Why Sicily deserves a place on your travel wish list this year – Travel Daily News International

Luxury-loving travelers, foodies and savvy wine lovers know this there is nothing quite like Sicily, the largest and most diverse island in the Mediterranean Sea.

This sun-kissed island just off Italys toe boasts miles of gorgeous coastline, magnificent architecture, roaring volcanoes, delectable food, excellent wines and historical sites scattered all around. And yet, tourist hordes is not a phrase you are likely to hear in this part of Italy yet to be truly discovered by international travelers.

As pointed out by The Independent, excellent Sicilian wine producer Mandrarossa and luxury vacation-rental company Select Sicily have joined forces to promote the territory of Menfishire, the largest grape-growing region in Sicily, through a partnership that celebrates the areas historical, archaeological and eno-gastronomic value.

Book a trip to this gorgeous Italian island now, then, before the rest of the world does. Here are five great reasons to add Sicily to your travel wish list this year.

Fascinating, multicultural historyFirst inhabited some 10.000 years ago, Sicily is an open-air museum and a joy for history and architecture buffs to visit at any time of the year. It boasts an unparalleled historical legacy, having been occupied by many cultures through the centuries.

Nowhere else in the world have Ancient Romans, Greeks, Byzantines, Carthaginians, Arabs, Phoenicians, Normans, Catalans, Bourbons and French left such a long-lasting mark both physically, in the impressive temples and cathedrals, and in the islands unique culture and traditions. The relics of this rich, fascinating and arguably incomparable past are just one of the many reasons to visit this epic island.

Whether you are more fascinated by Greek amphitheaters, Arabesque domes, Byzantine mosaics, Roman aqueducts or Baroque architecture, sun-kissed Sicily offers a range of archaeological treasures thats not easily matched.

Rich and varied cuisineThe Italian island of Sicily is a delight for anyone who loves fresh, farm-to-table food. As any fan of the Inspector Montalbano TV series already knows, the islands natural resources offer up delicious ingredients, from anchovies, swordfish, red prawns and sea urchins to olives, wild fennel, lemons, oranges, pistachios, almonds, eggplants, pine nuts, grapes and sweet Pachino tomatoes, just to mention a few.

Sicilian cuisine is rich and varied, combining local seasonal produce with flavors bequeathed by Arabs, Greeks, Normans and Spaniards.

Wine, wine and more wineSicily has a long history of viticulture and vinification. One of the major wine towns in Italys Mezzogiorno, Menfi is at the center of a premier wine-growing area, blessed with balmy temperatures and bright, golden-warm sunlight tempered by refreshing sea breezes.

About 350 feet above sea level, the ancient wine-making town of Menfi was designated a DOC region in 1995. The Mandrarossa winery is located in this lovely area, on Sicilys bewitching south-western coast.

Innovative and modern brand Mandrarossa makes sumptuous wines with indigenous grapes sourced from the gently sloping, verdant hills overlooking the glistening Mediterranean Sea, with Tunisias north coast in the distance.

Gorgeous beachesFrom blissful beaches where seafood restaurants serve fish straight off the boat to secluded coves, marine reserves, dramatic rock formations and deserted stretches of virgin sand, Sicily offers sunseekers and beach-lovers a slice of paradise.

Menfis vine-carpeted hills descend right down to the cobalt-blue sea, where theres an amazing array of glorious Blue Flag beaches framed by sweeping dunes. Menfis sandy coastline is still quite unspoilt. A wide, sun-drenched expanse of pretty much deserted golden sand runs for over 10 miles along the coast below this picturesque wine-making center.

Luxury accommodationSicily has become a hotspot for luxury travel. The Mediterraneans most alluring island offers a deliciously large number of deluxe luxury villas with spellbinding sea views. The popularity of villa vacations is on the rise, with more and more high-profile vacationers opting for self-catering villa rentals in exclusive locations.

Based in Castelvetrano, Select Sicily boasts an impressive collection of jaw-droppingly beautiful properties throughout the island. Located in Menfi-Porto Palo, Essence is a top-of-the-range three-bedroom villa which offers a seductive blend of bright, airy interiors, modern contemporary design and postcard-worthy views. It can house up to six guests.

For a larger group, you can head to I Cipressi, a luxuriously finished five-bedroom holiday home in the heart of Menfishire, which sleeps ten people. Its refined interiors, 32-foot long pool and scented Mediterranean gardens make it an ideal luxury retreat to enjoy an unforgettable holiday with your friends and family.

Around the same area is Villa Le Cicale, a modern family summer house which lacks for nothing. Utterly charming in every way, it is a good jumping-off point for exploring sunny Sicilys southwest corner.

Taj Mahal is the most Googled monument in the world – Times of India

One of Indias finest monuments, the world-renowned Taj Mahal tops the list of most Googled landmarks in the world. The Taj Mahal topped the list by beating other important monuments such as the Statue of Liberty, Big Ben, London Eye, Stonehenge, etc. The result has emerged after research was conducted by Columbus Direct, a travel insurance company. The researchers looked at Googles keyword planner, and deduced this.

The Taj Mahal, located in Agra, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known as the Symbol of Love. The study showed that the Taj Mahal has 1417650 monthly searches across the world, beating Machu Picchu in Peru that gets 1269260 monthly searches worldwide.

The Taj Mahal was built in 1632 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, whose wife Mumtaz Mahal is buried in a tomb inside it. The white marble structure attracts people from around the world, including celebrities and heads of states.

Nepals Mount Everest stood seventh in the list, behind UKs Stonehenge, while Americas Statue of Liberty was 8th. The Great Wall of China was ranked 27th in the list, and Mount Fuji stood 35th. The rise of the killer viruses – Economic Times

At the time of writing this piece, the Corona virus has infected 45,000 people with over 1100 deaths and is being described as significantly more virulent than its previous cousin SARS (the current coronavirus has been named as SARS-CoV-2). While in the past our ancestors feared often-fatal bacterial diseases such as diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus, today instead we are afflicted by epidemics of viral diseases such as dengue, chikunguniya and Japanese encephalitis. As the Corona scare pervades our world, it is natural to wonder why it and other deadly virus pandemics such as Ebola and Zika are on the upswing in the new millennium, even as the bacterial epidemics such as plague and cholera that ran rampant in past centuries are close to nonexistent today.

To further emphasize this phenomenon: in recent years, an epidemic of swine flu swept the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan with 33000 documented cases and over 2000 deaths. In previous years, the same virus (H1N1) had claimed the lives of 981 people in 2009 and 1,763 in 2010. Japanese Encephalitis, another viral infection causes an estimated 50,000 cases and 15,000 deaths annually (a mortality rate of 30%). In the early 2000s, the SARS and MERS virus infections claimed hundreds of lives in the South East of Asia as well as the Middle East respectively. These are not numbers to be taken lightly.

Here are some of the reasons for this recent proliferation of lethal viruses. As you will note, several of them have nothing to do with the virus and everything to do with us, the human race

Today healthcare is at a crossroads where legacy infections such as Tuberculosis while somewhat controlled, are not yet completely eradicated, while at the same time new viruses and superbugs are emerging in force. And if that were not enough, we have lifestyle diseases such as cancer, stroke and heart disease that are on the rise in terms of prevalence. We need to keep things in perspective that ultimately the solutions that can deliver the human race from such killers do not require rocket science/scientists but lie in disease prevention by profoundly simple and basic preventive measures such as sanitation, population control, and nutrition. Sadly, however, while we may talk about disease prevention until the cows come home, as the current Corona virus epidemic has highlighted, our actual practical approach to it at a global, national or system level is often divided, contentious and protectionist/nationalistic, much as in the way it is to climate change. Until we get our act together and work as a global community to effect change, we will unfortunately continue to be the victims of killer virus diseases.

