Two local tech start-ups win grants for super-computer program

Peter Qian has come up with a way to get new industrial products on the market a lot faster.

Dennis Bahr is working on a neutron camera that will do a better job checking manufactured equipment for flaws and screening items for explosives.

The two Madison-area men and the young companies they have started were among six named last week to receive Computational Science Challenge Grants to work with Milwaukee Institute, a nonprofit computational research center founded in 2007.

This is the first year for the contest, with a $250,000 grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. and a matching grant for $250,000 worth of support services funded by Milwaukee private equity firm Mason Wells.

Qian, 36, an associate professor of statistics at UW-Madison, founded Metamodeling Analytics, a Madison company developing software to speed the process for designing new industrial products. The company has three employees.

The most time-consuming part of the process is conducting simulations on each variation of each component, he said. Developing a new type of car engine, for example, can involve as many as millions of possible alterations and it can take as long as a year to conduct simulations on all of them, Qian said.

Metamodeling has come up with a way to conduct simulations on a small portion of the configurations to predict the results for all the possible configurations, he said. We are building cutting-edge analytics, Qian said. We want to create a new market called simulation analytics, and we want to become a leader in this field.

Receiving the $50,000 grant to work with Milwaukee Institute will provide a big step forward, he said. It is very critical for me to develop a high-performance version of my software, Qian said. It will also be very useful for me to carry out beta (prototype) tests with potential customers.

Qian said the technology could be useful in a wide variety of industries, such as aerospace, chemical, semiconductors and medical devices. There is huge potential, he said. Many, many companies need that kind of technology.

Bahr and co-founder John Peterman are the sole employees, so far, of Helionx, a Middleton company that is developing an accelerator to produce neutrons that could be used, for example, for a neutron camera that can record specialized images.

'Super computer' claims Champions League awaits Liverpool!

Liverpool have been spoken about as Premier League winners, with players, former Reds and rival managers talking up their title credentials.

Jordan Henderson believes that if the club keep their impressive form up, then a 19th crown could be heading to Anfield. "Obviously we're quietly confident in every game we go into that we ca win and we've just got to keep doing that until the end of the season, and the see where we are," he said.

Well, thanks to the maths whizzes at Bloomberg, we don't have to wait. They've already shown us what the final Premier League table will look like, according to their 'super computer'.Liverpool may not top it, but what we do know is that the Reds will apparently make a triumphant return to the Champions League with the club most likely to finish on 76 points, enough to pip Tottenham to fourth place.

Looking at the graphic below which shows the likelihood of the Reds amassing various points totals we can see that there is an 8.1 per cent chance of Liverpool finishing with 76 points, though Bloomberg estimate that tricky games against Southampton, Man United, Man City and Chelsea await them.

.

Below is the likelihood of Liverpool reaching the required points total that will either see them finish in the top four or force them to settle for a place in the Europa League.

They also calculated that Tottenham, Liverpool's main rivals for Champions League football, have less than a two per cent chance of edging them on points.

Where do you think Liverpool will finish? Comment below

'Super computer' reveals how the Premier League table will look in May

Yesterday we revealed how the boffins at Bloomberg Sports had used complex data analysis to prove the validity of Tim Sherwoods theory that Spurs could lose fourof their remaining 13 Premier League matches and still finish in the top four.

Now, the geniuses at Bloomberg have gone one step further and used their super computer to predict the outcome and winner of this years Premier League. The conclusion produced from the numbers crunched in their complex algorithm is that Chelsea will lift the Premier League title with 83 points, beating Manchester City by only a single point in the race for the top.

Plucky Arsenal will, according to Bloomberg, finish third, while resurgent Liverpool will indeed finish in the top four, quite comfortably, ahead of Tottenham.

Manchester United, meanwhile, could be without any kind of European football if they finish in seventh. Theres more misery for Norwich, Cardiff and Fulham however, as Bloomberg predict they will be relegated.

