Super Bowl: Nate Silver picks Seahawks, Madden 25 has Broncos

The predictions are starting to trickle in, but so far the most interesting arent from NFL media, such as sportswriters or TV analysts.

In fact, one comes from a self-described nerd, and three others arent from people at all. Theyre from computers and video games.

Nate Silver, the numbers-crunching nerd, favors Seattle. That sounds like good news for Seahawks fans, since Silver became famous for predictions about the presidential election. Silver, whose Five-Thirty-Eight blog has moved to ESPN.com, doesnt sound nearly as certain about the Super Bowl. His luke-warm prediction came Wednesday night 0n The Colbert Report.

He went on to say the game is a toss-up but hes sticking with the Seahawks because he picked them to start the season. He didnt guess the score.

Two video games Madden 25 and Tecmo Super Bowl both gave the Broncos narrow victories in overtime. Madden said Denver would win by three on a field goal, and Techmo thought it would be on a safety.

Dont fold, spindle or mutiliate those computer-game predictions just yet, though. A computer model, Machines Predictalator, ran 50,000 simulations, and the score that came up most often was 24-21, Seattle. The Seahawks won 54.2 percent of the time.

Here are links to each prediction and YouTube video of the Madden 25 highlights. Stay tuned for more predictions and comments in the days leading up to the game.

Madden 25 video game

The Denver Broncos will win 31-28 in overtime. according to EA Sports Madden 25 video game. Denver will win it on a 48-yard field goal by kicker Matt Prater.

Computer Simulation Predicts Seahawks Over Broncos, 24-21

Sports Fan Insider

Keep up with your favorite teams and athletes with daily updates.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) The Seahawks and the Broncos will only play once for the title of Super Bowl champion. The game wont be played on a computer, but on the field. But that doesnt stop people from trying to guess what will happen on the field, with what happens in a computer simulation.

Prediction Machines Predictalator ran a simulation of Sundays Super Bowl 50,000 times, and found that the most likely score has the Seahawks beating the Broncos, 24-21.

Of the 50,000 simulations, the Seahawks won 54.8% of the time, and the Broncos 45.2% of the time.

The Broncos are currently a 2.5 point favorite at most sports books.

Though the Seahawks came out on top more often, the Broncos edged them out in most offensive categories. Notching 331 total yards to Seattles 327, and 229 passing yards to the Seahawks 209. 229 yards however, would be a substantial drop for Peyton Manning during his record-setting season. The Seahawks did have the edge in rushing yards, at 117 to the Broncos 101.

The simulations also predict individual stats. Peyton Manning averaged 241 passing yards, throwing 1.9 touchdowns and 1.1 interceptions.

Since Week 2 of the NFL season, the Predictalators projected Super Bowl every week was Denver vs. Seattle. To add to that, both of these teams were more than 50% likely to make the Super Bowl for all but two weeks in that stretch as well, a feat rarely seen by any team in any week before the playoffs started in the last decade (let alone two teams consistently), Prediction Machines Paul Bessire writes. This is the best Super Bowl we could have this season and it may be the best matchup of NFL teams in the Super Bowl in the leagues history. Not too surprisingly, the spread on this game has stayed below a field goal and has, at times already, favored either team.

Super Bowl security net cast wide to protect game and related events

As the Super Bowl gets closer, authorities in New York and New Jersey are mounting a massive security operation to make sure game day is secure. NBC's national investigative correspondent Jeff Rossen reports.

By Jeff Rossen, Tom Winter and Avni Patel, NBC News

More than 80,000 football fans are expected to brave near-freezing temperatures to attend the New York regions first Super Bowl on Sunday, and more than 3,000 security guards, 700 cops and hundreds of high-tech gadgets will be on hand to greet them.

Similar armies of human and technological watchdogs will keep eyes and lenses trained on the tens of thousands of other people who will descend on the city to enjoy other festivities associated with America's top sports event making it the biggest and most-expensive security net in the 48-year history of the game.

The $1.6 billion Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., where the game will be played, will be the most tightly guarded venue with a 2.5 mile chain-link perimeter fence and cameras trained on every section and corridor inside. But multiple game-related events planned New York and New Jersey add several degrees of difficulty to the job of keeping fans and participants safe, security experts say.