Worlds biggest temple to come up in West Bengals Mayapur – Times of India

The Temple of Vedic Planetarium is ready to gain fame as the worlds largest temple. Slated to be completed by 2022, the first-of-its-kind pujari floor of the temple covers one lakh square feet area.

The shrine is situated in Mayapur in Nadia district of West Bengal, it has been decorated with massive chandeliers and modern technology will be used to broadcast puja sessions live worldwide. Mayapur is the headquarter of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).

News has it that the temple construction started two decades ago and more than two crore kilograms of cement have gone into its massive structure. The temple will have one lakh square feet of every floor and what makes it even more beautiful is the largest dome in the world.

The objective behind making this temple is to spread Vedic culture and knowledge throughout the world via a materialised scientific and authoritative platform on the lines of Vedic knowledge. The makers of this 380 ft high temple have used Blue Bolivian Marble to add touches of western architecture to the structure.

Reportedly, a floor will have the capacity to accommodate 10000 devotees at a time. There will be enough space for them to dance, sing and pray before the idol of Lord Krishna as it customarily happens in ISKCON temples.

The idea behind building this shrine is to realise the vision of Acharya Prabhupada of ISKCON, whose wish was to make something that will draw people from all the globe to Mayapur, the birthplace of the renowned Vaishnava saint, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Considering the huge number of tourists that visit Mayapur annually, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee had bestowed the title of a heritage city on Mayapur.

Plan it all out: Nothing kills a globetrotting quest quicker than just getting the first ticket, packing a few things, and seeing how things go. These things can't be done spontaneously. A world traveller needs to research everything about their destinations, plan out the timeframe for their trip, budget out funds based on the demands of each stop, see about health concerns, and more. An organized trip is a successful trip, thanks to fewer unexpected money sinks.

Stick to the cheaper stops: Some places are cheaper than others, though this rarely has anything to do with the "worth" of the destination. North America, Western Europe, Australia, and Japan are some of the most expensive regions in the world, and while there's definitely a ton to see in those places, they aren't the be all end all. If one has a particular inclination towards a certain more expensive place, that's fine, but it will have to result in more careful budgeting elsewhere. Anyway, what's the point of travelling the world if one doesn't find an unexpected favourite place?

Pick the right season: Season affects ticket prices in a big way, but that's only one part of choosing when to travel. With the right scheduling, one can go all the way around the world, and enjoy a warm climate the whole time! While this is pleasant for obvious reasons, there's also the huge benefit of carrying around a lot less in the way of heavy winter gear, which ultimately saves money on luggage fees, on top of the convenience. There's also the question of which direction to take; going eastward is said to have a worse jet lageffect.

Be open-minded about lodging: Travelling around the globe isn't so exciting if every stop entails a perfect hotel room, especially once one sees the bill. Hotels are overrated, and in this modern age, we are blessed with an incredible array of alternatives to lodging. Hostels are cheap, and often surprisingly beautiful nowadays. One can opt for solo quarters, but the adventurous will go for group lodging, and find themselves making a slew of new international friends. Another way to guarantee charming sleeping quarters is by checking out bed and breakfasts, which are absolutely everywhere. When one is staying in the home of a local, it feels a lot more like world travel, and less like a corporate conference.

Craig Thompson discusses how he felt after learning that he had been called up to represent Great Britain at next week’s world championships – Swindon…

SWINDON slider Craig Thompson said he found it surreal to find out he had been selected for Team GB in the countrys 2020 Bob Skeleton World Championships squad.

Thompson finished second in last seasons Intercontinental Cup the second tier of elite bob skeleton competition and comes into the global event having landed 16th at the European Championships and 24th at the first World Cup event of the year.

The 27-year-old will be making his major championships debut in Altenberg, Germany in the coming week as the biggest names from all over the world travel to Saxony to battle it out for a medal.

Though Thompson himself admitted he may not be in contention for a top-10 finish, the Wiltshire athlete was still delighted to have the chance to follow in a line of sliders who hail from the same county as him after Laura Deas and Shelly Rudman.

He said: Its really cool to be selected for the world championships and to represent my country at a major championships on the world stage.

Im pretty happy to be doing that, but its quite surreal to me still because its my first ever major championship as well.

Its so special to me to think that Ive been selected and Im going to a world championship, so Im really, really pleased and over the moon with the call.

Who knew there would be three athletes from Wiltshire representing Great Britain in bob skeleton and going to a world championship and beyond?

As well as Thompsons inexperience of a major championship, the Swindon man has also not felt the ice underneath his sled much at the German track.

The 27-year-old raced the 1413 meter track twice at the beginning of 2018 finishing 11th and 15th during an Intercontinental Cup event.

Thompson is therefore keen to simply enjoy the experience and soak up as much information as he can.

He said: Ive not been to Altenberg much at all really.

Ive had maybe two or three weeks experience at the track, but Ive only raced there competitively once during one of the weeks I was there.

Although Ive only had a limited amount of runs there, Im still feeling good and positive about trying to get my best result of the season.

If I could come in the top-20, or maybe higher, then I would be very happy with that.

But its my first ever major championship, so Im not expecting to set the world alight.

I just want to enjoy the experience and see what the whole event involves.

Single Mom Leaves LA Behind To Trot The World With 11-Year-Old Son – CBS Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) A single mom who used to work in Hollywood left it all behind to travel the world with her 11-year-old son and she says she is doing it without a family fortune, sponsorships or becoming an Instagram influencer.

Crissy Whalin says she had been working in radio and entertainment for 20 years when she was fired five years ago.

For those of you in Hollywood, your job is not always the cure, she said with a laugh from her rented flat in Paris.

At that crossroads, she had a decision to make with her son, and the desire to travel kept coming up. Whalin says she crunched the numbers and decided she and her son Zephyr could do it with her savings of $20,000.

Over the past 18 months, the mother-and-son duo have traveled to 95 cities in 39 countries. Theyve been to every continent except Antarctica.

I just wanted to show that you could do this with a small budget, and what would be the benefits and the rewards that you would find in your life by doing this, if this is something youve always wanted to do, she said.

But how can one trot the globe without a huge monetary cushion? Whalin says they wash their clothes in sinks and cook their own food. They spend about $25 to $85 a night for accommodations, which goes far in some places, but sometimes means a humble place to sleep in others.

The benefit in having no money is that you end up having to live a little bit more local and you end up getting more connected to the local cities that you visit because youre not staying in a resort or an all-inclusive, Whalin said.

Her son continues to take sixth grade classes online, while she earns money with two different companies, booking guests and consulting.

Im showing my son the world, not showing him an extended holiday, she says.

Whalin documents her and Zephyrs adventures on her Instagram account.

