Manitowoc - As a Libertarian candidate for a U.S. Senate seat from Wisconsin, Joe Kexel knows he doesn't have a chance of defeating Democrat Tammy Baldwin or Republican Tommy Thompson. He says he'd just be happy to finish with 5% of the vote.

He says he's running to provide an alternative for voters who think their only option Tuesday is the lesser of two evils.

Kexel is an information-technology specialist from Kenosha. He says he's spent under $1,000 of his own money on his campaign, in a race where total spending could be in the $50 million range.

Kexel says he favors fiscal responsibility, lower taxes and a smaller military. A Manitowoc Herald Times report says he hopes he'll get votes from people turned off by the negativity of the whole Senate campaign.

Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson said he knows he has no shot of winning the presidential election, but he hopes to make a name for his partys movement.

The former Republican governor of New Mexico said for every time 5,000 people say Obamas name, his name is mentioned once. Johnson is on the ballot in 48 states, hes a write-in in Michigan and hes not on the ballot at all in Oklahoma. Johnson knows his number of supporters doesnt compare to those of Romney or Obama.

Even though Johnson may not be as well known, more than 1,000 people showed up to see the governor at a rally at Stringz and Wingz in Streetsboro.

The crowd was mostly white males, who dont sway liberal or conservative but tend to sit in the middle on social and financial issues. However, the libertarian party is popular among of those who support the legalization of marijuana.

Ben Stover, 24, of Louisville, said he was a Democrat but has issues with Obama and plans to vote for Johnson.

The two main parties are out of control, Stover said. These parties are going to be the downfall of this country because even though they really are similar, they pretend that theyre not and dont ever agree. This is not the way our forefathers intended our country to be.

One of the issues that matters most to Stover is the legalization of hemp and cannabis.

Hemp and marijuana have so many uses that not legalizing them is a waste of valuable resources and potential revenue, Stover said. Marijuana and hemp can be taxed when its sold, which will help reduce our deficit.

Candidate Johnson agreed that the libertarian party is known as the pot party and said he plans to legalize if he wins.

Libertarian Andrew Horning channeled John Lennon at an Oct. 23 debate among candidates for a U.S. Senate seat from Indiana.

People say Im a dreamer. You know, Im not the only one, Horning said, drawing chuckles from the audience in New Albany.

Turning serious, Horning pointed to the candidates flanking him Rep. Joe Donnelly, D-2nd, and Republican state Treasurer Richard Mourdock and told audience and TV viewers: You dont have to choose this. You can do better than this.

Horning is dreaming if he thinks he has a chance to win election Tuesday. But he could wind up as a nightmare for Republicans.

Hornings election history shows he is good for 2 percent to 4 percent of the vote. He has run for governor, Indianapolis mayor and a seat in the U.S. House attracting nearly 44 percent of the vote when he was a Republican congressional candidate in 2004.

If the race between Donnelly and Mourdock is as close as some polls and many pundits have suggested, the ultraconservative Horning could be the spoiler.

I think he could take quite a few votes from Mourdock, said Ray Scheele, a political scientist at Ball State University.

Scheele called Horning a pretty good landing spot for die-hard supporters of six-term Sen. Richard Lugar who are still bitter over Lugars loss to Mourdock in the Republican primary election but who cant bring themselves to vote for a Democrat.

Horning disputed the assessment, saying Thursday in a phone interview that his non-Libertarian supporters are mostly Democrats.

Every percent I get is something that rankles the powers that be, Horning said. You hear their rhetoric; they say Im stealing votes from this or that (candidate).

Gary Johnson seeks 5 percent in upcoming election

Libertarian candidate for president Gary Johnson has several new campaign ads running in markets across the country.

Johnson is making a push to get 5 percent of the general election vote. He said it would officially qualify the Libertarian Party for federal funding.

"That would make the Libertarian Party a bonafide third party, it would open up the Libertarian Party to get federal matching funds and looking forward to 2016 it would really open up some opportunities that really don't exist right now," Johnson said.

The candidate supports pulling out of Afghanistan now, ending the war on drugs, balancing the budget and marriage equality.

Libertarian college students from across the Southeast will descend on Chapel Hill for the first time this weekend.

About 150 will convene at the University for one of the fifth annual Students For Liberty regional conferences.

Its going to be a busy weekend for us, said Megan Roberts, communications manager for Students for Liberty.

I am excited to see how the conference in Chapel Hill goes, she said. This is our third time in North Carolina, but our first time at UNC.

It is intended to bring together not only libertarians, but also students from all affiliations to discuss grassroots politics, economic planning, student activism and community organizing.

Students for Liberty runs conferences all across the country and all across the world every fall, said David Deerson, co-president of UNCs chapter of Young Americans for Liberty and the Southeast regional director for Students for Liberty.

Since its creation in 2008, Students for Liberty has held regional conferences every fall, which help students network and build connections.

This years conference, which is free and open to the public, will include two keynote speakers David Boaz and Fred Smith.

Boaz, the executive vice president of the libertarian-leaning Cato Institute, will discuss political topics, policy issues and philosophical stances in order to grow and improve the libertarian movement.

Smith, president and founder of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, another libertarian organization, will also talk about social and foreign policy.

Students for Liberty comes to Chapel Hill

Libertarian Party challenger Bruce Majors won't beat D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, something he's basically admitted. But that doesn't mean he won't try to get some shots in on her in the process.

Today Majors launched a website urging Norton to return $50,000 in donations received from Jeffrey Thompson, the businessman and D.C. contractor at the heart of the shadow campaign scandal still engulfing Mayor Vince Gray, since 2006.

While Gov. Martin O'Malley and President Obama have returned any donations from Thompson, in July Norton said she didn't think that the money was suspect. Other D.C. politicians who have received money from Thompson, including Councilmember Vincent Orange (D-At Large), also haven't returned money they got from him.

Thompson, who was once one of the biggest givers to local politicians, has become embroiled in the scandal surrounding Gray's 2010 mayoral campaign. According to court documents, he's accused of working to funnel donations through third parties, effectively exceeding campaign finance limits. In the mayoral race that Gray won, Thompson was said to have helped fund a $653,000 shadow campaign.

Majors told us recently that he doesn't think that he can unseat Nortonbut that's not really the point. A bigger goal, he said, is to attract 7,500 votes so that the Libertarian Party can gain major party status in D.C.
