Workington Comets owner Laura Morgan believes the team has built a platform for success this season after clinching the Ian Thomas Shield.

Captain Rene Bach lifted the sides first silverware of the season on Sunday after Comets beat Newcastle Diamonds 77-73 on aggregate.

Comets won the first leg 33-27 at Derwent Park on Saturday and a 46-44 loss in the return leg at Brough Park still saw them take the shield.

Morgan said: Its a fantastic start of the season for all the boys. They have built a platform so they can continue throughout the season.

When we went across to Newcastle with only six points I didnt know which way it would go. They did far better than I expected us to do. There was some gutsy riding from all of them.

Comets quest for more silverware gets under way tomorrow when Glasgow Tigers visit Derwent Park in the League Cup.

Workington face home and away ties against Glasgow, Edinburgh and Berwick in their group.

But Morgan is confident of her sides chances ahead of Glasgows visit.