Take a Year Off and Travel Without Going Broke – The New York Times

Your car insurance company might let you pause your coverage if you dont plan to drive on your adventure, though it probably wont cover you overseas. Health insurance, on the other hand, is more of an issue. Yes, health care is almost always cheaper overseas than in the United States, but youll be taking a big risk if you forgo insurance. If youre leaving your job, you have 60 days after your employment ends to enroll in a new plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

As far as phone bills go, the free international data roaming on T-Mobile, Sprint and Google Fi might seem attractive, but none of those companies want you roaming for 12 months. You might need to pause your service. Call your provider to verify. In reality, local SIM cards are the way to go, giving you inexpensive local phone calls and data.

The ideal, of course, is to have a job you can do remotely. Many bosses might say no to your working remotely. However, many jobs can be done just fine from afar; you just need to prove you can be productive when not in an office. I suggest trying to work from home a few days a week and expand from there. A word of caution: This is far more difficult than you might imagine. Working from home takes discipline, and working while in a fascinating new city even more so. This may be the dream, but it is far more challenging than the fantasy might appear.

One of the easiest ways to reduce your costs is to work for a hostel. For a few hours a day you can help out the hostel, usually by cleaning or replacing sheets, and in return you can stay there for free. It isnt the most glamorous work, and not every hostel offers it, but imagine doing a bit of housekeeping in the morning then taking the rest of the day to explore some city youve seen only in pictures while spending only a few dollars a day.

Ive met many people who dream about becoming a travel writer or video blogger. When I ask to see what theyve done so far, most shrug and just say its something they want to do. I hate to be harsh, but these people wont succeed. You need to treat it like a job before anyone will pay you to do it. I wrote about travel for my own blog for two years before anyone paid me. If you have a catalog of articles or videos to show a potential editor or sponsor, that goes infinitely further than saying: Well, I think Ill be good at it, maybe. Trust me?

For more income, consider countries with working holiday visas. For Americans under age 30, these are available in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Portugal and South Korea. These special visas allow you to explore a country for up to a year, sometimes two, while working occasionally. Theyre not meant as a back door to staying permanently, only to aid in making some money during extended travels. If you are still a student or a recent grad or open to teaching, there are more options.

Make sure you have a credit card that doesnt charge international fees. Wirecutter, the New York Times company that reviews products, recommends several that also have no annual fees. Cash is becoming less necessary in many countries, but having an A.T.M. card that reimburses A.T.M. fees is an added bonus. NerdWallet has a detailed look at some options. I have a card through Schwab that requires you to also open an investment account, but both are free and you can use just the checking account, if you want.

Did you set some travel goals as part of your New Year's resolutions for 2020? If not, it's not too late.A new year and decade bring new ways to experience the world, says Dora Ball, editor of Travel Goals, (Lonely Planet, $25). Travelers today are not as interested in ticking off a load of sites far away. Theyre more interested in travel as self-discovery. She shares ideas for rewarding journeys and encounters with USA TODAY.

In our always-connected age, the lure of remote places is growing, Ball says. It gives you an opportunity to re-evaluate your lifestyle habits, and escape from social media. Instead of talking to hotel employees and tour guides, see how local residents spend their daily lives, Ball says. For all the amazing sites in the world, meeting real people and spending time in their home can have a great effect on us. She suggests a homestay in Orjan, a village near Amman, Jordan. You become a part of the family for a night or two. You might help with the daily chores, and the money you pay is going directly to that community.

One of the best ways to understand the culture of a place is through a local trade or craft, which offers a window into its history and values, Ball says. Thats what draws many to a weeklong boatbuilding course in Brooklin, Maine, which teaches the basics of design as students construct a wooden sailing skiff from scratch.

With low-cost air travel, its simple to cross continents in mere hours, but why not do it the old-fashioned way: on the ground? If you've got the time, you could spend months driving the length of Africa from Cairo to Cape Townortraveling the Silk Road, the ancient trade route that connected Southern Europe to Asia, Eastern Africaand the Middle East. Or considerdriving the Pan-American Highway, which connects Argentina to Canada. The journey is the goal, being open to what you see along the way. Its the ultimate education in the world, Ball says.

Coronavirus News: Live Coverage and Updates – The New York Times

Communist Party ousts provincial leader at the center of the outbreak.

Chinas ruling Communist Party fired the leader of the province at the center of the new coronavirus outbreak on Thursday amid widespread public anger over the handling of the epidemic.

Jiang Chaoliang, the party secretary of Hubei Province, is the highest-ranking official to lose his job over the handling of the coronavirus outbreak, which has killed more than 1,100 people in recent weeks.

Mr. Jiang will be replaced by Ying Yong, the mayor of Shanghai. The selection of Mr. Ying may underline the continued political control of Xi Jinping, Chinas top leader. Before being transferred to Shanghai in a fairly senior role in 2008, Mr. Ying had come up through the political ranks in Zhejiang Province, which is Mr. Xis political base as well.

After the outbreak first emerged in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, the leadership came under intense scrutiny for playing down the virus and delaying reports of its spread. The province then took drastic measures that included imposing a lockdown not only on Wuhan but also on tens of millions of people in surrounding areas.

For hospitals in Wuhan, already overwhelmed with patients, that cordon worsened a shortage of medical supplies that has continued.

A surge in new cases and deaths as diagnostic tools expand.

Early on Thursday, officials announced that nearly 15,000 new cases and 242 new deaths were recorded in a single day in Hubei Province, the center of the coronavirus outbreak, largely because the authorities there had expanded their diagnostic tools for counting new infections.

Until now, only infections confirmed by specialized testing kits were considered accurate. But those kits have been in such short supply and so many sick people have gone untested that the authorities in Hubei have started counting patients whose illness have been screened and identified by doctors.

The result was a sudden and large spike in the overall tally for the coronavirus: more than 1,300 people killed and well over 50,000 infected.

The change in how cases are counted is only one factor that has made it difficult for experts to determine the true scale of the epidemic. In fact, the shifting landscape of how infections are defined and confirmed has led to significant variations in the estimates for the extent of outbreak.

As Japan announced 44 new coronavirus cases on a cruise ship quarantined in the waters off Yokohama, bringing the total to 218, the countrys health minister said on Thursday that the authorities would begin allowing some passengers to disembark and serve out the remainder of the quarantine period on shore.

The minister, Katsunobo Kato, said that, if they first test negative for the virus, passengers 80 or older, those with existing medical conditions and those assigned to cabins without windows or balconies would be taken to facilities for confinement until the quarantine is scheduled to end on Feb. 19. Those who test positive will be taken to hospitals.

Of the newly confirmed cases, Mr. Kato said, 43 were passengers and one was a crew member.

The cruise ship, the Diamond Princess, arrived in Yokohama on Feb. 3, and passengers were expecting to go home the next day. But after learning that a man who got off the ship in Hong Kong had tested positive for the coronavirus, the Japanese government quarantined all 3,700 passengers and crew members on board. The quarantine period is scheduled to last for two weeks.

Separately, the Cambodian government said on Wednesday it would allow another cruise ship, the Westerdam, to dock in Sihanoukville. The ship had been denied permission to stop in Japan, Guam, Taiwan and the Philippines, despite having no diagnoses of coronavirus.

The Dalai Lama has canceled his public events because of the coronavirus outbreak, his office says.

As a precautionary measure, in view of the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak, all engagements of His Holiness the Dalai Lama remain indefinitely postponed, a statement says.

