How IBM Is Using Watson And An Innovative Workspace To Crunch Big Data For Big Solutions

IBM loves Big Data. The bigger it gets, the more servers, storage, and services Big Blue would like to sell you (a lot more, please). But the volumes involved have already grown so big that IBMs own researchers struggle to get a handle on it.

Last year, for example, IBM fellow Laura Haas asked one of her colleagues at the companys Almaden research center in Silicon Valley why he wasnt using bigger data sets. Because, he replied, it takes 80% of my time just to prep the data I have. Haas realized that the more IBMs research agenda was consumed by analytics, the more time and energy its experts would spend struggling with expanding data sets, slowing down the pace of discovery.

The obvious thing was to hand the volumes in question over to dedicated data scientists, but removing researchers from the loop would only make things worse. Plus, it seemed to cut against the grain of Big Data, whose value isnt governed by some function of Moores Law or Kryders Law in terms of the linear expansion of storage capacity or the falling costs of sensors.

Rather, its more a function of Metcalfes Law, which states that the value of a network is the square of the number of connected devices; the value is in the exponentially increasing connections, not the nodes. The same is true of IBMs people, too. Instead of sidelining its researchers, how could it bring more eyes--and different ones--to opaque data sets being crunched in the cloud?

The solution, unveiled at Almaden last fall, is the Accelerated Discovery Lab, a large, open space amply equipped with comfy furniture, whiteboards, and lots of screens, not to mention an ever-evolving mix of project teams, systems managers, visiting clients, corporate anthropologists, and drop-ins, not to mention a sliver of Watson IBM's newest super computer. As the labs name implies, the goal is crack the code on the optimal combination of diversity, proximity, physical space, and cloud computing to spot opportunities in the gaps between disciplines faster and more often.

We call it cultivating strategic serendipity, says Haas, who is also the director of technology and operations for the lab. Its those A-ha! moments you have in the shower or often around the water cooler. We want to bring people together in a rich enough environment they want to play in it, and then create serendipity by leveraging the connections in the room, the connections in the data, and our ability to see what users are doing.

The labs first project was to apply Watsons natural language-processing ability to new domains, with drug research at the top of the list. Working with computational biologists from the Baylor College of Medicine, IBMs data scientists began plowing through millions of papers, patents, and clinical studies culled from databases and IBMs pharma customers, before eventually narrowing their focus to the tumor-suppressing gene TP-53. Sifting through the literature for promising, but overlooked chemicals to treat mutated genes, within a few months the team found four candidates. According to Jeff Welser, the labs director of strategy and program development, historically, you find about one per year.

Thats pretty fast, but could it have been faster? Part of the labs mission is to test hypotheses about the space itself. Were trying to instrument our projects from the get-go, recording them from the day they start, Haas says, benchmarking their progress against similar teams that arent in the lab to see whether all those whiteboards and multi-disciplinary teams yield better tangible results.

While there are currently no plans to build similar labs in any of IBMs other research centers, Haas hopes to someday develop a software tool that might help the company manage its own far-flung resources. Imagine a version of Watson that recognizes who or what it is youre searching for, then begins suggesting data sets and colleagues working in tangential fields the IBMer might have otherwise never thought of.

For now, however, when it comes to cross-pollination, there is more than I expected, she says. And less than I want.

HUNTSVILLE CITY COUNCIL: Super Kroger construction stirs Council debate

HUNTSVILLE The construction of a new Super Kroger grocery store kicked off a heavy back-and-forth discussion between Huntsville City Council members Tuesday.

Council members voted 5-3 to authorize the city manager to enter into an agreement with Kroger that waives all permit and inspection fees an in-kind cost to the city of at most $75,000.

The biggest point of contention was the citys missed revenue. Three councilmembers Andy Brauninger, Ronald Allen and Joe Rodriguez said Kroger would not be hurt by paying the costs and that the city could put the money to good use.

Four councilmembers Keith Olson, Don Johnson, Tish Humphrey and Lydia Montgomery said the costs would be outweighed over time and that denying the waiver might scare off Kroger.

Councilmember Joe Emmett voted for the authorization, but never spoke as to what his reasons were. Mayor Mac Woodward was not present Tuesday evening.

