Spiritually Speaking: Beware those seeking a pat on the back – The Philadelphia Tribune

My mother used to have a phrase when she was alive. Usually referring to me and my attitude when I thought I had done something particularly noteworthy. She used it when describing somebody who started acting like they were better than someone else or, basically felt their No. 2 didnt stink. She would say that person was simply, smelling him or herself. I came to see it as fishing for a compliment.

The Bible says unless your deeds are done to glorify God rather than yourself, you smellin yoself. Im here to tell you its at these times that one ought to be very careful because spiritually, youre entering deep water. Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward in heaven. Matthew 6:1.

It appears that intent and motivation are the true indicators of a persons real character and ultimately how he or she is viewed by God. Doing the right thing for the wrong reasons gets you nothing, zilch, nada. I mean, supposedly, if you are trying to impress friends and family, or trying to receive honors from your fellow man for doing good deeds, youre smelling yourself and sorely in need of some Right Guard.

Doing what you know is right, from forgiving your enemies, turning the other cheek, helping the less fortunate, speaking truth to power, these are the things that are supposed to be done so that others might see the deed(s) as glorifying the Almighty; not, so that people will be impressed with you. Even in prayer, the bible says, But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. your Father will reward you. Matthew 6:6.

Havent we all been unimpressed with someone who appears to sincerely help us or help another person out of what appears to be the goodness of their heart, only to find them with their hands out to get theirs, or their backs turned so the world can pat them on it? God tells us in His own ways that if you do that, talk to the Hand because the ears aint listening. You dont give to receive and you dont love to be loved.

Thats blackmail. Thats extortion. Its impure and spiritually unacceptable. Give because you want to and love because its who you are. Anything else is a fraud and an affront to Jesus who gave His all and loved unconditionally, so that we all might live. In the same way let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise the father in heaven. Matthew 5:16.

Granted, walking around with that level of purity in ones heart might be a bit much for most of us, present company included. However, its pretty easy to know, acknowledge and understand that the real reason we reach out to someone else is to be seen as a good person by others. We all want to be highly thought of by our peers, our parents and those closest to us. But in reality, only God counts when it comes to appreciating who we really are. Anything else is show. The rest is ego. Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 186:18.

All of this points to being true to ones self, then talking the talk and walking the walk. The echo of mother wit resonates in my mind as I try to remember exactly what mom was trying to teach me about myself. Before I get too full of me, the real test just might be a good whiff of the fragrance underneath my arm. Nobody can pour anything into a full vessel. How you smellin today?

May God bless and keep you always.

The lord of all beginnings – The New Indian Express

What is the secret behind the immense popularity of the elephant-headed, pot-bellied, broken-tusked god who travels on a mouse? What does he signify? Ganesha is believed to be the lord of success who blesses people with their desired objectives.

He is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of the arts and sciences, and the god of intellect and wisdom. As the god of beginnings, he is worshipped at the start of every enterprise, rite or ceremony.

Ganesha signifies the goal of perfection that we are all seeking. The byproducts are unimaginable success and happiness. Every little detail conveys a deep concept that we can integrate in our lives to achieve our aspirations.

Legend says that Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from the turmeric paste she used while bathing. She then infused life into the mould and set him to guard the door while she went in to bathe. When Lord Shiva returned, Ganesha did not allow him to enter. Enraged at being denied entry to his own home, Lord Shiva beheaded Ganesha.

When Parvati came to know about the incident, she was heartbroken. She asked for him to be brought back to life and that he should always be worshipped before any other god. Shiva agreed to both conditions. He replaced her sons head with that of the first living being his troops encountered. Thus the elephant-headed Ganesha was born. Till this day, Ganesha has pride of place in the Indian customs and traditions. All auspicious occasions and new ventures begin with a prayer to Ganesha.

It is said that sage Vyasa requested Ganesha to write the Mahabharata as he composed it. Ganesha agreed on the condition that Vyasa would recite the epic continuously. Vyasa put down a counter-stipulation that Ganesha must understand every verse dictated. When Vyasa needed a break he would compose a difficult verse that gave him the much-needed respite! Popular legend says it took them three years of continuous effort to complete the epic.

Lord Shiva represents the Spirit, the life-giving Force. Ganesha is symbolic of a perfected Soul. He also shows the way to that exalted state.Lord Ganeshas head, the largest biological head, denotes the immense wisdom of a person of perfection. Wisdom comes when one reflects upon the knowledge gained from external sources. Ganeshas large ears show receptivity to new ideas and concepts. An open mind is the first step to obtaining wisdom.