Updated Feb. 10, 2020

On March 9, the Dalai Lama was scheduled to appear at a teaching event in Dharamsala, India.

No other events appear on the schedule.

The Dalai Lamas office has also issued an appeal, urging Tibetans across the world to collectively pray for the speedy resolution to the crisis and the well-being of humanity.

The coronavirus outbreak has infected more than 45,000 people in Asia, according to statements from health officials. India, where the Dalai Lama lives, has at least three confirmed cases so far, according to the World Health Organization.

A big tech show has been canceled.

One of the worlds biggest technology trade shows was canceled on Wednesday as the coronavirus outbreak continued to disrupt the global business calendar.

Every year since 2006, Mobile World Congress has drawn representatives of major tech companies to Barcelona to gather in giant conference halls to launch products, hobnob with industry luminaries and discuss deals and partnerships. The event typically draws more than 100,000 attendees from nearly 200 countries across the world. This years event was scheduled to begin later this month.

But on Wednesday, the industry group that organizes the trade show, the Global System for Mobile Communications Association, said it was canceling the event because of the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances.

The cancellation of the show became inevitable when major companies including Nokia, Ericsson and Vodafone pulled out. The association had announced safety measures to try to keep the show on track, including not admitting people who had been to affected parts of China.

Last year, Mobile World Congress carried political significance when the U.S. government sent a delegation to warn wireless companies against using equipment sold by the Chinese tech giant Huawei.

Canceling the event is a blow to the city of Barcelona, which has hosted the conference for years and enjoys a strong economic boost from the thousands of attendees putting their company expense accounts to work at restaurants, hotels and corporate events.

United Airlines said Wednesday that it would not resume flights connecting the United States with mainland China and Hong Kong until April 24, extending an earlier suspension, after a similar announcement by American Airlines.

Demand for such flights declined sharply in late January as concern over the severity of the coronavirus outbreak began to take hold, according to data from the Airlines Reporting Corporation, an industry-owned transaction clearinghouse.

In the first few weeks of January, sales of tickets from the United States to mainland China were down slightly compared to the same weeks the year before, but by the fourth week of January, demand was down 59 percent year over year. Ticket refunds that week were up 534 percent, according to data based on 1.8 million tickets sold in January 2019 and 2020.

Some of the coronavirus testing kits sent to states have flaws and do not work properly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Wednesday.

The C.D.C. began sending the kits to states to allow them to conduct their own testing and get results faster than they would by shipping samples to the C.D.C. in Atlanta. The failure of the kits means that states still have to depend on the C.D.C., which will delay results by several days.

On trial runs in some states, the kits produced results that were inconclusive, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said at a news conference on Wednesday.

Dr. Messonnier told reporters that the kits had been sent to 30 other countries as well, but said later Wednesday that she was mistaken.

There have been 13 confirmed cases of the infection in patients in the United States so far.

What was supposed to be a short detour on her way to begin another semester of studies in Australia has turned into an anxious limbo for one Chinese student when that country joined others in banning travelers arriving from mainland China.

Now, Iris Yao must wait on Jeju Island, off the coast of South Korea. According to the current regulations, she cannot make her way to Australia until she has been out of China for at least 14 days. Alone in a foreign country and made to feel like a pariah has left Ms. Yao, 22, depressed and frustrated.

She is one of tens of thousands of Chinese travelers whose plans have been upset by rapidly changing regulations thrown up across the region as the coronavirus has spread.

Ms. Yao arrived on the resort island last month for a short stay on her way back to her university in Sydney, Australia, from her hometown in Zhoushan, China. Since then, she has been virtually marooned on Jeju Island, known for its white sand beaches and volcanic landscape.

It might be slice of paradise, but she has not found it relaxing. Instead of the warm welcome once extended to wealthy Chinese tourists, the islands locals have met Ms. Yao and other Chinese visitors with worry, discrimination and fear.

Some restaurants on the resort island have banned Chinese citizens. Employees at one asked her not to speak Mandarin while eating there, fearing she would scare away customers.

The fear toward the virus is everywhere, she said. I think its unfair for all Chinese citizens; they are not allowed to go into restaurants or cannot speak Mandarin.

London is experiencing its first case of coronavirus, the British authorities said on Wednesday.

The patient, who is the United Kingdoms ninth case, contracted the virus in China and is being treated at Guys and St Thomas Hospital in London.

Britain has confirmed nine cases of coronavirus infections, with five believed to be linked to a British businessman who may have contracted the virus in Singapore. The man, Steve Walsh, is believed to be the cause of five additional cases in France.

On Wednesday, Mr. Walsh released a statement saying he has been released from the hospital and returned home, even as public health officials continue to try to trace the contacts of some of the people he is believed to have infected.

The strategic incident director of Britains National Health Service, Prof. Keith Willett, said Mr. Walsh had developed only mild symptoms of the virus and had made a full recovery.

He is no longer contagious and poses no risk to the public, Professor Willett said in a statement. He is keen to return to his normal life and spend time with his family out of the media spotlight.

The Chinese authorities have approved a broad strategy for trying to bring the coronavirus outbreak under control while restarting economic production, state news outlets reported Wednesday evening.

President Xi Jinping ordered that tax cuts be drafted and put into effect.

Premier Li Keqiang, the countrys No. 2 official, and the countrys cabinet called for major construction projects to begin across the country as soon as possible.

State-owned enterprises were told to cut rents. Banks were ordered to keep interest rates low.

City governments were told to make sure that workers who went home for the Lunar New Year holiday could reach their jobs.

The two most powerful political bodies in China the Standing Committee of the Communist Party Politburo and the governments cabinet of ministers each issued similar orders. Both groups produced hints of the fairly broad stimulus program that many economists expect soon.

None of the announcements directly addressed the difficult balancing act that China now faces: how to put more than 700 million workers back on the job without creating conditions that could allow the virus to spread.

The Ministry of Education in China instructed schools on Wednesday to find ways to keep the countrys 190 million primary and secondary students busy during the suspension of the school year, but it discouraged any significant efforts to provide classes online.

In a notice posted on its website, the ministry urged provincial school administrators to draw up detailed study plans for students who, like everyone else, are largely confined to their homes.

The ministry encouraged reading and physical exercises and, if possible, online tutoring, though it also warned that primary-school students especially should not spend too much time online. It also announced that special programing on Chinas national education television channel, CETV 4, would begin next week; the network had a similar role during the SARS epidemic in 2003.

The coronavirus epidemic that began in Wuhan has now thrown the countrys schools and universities into chaos. Some provinces, including Liaoning and Sichuan, plan to reopen primary and secondary schools on Feb. 17, at least for now, while others have already postponed the school year until at least March, including Shanghai, Zhejiang and Guangdong.

The delays could have the greatest impact on those students preparing for the major national exams for high school and college held at the end of spring.

The United States will allow nonemergency consulate employees in Hong Kong and their families to leave because of the coronavirus outbreak, a State Department official said on Wednesday.

The decision to allow voluntary departures was made in response to continuing uncertainty surrounding the outbreak and practical considerations such as school closings, the official said.

The consulate in Hong Kong will remain open and continue to provide regular services.

A similar decision was made to allow nonemergency State Department personnel and their families to leave mainland China in late January.

The State Department chartered flights and evacuated about 850 people from Wuhan, where the outbreak began late last year, including employees of the United States Consulate in the city.

