The Christmas mood gathered multiple hues on the beaches in India #39;s holy city of Puri where internationally known Sand Sculptor Sudarshan Patnaik has made 500 Santa Claus in one cluster that itself makes a world record in the Limca Book of World records. The cluster hosting the Santa Claus sculptures made of Sand and treated with Colours gives an enormous view on the beaches of Puri. Sudarshan and his 30 students have made this huge complex of Santa Claus as an extension of their 2009 creation when they made 100 Santa and entered Limca Book of Records. Apart from Christmas feel, the huge complex gives a green message to the tourists as well. Made to make the tourists feel the mood of Christmas, the complex of 500 Santa Claus has really become a huge attraction. Located on the edge of Bay of Bengal in the eastern Indian coasts, Puri is known as the abode of Hindu god Jagannath. UN to pitch in Rs. 18 crore to clean up Sindhudurg beaches

Mumbai, Dec. 25 -- Soon, tourists visiting the golden and black sand beaches in Sindhudurg district will be able to enjoy a cleaner and pristine walk on the shore.

Starting January 12, the mangrove cell of the forest department will begin its coastal clean-up drive on all 25 beaches in the coastal district as part of a joint project of central government and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The project - Mainstreaming coastal and marine biodiversity conservation into production sectors in the Sindhudurg - costs Rs18 crores and is funded by the UNDP's Global Environment Fund (GEF) and will end in 2016.

Around 4,000 students and volunteers will be involved in the first major coastal clean-up as part of the project. The smaller beaches will have 100 volunteers each and longer beaches will have 200 volunteers each.

"A lot of solid waste and raw sewage gets dumped into the sea on the beaches of Sindhudurg. We want to stress on eco-tourism as part of the project and promote the 25 beaches in the district as a hub for tourism too," said Subir Kumar Ghosh, project coordinator, UNDP.

"There is also a plan to build a marine interpretation centre in the district to highlight the priceless marine life found around Sindhudurg's shores," added Ghosh.

As part of the clean-up drive, the mangrove cell and UNDP will also assess the quantum of waste generated at the beaches in Sindhudurg.

The base-level data on waste generation will be used to adopt fresh measures for collection and disposal of solid waste.

The mangrove cell will be carrying out the clean-up with the help of locals. "The zilla parishad is collaborating on the clean-up drive which is not a one-time activity. We will be drawing up a biodiversity action plan with locals from 185 coastal villages in the district," said N Vasudevan, chief conservator of forests, mangrove cell.

SANIBEL, Fla. - Visit the beaches on this Gulf barrier island and you're likely to see people doing the Sanibel Stoop. That's the term used to describe the bent-at-the-waist posture used to collect seashells on Sanibel Island, which bills itself as one of the best shelling locations in the world.

The island also offers 15 miles (24 kilometres) of beach, 22 miles (35 kilometres) of bike paths and the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the country. While other beach destinations in Florida might attract partying spring breakers or glamorous fashionistas, Sanibel proved to be the perfect spot for a family looking for a quiet beach retreat at the height of spring break revelry. What we didn't find here was nightlife, high rises, chain stores, fast-food burger joints, traffic lights or insects.

Even travel guru Arthur Frommer, who's seen more than a few beaches, has named it a favourite destination, calling it an "idyllic haven of white-sand beaches" with "thousands of birds of every species."

The first sign that we'd hit on something special came soon after we landed at the Fort Myers airport, where tourism kiosks handed out free pocket-sized Lonely Planet travel guides to the area.

The drive from the airport west to Sanibel generally takes less than an hour, but timing is everything. A toll bridge connects Sanibel to the mainland, and the morning rush hour heading on-island and evening rush hour heading off-island can add another 45 minutes onto the trip during high season, which begins mid-January and peaks mid-March through mid-April.

We stopped en route at one of the several Publix markets to stock up on groceries for our rented condo. But it turned out that two markets on the island, Jerry's Foods and Bailey's General Store, will deliver items ordered online to your rental for $25. Groceries also proved largely unnecessary once we discovered the calibre of local restaurants and opted to eat out most evenings. Traders Cafe and Mad Hatter, both innovative and outstanding, took reservations. Others had "call-ahead seating" which put our name on a waiting list ahead of the walk-ins. The rest generally had a wait of up to 30 minutes.

With as many as 30,000 people on the island during high season, biking is the easiest way to get around. But here's a tip: Friends don't let friends ride at night without lights. Knowing that we'd be biking, we brought our helmets (required by law for children under 16), along with small headlights and taillights for our bikes. Even so, with no streetlights on the island and plenty of pedestrians and cyclists on the paths after dark, the trip home proved hairy.

Some hotels provide bikes for their guests and the bike rental shops on the island will deliver and pickup for a fee. It pays to shop around as prices vary. Beach equipment can also be rented.

Golf, tennis and fishing are also popular options on the island, but no trip here would be complete without two things, the beaches and the J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

Over two-thirds of Sanibel is a nature reserve, with the refuge making much of it wonderfully accessible by car or bike. We opted for a 90-minute kayak tour through the mangrove, and almost immediately caught a brief glimpse of a river otter. An assortment of the 230 species of birds on the island from anhingas to woodpeckers kept us busy taking pictures, while our knowledgeable guide pointed out horseshoe crabs, flying mullet and a water snake.

Which the Maya say he told them to build and that this galactic event would take place and be viewable from this exact location on that exact date thousands of years in the past. Happens once every 26000 years and this exact location in the Yucatan was build by the civilization with the most accurate astronomy.