Emerging from the Lords head is the elephant trunk. The trunk depicts a well-developed intellect that arises out of wisdom. The trunk can uproot a tree as well as pick a needle from a haystack. Similarly, the intellect is of two kinds, gross and subtle. The gross intellect discriminates between pairs of opposites in the world; black and white, hard and soft, easy and difficult. The subtle intellect, on the other hand, differentiates between right and wrong, permanent and impermanent, higher and lower. It is colloquially called the conscience.

In an enlightened person, both gross and subtle intellects are well developed. Such a person has clarity of thinking that enables him to negotiate the challenges of life. He also has a clear sense of right and wrong that helps steer him to the Divine. Choices become unambiguous and life becomes a lot simpler. Without clarity of thought, our worldview gets confused and coloured by our own prejudices and preconceptions.

One of the key attributes of a perfected Soul is that he has risen above likes and dislikes, and is unaffected by the pairs of opposites in the world. The joys and sorrows, the victories and losses do not topple him. He deals with life as a sportsperson plays a sport, understanding that in the end, it is only a game. This transcendence over the pairs of opposites is indicated by Lord Ganesha having one tusk broken.

When we rise above the ups and downs of life, we develop the capacity to stomach the challenges that life throws at us. This is depicted by Lord Ganeshas enormous stomach. One who attains the supreme state has the strength to remain untouched by even the greatest setbacks. Ganesha's posture with one foot on the ground and the other folded up conveys that while we need to operate in the world there must be a constant alignment with Atman, the Spirit. Whatever we do, there must be an unwavering focus on the higher goal. Without this focus, it is impossible to even succeed in the world.

The food at the feet of Lord Ganesha symbolises material wealth and power. The world amply rewards those who live a life of service and sacrifice. Those who turn spiritual acquire merit in their respective fields of activity and seldom go unacknowledged. They command the resources of the world, and earn fame and fortune even though they may not desire it.

The mouse as the Lords mode of transport magnifies the challenge that a spiritual person faces when trying to communicate the knowledge of the infinite Self through the finite equipment of body, mind and intellect. The mouse by the side of Ganesha represents desire. Just as the mouse is omnivorous, desire is all-consuming. It is never satisfied. Fulfil one desire and more pop up in its place. We fall prey to desire and remain subservient to it. An evolved person has complete mastery over desire. When desire is controlled by the intellect, what is an obsession, lust or craving transforms to aim, ambition and aspiration. This is far less stressful and you achieve the object of desire.

In his four hands, Lord Ganesha holds an axe, a rope, a modak (sweetened rice ball) and a lotus. The axe represents the annihilation of desire with the axe of spirituality. You need inner strength to overcome negativities. The rope is spiritual knowledge which helps us remove ourselves from the samsara, material world, that we are entrenched in.

The modak symbolises the happiness and joy a seeker derives from spiritual pursuit. And the lotus stands for that state of Self-Realisation that every human being aspires for, consciously or unconsciously. The lotus lives its entire life in dirty ponds, yet is untouched by it. Similarly, a person of Perfection lives in the world, interacts with it, enjoys life but remains untainted by identifying with the Self.

The occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi gives us, as spiritual aspirants, an opportunity to remember what Lord Ganesha stands for. A chance to reignite ourselves in the search for happiness.

Ayahuasca spiritual enhancers, arthritis cures and bone wine: The disturbing rise in the illegal jaguar trade – The Independent

A bewildering array of products derived from jaguar parts are driving an alarming increase in the poaching and trafficking of one of Latin Americas most iconic species.

Conservationists have reported that jaguar teeth and claws are being marketed as must-have accessories to tourists taking part in traditional ayahuasca ceremonies in Peru. A separate investigation uncovered tubs of a glue-like black paste, made from boiled jaguar carcasses, being smuggled to Asia as an expensive arthritis cure. Jaguar cubs are also known to have been scooped up as pets, only to be sold off for parts when they become too big to handle.

Wildlife trafficking is rising in Latin America, the richest biodiversity hotspot on the planet and home to around 40 per cent of the worlds plant and animal species. The illegal wildlife trade is an emerging threat on a continent that has historically lacked the large-scale conservation efforts of Africa and Asia.

Sharing the full story, not just the headlines

It highlights the urgency of our Stop The Illegal Wildlife Trade campaign, which was launched by The Independent's largest shareholder Evgeny Lebedev to call for an international effort to clamp down on the illegal trade of wild animals, one of the greatest threats to future biodiversity.

