It seems that every few months the architecture world marvels at the latest 3D-printed prototype or art installation and wonders at the future possibilities. But to a surprising extent, the future is already here. Companies worldwide are automating the construction of homes, offices, and other structures through techniques like 3D printing, robotic finishing, and automated bricklaying. And as more join this cluband governments and investors ramp up their supportthe possibility of automation soon becoming the norm in construction is not so farfetched, addressing construction efficiency, sustainability, and even labor and housing shortages.

3D printing [on a wide scale] is a lot closer than I thought, notes Eric Holt, assistant professor at the Franklin L. Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management at the University of Denver. I used to believe it was at least five years out, but the ball has moved really quickly.

The start-up that first shifted Holts thinking was Oakland, Californiabased Mighty Buildings, which has already completed accessory dwelling units (ADUs) called Mighty Mods in Oakland, San Diego, San Ramon, and Hayward, California, employing a combination of high-tech composites, 3D printing (also known as contour crafting or additive manufacturing), 3D scanning, and robotic finishing. The company is now partnering with California-based architecture firm EYRC to produce single-family Mighty Houses, which contain up to three bedrooms and range in price from $287,500 to $409,500, and hopes to join forces with developers to create multifamily housing communities and more.

Mighty Buildings cofounder Sam Ruben says that the company can produce its units in two or three weeks, at a cost thats about 40 percent lower than similar-quality construction and with almost zero construction waste. Walls are printed via a gantry supported, free-moving 3D printer applying layers of a thermoset composite, which hardens into a stonelike materialsimilar in strength to concretethat is lightweight, self-supporting, and insulating. (Most companies install rebar in 3D-printed concrete after it is laid, a more time-consuming and costly process.) After printing is complete, a 3D scanner ensures that the structure matches the original digital file. Then robotic arms from German manufacturer KUKA give the homes texture, detailing, and functionality using varying heads that perform tasks like milling and spraying.

We have a severe shortage of housing in this country, says Ruben. We need a better way to build it. Some of his firms biggest remaining challenges include expediting permitting and moving into mass production.

China is also demanding faster, more efficient, and less wasteful construction. Its leader, and arguably the industrys trailblazer, is WinSun Decoration Design Engineering Co., a company with offices throughout the Peoples Republic and abroad. Founded in 2003, it began 3D-printing building components, and now prints entire buildings (its printer is 20 feet high, 40 feet wide, and 120 feet long). WinSun claims many of the firsts in the business, including the worlds first batch of 3D-printed buildings (ten structures in Shanghais Qingpu District); a five-story residence in Suzhou, which is the worlds tallest 3D-printed building; and the worlds first 3D-printed villa in a not-so-subtle French Second Empire style. Upcoming WinSun projects are even more ambitious, and in 2017 it signed a memorandum of understanding with AECOM, which will expand its efforts globally.

Dubai, another construction superpower, currently has the worlds most ambitious policy to promote automated construction: an official 3D Printing Strategy. Launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 2016, it calls for 25 percent of buildings to be 3D-printed by 2030. A major symbolic step forward for this plan was the 3D printing of the Dubai Office of the Future. Completed in 2016, it was the worlds first fully occupied office complex to be built with 3D-printing technology. The 2,700-square-foot office (built in a collaboration between WinSun, Gensler, Thornton Tomasetti, Syska Hennessy Group, and Dubai-based Killa Architectural Design) was also created layer by layer via a gantry printer. It took roughly 17 days to print and cost about $140,000 to create, not including finishing.

The project also clarified the learning curve associated with the new technology, points out Benjamin Piper, design principal and partner at Killa, which managed unforeseen issues with material tolerances, thermal barriers, site logistics, and discrepancies between digital models and physical reality. (Owing to bureaucratic and intellectual property issues, the printed building segments were shipped from China rather than being printed on the ground in Dubai.) Killa recently finished up Dubais Museum of the Future, just down the street, a torus-shaped building with a 3D-printed concrete frame and 3D-cut cladding taking the shape of Arabic calligraphy.

