers. After 30 days, users can continue to use the free standard version of Axele or opt for the professional version, which provides access to the full set of features and functionalities.

In the trucking business, its really easy to lose money if you dont have the right TMS to manage your business, said John Ganiev, owner of Dream Transportation LLC in Allentown, Pennsylvania.I can open up Axele and figure out exactly what is going on in my business by just looking at the dashboard. Axele allows load creation with just two clicks. We also find it very useful regarding compliance. We can make accurate decisions satisfying FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) rules and drivers preferences.

Axele allows dispatchers at smaller FTL carriers to be more efficient and profitable because they can automatically search load boards, such as DAT and TruckStop, to find the most profitable loads that make sense for their company, shippers and drivers. Carriers can also easily connect to electronic logging devices (ELDs), market rates, maps and their internal accounting systems, among other databases. In addition, Axele can help improve driver retention and job satisfaction by finding optimal loads for drivers based on their locations, preferences, deadhead travel and hours of service.

Keeping drivers happy and ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction are very important to carriers, Keller said.Axele allows carriers to improve both, giving all the parties involved dispatchers, drivers and customers better communications and greater visibility into the processes and the ability to trace their loads.

Carriers can communicate seamlessly to drivers via the mobile app on assigned loads as well as invoicing and driver settlements. Axele also provides carriers the ability to communicate with their customers in real time about a loads location and estimated time of arrival, as well as by sharing when and where a truck will be available.

All information is displayed on a live dispatch board, allowing carriers to track and manage all their assets, including drivers, tractors, trailers and loads, in real time. The portal also allows for the monitoring of drivers schedules and notifies planners and dispatchers of driver availability and location.

Archerhub Launches ALVUS TMS to help Carrier Partners Grow their Businesses – GlobeNewswire

DENVER, June 23, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Asset-based digital freight broker Archerhub today announced the availability of the ALVUS Carrier TMS, designed to help its network of carriers automate time-consuming back-office operations and focus on the growth of their businesses.

ALVUS (Archerhub Logistics Value Utilization Solution) features AI-enabled technology designed to automate back-office accounting and management operations, streamlining the manual processes that take away from business development and growth activities. In addition, ALVUS cloud-based collaborative dispatch management platform is designed to bring main stakeholders together and collectively execute the best dispatch option possible regardless of office and truck location.

Small and midsize carriers want to make the best operational decisions but often lack the proper tools to compete with mega-carriers, said Nick Darmanchev, founder and CEO of Archerhub. We get itas a fleet owner myself, I am keenly aware of the challenges that owner operators face in getting bogged down with admin and process. ALVUS was developed specifically to help streamline those processes.

For example, ALVUS can automatically issue permission for trusted drivers to issue their own comchecks or EFS checks for a lumper via the drivers mobile application. When the driver issues a comcheck, the right journal entry is registered on the accounting ledger which releases the accountant from entering a manual journal entry, all while freeing the dispatcher from engaging with the driver about the lumper.

With ALVUS TMS, carriers can book loads, upload the bill of lading and proof of delivery, issue comchecks that auto-populate to the balance sheet and create pay stubs automatically, continued Darmanchev. Automating these processes will help carriers free up dispatchers to work smarter and faster.

Interview: Steve Guttenberg on Into the Dark’s Good Boy, Home for the Holidays, and His Craft – The Mary Sue

Growing up with older brothers meant that I was personally subjected to a lot of movies from the 70s and 80s to fall in love with. In many of those films was Steve Guttenberg. I would eventually find my own Guttenberg comfort movie in Home for the Holidays, but the point is that Steve Guttenberg has a legacy that is impactful, fun, and leaves many of his fans with different movies to talk about.

ThePolice AcademyandShort Circuitstar talked with me about his upcoming project: Good Boy, an entry in Hulus Into the Dark anthology series of feature-length horror stories. In this installment, Guttenberg plays an editor for a local paper that is going digita,l and the excitement for it came from Jason Blum asking and working with Judy Greer!

The Mary Sue: I really enjoyed Good Boy because I thought it was a fun take on the series. I enjoyed that it was a bit more fun, and I really liked your character, as a writer myself. So, I wanted to know what kind of drew you into the Into the Darkseries in the first place and, in particular, this character?

Steve Guttenberg:Well, Jason Blums office called us and asked if I was interested in doing one of his episodes, and I read it and I thought that Aaron and Will Eisenberg did a good job making a derivative idea into something different. And I liked Tragedy GirlsandPatchworkfrom Tyler MacIntyre, and I was really excited about working with a talented actress like Judy Greer, so I accepted the part.