Jaguars face a myriad of threats, among them deliberate killings for their fangs, skulls, bones, skins, paws and meat.

The species teetered on the verge of extinction in the mid-20th century when some 18,000 jaguars were killed each year for their skins until, in 1975, international trade in jaguars was banned. Although hunting declined, jaguars still faced retaliatory attacks by humans protecting livestock, and by those who feared the large cats in remote areas.

An estimated 130,000 jaguars are left in the wild, where the solitary cats roam across 18 range countries. Population numbers have declined by around a quarter over the last three generations. They have been wiped out from almost 50 percent of their historic range and are extinct in Uruguay and El Salvador.

Increased poaching has been documented in the Amazon, where jaguars are largely concentrated, particularly in Brazil, Bolivia, Peru and the Guianas. Killings have also been reported in Suriname, Bolivia and Peru.

The species are particularly vulnerable to habitat destruction driven by the rampant deforestation and wildfires being set in the Amazon by land-grabbers for agricultural expansion, logging and mining. Following last years record deforestation and wildfires in the Amazon, last month was the worst June for blazes in 13 years.

Slashing and burning through the rainforest is a twin threat to jaguars: Both destroying their habitat and providing easier access to trophy hunters, criminal trafficking gangs and opportunistic poachers.

The chopping up of forest corridors leave jaguars particularly vulnerable. The solitary cats require expansive areas of land in which to roam, with males often traveling hundreds of miles to find a mate.

Trapping jaguars in isolated pockets of shrinking forest reduces their ability to hunt, reproduce and remain genetically diverse.

The explosion of trade routes between Latin America and Asia in the past decade, along with the establishment of Chinese-owned mining and logging operations in the region, has played a significant role in the increased demand for wildlife products.

A report last month from TRAFFIC, the NGO focused on trade in wild animals, found that much of the wildlife leaving Latin America is destined for markets in China, and possibly Southeast Asia.

A UN report this month also found that criminals can shift from protected species to alternatives that have a similar value. As tigers becoming increasingly rare in the wild and seizures of parts more common, traffickers are turning their attention to other big cats, including the jaguar, that can be passed off as tiger products.

In February 2018, two Chinese citizens were arrested in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia for possession of 185 jaguar teeth and three skins. In 2018, a criminal gang which had been operating in the Brazilian Amazon state of Acre for the past 30 years, were estimated to have killed more than a 1,000 jaguars, according to TRAFFIC.

But the illegal trade with China is far from the only issue as conservationists warn that further investigation is needed to understand the complex and interwoven threats.

A report last year established a link between illegal sales of jaguar parts and the ayahuasca and shamanic tourist trade.

Ayahuasca ceremonies, an ancient tradition where a psychoactive brew made from the ayahuasca vine and chakruna leaves are used for spiritual healing or specific physical ailments, have grown in popularity among foreign tourists flocking to Latin America.

Its big business: In Iquitos, Peru, a hub for ayahuasca lodges, ten of the 40 largest retreats make $6.5 million annually from foreign tourism, according to a 2015 study.

Along the peripheries, small vendors market jaguar body parts from roadside stalls or curio shops to ayahuasca tourists to enhance their spiritual experiences.

Alex Braczkowski, a researcher at the Resilient Conservation research group, at Griffith University in Australia, co-authored the 2019 study that emerged from a trip to the shamanic hubs of Iquitos, Lima and Pucallpa, Peru in 2017 as part of a National Geographic expedition.

We just happened to come across a ton of jaguar parts being openly sold in the streets and by roadside vendors, he told The Independent. They were selling jaguar bags, jaguar skin bracelets, knife sheaths and a lot of canine pendants with cross-sections of the ayahuasca vine stuck on. They were being marketed as a way to enhance the spiritual experience of ayahuasca ceremonies.

Jaguar skins were being sold for $49-$152, while a single paw could be bought for $9. A stuffed jaguar head was priced at $30$91 and jaguar canines cost anywhere from $61$122.

The study noted that local indigenous shamans and healers from the Pucallpa area denied the notion that jaguar parts enhance the ayahuasca experience for visiting tourists, and suggested that this practice is being marketed by charlatan shamans seeking financial gain from the ayahuasca boom".

Vendors were also willing to transport the skins internationally, using airport and customs agent contacts, according to the study. (Wildlife traffickers face up to five years in prison under Peruvian law.)

