Cyberpunk 2077 Team is Trying to Set a New ‘Benchmark’ – GameRant

CD Projekt Red's Level Designer Max Pears speaks about how Cyberpunk 2077 plans to be a new benchmark for game development moving forward.

CD Projekt Red clearly has some big plans for the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, possibly even too big as some of these aspirations have likely led to the game's most recent delay. However, if the developer's wishes come true, players may be in for the definitive experience of both this and the next generation of gaming.

This latest news from inside CDPR comes in the form of an interview with Level Designer Max Pears in the latest issue of Edge Magazine, where the developer talked about making Cyberpunk 2077 and the expectations of the company after titles like The Witcher 3. Pears has previously been a source of information for the game, recently revealing the removal ofCyberpunk's wall run feature, and returning to temper players' expectations.

In the interview, Pears comments on how Cyberpunk 2077 is planning on setting a "benchmark" for gaming, relating the upcoming title to how The Witcher 3 had become a definitive representation of open-world titles in its time. With stunning visuals, powered by ray tracing in some versions, it's hard to believe that CDPR's latest title won't make waves when it does finally release. Combine this new aesthetic with the company's history of making immersive open world's, and it becomes apparent why so many players are excited about what the developer might have in store next.

Pears also acknowledged that every game and development studio is always out to advance the industry in their own ways by innovating and pushing each project as far as it can go. However, CDPR's track record makes the designer confident that the company has what it takes to create new benchmarks for developers to strive for with each of these huge, open-world projects. While it may not be a competition between developers, as new Cyberpunk 2077 news comes to light, it seems like this may be the title that is leading the way.

Of course, every developer wants to imagine that their game is the one that will move the industry forward, innovating on ideas that others will take note of and start copy/pasting into every future release. So, Pears claiming that Cyberpunk 2077 will be the benchmark for modern gaming, and the bar to strive for when Next-Gen consoles launch, is nothing new for AAA developers. However, with what has been shown so far about the game's mechanics and player abilities, CDPR's latest project looks to be raising the bar once again for open-world RPGs, even if only slightly.

Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release November 19th, for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a PS5, Stadia, and Xbox Series X version planned for the future.