Its worth keeping in mind that Bloombergs predicted table is constantly updated as calculations adjust according to the results of each Premier League matchday, but for the moment, it makes for promising reading if youre a Chelsea or Liverpool fan, and immense disappointment for City, United, Spurs and Arsenal supporters. Check out the full table below...

'Super computer' says Tim Sherwood is right: Spurs CAN lose four games and reach the Champions League

Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood has claimed his team could lose four orfive of their remaining 13 Premier League matches and still finish in the top four.

"I would say we can possibly afford to lose four or five games maybe of what we've got left," said Sherwood, while admitting his maths isn't the best.

But can Spurs really lose that many games and still qualify for the Champions League?

We asked the sports data analysts at Bloomberg Sports to crunch the numbers, using a complex algorithm, and they have calculated Tottenham's most likely results between now and the end of the season, as well as the number of points Spurs are most likely to collect and how many they will likely need to finish fourth.

First, here are the results predicted by the Bloomberg Sports boffins with percentages allocated to the likelihood of either a win, loss or draw

Next is a graphic illustrating the most likely points totals Spurs will achieve, with the Lilywhites calculated to have the highest chance (7.5 per cent) of finishing with 67 points.

Finally, after running their simulator over 100,000 times, Bloomberg Sports have calculated that a total of 74.5 points would secure fourth place.

It is not possible to score 0.5 of a point, of course, so assuming that 74 points would be enough to take fourth, that would leave Tottenham on 47 points at time of writing able to lose four of their remaining 13 games and still able to reach the desired total, if they won the other nine to rack up another 27 points.

Which tech companies scored on Super Bowl Sunday?

The most famous commercial to air during the Super Bowl during its 48-year history touted a personal computer, so its only fitting that tech companies see footballs biggest stage as an opportunity to make a big marketing splash. And while the ad blitz may have been nothing like the days of the Web 1.0 bubblewe miss you, too, Pets.com sock puppetplenty of tech companies sought to buy their fair share of the spotlight during Sundays big game.

But which tech companies got the most bang for their buck and which ones would have been better off setting fire to the pile of money it takes to buy an ad spot during the Super Bowl? Heres one mans rundown of which tech players delivered and which ones fumbled their big opportunity.

Americas most pugnacious carrier continued its one-company war against the tyranny of two-year commitments, enlisting college football standoutand NFL washoutTim Tebow to point out the folly of contracts.

Turns out Tebow is much better pitching wireless carriers than he ever was throwing passes to pro receivers.

T-Mobile made multiple Super Bowl appearances Sunday, again with Tebow and then with a fourth-quarter spot reminding everyone that its willing to pay your early termination fees if you care to leave your current carrier.

Grade: AT-Mobile stayed on message, and even got this cynical football fan to laugh with Tebow for once, and not at himor at least, not his throwing motion.

In a one-minute spot that never mentions any of its products by name, Microsoft drives home the point that the things it makes can improve our lives and expand our horizons.

Grade: A-minusMicrosofts efforts to humanize itself in the past have been more miss than hitwho can forget the awkwardness of Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld bonding over churros?but this minute-long ad actually generated a little lump in the throat in a venue that usually favors snark over sentiment.

Its not an ad so much as it is a public service announcement, but Bank of America bought time during the Super Bowl broadcast to let people know that they could download U2s Invisible for free on Apples iTunes Store for the next 24 hoursand that the bank would donate $1 for every download to the [Red] charity.

Grade: A-minusIts hard to get too snooty when somebody wants to give you something for free and is willing to donate money to charity on top of that.

Super Bowl Betting, Last-Minute Point Spread, Trends, Picks

If the Super Bowl computer prediction at Odds Shark turns out to be accurate Sunday, it will be the best-case scenario for several sportsbooks.

The NFL picks computer projected a 35-34 final for Denver, which would be great news for oddsmakers. The Broncos would fail to cover the spread with that margin of victory, which would be a victory for sportsbooks, who have seen 60 percent of the betting volume on Denver.

It would also be a victory on the moneyline, where most books had more action on Seattle.

