Partying, Libertarian Style

I’m sitting in Libertarian Party headquarters, surrounded by empty Bertucci’s boxes, sandwiched between a guy wearing a Washington Nationals jersey that reads “Blood Donor” on the back and a former party director methodically eating potato chips. “Hey,” says one woman to a guy checking his iPhone.

Libertarian Johnson expects to impact Obama-Romney results in Ohio, Colorado

He still doesnt get much attention from the mainstream media, but Libertarian presidential candidate Gary E. Johnson could be the key to who wins the White House on Tuesday especially if he takes votes away from Barack Obama or Mitt Romney in Ohio or Colorado.

One recent CNN poll has Mr. Johnson, a former New Mexico governor, with 5 percent of the vote in Ohio.

Who that ultimately helps or hurts in the crucial swing state remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Mr. Johnson, who describes himself as more liberal than Obama on civil liberties and more conservative than Romney on dollars and cents, believes hell be a factor.

Whichever candidate I make lose, that would be terrific because that would open a debate and a discussion over the two parties, he told reporters recently. What really is the difference between the two? Its not much. Its really not much at all.

Tuesdays results, good or bad, also pose questions about the future of the self-branded minimum government, maximum freedom Libertarian Party.

Mr. Johnson officially joined only last year he was a Republican when he governed New Mexico for two terms from 1995 to 2003. But to hear him tell it, the party that began as a small group of activists in Colorado in 1971 is now closer to the cusp of serious national significance than ever before.

The evolution of the Libertarian Party is hopefully going to be one of being an annoyance of this election a spoiler to then going on to being a player in the future, he told The Washington Times.

The Libertarians are hoping for the kind of impact that third-party candidate Ralph Nader had in 2000, when he and the Green Party siphoned enough votes to cost Al Gore the state of Florida leading, ultimately, to the Democrat losing the election to George W. Bush.

Mr. Johnson is on the ballot in 48 states. While CNNs poll stopped short of measuring whose votes he might take in Ohio, the Libertarian is pretty sure hell take votes from both candidates, and he predicted he could affect the races outcome in five battleground states.

Meet the Gelineaus, Michigan's Libertarian Family Slate

Bill Gelineau could have fielded other candidates to run alongside him, but instead, he kept it in the family.

The former Michigan Libertarian Party chairman and current political director is a habitual office-seeker. After past runs at state legislature, his target this year is Michigan's third Congressional district, where he's running for U.S. House against incumbent freshman Republican Rep. Justin Amash and Democratic challenger Steve Pestka.

He also organizes other Libertarians to run for office. This year his goal was to fill each of Michigan's 14 Congressional-district ballots with a Libertarian option, and since Libertarians qualify for ballot access as a party in the state, it's just a matter of nominating them. With a shortage of enthusiastic choices in two neighboring Central and Western Michigan districts, Gelineau asked his son and daughter-in-law.

John Gelineau, 26, and his wife of three years, Christie, 32, said yes. Bill nominated them at the state-party convention in June.

"I had a choice of asking John and Christie if they'd be willing to fill those seats instead of some of those unmotivated people who don't know the district and may not want to run an active campaign," Bill Gelineau told ABC News.

Check the ABC News Live Blog for updates throughout the day and results all night.

"Some of it is kind of a little bit selfish on my part," the elder Gelineau said. "To whatever extent the media and the news articles and the questionnaires that have our name on it create some sort of Google effort, it helps my campaign. If someone happens to see Christie's name because of the coverage she's gotten, because it shows up in a poll, they Google her name and then they find my name, and they say, 'Oh, I live in his district.' So there was a small amount of method."

When polls close in Michigan, the Gelineaus almost certainly won't have won. But for them, that's not really the point.

John said he's helped his father with campaigns since the age of 12. For him, it was a way to spend time with his father, and he liked the idea of helping out again-while presenting voters in the Fourth District with an alternative to incumbent GOP Rep. Dave Camp, Democrat Debra Freidell, and Green Party candidate Pat Timmons.

"It was actually gung ho about it. I wasn't the only option that he had-he asked me first. Obviously I have a job, I have a family to take care of, but the fact that he asked me first was a pretty big honor," John Gelineau told ABC News. "I never thought, growing up, that I would ever be a part of the Libertarian Party. I'm not really huge into it-I like to put my back into things."

Dude, could pot smokers decide the election – for Mitt Romney?

A marijuana legalization measure on the Colorado ballot promoted by Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson could be very important in this close presidential race.

The Jewish vote, women, Hispanics, even the Scandinavian vote have all been pegged by prognosticators as key swing constituencies in Tuesdays electoral showdown between President Obama and Mitt Romney.

But what if its really pot smokers who decide the next US president, specifically psychedelia enthusiasts in the battleground state of Colorado (9 electoral votes) where pot legalization and dark horse candidate Gary Johnson are both on the ballot?

Far out, right? Maybe not.

Polls suggest that Colorados Amendment 64, which would legalize and regulate marijuana much like alcohol, may pass on Tuesday, so legalization will be foremost on the minds of voters in a state now in a statistical deadlock between Obama and Romney. (Washington and Oregon also have pot legalization referendums on the ballot, but Romney stands little chance in those liberal northwestern enclaves.)

Cover Story:What Americans want from the next president

To thicken the haze, add former New Mexico Governor Johnson running for president as the Libertarian candidate. Johnson, who first supported legalization in 1999, has made Colorado his linchpin, campaigning extensively and paying for robocalls suggesting to Democratic voters that Obama has let them down by going against a 2008 campaign vow to go easy on medical marijuana dispensaries.

The nail biter for the two campaigns heading into Election Day: Johnson alone may take 1, possibly 2, percent of the Colorado vote, enough to tip the scales perhaps nationally for either of the major party contenders.

BOWLING GREEN Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson the Libertarian Party presidential candidate brought his message of small and out-of-your-business government to Bowling Green today.

Speaking to 150 or so people gathered at the Cla-Zel Theatre downtown, Mr. Johnson said he was more liberal than President Obama on social issues, more conservative than GOP nominee Mitt Romney on fiscal issues.

Less government is better government. Keep government out of the bedroom. Dont be making choices for me that I should be making, Mr. Johnson said to avid applause.

The former Republican said he would eliminate income tax and corporate tax in favor of a more fair consumption tax. He would eliminate the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Reserve. He advocates legalizing marijuana and same-sex marriage.

Mr. Johnson dismissed the idea that voting for a third-party candidate means wasting your vote.

Im hoping to rain on the party, he said. Im hoping to rain on the two-party system. Its over.

Libertarian in Wis. Senate race offers choice

MANITOWOC, Wis. (AP) - As a Libertarian candidate for Wisconsin's U.S. Senate, Joe Kexel knows he doesn't have a chance of defeating Democrat Tammy Baldwin or Republican Tommy Thompson. He says he'd just be happy to finish with 5% of the vote.

He says he's running to provide an alternative for voters who think their only option Tuesday is the lesser of 2 evils.

Kexel is an information-technology specialist from Kenosha. He says he's spent under $1,000 of his own money on his campaign, in a race where total spending could be in the $50 million range.

Kexel says he favors fiscal responsibility, lower taxes and a smaller military. A Manitowoc Herald Times report (http://htrne.ws/Sol6lZ ) says he hopes he'll get votes from people turned off by the negativity of the whole Senate campaign.