This Super Bowl, says Ed Hartnett, former head of the New York Police Departments Intelligence Unit, truly defines the word challenge when it comes to security.

There is no intelligence indicating that terrorists have targeted the game or related events, but Hartnett says that doesnt mean that threats dont exist : I would list them in priority order being a suicide bomber, a vehicle laden with explosives and a mass shooter or mass shooters similar to the Kenyan mall, or the Mumbai incidents, he said. His concerns are echoed by law enforcement officials overseeing the game.

Extensive mass transit, bridge and tunnel networks in the vicinity are a particular area of concern, according to a review of sensitive law enforcement documents detailing the Super Bowl security plan and intelligence by NBC News. The game is being billed as the Mass Transit Super Bowl by the New Jersey Transit system, and rail officials say the security experience for fans taking the train on game day will rival that of an airport, with bag-screening, K-9 teams and random searches for trains to and from the game.

The documents also discuss an emerging threat: computer hacking. Could criminals use a cyber-attack to hit the infrastructure and control systems for the game? While not considered likely, officials recall what an accidental blackout did to last years game. Many of the key players in developing this years security plan attended the game in New Orleans and learned from the Superdome outage, which delayed the game for 34 minutes early in the third quarter.

Super Bowl 2014, betting odds: Denver Broncos favored vs. Seattle Seahawks

The line moved almost as fast as it was posted and it was clear how bettors feel about Peyton Manning. The Super Bowl odds moved quickly to -2.5 in favor of Denver over Seattle.

The past four times that the best offensive team met the best defensive team in the Super Bowl, the defense won the championship three times.

That pattern has not swayed Super Bowl bettors from throwing early money behind the Denver Broncos as they prepare to face the league's top defense in the Seattle Seahawks.

The total for the game is currently set at 47.5 or 48 points.

"But the Super Bowl has not been kind to AFC teams or favorites lately, so we expect tons of action on both sides of this game," said Jack Randall of OddsShark.com.

Indeed, underdogs are 5-1 ATS in the past six Super Bowls and they have won outright in four of those games. And the NFC was riding a 5-0 ATS streak before the 49ers lost to the Ravens a year ago, a key consideration for anyone looking to bet on Super Bowl XLIV.

For the first time since the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts met in Super Bowl XLIV in 2010, the NFL's top two seeds clash in the Super Bowl this year in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Super Bowl Power Failure Little Threat, New Jersey Vows

Seconds after a power failure shut down last years Super Bowl game in New Orleans, Bill Laboss phone in New Jersey began vibrating with calls.

My BlackBerry almost fell out of my pocket, said Labos, who works for the electric utility charged with preventing a repeat of the blackout at this years National Football League championship between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos outside New York City.

We cant let that happen here, Labos was told by his boss, Ralph LaRossa, president of Newark, New Jersey-based Public Service Enterprise Group (PEG)s utility.

In the 12 months since, Labos has worked with stadium engineers, consultants and New Jersey sports officials to be sure it doesnt.

Power failures have plagued at least four high-profile sports games including the Super Bowl since 2010, dimming the glow of good feelings such events are supposed to generate for their host cities. More than 108 million people watched the blackout debacle at the New Orleans Superdome.

We were, in a way, robbed of a celebration of a successful Super Bowl, Doug Thornton, Superdome general manager, said in an interview this month.

Because the 2013 blackout was blamed on a failed switch, electrical equipment inside and outside the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, has been inspected, upgraded, backed-up and tested repeatedly to make sure all systems -- from high-voltage cables to circuit breakers -- are as fail-proof as possible.

There are redundancies to our redundancies, Brian McCarthy, a spokesman for the NFL, based in New York, said in a telephone interview.

In September, Labos supervised a 12-hour full-power test at MetLife Stadium simulating the Super Bowl.

Nothing tripped. Were confident we are going to withstand the load, he said.

Super Bowl ticket market surprisingly stable – for now

TARIQ ZEHAWI / STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER

Workers on Monday setting up scaffolding around MetLife Stadium to hold advertising for the Super Bowl.

Sports ticket brokers know that the night of the two National Football League conference championships, as well as the day after, usually are moving days prices moving on up, that is, as some giddy fans of the two teams headed to the Super Bowl cant wait to buy tickets no matter what the cost.