The freedom of form enabled by 3D printing is also being exploited in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, where Project Milestonea partnership between the city, Eindhoven University of Technology, Houben/Van Mierlo Architects, Van Wijnen Group, investor Vesteda, and othersis creating a community of five curving homes in Bosrijk, a wooded neighborhood near the citys airport. The projects first home will be completed this year: a single-story, roughly 1,000-square-foot building that will be followed by four multistory residences.

Their curving, contour-crafted shapes, notes Theo Salet, dean of the Department of the Built Environment at Eindhoven University of Technology, allow for concrete to be applied only where needed, meaning far less waste. (The team applied rebar in the wet concrete via an automated filament system and injected insulation, which helped support the thin concrete planes.) They also fit into their rural setting, like natural shapes. It will look as if five stones had landed in a field, says Rudy van Gurp, a project spokesperson.

Salet embarked on the project to seek improvements in the slow-moving construction industry, namely more affordable housing, more sustainable use of materials, and a safer building environment for workers. Working on each home, he says, will provide insights for the next. Its a continuous learning process, notes Cristina Nan, a specialist in emerging architectural technologies who is working on the subsequent homes. While such an approach is more sustainable than traditional construction, the use of concrete is still quite carbon intensive. One possible solution is TECLA, an automated home-building system developed by New York and Bologna, Italybased Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA) and 3D-printer manufacturer WASP. The technology employs robotic arms and a mixture of local earth, water, and rice husks to create bulbous homes that can be tailored (in shape, material, density, orientation, etc.) to their local climate and vernacular. MCA architect Irene Giglio, who describes TECLA units as growing out of each place, says their first unit will be inaugurated in March, and the team hopes to expand the system quickly after that.

These examples are just the tip of a 3D-printed iceberg, as the number of companies incorporating additive manufacturing grows. Others are taking more targeted approaches to construction automation. For automated bricklaying there is Construction Robotics SAM (Semi-Automated Mason) and Fastbrick Robotics Hadrian X, which can lay bricks and other masonry pieces more than three times as fast as humans. For formwork there is Odicos robotic hot wire cutter, which can create curved, intricate molds. For rebar tying there is Advanced Construction Robotics TyBot. Rovers like Effidences EffiBOT can carry construction materials on-site, while Doxels lidar-equipped rover can carry out site inspections. Built Robotics Autonomous Dozer replaces manned bulldozers, while Volvos TA15 can haul 15 tons of material without a driver.

And while theyre still notoriously risk-averse, builders worldwideseeing potential improvements in cost, productivity, and safetyare incorporating automation into their processes one piece at a time, says Dennis Steigerwalt, president of the Housing Innovation Alliance, an industry think tank. Larger builders are employing components, panels, and sometimes entire modules created using robots, while smaller companies move closer to an almost fully automated factory environment.

Steigerwalt says its just a matter of time until we reach the tipping point. If you can achieve scale, you can bring the cost down. Over time you can see it being less expensive, less wasteful, less risky, and higher quality. Not everyone needs to build this way, but once you get the wheel running, there will be a solid position for this within the U.S. economy.

Verizon targets robot automation with Incubed IT deal – Mobile World Live

US operator Verizon inked a deal to acquire Austria-based software company Incubed IT for an undisclosed sum, aiming to broaden its range of 5G services for enterprise to include robot automation.

Incubed ITs software allows industrial robots to navigate autonomously and includes a navigation toolkit, fleet management system to coordinate multiple robots, and data monitoring and analytics reporting services.

The deal is expected to close in H1, with Incubed ITs employees set to join Verizons New Business Incubation team.

Elise Neel, VP of Verizon New Business Incubation, stated the combination of the operators 5G network with Incubed ITs software will enable faster, less expensive and more effective adoption of robotic automation for enterprises everywhere.

Incubed ITs website states it has approximately 30 employees, and more than 75 active projects with over 50 customers, highlighting applications of its technology in warehouse and production facilities.

Verizon recently ramped efforts to hone next-generation enterprise use cases, teaming with companies including Unity Technologies; SAP; Deloitte and Emory Healthcare to trial applications spanning AR/VR, 3D content, smart manufacturing and supply chain operations.