TMS: And yeah, youve been having a really fun kind of (well I guess with my family) resurgence, but we watch Holey Moley, so I also love that this movie, in particular, is more of like a character that is new and refreshing versus the exaggeration of yourself that youre playing on Holey Moley as the diving judge, and so, is that fun to kind of have this new wave of fans recognize your work?

Guttenberg: You know I dont notice any of that. You know, my job is to be creative every day. So I take classes every day: dance, theatre, movement, stage fighting whether its a mask class, singing, or dancing and so my day, since I was twelve years old, has been being creative ten hours a day. An actor can only do what hes offered, and I just look at it as doing my work.

With Holey Moley,I wanted to create an angry character. Im not playing myself at all. Im playing this sort of pompous actor who has a real anger in him for this diver, Joey, which is ridiculous and thats what makes it funny, and then to play Don, which is a supporting role the idea of a supporting role is to make the lead look good. Thats your only job. If you make the lead look good, then youve done a good job being a supporting character. If youre going to play Polonius, you have to make everybody else look goodsame thing with playing Guildenstern. You have to make Hamlet look good. So, my job was to make Judy look good.

TMS: And you do a great job with it.

Guttenberg: Thank you I appreciate it.

TMS: I love both your movies and Judy Greers, so this movie is very exciting, so do you hope that this I feel like the Into the Darkseries has a younger audience who likes horror movies and the series is just a condensed version, do you hope that it kind of brings younger audiences into your older work that they might not have seen yet?

Steve Guttenberg:No, not really. My job is to be the best actor that I can, and its show business. Im part of the show. My job is to act, sing, dance, move, and create a character or characters that support the piece, that serves the play. I have no control over the business, and so I dont pay much attention to it. And I dont pay much attention to the fans because theyre a capricious group. One day they like you, one day they dont. Im sure youve seen it in your writing. Someone might love you and then move on to another writer, so I dont pay much attention to the fans. I think theyre people just like me.

TMS: Thats really interesting because I ask that question a lot and normally theyre like I hope it does this and this maybe thats why because like, I was tweeting about getting to talk to you today and was saying how I have to find some way of bringing up Home for the Holidaybecause thats my favorite comfort movie and I think now that maybe thats why your movies feel that way to people? Because its not so much a I love every single thing Steve Guttenberg has ever done but its, instead, that every character you bring to life has this earnest nature to them.

Guttenberg: Well, I want to bring the truth into everything I do, and thats why we admire actors, because theyre truthful. And that degree of actors are truthful and through that earnestness, I believe that I serve the play and lots of good things can come from that. Its all about creating a part of the painting that the director and producer envisioned. And if you can make it better, then thats great, but I dont focus at all on the result. I dont read reviews. Im just doing my job, and I do my job the best I can.

TMS: Do you think thats something thats important for a lot of creatives to remember now? Because so much of everything is online and what people think and what people are saying instead of just honoring the art and putting your whole self into something rather than worrying about what people are going to say about it?

Guttenberg: Yeah, nothing is stronger than an idea whose time has come. And before its time has come, everybody is against it. If you notice, three years ago Colin Kaepernick went on one knee and was basically fired for it. And now the NFL is walking that back and saying, Maybe we made a mistake. The same as with all the other companies. So, its about when an ideas time has come. So, if you believe in your art, or your cause, considering what other people think is ridiculous. You have to notice the world you live in, but it doesnt matter what anybody thinks because they spend about two seconds on what youre doing and then they move on, but youre spending a lifetime on your cause.

TMS: Thats fascinating because, like you said, its one moment and then its gone, and so much of peoples outrage or commentary on art and movies is for a moment, and then it passes, but its the movies that certain people cling to that have this power. And with actors like yourself, its really fascinating to me because, like I said earlier, you have so many movies that have that resonance and so much of it is because of your approach to acting and your telling of these stories.

Guttenberg: Yeah, you know, of course, you have to be lucky enough to have paints that are beautiful and a canvas that is beautiful and something to paint that is beautiful, and I think that the artist has a signature and thats what creates an icon. Its the expectation and fulfillment of what that artist brings.

TMS: As kind of a final thought (Im very excited for people to watch this), what do you hope to do next when everything calms down and what stories do you want to bring your truth to in the future?

Guttenberg: Oh, I dont know. I really dont know. Im writing a play right now for New York, and hopefully, that gets done. But creatively, I just do the same thing every day. Serve my family and my friends, I take classes and improve my art and my instrument, and enjoy a great quality of life.