According to Johnson, Kroger will build a store similar to the Super Kroger in Willis, which has 120,000 square feet of building space. The store in Huntsville will be located in the Ravenwood Shopping Center in the Tax Investment Reinvestment Zone.

The agreement says the Huntsville store would be approximately 90,000 square feet with 30,000 extra in case the store wants to expand. Johnson said this is because the initial Kroger store would not have a furniture section similar to the Willis location.

Kroger would be required to create 50 new full- and part-time jobs by Dec. 31, 2015 adding approximately $1 million in local wages, according to city documents.

While the $75,000 waiver would not cost the city any out-of-pocket money, it would prevent the city from collecting fees they otherwise would have.

I like the fact that Kroger is expanding and I like that, Rodriguez said. But they say the estimate of the cost to build this new project is approximately $1.3 million over what they expected. ... ($75,000) wouldnt stop the tears. I dont think its going to hurt Kroger. Its a big corporation. I dont see this as a necessary expense for the city.

Child care centers to follow first lady guidelines

BOWIE, Md. (AP) The nation's second-largest for-profit child care provider is adopting Michelle Obama's healthy eating and activity guidelines.

The Learning Care Group agreed Thursday to limit TV and computer time for children, serve fruits and-or vegetables at every meal, eliminate fried foods, replace sugary drinks with water or plain, low-fat milk and provide at least an hour of daily physical activity.

It also will allow mothers to provide breast milk for their kids and accommodate those who want to breast feed.

Mrs. Obama joined the Super Sprowtz, vegetable mascots who teach children about nutrition and wellness, in an exercise dance with 4- and 5-year-olds at one of the Learning Care Group's centers near Washington on Thursday. She also shared an afternoon snack of carrot and celery sticks and grape tomatoes with a younger group of kids.

The first lady told the youngsters that they, too, will grow up to be healthy and strong if they eat well and stay active.

"These are grown-up vegetables," Mrs. Obama said of the broccoli, carrot and eggplant costumed-characters she had just danced with. "They started out as little bitty vegetables just like you and because they kept eating right and exercising they grew up to be really big and strong."

The Learning Care Group says it provides early education and child care services to more than 100,000 children between the ages of 6 weeks and 13 years at its 900 centers. They operate under five brand names: Childtime Learning Centers, Tutor Time Child Care/Learning Centers, The Children's Courtyard, Montessori Unlimited and La Petite Academy. Mrs. Obama visited a La Petite Academy center in Maryland on Thursday.

The first lady this week has been marking the fourth anniversary of "Let's Move," her nationwide initiative to combat childhood obesity in the U.S. The healthy eating and activity guidelines for child care centers, which were released in 2011, are part of that program.

With the addition of the Learning Care Group, some 13,000 child care centers are now following the rules, said Sam Kass, the executive director of "Let's Move." He said getting kids off to a healthy start is "absolutely vital" because their tastes, preferences and habits are shaped in the earliest years of their lives.

More than 750,000 children are now served by facilities that have adopted the guidelines.

The boffins at Bloomberg Sports have certainly been doing overtime when working out just who will be relegated from the Premier League, and now their findings can be revealed.

He had tried to see what it was like to make acting his main event, but he decided ultimately he needed to do both. And he makes both work.

Not insignificantly, he met his wife in Phoenix at the same time, which influenced his decision about a potential move to Los Angeles, the obviously better option for aspiring actors.

I wondered a lot: How could I pursue this without totally being poor and having no job in LA and just getting by? he said. It was interesting brainstorming various options. Long story short is that I didnt go based on my life circumstances at the time.

I started to say, Well, how can I advance my acting career in Phoenix while doing this software engineering thing? My first thought was to try producing things, either with me in them or not. That way I could make something that could possibly be discovered and have potential to pop.

Since then, Suri has been juggling his job at Intel (which also involved the role change to systems analyst), the acting and producing, and being a husband and father.

This means having his agent schedule auditions during lunch, taking a vacation day if he needs to when shooting a commercial, and working nights and weekends on independent film and TV projects with people who have similar commitments to busy day jobs.

I was exhausted by the end of it, he said of his recent run of shooting an indy TV pilot, which was five days of extremely long weekend hours and late nights after being in the office all day. But thats how you make it work. It really stretches you thin though. You just do what you can.