Operator executives previously said they expect testing of enterprise applications to continue in 2021 and revenue from these to become significant in 2022.

Furthermore, attempting to convince clients to pay more for what they previously paid less for is a difficult ask and can leave the firm in an unfavorable light.

Even before considering client financial prudence and reluctance to pay higher rates, law firms have an ethical obligation requiring lawyers to ensure their bills are reasonable. What law firms really need to do is look internally at inefficiencies and how they affect revenues to solve the root problem.

Time-consuming billing review is done not only to ensure that clients receive accurate bills and not dispute unreasonable fees, but to comply with the ABA Model Rules requiring lawyers to ensure their bills are reasonable. Attorneys must exercise billing judgment, and make a good-faith effort" to exclude charges and expenses that are excessive, redundant, or otherwise unnecessary."

Yet, a majority of law firms say that it takes them up to two weeks to clean up their invoices before they are even ready to be sent to clients, according to a 2019 Aderant survey. This necessary step of the invoicing process calls for efficiency and automation.

Last year saw an immediate shift in many broadcasters studio workflow due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This spring, well be looking at how the lessons from work from home and reduced staffing will impact future productions.

Although established for a long time, we do see further moves to full automation. Robotics need to be left to operate live on-air for long periods of time, perhaps with no operator or an operator carrying out several other critical roles. Shotoku now has an automatic face tracking system which makes that goal that a reality in many applications, said James Eddershaw, managing director at Shotoku Broadcast Systems.

The most significant change in workflow is going to be in higher degrees of automation, and closer integration with other studio systems. This will enable the team of studio operators to produce more content more efficiently, explained Vintens product manager, Neil Gardner.

Studio robotics will continue to get smarter, reducing the need for human intervention. Todays studio robots can recall any saved shot, quickly and accurately, which eliminates the need for a camera operator to manually position the camera. Systems are emerging that can automatically account for slight movements by the talent or perhaps different talent (height, hairstyle, etc. can affect the framing of the shot) from day to day. This is typically taken care of by the camera operator, whether through live adjustments while on-air, or by re-framing and updating the presets just before going on-air. If this can be done automatically, it further reduces the burden on the camera operator, potentially eliminating the need for a human camera operator during the production altogether, said Karen Walker, VP of camera motion systems atRoss Video.

This is particularly important in workflows that use production automation, where quite often the person responsible for running the automation system is also tasked with ensuring that the cameras are properly framed. As these automation systems become more adept at compensating not just small for movements for a subject sitting at a desk, but being able to create natural, smooth tracking shots for a subject that is moving around the set in an unscripted production such as a variety show or live event, they will further reduce our dependence on manual intervention, improving production quality and lowering operational expenses, continued Walker.

We envision a steady evolution towards fully automated production workflow that integrates robotic cameras, dollies, and sophisticated one-touch motion presets which include both PTZ and dolly position changes and speeds, predicted Rush Beesley, the president of Rushworks.

The control room of the future will have to be adaptable to its location and size. Having the flexibility of combining multiple pieces of equipment into a single panel is also critical when space is even more of a constraint (in a home control room for example), answered Michael Cuomo, VP at Telemetrics.

For those working in studios, safety and distancing are paramount and will continue to be in the future. Were already seeing this feedback from customers in the vein of camera control, as limited staff must rely on technology to streamline their workflows, said Bob Caniglia, director of sales operations forBlackmagic Design.

PTZ cameras have come a long way as it relates to image quality and VR output, but the limited lens and pan/tilt performance will continue to be a limiting factor in most broadcast environments, Eddershaw said.

For robotics camera control, an integrated PTZ is just another remote camera to operate. They offer a simple solution for more camera positions, especially supplemental positions which are less critical to program output, places where there is limited space or are more exposed than is appropriate for a full broadcast camera, lens and remote robotic support system. They are also ideal for quick, short-term installation in non-studio environments such as someone doing a broadcast from their home office, Gardner explained.

PTZ cameras are definitely having an impact on almost every market vertical when it comes to robotic camera systems. We are increasingly seeing them in broadcast studios around the world, as well as in other verticals where they are used extensively. While their performance and functionality continue to improve (as chip technology advances), there are still limitations that prevent them from completely taking over in all applications, said Walker.