And while a high-scoring game is not the preferenceof many Vegas books, one online shop would be happy with an OVER play.

After opening with Seattle at -1, the line ballooned quickly to -2. A ton of Denver money this weekend has pushed the number to -2.5 (with one book monitored by OddsShark.comat -3, the best line for Seattle bettors). Several shops were predicting a surge of late Seattle money, which could push the closing spread back to -2 or lower.

The perfect ending to Peyton Mannings historic season proved doomed from the first bad snap, which resulted in a safety for the Seahawks. Somehow, his day only got worse from there. The Seattle defense held Manning to 280 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, pedestrian numbers for a guy who has been anything but. Malcolm Smith, the Seattle linebacker who grabbed Mannings first interception and recovered a fumble, was named the games Most Valuable Player, but it could have just as easily been any number of players on Seattles defense. Richard Sherman had an uncharacteristically quiet game before his injury, but thats because Denver mostly avoided throwing the ball anywhere near him.

Seattles defense did pretty much what theyve done all season. The Seahawks offense, though, didnt, and that was a good thing. Russell Wilson had 206 yards for two touchdowns and zero interceptions. That doesnt seem like much, but it didnt matter because the Seahawks used several players like they were number one weapons. Four different Seahawks were credited with at least one touchdown. Eight different players had receiving yards.

Smith as MVP, though, is a fitting representative for the rest of the Seahawks, a group of roundly overlooked individuals who combined to make a fearsome whole. He was drafted in the seventh round in the 2011 draft and didnt even start for the Seahawks until Week 15. Seattle is full of similar stories: Richard Sherman was a fifth rounder ; Russell Wilson was drafted in the third round, after a punter. But developing that underrated talent has allowed Seattle the freedom to spend elsewhere in free agency, ultimately giving them a team that was too well-rounded for anyone to stop. Wilson and Sherman both made under $1 million in salary this season; under the terms of the most recent CBA, Wilson has to go at least another before the Seahawks can even think about paying him more. The real MVP of Seattles Super Bowl then, was a front office willing to take risks and some really good accounting.

10:15 p.m. Eastern time Billed as one of the best matchups ever, the clash between the record-setting offense of the Denver Broncos and the top-ranked defense of the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII was a total wash.

In the end, the Seahawks, one of the leauge's youngest teams and without any Super Bowl experience, dominated both sides of the ball, winning 43-8. The Bronco's, led by their 37-year-old quarterback Payton Manning, who was coming off the most remarkable single-season passing performance the NFL has ever seen, could not match the Seahawks intensity and speed.

Super game, Super Cold, Super Bowl

By UT San Diego 12:36 p.m.Feb. 1, 2014

It's the quintessential American holiday where families and friends gather and large amounts of food are consumed. No, it' not Thanksgiving Day, it's Super Sunday.

On this frigid evening in East Rutherford, N.J., the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks meet to decide football supremacy: the leagues top offense vs. the leagues top defense; the No. 1-seeded team in the AFC vs. the No. 1-seeded team in the NFC; The Mile High city vs. The Emerald City.

But before gathering with cohorts around that new, 55-inch Vizio, you may want to brush up on some Super Bowl trivia. Here are a few tidbits that will get the conversation started as you contemplate whose idea it was to play this thing outside in a cold-weather city anyway.

This Jan. 23, 1984, file photo, shows the Apple Macintosh that was unveiled in Cupertino, Calif. (AP Photo/File)

Do Super Bowl commercials matter? Thirty years ago, Apple introduced it's Macintosh computer during the third quarter of Super Bowl XVIII. In November, Forbes listed Apple as the world's most valued brand at $104.4 billion.

While today's game is expected to break the record, the coldest Super Bowl game was played at Tulane Stadium (SB VI) where the temperature on the field at kickoff was 39 degrees. The warmest was in Los Angeles' Coliseum (SB VII) where the thermometer reached 84 degrees at kickoff.

Honorable mention goes to San Diego's Super Bowl XXXVII - 81

Golden Chopsticks' chicken wings.