Dr Esteban Payan, South America Jaguar Program Regional Director for Panthera, the global wild cat conservation organisation, told The Independent the illegal trade in jaguar parts linked to the ayahuasca tourism industry, happens not only in Peru but throughout the Amazon region including in Colombia and Ecuador.

It has slowed down during the pandemic but it will be back with a vengeance, he said.

Naive backpackers believe that a jaguar canine, for example, will bring added power and a stronger high to their ayahuasca journey. But they dont think about what it means - to get that canine, a mother jaguar may have been killed, leaving cubs and reducing population numbers.

Jaguar parts are used in traditional medicines that claim to treat a host of ailments from arthritis pain to boosting sexual performance.

An investigation, conducted in 2018 by World Animal Protection (WAP) in Suriname, found a highly secretive hunting and trading chain where jaguars could be tracked for days before being shot multiple times.

Roberto Vieto, global campaign manager of Wildlife Not Pets World Animal Protection, told The Independent: Our investigation in Suriname exposes the extreme cruelty involved in the illegal wildlife trade of jaguar parts, which transforms the largest feline of the Americas into a glue-like paste product (with no scientific-proved benefits), their fangs into souvenirs, and in some cases, jaguar cubs into exotic pets kept in terrible conditions.

Almost half of Suriname citizens live in poverty and the illegal trade in jaguars is a lucrative means of support.

The investigation found that carcasses were sold by local hunters to Chinese middlemen for around $260, which were then marked up to $2,000-$3,000 in larger urban areas.

Jaguar carcasses were also being chopped and boiled into a glue-like black paste to apparently treat arthritis, researchers noted. Dozens of tubs were being smuggled out of Suriname to Asia, where each one sold for $785- $3,000. Jaguar penises were also being illegally shipped as a product to enhance virility.

Jaguar teeth and claws, some set in gold, were found by investigators in markets around Surinames capital Paramaribo. A tooth set in gold could fetch up to $1,200.

Jaguar carcasses are also sought by Chinese and Filipino communities in Suriname for meat and the bones used to make wine, according to the study.

Mr Vieto said that more must be done to elevate the status of the jaguar as critically important to diverse ecosystems.

Additional efforts should be placed to educate about the ecological value of the species in their natural habitat, improving the coexistence to reduce the conflict with wild animals, and discourage completely the use of wild animal parts as medicine and substitute this by sustainable herbal alternatives, he said.

At an international level, there is a growing recognition that more must be done to protect jaguars. They are currently listed as Nearly Threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List though their status may be elevated to vulnerable due to recent trends.

In 2018, 14 countries where the jaguar roams, along with international conservation groups, Panthera, World Wildlife Fund, Wildlife Conservation Society, and the United Nations Development Programme, came together with an ambitious plan to secure a Jaguar Corridor, stretching from Mexico to Argentina, and involving 30 priority conservation landscapes for the big cats by 2030.

The jaguar is an icon for Latin America and a clear reminder of our indigenous heritage, we need to strive to mobilize people to stand up and defend the home we share, Mara Jos Villanueva, WWF Mexico Conservation Director, said of the plan.

SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING: Look to the sky and behold its wonders – Wicked Local Plymouth

Look at up the sky. Look up at the night sky. And then lose yourself, for just a moment, in the wonder and the miracle that is the universe. Look for comet NEOWISE.

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them? -- Psalm 8:3

Look at up the sky. Look up at the night sky. And then lose yourself, for just a moment, in the wonder and the miracle that is the universe.

Look for comet NEOWISE.

No, its not the most romantic nor roll off the tongue kind of name for such an amazing celestial object. NEOWISE is named for the NASA spacecraft and mission that discovered the comet March 27: Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. This speeding heavenly object that is dropping by to visit planet Earth, is one of only a handful of comets that will be viewable by the naked eye this century.

I know I need something like NEOWISE to give me perspective on the times we are living in, a break from the intensity of the news cycle, and a chance to just pause and breathe and remember how wonderfully mysterious and mystical Creation and all that is within it, truly is. Ive read enough and then some about COVID and the roiling of Americas social fabric and the ugly general election right around the corner and the economy and so on and so on and so on.

All important, certainly and yet, even in the midst of these intense days, NEOWISE teaches us that we little humans living on this little blue ball hurtling through space in an unfathomably huge universe we are just one of so many worlds in the heavens. Scientists report that there are more than 10 septillion planets in our observable universe, and thats only counting planets that are orbiting stars.

