Libertarian Party gets ballot access in W.Va.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Libertarian Party candidates no longer have to collect signatures to have their name placed on ballots, Secretary of State Natalie Tennant announced Thursday.

To gain access to the ballot, a party's candidate must receive 1 percent of the vote in the governor's race. The libertarian candidate, David Moran, did just that on Tuesday, according to a news release from Tennant's office.

More than 8,000 people voted for Moran even though only 1,448 people in the state are registered with the Libertarian Party, the release noted.

Libertarians will now be able to choose their candidate during a primary election or by party convention.

"Becoming an official political party also means a person cannot run as a primary candidate if they were registered as a member of one of the other official political parties within 60 days of filing to run. People registered with no party affiliation, independent, or any other registration other than the official four parties are not subject to that law," according to the release.

In order to maintain ballot access, the Libertarian Party will have to get at least 1 percent of the total ballots cast in the 2016 governor's race.

Gary Johnson runs most successful Libertarian campaign in party’s history

Gary Johnson is the first Libertarian to get more than 1 million votes. (GaryJohnson2012)He may have received only about 1 percent of the national vote, but Gary Johnson is already the most successful White House candidate in the Libertarian Party's nearly 41-year history.

"Ours is a mission accomplished," Johnson told FoxNews.com. "We put a true small-government, individual-freedom option on the ballot in virtually every state and have assembled an organization that will carry that message forward."

With final vote tallies still being calculated, Johnson's current total of 1,139,562 puts him significantly ahead of any of his party's nine other presidential candidates.

Interestingly, the only other Libertarian Party candidate to receive more than 1 million votes was Georgia Public Service Commission candidate John Monds, who received 1,076,726 votes, or 33.4 percent of the vote, during his 2008 campaign.

The most successful third-party candidate runs have historically been done by independents, most famously by Ross Perot in 1992 (19,743,821 votes, 18.91 percent) and John Anderson in 1980 (5,719,850 votes, 6.61 percent).

1980 was also a good year for Libertarian candidate Ed Clark, whose 921,128 votes and 1.06 percent share of the total vote was the most successful performance by a presidential candidate in his party until Tuesday night.

Still, the Libertarians' first-ever presidential candidate, John G. Hospers, is their most successful candidate by a different measurement. Though he received only 3,674 total votes, he's still the only Libertarian Party presidential candidate to win an Electoral College vote.

Most candidates from the Libertarian Party, which was founded in December 1971, have typically garnered about 500,000 votes in their respective runs.

Johnson said he's buoyed by the results and plans to maintain his role as an advocate for limited government policies. However, when asked, he was unwilling to say whether his historic performance was enough to guarantee another run in 2016.

"It's too soon to be talking about 2016," he said.

Libertarian Party buoyant; Greens hopeful

Cravings for less Washington gave the Libertarian presidential entrant a record vote count while a tight Obama-Romney race hurt the Green Party, officials said.

The nearly 1.2 million votes won by Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson, a former two-term Republican New Mexico governor, supported public-opinion polls showing "consistently that a majority of Americans want less government than we have today," party Executive Director Carla Howell told United Press International.

Johnson, 59, who initially sought the presidential nomination of the Republican Party, won the Libertarian nod at the party's May national convention.

His nationwide vote count -- the highest count of the minor-party candidates -- represents about 1.2 percent of the total popular presidential vote in the 48 states in which Johnson ran, a UPI analysis of Tuesday's results indicated. Johnson was denied ballot positions in Michigan and Oklahoma.

His vote count also beat the previous Libertarian Party record, set in 1980 by lawyer-politician Ed Clark, of 921,128 votes, or 1 percent of the nationwide total.

Johnson had the strongest showing as a percentage of statewide presidential votes in Alaska, Maine, Montana, New Mexico and Wyoming, the UPI analysis showed. He had the weakest showing in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York and Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Howell told UPI Wednesday the voter desire for radically less government was so powerful that Johnson might have won Tuesday if the media had covered his campaign more fully and if the Commission on Presidential Debates had let him debate Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

"If he had been in the debates, he possibly would have been the president-elect right now," she told UPI.

The commission, which sponsors and produces the debates, is currently directed by former Republican National Committee Chairman Frank Fahrenkopf Jr. and former Clinton administration press secretary Mike McCurry, a Democrat.

Critics say the commission excludes third-party and independent candidates.

Barack Obama Wins Election Re Elected As President For 2012 - 2016 .NOVEMBER,6,2012
The 2012 United States presidential election is currently being held on Tuesday, November 6, 2012. It is the 57th quadrennial presidential election in which presidential electors, who will officially elect the president and the vice president of the United States on December 17, 2012, will be chosen. The exceptions to this being a tie amongst the electoral votes or if no candidate receives the minimum number of electoral votes needed to win the election, in which case the United States House of Representatives will choose the President voting by states, and the United States Senate will choose the Vice President. Incumbent Democratic President Barack Obama and Democratic Vice President Joe Biden are running for a second term during this election, the former being constitutionally limited to only two terms.[1] Their major challengers are the Republican Party nominee Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and his running mate, Congressman Paul Ryan. CNN, Fox News and others have projected the winner is Barack Obama and Joe Biden.[2][3] Four other candidates were mathematically eligible to win the election by a majority of the electoral college: former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, the Libertarian nominee;[4] and Jill Stein, the Green Party nominee, have attained ballot access sufficient to qualify for enough electoral votes to mathematically win the presidency.[5] Virgil Goode, the Constitution Party nominee, and Rocky Anderson, the Justice Party nominee, have the ...From:ItalFyahViews:2 0ratingsTime:03:01More inNews Politics