Proclaiming the "Great Wing Shortage" of 2013 over, the National Chicken Council says that 1.25 billion chicken wings will be consumed during Super Bowl XLVIII.

5 Super Bowl tech tips

An aerial view shows MetLife Stadium this week as crews ready the East Rutherford, New Jersey, venue for Super Bowl XLVIII.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- The Super Bowl has gotten so big it's outgrown the trusty old television. Today's fans can enjoy the bloated spectacle on computers, mobile devices, Twitter and more.

For most, crowding around a TV with salty snacks, cold beer and good friends is still the classic way to experience America's biggest sports event. Fox has secured exclusive U.S. broadcast rights to the game, with the telecast beginning officially at 6 p.m. ET Sunday, although pre-game coverage will start four hours earlier.

Fox is adding a splash of high-tech wizardry to this year's event -- being played outdoors in chilly northern New Jersey -- with infrared cameras that will show the players' body temperatures.

You can employ your own tech tools to enhance the Super Bowl viewing experience -- especially if you can't get near a TV set. Here's a tech primer to enjoying Sunday's festivities:

More Super Bowl airtime than ever is devoted to ads

If it feels like youre watching more commercials during this Sunday's Super Bowl than ever before, your hunch is right.

The most valuable advertising time on television has surged almost 20 percent, to about 50 minutes of ad time last year, up from fewer than 42 minutes per Super Bowl a decade ago, according to Kantar Media.

Its not only beautifully crafted ads from top marketers such as Anheuser-Busch that are taking up more ad time. The NFL and the network airing the Super Bowl have also given more time to their in-house ads, Kantar found. Driving the longer ad time is demand from advertisers each shelling out a record $4 million for a 30-second spot as well as a desire from the NFL and TV networks to strut their in-house promotions, given the game reliably draws more than 100 million viewers.

For marketers, the Super Bowl can be a make or break event. Apple (AAPL) captured the imagination of a generation with its lauded 1984 ad, which ran the same year and introduced the Macintosh computer. But others werent so successful, such as athletic shoe company Just for Feet, which ran a reviled ad in the 1999 Super Bowl. It later went out of business.

Part of the time bloat is due to advertisers opting for longer commercials.

Take Chrysler. In each of the last two Super Bowls, the automaker has opted to air two-minute ads, a length thats rarely seen on television. Last year, the automaker won kudos for its moving spot featuring a voice-over from the late radio legend Paul Harvey.

Chrysler wasnt alone in going long -- it was one of 15 advertisers last year airing spots that ran for 60 seconds or longer. By comparison, only 10 commercials were longer than one minute in 2010, Kantar found.

Super Bowl ads show something shocking: maturity (+video)

Super Bowl ads in 2014 will have fewer tongue kisses, half-naked women, or Gangnam Style. Instead, look for Super Bowl ads featuring fully-clothed women, well-known celebrities, and actual product information.

Forget slapstick humor, corny gimmicks and skimpy bikinis. This year's Super Bowl ads promise something surprising: Maturity.

There won't be any close-up tongue kisses in Godaddy's ad. Nor will there be half-naked women running around in the Axe body spray spot. And Gangnam Style dancing will be missing from the Wonderful Pistachios commercial.

In their place? Fully-clothed women, well-known celebs, and more product information.

"We're seeing sophistication come to the Super Bowl," says Kelly O'Keefe, a professor of brand strategy at Virginia Commonwealth University. "Not long ago, almost everything seemed to be about beer or bros or boobs."

Companies that typically go for ads with shock value are toning them down as they try to get the most out of the estimated $4 million that 30-second Super Bowl spots cost this year.

Experts say companies are using the ads to build their image, rather than just grab attention for one night. Additionally, although the old adage asserts that "sex sells," experts say companies realize that watchers have grown bored with sophomoric humor and other obvious shock tactics.

"You can't really shock people visually anymore," says ad critic and Mediapost columnist Barbara Lippert. "So, this year people are being more creative."