The gift of something like NEOWISE reminds us of the relative short stay of humankind in the universe and of each of us on this earth. Our lives matter, absolutely, but we are also just one generation among a vast parade of life, human and otherwise. NEOWISE is actually a remnant from when the universe was created and came into being, which means it is upwards of 13.77 billion years old. It wont return to our solar system again for 6,800 years. And so, me complaining about turning 60 next year: I might want to rethink that!

NEOWISE also reminds us of just how awe-inspiring Creation can be: from comets moving at 40 miles per second or 144,000 miles per hour, to viruses that seem to come out of nowhere, to a species like homo sapiens, who have found some way to adapt and thrive in our environment. A people who for tens of thousands of years have faced into wars and pandemics and revolutions and somehow come through on the other side of that history, sometimes come through the worst, even better than before.

So, heres the way to see NEOWISE. Pick a night very soon when the sky is clear. Find a part of your community relatively dark and free of light pollution: a hill, a field, a dark corner to camp out in, any time after dark. Bring a telescope or a pair of binoculars. Look towards the northeast sky and search out the Big Dipper. Then look just below that constellation and NEOWISE should be visible.

Then look up at the sky. Look up at the night sky. And watch what may be the greatest show both on earth and off earth. Remind yourself that you are a part of the universe, that you are meant to be here, that you have been made by the same power that hurled NEOWISE racing across the cosmos. Let all the anxiety and worries of the day recede. Remember that folks were here before you and that folks will follow you too, and so our job while on terra firma is to do our best and maybe even leave this planet a little better than when we found it.

As Max Ehrman, the author of the poem Desiderata once wrote, Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

It is a beautiful world and universe. Thanks, NEOWISE, for reminding us of this eternal truth.

Ushering in a new era of work with RPA and AI – GCN.com

INDUSTRY INSIGHT

Government is ushering in a new era of work, using automation and artificial intelligence to help the federal workforce achieve higher levels of productivity and decision-making.

Over the past two years, agencies have focused on shifting the workforce to high-value work -- a key goal of the Presidents Management Agenda -- by taking advantage of robotic process automation and other technologies to reduce error, improve compliance and eliminate repetitive administrative tasks.

Although RPA is a useful IT capability that allows agencies to eliminate low-value, mundane, transactional work, it can only make simple decisions. By adding AI to the equation, agencies can accelerate the ability of RPA to complete a multitude of tasks at once. This can be particularly helpful when analyzing large swaths of data, enabling decision-makers to meet goals more efficiently and effectively.

The combination of these two technologies has delivered more real, tangible results that can be actively applied to digital solutions for civilian and defense agencies than either technology could do individually.

RPA, which provides software bots to automate high-volume, repeatable tasks within legacy processes and applications, has opened opportunities to massively transform government operations. Current RPA programs operating within agencies are achieving roughly five hours of workload elimination per employee, according to the RPA Program Playbook, published earlier this year by the Federal RPA Community of Practice.

The Playbook continues: If the government deployed RPA at scale and achieved only 20 hours of workload elimination per employee, the net capacity gained would be worth $3 billion -- and that is only scratching the surface.

RPA, a building block for AI

Many agencies across the federal government have initiated RPA programs to automate tasks of varying complexity across multiple functional areas including finance, acquisition, IT, human resources, security and mission assurance. Popular uses of RPA include data entry, data reconciliation, spreadsheet manipulation, systems integration, automated data reporting, analytics, customer outreach and communications.

In 2019, the Food and Drug Administrations Center for Drug Evaluation and Research reported it had seven RPA projects in development, including one that automated drug intake forms and freed up the pharmaceutical and medical staff for the agencys core science mission. Last year, the Defense Logistics Agency completed a first-of-its-kind proof of concept in government that allowed unattended bots to work around the clock. DLA recently reported it has saved more than 200,000 labor-hours with the 82 RPA bots it launched in the past year, CIO George Duchak said during an AFCEA DC virtual event in May. In fact, using basic bots is the first step in the agencys AI journey, he said.

RPA is transformative because it establishes the building blocks for AI in terms of IT infrastructure and task standardization, the Playbook notes. If RPA is effectively deployed, machine learning (ML) and intelligent automation are only a few, manageable steps away.

RPA/AI use case: Transaction matching, fraud prevention

Applying AI/ML along with RPA provides opportunities for financial management offices to address areas such as transaction matching, fraud prevention and anomaly detection.