Hear Ye, Hear Ye! The Polls are now closed!
It #39;s time to see if I called this race correctly shorty after nln closes the polls. Do you knwo why Indiana was the first state on the map reporting in for Romney winning after the polls closed this evening. With efficiently managing the largest voter turnout in history. I closed the polls and ran the tapes down to the election board and 2nd set I delivered to the GOP before 7:30 pm . I got to see behind the black door the magic vote tally computer room for the first time what looked like a bookie operation. It #39;s time to focus on what went wrong with Romney #39;s campaign and why today #39;s record turnout and historic election. The GOP is still living in denial an hour ago after losing another Presidential Election The reaction tonight is that the GOP Status quo still think their conservative moral right values is still a popular vote across the nation and like I #39;ve been noting over the years. I #39;ve been projecting all year after the Republican Party Dejected Ron Paul at the convention and the 3rd Party margin of victory. Some twit me asked what swing state could of Ron Paul taken from lama? Which I replied...Maine is the first one and now looking over the results. Ron Paul won Nevada and Iowa too. Which shows why the 3rd party may in fact handed Obama a favor. I am still waiting for the numbers but it was very interesting here locally and the Ron Paul Libertarian Legion is now working on getting candidates elected as Martin Carbaugh was billed the hottest ticket in the state ...From:NoLinkNewsChannelViews:21 0ratingsTime:12:16More inEducation

Libertarian completes 5K runs for NC governor

Libertarian Barbara Howe is wrapping up her run - her athletic run - for North Carolina governor two days before Election Day.

Howe has made a point of running 5 kilometers in every county since May as part of her campaign. She plans to run in her 100th and final county Sunday afternoon by taking off from the Legislative Building in Raleigh and ending in front of the Executive Mansion.

Howe invited Democratic nominee Walter Dalton and Republican candidate Pat McCrory to Sunday's run and a news conference, but neither has responded. Dalton is attending a Bill Clinton rally Sunday afternoon.

Howe is making her third bid for governor. Her party won't have to collect signatures to stay on the ballot if she gets 2 percent of the vote.

Libertarian halts campaign for Del. insurance seat

By RANDALL CHASE Associated Press

DOVER, Del. (AP) - The Libertarian Party candidate for Delaware insurance commissioner is suspending his campaign and endorsing the Republican challenger seeking to unseat a Democratic incumbent.

David Eisenhour said Wednesday that while suspending his campaign for insurance commissioner, he is still running for clerk of the peace in Sussex County.

Eisenhour said he is urging his supporters to back Republican Benjamin Mobley in the insurance commissioner race. He said Mobley has a more free-market approach than does incumbent Karen Weldin Stewart, who won a three-way Democratic primary in September.

Eisenhour said that when he accepted Libertarian Party's nomination for insurance commissioner this spring, the only announced candidates were all Democrats, and that he thought voters deserved a choice.

But after Mobley entered the race, Eisenhour concluded that he was the best choice.

Libertarian Horning could play spoiler in Indiana Senate race

INDIANAPOLIS Libertarian Andrew Horning could draw enough votes to sway the outcome of Indiana's hotly contested U.S. Senate race between Republican Richard Mourdock and Democrat Joe Donnelly.

Horning might not be as recognizable as Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Rupert Boneham of "Survivor" television fame. But a Howey/DePauw Indiana Battleground Poll released last week found Horning garnering 6 percent support in the Senate race.

That would be about triple the vote share that Horning received as the Libertarian candidate for governor in 2008 and 2000. The Libertarian candidate for Indiana's Senate election two years ago topped 5 percent of the vote, so Horning could follow that trend.

Johnson satisfied with presidential run, mum on future bid for office

Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson says he's satisfied with his 2012 run, but he is keeping quiet on whether he'll take another shot at the White House or another elective office.

"Ours is a mission accomplished, Johnson told FoxNews.com. We put a true small-government, individual-freedom option on the ballot in virtually every state and have assembled an organization that will carry that message forward.

The long-shot candidate, a former New Mexico governor, knew he had essentially no chance of becoming the next U.S. president, but he argued on Election Day that he had delivered his message to the public and still wanted to get 5 percent of the vote. That would give the Libertarian Party equal access to federal funding in 2016 and easier access to ballots in all 50 states.

Johnson ran first as a Republican candidate in the primaries but appeared in only one debate because he was too low in the polls.

Supporters think federal funding would help a Libertarian in the next presidential cycle have enough resources to get to 15 percent in national polls, enough to enter the presidential debates.

The 59-year-old Johnson thanked supporters Tuesday and said the 2012 campaign was just a step in the movement that we will absolutely carry on."

Still, he was taciturn about the meaning of we specifically whether he plans to run again for elected office.

Johnson said he fully expects to remain a messenger for a liberty, small-government agenda.

But it is too soon to be talking about 2016," he added.

Spokeswoman Natalie Dicou said Johnsons only plans now are to get ready for the ski season and to chickpea in Argentina with his family.