We still see many instances where either their optical performance (focal length, low light performance, etc.) or functionality (limited ability for on-air movement) prevent them from meeting requirements, and customers opt for studio cameras and lenses. However, the increased adoption of these cameras cannot be overlooked, and as they improve and evolve, we can expect that they will continue to move into more and more applications, added Walker.

AI has been and will continue to be a big trend in the year ahead. Its being heavily integrated into our products to make them easier to use. The other big trend were seeing is remote setup and support. Before, we would always have to send out resources to get a system configured, but were doing more remote commissioning than ever before. This is a huge benefit because customers can get the same support that normally wouldve required on-site trained technical staff and also saves on travel costs. With remote training and troubleshooting, staff does not need to be as technical, especially when there is just a single person operating out of a home studio, Cuomo suggested.

"Having cameras basically removes the human element. It's just a machine. It clocks you going too fast or it clocks you going through an intersection too late into the light cycle," said Allison Carpenter, traffic subcommittee chair.

The idea could face hurdles in the Virginia General Assembly. Right now, speed cameras can only be placed in work or school zones. The law also limits the number of red-light cameras in a jurisdiction.

In its report, the working group also proposed traffic fines based on a sliding income scale. People who make less would pay less for violations like red light or speed cameras.

The group has also recommended increasing resources and partnerships between mental health providers that would allow police to limit responses to such calls. It also called for a citizen review board with investigative and subpoena power.

Some of the recommendations could be instituted by the county board in weeks or months, while others are more long-term in nature. They also depend upon the county's new budget, which will be discussed this week.

Salesforce offers intelligent document automation in conjunction with AWS tool – Healthcare IT News

Salesforce on Wednesday announced the release of an Intelligent Document Automation tool aimed at allowing healthcare and life sciences companies to digitize document-management processes.

The tool, which can be used in combination with the company's Amazon Web Services Textract-powered Intelligent Form Reader, is designed to increase the efficiency and accuracy of health-document workflows.

WHY IT MATTERS

The company noted that legacy systems such as paper and fax documents can lead to operational challenges, including having to manually enter information into electronic health records.

IDA for Health Cloud is intended to simplify the document-management process, said Salesforce.

According to the company, the new tool can help provider, payer, pharmaceutical and medical-device organizations:

"An intake coordinator at a home health agency can log into Health Cloud to pull a patient-referral form from their queue, edit or remove any irrelevant or unnecessary pages, attach the document to the right patient record and confirm relevant patient data was automatically populated to the appropriate fields in Health Cloud," explained Salesforce VP of Health Cloud Amit Khanna in a blog post accompanying the announcement.

"Later, not only can the intake coordinator reference the document, but if any of the patient data extracted from the form or document is incorrect, the intake coordinator is also able to edit and update the field if needed," Khanna added.

The company highlighted Nizhoni Health, a Massachusetts-based home healthcare agency, as an example of the way healthcare organizations can leverage intelligent documentation automation.

"Nizhoni Health will start to roll out IDA to help its staff intelligently assign incoming referral documents from different sources, like fax and email, to patient records in Salesforce. IDA capabilities will be deployed to help Nizhoni improve manual processing and deliver the right home healthcare to the right patients, faster," said Khanna.

THE LARGER TREND

The IDA tool joins a suite of other Health Cloud services offered by Salesforce, including care collaboration features, social determinants of health capabilities and provider relationship management tools.

The IT giant has also been tapped by healthcare organizations to launch their own platforms, including Humana in 2020.

Automation Wont Take All The Manufacturing Jobs And Covid Proves It. Heres How – Forbes

Covid-19 has brought the automation doomsayers out in full force and handed them plenty of ammo. In an attempt to minimize public health risks and cut down on costs, toll collectors in Pennsylvania have been replaced by license plate scanners, Bay Area hotels have introduced room-service robots and retail and fast-food jobs worldwide have gone the way of cashier-less transactions.