Hong Kong has 50 confirmed coronavirus cases and one death. The State Departments travel advisory for the city is at Level 2, the second-lowest of four levels, and recommends that visitors to Hong Kong exercise increased caution because of the outbreak.

This month, the warning for mainland China was raised to 4, the highest level.

Do not travel to China due to the novel coronavirus, it said.

The coronavirus outbreak in China has generated economic waves that are rocking commodities markets and disrupting the supply networks that act as the backbone of the global economy.

In Australia, after hauling hundreds of thousands of tons of iron ore to China, returning freighters can face a 14-day quarantine.

One of the worlds largest copper mining companies, BHP, has been in talks to possibly delay shipments to Chinese ports.

And China is turning back deliveries of liquefied natural gas, potentially disrupting shipments from Qatar to Indonesia.

Were seeing a rippling out, said Ed Morse, global head of commodities research at Citigroup in New York. And we dont see it stopping.

Prices for key industrial raw materials such as copper, iron ore, nickel, aluminum and liquid natural gas have plummeted since the virus emerged.

And manufacturers, mining companies and commodity producers of all stripes are weighing whether they will be forced to cut back on production for fear of adding to a growing inventory glut.

Airbnb will suspend bookings in Beijing until May 1, the company said on Wednesday.

The decision was made in accordance with guidance issued by the government to all companies in the short-term rental industry, a spokesman for the company said. He added that existing reservations would be refunded.

Airbnb has also waived cancellation fees for travel to and from mainland China until the end of February. Travelers who had booked stays in Hubei, the province at the center of the outbreak, can cancel reservations without charge until April 1.

The company had continued to accept reservations throughout China during the busy travel season before and after the Lunar New Year holiday, even as the government started to lock down cities and impose road restrictions to stop the spread of the virus.

The company also said it would set aside $10 million to support hosts in the next few years, during the recovery period of the local tourism industry.

Reporting and research was contributed by Amber Wang, Zoe Mou, Albee Zhang, Yiwei Wang, Claire Fu, Amy Qin, Sui-Lee Wee, Steven Lee Myers, Keith Bradsher, Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs, Matt Phillips, Austin Ramzy, Tiffany May, Elian Peltier, Yonette Joseph, Megan Specia, Heather Murphy, Iliana Magra, Niraj Chokshi and Ceylan Yeginsu.

Small Luxury Hotels of the World release luxury travel trends for 2020 – Travel Daily News International

Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) has released its annual Luxury Travel Trends Report, looking ahead at what will be shaping the luxury boutique experience in the coming year. From bio-architecture and conscience-free cuisine to dispersed hotels and ultimate relaxation methods, the report has been crafted from the creative, inspiring and novel elements introduced by the luxury brands more than 520 independent hotels that together reflect the emergence of a movement or burgeoning trend. For 2020, these small, nimble and progressive hotels continue to set the standard for luxury in the ever-changing travel landscape. The full report is available to view and download at http://www.slh.com.

Jean-Francois Ferret, CEO at Small Luxury Hotels of the World says: SLH has been the trailblazer for small independent hotels and we champion the imaginative and diverse voices that help shape our collective and bring inspiration to the world of wanderlust. As we celebrate three decades as the pioneer of boutique in 2020 we are delighted to share these insights and in doing so praise our hotels that continue to bring the most individual, intimate and intense travel experiences to our discerning guests.

The full report outlines six specific overarching themes reinforced by the idea of uncomplicated and honest luxury. Travellers are looking to embrace pared back extravagance by interacting with local cultures, respecting nature and participating in something that feels bigger than themselves.

Conscious LuxuryExamples of bio-architecture, conservation projects, widespread plastic-free initiatives and of course those hotels striving for carbon neutrality are the highlight. As a global company, SLH will be launching a Sustainability Manifesto in 2020 laying out commitments for SLH as a business as well as guidance for our member hotel, however, many of our hotels have long been operating with a conscience. Aleenta Resort and Spa Hua Hin in Thailand champions carbon-free cooking. Harbour Village Beach Club in Bonaire, allows guests who dive to learn how to hang and maintain corals and become PADI certified in coral restoration. Lefay Resorts in Lake Garda and the Dolomites have been offsetting CO2 emissions since 2013 and akaryn Hotel Group will become a single-use plastic free hotel group in 2020.

Dispersed HotelsDispersed Hotels offer a new way to experience a hotel and a destination by spreading the areas out across buildings in one small town or village, naturally creating a unique micro-community for guests and locals. Enzo Ango Fuya II in Kyoto is Japans first ever dispersed hotel. Blending in with the rhythm of the city, each of the 5 buildings, dotted around one street, has its own particular style, features and functionality. San Canzian Village & Hotel in Buje, Croatia, opened in June 2019 and has been created on the ruins of an ancient medieval village providing an authentic experience of the lesser-known Istrian countryside and Le Refuge de la Traye in Meribel, France, opened in December with eco-luxury chalets creating a hotel hamlet. Domaine des Etangs may look like a typical chateau, but with rooms scattered around the entire estate in separate farmhouse buildings, guests can create their own bespoke experience.

Upskilling EscapesUpskilling Escapes offer real once-in-a-lifetime experiences, granting travellers VIP access to specialists in an effort to learn new skills, or become experts themselves. Guests at Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay can learn about the islands precious Neptune grass with a National Geographic presenter. Olympic skier Andrew Weibrecht is available as an exclusive ski guide to hotel guests down the slopes of Whiteface Mountain at Mirror Lake Inn Resort & Spa in the 1980 Winter Olympic resort of Lake Placid, New York. Recently opened in November 2019, The 121 Hotel in Nashville curates private songwriter sessions for guests to listen to songwriters talk about hit songs they penned for legendary country singers.

Wellness from Ahh to ZzzIndigenous spa practices and rituals such as hay baths, volcanic mud and Ayurvedic therapies are on the rise, while the importance of sleep and innovative solutions to achieve optimum rest continue to be key for overall health and wellbeing. Casa Madrona Hotel & Spa in California is the first hotel to introduce a sleep fitness programme leveraging innovative technology, Le Grand Bellevue in Gstaad, Switzerland, will host an overnight Bamford B Silent Sleep Retreat combining guided wellness techniques with targeted treatments while Mind Therapy at Rockliffe Hall, UK, provides the ultimate power nap using foundational Spa.Wave therapy.

The Root Back to Real FoodFor foodies, the emergence of Unexpected Herbivores, plant-based restaurants in surprising places, and the ongoing benefits of going herbal are rising in popularity. In addition, white charcoal, or binchotan, is being incorporated into food and drink across menus worldwide to absorb impurities and release vital minerals. The Prince Akatoki London and Mykonos Riviera Hotel & Spa both utilize Chikutan Sticks made from sustainably derived white charcoal for cocktails at their bars to purify and elevate the taste. Hotel de la Ville in Monza, Italy, includes white charcoal in a variety of fusion dishes in the Derby Grill restaurant to aid digestion.