Good Boy is out now, and if you like comedy, this is a fun foray into the comedic horror genre with great performances and a fun twisting narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire thing! Definitely check it out, and I, personally, cant wait for more Guttenberg on Holey Moleyor to see that play hes working on!

Making the future of space exploration a more inclusive one – Arizona State University

June 22, 2020

When youre an astronaut, whom do you represent? Do you represent the citizens of the country whose flag is emblazoned on your suit? Or do you represent a larger group of people, all those billions of humans whose lives light up the planet below you?

That was Juan Villoros first question for Cady Coleman, ASUs Global Explorer in Residence and a former NASA astronaut, in Wednesdays virtual Convergence Lab event. ASUs Convergence Lab, a series of events usually held in person in Mexico City, brings together communities across borders to learn from each other with the ultimate goal of building a better, shared North American future.

Villoro, a renowned Mexican journalist, novelist and playwright, spoke with Coleman about her experiences in space, and together the two discussed ways to make the future of space exploration a more inclusive one.

I have my U.S. patch on my sleeve, Coleman said, pointing to the American flag on her uniform. It's hard to say this without sounding like you don't appreciate your home, or the fact that we all come from somewhere. But looking back at the Earth, we're all from the same place were all from there.

Though Mexico doesnt have a national space program equivalent to NASA (the Mexican Space Agency is focused principally on research and education and doesnt send humans to space), the country has a long history of looking toward the stars, Villoro said from Mayan astronomers to present-day visionaries like Alfonso Cuarn, director of the film Gravity, which Coleman consulted on.

When Cuarn won an Oscar for Gravity, many people thought, 'Well, how come a Mexican is so deeply interested in outer space and is so accurate in his redemption of what's going on out there?' Villoro said.

The answer, he said, is because this adventure has been important for the whole human race.

Villoro was 12 when Apollo 11 reached the moon, he remembered, and for my generation that changed the whole idea of the universe.

This shared idea of the universe is a constantly shifting one, Coleman said, especially as we push existing barriers and discover new limits to our knowledge of space, and also incorporate new perspectives into our exploration of it.

What I discovered when I got to go to space was I used to think that we're here on Earth, and then space is somewhere else, and some people go, she said. But actually, Earth and the place that we call home is just bigger than we thought, and just not enough people have been to these edges yet.

Through its School of Earth and Space Exploration and Interplanetary Initiative, ASU is trying to bring more people toward those edges. The ASU-led NASA Psyche Mission, set to launch in summer 2022, for example, offers free online classes that allow people from around the world to participate in the mission.

Villoro and Coleman discussed private-sector participation in space exploration: I would go with whatever vehicle is leaving I really love these additional collaborations, Coleman said; human rights in space: Its a totally new turf, Villoro said, which needs to be solved by the whole community of the Earth; and experiments on the International Space Station: Were learning things in space that really we cant learn down here, Coleman said.

One audience member, a psychology student from Mexico, asked Coleman for her advice to endure the social and physical isolation many of us have found ourselves in over the last several months. Colemans response? Focus on the mission.

READ MORE:Bringing astronaut skills down to Earth to handle isolation

Right now, there are many different important individual and societal missions, Coleman said. One is trying to keep ourselves, our families and our communities safe in the face of a global pandemic. Another is educating ourselves about our roles in systems that perpetuate racial inequality and injustice, and working to change that.

When asked by audience members whether they would jump on the opportunity to go to space again for an important mission, or accept a one-way ticket to Mars, Coleman and Villoro had different answers.

Yes and yes, Coleman said immediately.

I will write about going to Mars, and I will write about somebody who has a single ticket to Mars, but I will never go there, Villoro said, laughing.

The truth is, Villoro, the storyteller, and Coleman, the astronaut, both have equally important roles to fill. Art and storytelling, Coleman said, are crucial to building our future in space.

When people see themselves in a story, in problem solving, then they think, Oh, maybe this could be me, she said.

So whether youre writing a book or directing a commercial or illustrating a cartoon, Coleman urged, Please, please, please include other people that really don't look or feel like you, because they're part of the equation. And by them seeing themselves in your story, it makes all the difference.

In space, said Coleman, the thing that links everyone to each other, despite different government positions or priorities, is the passion for exploration. That passion is what spurred collaboration on the International Space Station, she remembered.

It's always the people between each other that build those bridges, Coleman said.

Those are bridges we can build from anywhere in the universe.