But as Prominent Ticket chief executive Lance Patania stayed up late Sunday night on his computer after the Denver Broncos and then the Seattle Seahawks advanced to the Feb. 2 game at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands, he noticed, well, almost nothing a pattern that continued throughout Monday.

Its weird how dormant it is, said Patania, whose company is based in Glen Rock. Nobodys pulling the trigger yet.

While the initial get-in-the-door price of more than $2,000 is an all-time high, Patania said, its not as if the small number of sales has left sellers panicked into lowering their price.

Its simple economics that when you see [Monday] morning there are 1,900 seats on the market, and [late Monday afternoon] there are over 4,500, that should drive the price down immediately, Patania said. So somethings wrong with this market.

TiqIQ.com spokesman Chris Matcovich whose company tracks such secondary ticket markets as Stubhub, which generally parallels prices being offered by brokers agreed that the lack of a bump in the first 24 hours after the conference title games was surprising.

After looking over the numbers for this year from previous years, I think $1,500 will be a reasonable buy point in Week 2, unless demand from Broncos and Seahawks fans picks up, Matcovich said of prices for upper-level seats.

That would be roughly on par with each of the more recent Super Bowls, said SeatGeek spokesman Connor Gregoire, who agrees that the ticket-cost trend is likely to fall by next week. The average ticket sale price for last years San Francisco versus Baltimore game in New Orleans, Gregoire notes, slid from a peak of $3,445 just after the conference championships, to just $1,551 per ticket on the day of the game.

Seattle Seahawks vs. Denver Broncos: Super Bowl Spread Analysis and Prediction

It's the No. 1 defense against the No. 1 offense in Super BowlXLVII, as the NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks meet the AFC Champion Denver Broncos.

The NFC has covered five of the last six Super Bowls, while underdogs are also on a 5-1 against-the-spread run in those games and have won four of them outright. All those scenarios point to a Seattle win if those trends repeat themselves on Feb. 2.

Defense wins championships and nobody does defense better than Seattle, though nobody does offense better than Peyton Manning.

Broncos vs. Seahawks point spread: Broncos opened as 1-point favorites; the total was 47.5. (Line updates and matchup report)

Odds Shark computer prediction: 34.8-33.6 Broncos

Why the Seahawks can cover the Super Bowl spread

Seattle's lock-down cornerback Richard Sherman and the team's power running back Marshawn Lynch are the keys to a win. While Lynch will help the Seahawks control the clock and keep the ball out of Denver's hands, Sherman will be tabbed with making things tough on the Broncos' explosive passing game.

New Gene Machine Could Mean More Accurate Diagnosis

A new supercomputer can sequence 20,000 genomes in a year for $1,000 a piece.

On Tuesday, Illumina, a global company that specializes in genomic analysis, announced the sale of a new genetic sequencing machine, that is faster and more affordable than existing technology.

"The new sequencer packs high-throughput performance into an affordable desktop form factor, enabling researchers to perform the most popular sequencing applications in less than a day,"said Jay Flatley, CEO of Illumina in a press release.

[READ: Researchers Link Aging Gene to Blood Cancer]

The new technology can sequence a whole human genome in a single run. And the sequencing data can be fed through open source or commercial programs or transferred, analyzed and stored in a secure space, the release noted.

The new machine can sequence 20,000 genomes in a year for $1,000 a piece, says HPC Wire. It can process 16 complete human genomes in three days. The "$1000 genome" is a long-sought marker of advancement that industry has seen as "a tipping point in the pace of genetic discovery" says Aaron Kroll at BioITWorld.

Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, director for the Center for Individualized Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, says that the new machinery's reduced cost and its ability to do large-scale processing will affect the reliability of doctor's results. When testing a person's genome having a larger data set to compare anomalies with will allow doctors to rule-out false positives that can sometimes occur when the pool of comparison data is too small. Doctors need to be certain that "what we call as abnormal is in fact abnormal," he says.

"So, being able to do this significantly larger scale sequencing at a lower cost allows you to collect information that you can apply to your individual patient, because you have more information," he adds.

Farrugia says he knew that the technology was being tested, but didn't know when it would be available. He's excited to try out the new machines and apply them to patient care. The first full human genome sequence was published in April 2003 for $3 billion, according to HPC Wire.