Destinations to WatchNew destinations for SLH guests in 2020 include several new members opening their doors for the very first time. Gangtey Lodge in Bhutan, one of the only carbon-negative countries in the world, lures active travellers while cultural enthusiasts appreciate its traditions unhindered by outside influences. Nepal is gearing up to celebrate Visit Nepal in 2020 and in December the Lost Horizon Resort & Spa Begnas is scheduled to open near Pokhara. Azerbaijan is a perfect combination of European, Asian and Middle Eastern influences that make The Land of Fire a fascinating place to explore from Dinamo Hotel Baku. Tel Aviv, Israel sees new flight routes from American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways World Club Suite and The Norman Tel Aviv is the citys only luxury boutique hotel. Money saver while globe-trotting the world TRAVEL UNION – Baltic Times

How to globe-trot and not lose on international banking transaction fees and exchange rates? TRAVEL UNION, a Lithuania-based company, has the answer. The Baltic Times Magazine met with RamanoKorneu, CEO of the company, to learn more.

What was the start of TRAVEL UNION?

Our project appeared in 2018 in response to the problems that currently exist in the travel industry when travellers use the services of classical banks and different loyalty programmes. Every year more and more people travel abroad (by 2020, there will be about 1.6 billion tourists in the world annually visiting foreign countries) and usually lose quite a lot of money on international transaction fees and exchange rates, not to mention awkward services. Moreover, many travellers rarely choosethe same travel agencies, stay in the same hotels, tend to use various flight options, resulting in millions of loyalty programme cards for hotels and airlines in their pocket or device. Quite often points earned by them just burn out before they can beused. Therefore, the decision, in which you have one card that allows you to pay everywhere without commissions, send money in different currencies and at the same time earn non-burning and widely-convertible travel loyalty points seemed very timely.

The real action started when the professionals in finance, tourism and IT gathered together. The combination of knowledge and experience gave birth to a great business model and product concept.

What do you believe makes your product particularly attractive?

Travel Union was planned not just as a mobile banking app for customers, but as a single ecosystem for travellers and travel partners. This model gives us the opportunity to offer our clients the lowest cost possible, the best travel offers in the market and at the same time to participate in our unified loyalty program #Time. Our loyalty program #Time is unique because the points are non-burning and can be converted into cash, great offers of our partners, and points of other loyalty programs - so it is a great incentive to use particularly our mobile banking app.

The main advantage of all our products, mobile banking, online banking for business - they are extremely convenient to use, money-saving and secure.

One of the key elements of our ecosystem is our own payment system, which will allow us to overcome the limitations of off-the shelf payment gateways(high sign-up costs and fees for every transaction, inability to customize and add new features, etc.)and which we will be able to offer as a product to our travel partners and other merchants.

Who is your average client?

Our mobile banking app is created for families with children, travellers, and busy people. They are tech-savvy and cost-conscious that is why they would rather choose a digital bank with a convenient and intuitive app offering basic services for free than a traditional bank.

Our remotely on-boarded kid's accounts and free payment cards with parental control will allow parents to teach their kids about money in an increasingly cashless society and will help in a family routine. In other words, we build the product according to our pain points and willingness to help other families, who usually experience the same problems raising kids.

From the corporate side our clients are companies of the travel industry: hotels, airlines, travel agencies, online marketplaces, excursion companies, duty free shops etc. In order to create a strong merchant network and ensure high processing volume we are going to offerthem all the benefits of a travel-specialised payment system.

Has the year 2019 been successful to TRAVEL UNION in terms of growth and what are you aiming at in 2020?

2019 was essential for the growth of our business we took a big step from the development of an innovative and unique concept and building a scalable technology-based business model towards a well-equipped and adequately-prepared business ventureready for launch.

Asfortechnologicalpartnership, in 2019 wesigned contracts with proven technology service providers offering high-tech solutions for fintech companies and created a well-tuned operating model.

In the beginning of 2020, the focus will be placed on pilot testing of the mobile application and on-line bank for legal entities to see how people use the product and make necessary adjustments.

The beginning of 2020 will also be marked by obtaining the Electronic Money Institution license in Lithuania and acquiring early customerstravel partners and travellers using a broad partners network. We aim toget as many as 50 thousand retail customers on board and over 100 of travel-related legal entities over the year. Weall see huge opportunities that we do not want to miss!

Treehouses, Glass Igloos and Other Out-of-This-World Spots to Lay Your Head – The New York Times

Gone are the days when a hotel meant simply a bed, a desk and perhaps a minibar. A new wave of accommodations has bumped traditional lodging out of the way by offering unique experiences that are endlessly, irresistibly Instagrammable. Want to cozy up in a glass igloo to watch the Northern Lights? Or hang on for dear life from the side of a cliff in a transparent capsule? You can do all that these days for a price, of course.

Africa is dotted with luxurious safari lodges for guests who want to get as close as possible to the continents incredible animal life. But some get you closer than others. At Mfuwe Lodge in Zambia, 18 chalets are arranged around two large lagoons, creating the perfect setting for watching elephants as they visit in the late afternoons.

But Africa isnt the only continent to offer such close encounters of the animal kind. The Jungle Bubbles, at the Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort in Bangkok, offers resort guests the chance to spend a night in a transparent bubble, witnessing elephants pass by.

But if you live in the United States, you dont have to travel far to get close to animal life. At the Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, N.Y., guests can reserve one of a handful of tiny houses and mingle with some of the 800 farm animals rescued from abuse and mistreatment.

Mfuwe Lodge, from $400 per person; Jungle Bubbles, doubles from $567 plus resort costs; Farm Sanctuary, doubles from $275 per night.

Regardless of where you are in the world, theres a good chance you can stay in a treehouse-style accommodation. At Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge in the Amazon region of Brazil, guests can find themselves cocooned in the canopy of the Amazon, high above the Rio Negro river. Up in the tall trees of the pine forests of Northern Sweden, the Treehotel posits guests in mirrored cubes and cabins perched in the treetops, one of which is even shaped like a U.F.O.

On the edge of Kruger National Park in South Africa, the new &Beyond Ngala Treehouse opens this month, giving guests a chance to take a game drive out to the treehouse where they spend the night up high in the bush in a private tower. A different kind of treehouse greets guests in Costa Rica at Hotel Costa Verde, where a decommissioned airplane was reconstructed in the jungle canopy, so that guests actually sleep in a plane in the jungle canopy. But some travelers want to go even higher than the treetops. At Skylodge Adventure Suites in Peru, guests arrive either by hiking over 1,300 feet or 400 meters up, or by zipping in like a superhero on a series of zip lines. The rooms themselves are transparent capsules hanging on the side of a mountain with panoramic views of the Sacred Valley.

Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge, from $325 per person for a panoramic suite; Treehotel, doubles from $540; &Beyond Ngala Treehouse, from $695 per person; Hotel Costa Verde, doubles from $260; Skylodge Adventure Suites, from $467 per person with transport.

Not into heights? You can always go deep thanks to lodging options that offer an underwater experience. At Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, guests can reserve the Muraka, a two-level hotel room that includes an infinity pool and also reaches 16 feet below sea level. At The Manta Resort, off the coast of Pemba near Zanzibar, a butler boats out to meet guests on their private underwater island. And in Key Largo, Fla., travelers with scuba certifications can dive down for a stay at Jules Undersea Lodge.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, from $9,999; The Manta Resort, doubles from $1,900 per night with three night minimum; Jules Undersea Lodge, singles from $675.