The pandemic, according to the automation skeptics, has accelerated our transition to a future state where robots have taken all our jobs. And they may be right. If history is any indication, its unlikely that humans will be working as toll collectors or cashiers once those jobs have been automated.

But it would be unfair and inaccurate to lump manufacturing in with this future state, as many have these past few months. Despite recent headlines (Robots are coming for you!) and reports like this one from McKinsey saying that manufacturing employment is one of the areas most vulnerable to automation in coming years, the fact of the matter is that the job losses from automation have largely already occurred in manufacturing. The thousands and thousands of vacant manufacturing jobs available today amid sky-high unemployment numbers represent just one proof point.

Rather than tainting manufacturing with the stain of a fully automated future, we should be encouraging those who have lost (or fear losing) jobs to automation in other sectors to look toward manufacturing. Meanwhile, the industry itself should focus on the real challenge training workers for the new, high-skilled jobs created by automation while embracing the technology investment that will keep U.S. industry competitive.

A Brief History Of Automation In Manufacturing

Theres no avoiding the fact that automation in manufacturing has, historically speaking, led to a decline in jobs. But thats not the whole story for in the long term, automation has also created new high-skilled, and highly paid, jobs for American workers.

I would know. I run an organization that consults for manufacturers. Our mission is to help them create new products, streamline operations, adopt new technologies and sell more of their products all to grow jobs in manufacturing. Yet for 35 years my organization has also helped manufacturers automate. Weve built machines that produce candy bars, auto parts, dog toys, military products and everything in between.

Youre absolutely correct if youre thinking, Isnt the purpose of automation to reduce costs by cutting headcount?Its true that we do the calculations of whether or not a new machine is worth the cost based on how much operator time it can reduce and how much quality it can increase. After all, its this technological advancement and investment that allows us to make more in the U.S. than we ever have before with 80% fewer people than we did 60 years ago.

But thats not the whole story. In the long term, automation has proven not to be a perfect correlate to fewer jobs. If the technology does what its supposed to, the business will ultimately grow and create new, high-skilled jobs for American workers. This has long been the case: Way back when, the automation of the cotton textile and primary steel industries led to rapid job growth (from roughly 1850 to 1950).

Whats more, the decline in manufacturing jobs in more recent history cant be chalked up solely to automation. Depending on whom you ask, its also the fault of lower overall output, shifting demographics and/or China.

Today, examples abound of companies who hire more workers by embracing automation. Utah-based Wing Enterprises invested in welding robot systems to meet rising demand; it helped them expand from 20 to 400 employees. Other manufacturers have invested in labor reinstating technologies, such as collaborative robots or IoT sensors that can provide maintenance mechanics with real-time data. Meanwhile, new research shows that companies investing heavily in AI have actually grown their workforces, and a recent survey of middle market manufacturers with annual growth rates of over 10% revealed that 45% said employment amid technology investment would stay the same; 28% said thered be an increase in jobs.

In other words, the future is already here for manufacturing. The mass exodus of low-skill, low-cost labor mostly to overseas competitors already happened.Those jobs are never coming back, and we dont want them to. Were not going back to paying people $1 an hour to sew or assemble.We want people managing technology that can do those simple tasks for us. We want people to realize that the very thing theyre fearing is what can make their jobs better.That is our future.

What Manufacturers Should Do Now

The real concern with automation is not job losses, but the long-term consequences of all this automation to our countrys wealth disparities.If manufacturing continues to automate (which is unstoppable), continues to get more productive (which it must) and continues to provide better-paying, higher-wage jobs for its people (which is a necessary outcome), then wealth disparity will increase.And people without manufacturing jobs, like those laid off as fast food is automated, will have even less.

This is true for any industry navigating automation, and unfortunately, there is no simple solution. One thing we can do today is try to get a diverse makeup of people into manufacturing now so that at least the wealth isnt concentrated in white-male-dominated suburbs as it has historically been

At the same time, though, we can drop the fearmongering about manufacturing job losses.In fact, we can focus more on getting people into manufacturing to solve the industrys number one issue: They cant find enough people.We have the opportunity today to create pipelines from low-skill, low-paid jobs to good career paths in manufacturing through awareness, education and training. Obstacles remain: For example, a recent Deloitte survey showed that nearly 60% of organizations introducing intelligent automation have yet to even gauge how much of their workforce has seen changes to roles, tasks and ways of working.