A new group of hotels that have cropped up in some of the worlds coldest places provides travelers the chance to experience hygge, the Danish concept of cozy contentment. At Cielo Glamping Maritime in New Brunswick, Canada, guests can cuddle up inside domes nestled in the forest, with clear sides for views of the snowy sunsets. Want to see the Northern Lights but dont want to feel cold? Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in Finland is designed for you. Featuring glass igloos (for lying in bed to watch the lights) and snow igloos (caves dug out of a snow bank), it's the perfect place for fancy snow bunnies.

If you find yourself in the middle of the Gobi desert, stay warm under a camel-hair blanket in a traditional Mongolian tent (called a ger) at the eco-lodge, the Three Camel Lodge.

Cielo Glamping Maritime, doubles from $311 for two nights, Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, glass igloos from $566; Three Camel Lodge, tents with full board, activities, and transfer from $1,000 per person.

And if animals, treehouses or the cold really arent appealing, you can always settle for royalty. You may have heard of the famed Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai, India, the landmark hotel that since 1903 has signified luxury tourism. But you might not know that in Jaipur, India, you can reserve a room in a palace once home to the citys maharajah, Sujn Rajmahal Palace. And for some British royalty vibes, check into The Newt in Somerset, where you can roam the grounds of the manors English gardens and sip tea in your castle. Or for Scandinavian style galore, try Nimb Hotel in Copenhagen, a 1909 castle with exteriors inspired by Moorish architecture.

DUBLIN, Feb. 10, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The "Car Rental Market Research Report: By Vehicle Type, Channel, Purpose, Usage, Geographical Outlook - Global Industry Analysis and Forecast to 2024" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

Research and Markets Logo

The World Travel and Tourism Council reported that in 2018, a growth of 3.9% was witnessed by the global travel and tourism industry. It created more than 319 million jobs worldwide and amassed $8.8 trillion in 2018. This massive growth in the industry also boosted the growth of other related industries, such as car rental.

Nowadays, tourists prefer renting cars to explore a new place as it gives them the flexibility of planning their own itinerary without the fear of relying on public transport system. Car rental services allow customers to travel to their choice of places as per their convenience.

Further, the rising disposable income has also established the trend of more people taking short trips. Rather than taking their own vehicle, customers prefer renting cars; airport rentals are the most common as tourists rent a car immediately after landing in a new country and keep the car with them for the whole duration of their stay or drop them off at convenient drop-off points.

Witnessing a 7.9% CAGR, the car rental market is expected to generate a revenue of $122.6 billion in the coming years.

Car rental services are offered via three different vehicle types: luxury, executive, and economy. During 2014-2018, the economy vehicle type was used the most for car rental services. These cars are inexpensive and are smaller in size and have a seating capacity of four to five persons. Being smaller in size, these cars have a high fuel efficiency, which makes them a suitable option for rental services.

Further, amidst growing environmental concerns, these cars are witnessing a high demand as their impact on the environment is not as severe as other cars. In the coming years, the luxury cars are predicted to register a faster growth in demand, as the global disposable income is improving. These cars offer superior performance, comfort, and have better configuration.

One of the key trends in the car rental market is the deployment of electric vehicles for rental purposes. In wake of rising concerns about vehicular emission, governments of many countries are bringing in stringent regulatory policies to cut down on such emissions. From offering subsidies and incentives to creating awareness about the harmful effects of conventional energy sources on the environment, governments and various organizations are working toward popularizing the use of electric vehicles.

In Europe and the U.S., one of the rental companies, Sixt SE offers fully electric cars in the luxury segment, such as BMW i8, BMW i3, tesla Model X, and Tesla Model S. In India, in 2018, Zoomcar India Pvt Ltd. entered into a partnership with Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd for the deployment of electric cars for rental purposes.

The popularity of the internet has resulted in the development of the online or digital car rental system, which is helping the car rental sector become more organized. Online car rental allows the consumers to shortlist the car of choice, and make bookings well in advance without the hassle of visiting the office.

Further, majority of the companies have their own applications, which can be used by consumers to avail any assistance that they may need throughout the rental period. Therefore, the digitization of the car rental process has made it much safer, transparent, and cost-effective, which has been instrumental in making these services popular.

Upon completion of a three-year makeover, Atlantis, the Palm has reported record-breaking 2019 with an average occupancy of 90 per cent.

This increase in visits is a result of strong footfall from top source markets, as well as from diversified markets, and is in line with the tourism strategy set out by Dubai Tourism.

Significantly bookings from the UAE were up by 39 per cent, while Norway experienced a 24 per cent growth in bookings, China an increase of 16 per cent and Russia 14 per cent.

Closer to home, bookings from Saudi Arabia surged by 25 per cent, while bookings from the rest of the resorts top markets, including the UK, USA and India, remained robust.

Ahead of Expo 2020 we undertook a programme that has updated our property with contemporary flair, while staying true to the propertys iconic heritage.

Revamped and revitalised, it has been stylishly upgraded, while still keeping the soul of Atlantis alive, said Timothy Kelly, managing director, Atlantis Resorts & Residences.

We are maintaining our focus on customer needs and demands, and constantly evolving, ensuring that each and every experience is unique, with all our visitors making memories that last a lifetime.

Dubai welcomed 16.73 million visitors in 2019, with Atlantis, the Palms diversified portfolio ensuring that more than half a million of these visitors checked into the iconic resort.

With Dubai Expo 2020 projected to attract 25 million visitors over a period of six months, more than 70 per cent of visitors will be coming from outside the UAE, which will have a significant effect on Dubais hospitality industry and Atlantis, the Palm is ready for the influx.

With Dubai attracting more than 16 million tourists in 2019, more than half a million of these opted to stay at or visit Atlantis, The Palm, which is testament to the hard work that has been put in to revitalise the resort.

We fully expect the year ahead to be a buoyant one and we are looking forward to welcoming even more tourists in 2020, said Kelly.

Last year was transformative for the Atlantis, the Palm.

The hotel saw the completion of the refurbishment programme that has refreshed the entire resort.

Following a vigorous competition, UAE based architects WA were selected to refurbish the resorts rooms and suites, delivering a contemporary underwater design to provide a fresh look and feel in keeping with the resorts underwater theme.

Integrated technology with sound bars and touch screen panels, oversized flat television screens and bespoke chandeliers are just some of the stand-out features of the spruced up new suites.

Mexico City Is Proposing to Build One of the World’s Largest Urban Parks – Smithsonian.com

Walking along the edge of a seasonally dry lakebed on the eastern outskirts of Mexico City, there is near perfect silence except for the occasional airplane that flies overhead.

These planes flying out of a nearby airport are a reminder of the estimated US$13 billion international airport that had been planned and partially constructed on top of the seasonal wetlands native to this place. Then, in 2018, Mexicos new president, Andrs Manuel Lpez Obrador, canceled the project and moved forward with plans to construct what would be one of the worlds largest urban parks instead. Experts from around the world hope the project, if successful, will serve as an example to other cities of what is possible in the fight against climate change.

The size of the proposed park is nearly unfathomable from ground level, covering 12,300 hectares (30,394 acres) and stretching 16 kilometers (10 miles) from end to end. Thats about the size of 36 New York Central Parks or more than twice the size of Manhattan.

The government and the architect behind the park, known as Parque Ecolgico Lago de Texcoco, see great potential in the park particularly in the face of mounting water shortages, floods and climate change. They view this mega project as one that could turn back the clock on disruptions to the regions water systems dating back to Hernn Corts and the Spanish siege of Tenochtitlan in 1521.

The regions lakes were the primary source of freshwater during Aztec times, but the Spanish drained the valleys lakes after they took over the city of Tenochtitlan. This forced an independent Mexico centuries later to construct hundreds of miles of pipes to bring in roughly 30 percent of the citys water and to pump the rest from an underground aquifer. The city is now pumping water out of that aquifer twice as fast as water is returning via rainfall.

On the other side of the equation, the city, which has been largely paved over, floods for months during the rainy season.

The problem is we cannot turn 500 years of history and go 180 degrees overnight, says Mexico City architect Iaki Echeverra, executive director of the park project. Very few times you are offered the possibility that can have an impact that can really change things. If we manage to do this, it changes the direction of the history of the city and the valley.

The project is designed to be constructed in the basin of the former Lake Texcoco, which dried as Mexico City expanded into a megacity of more than 20 million people over the past two millennia. The area has not been inhabited and has been off-limits to the public due to annual flooding and infrastructure issues.

Echeverra is seeking to restore the vast majority of the area to its former state, including rejuvenating numerous lakes that were drained, as well as wetland areas. One of the goals of the project is to merge the concepts of public spaces and green infrastructure, providing hiking trails, sports courts and lakes for recreation, while bringing back the lakes to rebalance the Valley of Mexicos water system. That includes routing stormwater runoff into the wetlands and replenishing aquifers.

This is really the only space thats left [in the city] and its federal land and its untapped, Echeverra says. It was going to disappear. Right now theres a possibility to keep it, so we are really working hard to make this happen as soon as possible, to bring people here to understand that this is not a fantasy. This is something that can happen.

The government hopes to open up the first section of the park project by 2021, according to Echeverra. The architect, who grew up in Mexico City, says he is feeling the pressure from all angles to complete the project or get each component on the right path before the end of the current presidential administration in 2024.

People are expecting me to fail. A lot of people. For the right reasons, for the wrong reasons, for every reason, Echevarra says. Theres a lot of people betting this will not happen, so of course theres pressure.

In addition to the water-system goals of the park, the project team is planning for a significant solar power component and is considering wind and biofuels to offset maintenance costs.

I cannot afford the luxury of just going crazy on the beauty of this place like I used to, Echeverra says, referring to his previous work designing projects; now, as the director of the entire project, he has to worry about more than just design, such as costs and implementation. I have to give it the means to maintain itself, he says. The means to grow, the means for it not to disappear after this government is gone.

Echeverra had proposed a design for the park 10 years ago, but that plan was quashed to make way for the airport project.

We thought it was dead for sure and it suddenly comes back to life again. Im not mystical or anything, but its almost like the lake is refusing to die completely, Echeverra says. Its fighting. I think we had to get involved in that fight.

The governments decision to dedicate an enormous plot of land for natural area and green infrastructure so near the city center is a progressive one that experts say could affect the future of public spaces around the world.

If this is successful, a lot of people will go there and learn from it, says Steffen Lehmann, director of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Architecture and co-director of the interdisciplinary Urban Futures Lab. Cities are learning from each other. Cities are learning that they should share their best practices.

Lehmann, an internationally recognized architect and author on sustainable architecture and urban design, pointed to New Yorks High Line project and the High Line-ization of copycat parks around the world as an example.

Other world cities that have completed major urban parks in recent years include Seoul, Moscow and Singapore.

Its going to have a huge impact, Lehmann says of the upcoming Mexico City project. We need urban forests with climate change, and we need those parks to keep cities cool because of the urban island effect. Cities heat up and store and trap solar radiation and store heat like an oven. Its underestimated. Its a big silent killer.

The project will also capture carbon and mitigate air pollution.

Lehmann says there is an ongoing struggle against the privatization and urbanization of public space in cities around the world.

This is the kind of work that cities are hungry for. They are looking for ways to include good local governance practices and good water management practices, says Raul Pacheco-Vega, a water scholar at Centro de Investigacin y Docencia Econmicas, a Mexico City-based think tank. Here you kill three birds with one stone. You improve urban governance by providing more green space, you improve water management, and you showcase measures of adaptation to climate change.

Echevarra is directing the project for the National Water Commission (Conagua), and has gathered a diverse team of ecologists, architects, planners, landscapers, biologists and politicians to bring the project to life.

The first phase, restoring Lake Nabor Carrillo and building public sporting facilities in a portion adjacent to it, is expected to break ground in early 2020. That portion will also include a 10-kilometer (6-mile) running trail around the lake.

Eventually, the project will expand to the area where the airport had been partially built and involve restoring the Casa Colorada lake, which will flood the already-built runway and terminal foundations.

Theres a lot of things that have to happen over there, Echevarra says, referring to an ongoing legal battle over the canceled airport. Ive tried to keep a very cold mind about that. We have so much work to do without even touching that area. We will work on that. From a project stance, we will begin working as soon as its legally permitted.

The project is located roughly 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the citys Centro Histrico and is directly adjacent to some of the poorest neighborhoods in Mexico City, according to Echevarra.

It would be something of a life-changing situation if this space could be created and be next to what is the highest rate of crime and highest rate of poverty in the entire metropolitan region, he says.

The project currently is being funded completely by public money, according to Echevarra; but he says his team is looking into private funders for portions of the site, including the renewable energy production areas.

Preliminary studies required for the project were estimated at US$11.78 million, according to Conagua.

I think if we manage to do this, it would set a precedent for change worldwide, Echevarra says. Its such a large opportunity to do the right thing. If we manage to do it, everybody would be interested in it. We have to.

Ramsay World Travel on the move in Dunfermline – Dunfermline Press

RAMSAY World Travel are going places with a new shop set to open in Dunfermline.

Subway moved from Douglas Street into the Kingsgate Shopping Centre recently and the holiday firm are making the opposite journey, taking over the empty premises in Douglas Street.

Commercial manager Dave Terry said: "The new shop opens on Monday, February 17.

"It's a really good area; it's on the street from the bus station and the Kingsgate and two seconds from the High Street.

"I think that's going to be perfect; it's a bigger shop too so we can get more desks in.

"We will be recruiting, yes, we've got seven at the moment and will be moving up to 10 staff.

"Basically, the idea is to get more business which means more staff."

Asked why they were moving out of the Kingsgate, he explained: "We've bought the premises in Douglas Street.

"Our company policy now is to buy the premises where previously we've rented.

"We wanted to be out on the street and closer to the High Street too as it's better for us.

"Most of our shops are a hop, skip and a jump from the high street; it works for us as you don't have to pay the high costs but you get the benefits from it."

It's a financial commitment from Ramsay World Travel, who are investing in the town centre when others are moving out.

Mr Terry said the model works for them and added: "We get a lot of business from the website and from Facebook but the shops are our bread and butter.

"There are still a lot of people who want to come in, sit down and get some advice about booking their holiday.

"What advice can you give someone on a computer?

"How do they know they're getting the best deal or the best hotel?

"With us, they can ask questions and we have the knowledge to advise them.

"I know a lot of companies have moved completely onto the internet but we'll always have shops."

He added: "We've just had our accounts through which show our turnover has increased, year on year, for the 35th year in a row.

"What's it down to? Hard work I suppose.

"Every year since we started we've managed to increase the turnover and profits and this year was no exception."