Despite the challenges ahead, I hope the next time someone writes about the threat of jobs being taken by automation, they leave manufacturing out of it and perhaps even suggest that those at risk of losing their jobs actually seek out manufacturing. Ironically, its because of automation that these are going to be good jobs for many, many years to come.

CAQH 2020 Index: Automating Healthcare Administrative Transactions Has Reduced Annual Costs by $122 Billion, $16.3 Billion More Can Be Saved Through…

WASHINGTON, Feb. 3, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- CAQHtoday released the eighth annual report measuring the progress made by healthcare payers and providers in automating administrative transactions. The 2020 CAQH Indexfound that, of the $372 billion widely cited as the cost of administrative complexity in the US healthcare system, the industry can save $16.3 billion by fully automating nine common transactions. This savings opportunity is on top of the $122 billion in costs the healthcare industry has avoided by streamlining administrative processes.Levels of automation have increased for both the medical and dental industries since the last report, while the opportunity for further savings has also risen by $3 billion annually.This is largely due to a drop in costs for automated processes and higher costs for manual and partially electronic portal processes alongside increasing volumes.

"This year's report found that adoption of electronic processes generally increased across the medical and dental industries," said Kristine Burnaska, Director of Research and Measurement at CAQH. "The data also indicates that future efforts to automate could yield even greater returns."

The CAQH Index tracks automation, spending and savings opportunities for administrative transactions related to verifying patient insurance coverage and cost sharing, obtaining authorization for care, submitting claims and supplemental information and sending and receiving payments. The report categorizes transactions by whether they are fully automated, partially electronic or manual. The 2020 Index collected data from health plans and providers through the 2019 calendar year and thus excludes the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare administrative transactions.

While the industry has already avoided $122 billion annually by automating these transactions, up $20 billion from last year, the Index pinpointed opportunities for additional savings. For example, each fully automated claims status inquiry costs $11.71 less than the same transaction conducted manually for the medical industry and $10.92 less for the dental industry. Similarly, every eligibility and benefit verification converted from manual to electronic saves the medical industry $8.64 and the dental industry $8.75. Considering the millions of times these transactions occur every day, the savings potential across the healthcare economy is significant.

The 2020 Index also revealed that the costs associated with some manual and partially electronic portal transactions are increasing. This may be because, as healthcare business needs become more complex, manual processes to accommodate them are becoming more labor intensive and expensive. This further suggests that updates are needed to electronic transactions to address increasingly complex business needs that are today being addressed outside of the standard transactions.

Prior authorization achieved the greatest year-over-year progress, although it continues to be conducted manually more often than any other transaction. Electronic adoption of prior authorization transactions rose eight percentage points more than any other transaction studied saving the industry $9.64 per transaction.

Munich Re is banking on automated underwriting as a key to unlocking Nigerias insurance market as it rolls out its service in West Africa for the first time.

The reinsurer has supplied its automated underwriting to an unnamed South African insurer that has expanded into Nigeria, says Paul Donnelly, executive vice-president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Munich Re Automation Solutions in Dublin. It will be technically feasible for the service be up and running this year, subject to the final decision of the unnamed client, he adds.

Donnelly argues that automation and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) makes underwriting decisions fairer and more efficient. The technique is suited to African markets, many of which lack capability and an insurance culture, he says. The technology can do some of the heavy work.

In South Africa, Munich Re counts Sanlam, Old Mutual and Liberty among its clients, and also has a corporate customer in Egypt.

But in less-developed African markets, the data used to feed its machine learning may not exist. That leads to an element of flying blind, Donnelly says.

However, Nigeria has one of the worlds lowest rates of insurance penetration, and the market is dominated by mandatory third-party car policies. Cultural resistance among customers and the difficulty of establishing cost-effective sales are among the reasons for the weak market. That suggests gathering customer data will be an uphill struggle.

Automated underwriting in Nigeria has everything to prove in the face of obstacles in data collection that have not been encountered in South Africa.