For example, large financial management offices struggle to resolve and match hundreds of thousands of transactions, many of which require significant manual effort. An RPA solution can automatically access data from various financial management systems and process transactions without human intervention, but it will fall short when data variances exceed tolerances for matching data and documents and will result in unmatched transactions. The addition of an AI/ML capability would accelerate the handling and processing of data and associated actions, including matching financial transactions or identifying fraud.

If there is an error in the data on a particular transaction, for example, an automated system might not be able to match the transactions with confidence. However, a ML platform could train models to rapidly examine the correlation between historical and current transactions. It could help identify potential matching or irregular behavior based on transactions that might have erroneously mismatched fields such as different dates or name variants. This capability would accelerate the review process and preserve humans for the most important activities.

To be effective, a ML platform must adhere to open standards and offer an extensible set of tools that enable end-to-end data science and RPA development in a rapid, scalable and sustainable manner. This will allow agencies to innovate further as their data maturity and AI efforts improve.

As the power of AI grows with each new use case, so too do the misconceptions surrounding the technology, particularly the erroneous idea that AI will replace human workers, impacting their livelihood as the technology overtakes their job.

RPA has proved it can automate the manual, repetitive, low-value tasks that often drive worker dissatisfaction. The use of AI should enhance workforce efficiency by deferring boring, time-consuming tasks to computers, allowing humans to then make better, more informed decisions based on proven, trusted data that they did not have to take the time to analyze. By implementing the proper change management and communication strategy, agencies can help their employees see RPA and AI as a path to more meaningful, mission-aligned work.

3 Important Ways Artificial Intelligence Will Transform Your Business And Turbocharge Success – Forbes

From the smallest local business to the largest global players, I believe every organization must embrace the AI revolution, and identify how AI (artificial intelligence) will make the biggest difference to their business.

3 Important Ways Artificial Intelligence Will Transform Your Business And Turbocharge Success

But before you can develop a robust AI strategy in which you work out how best to use AI to drive business success you first need to understand whats possible with AI. To put it another way, how are other companies using AI to drive success?

Broadly speaking, organizations are using AI in three main ways:

Creating more intelligent products

Offering a more intelligent service

Improving internal business processes

Lets briefly look at each area in turn.

Creating more intelligent products

Thanks to the Internet of Things, a whole host of everyday products are getting smarter. What started with smartphones has now grown to include smart TVs, smartwatches, smart speakers, and smart home thermostats plus a range of more eyebrow-raising "smart" products such as smart nappies, smart yoga mats, smart office chairs, and smart toilets.

Generally, these smart products are designed to make customers lives easier and remove those annoying bugbears from everyday life. For example, you can now get digital insoles that slip into your running shoes and gather data (using pressure sensors) about your running style. An accompanying app will give you real-time analysis of your running performance and technique, thereby helping you avoid injuries and become a better runner.

Offering a more intelligent service

Instead of the traditional approach of selling a product or service as a one-off transaction, more and more businesses are transitioning to a servitization model, in which the product or service is delivered as an ongoing subscription. Netflix is a prime example of this model in action. For a less obvious example, how about the Dollar Shave Club, which will deliver razor blades and grooming products to your door on a regular basis. Or Stich Fix, a personalized styling service that delivers clothes to your door based on your personal style, size, and budget.

Intelligent services like this are reliant on data and AI. Businesses like Netflix have access to a wealth of valuable customer data data that helps the company provide a more thoughtful service, based on what it knows the customer really wants (whether its movies, clothes, grooming products or whatever).

Improving internal business processes

In theory, AI could be worked into pretty much any aspect of a business: manufacturing, HR, marketing, sales, supply chain and logistics, customer services, quality control, IT, finance and more.

From automated machinery and vehicles to customer service chatbots and algorithms that detect customer fraud, AI solutions and technologies are being incorporated into all sorts of business functions in order to maximize efficiency, save money and improve business performance.

So, which area should you focus on products, services, or business processes?

Every business is different, and how you decide to use AI may differ wildly from even your closest competitor. For AI to truly add value in your business, it must be aligned with your companys key strategic goals which means you need to be clear on what it is you're trying to achieve before you can identify how AI can help you get there.

That said, its well worth considering all three areas: products, services and business processes. Sure, one of the areas is likely to be more of a priority than the others, and that priority will depend on your companys strategic goals. But you shouldnt ignore the potential of the other AI uses.

For example, a product-based business might be tempted to skip over the potential for intelligent services, while a service-based company could easily think smart products arent relevant to its business model. Both might think AI-driven business processes are beyond their capabilities at this point in time.

But the most successful, most talked-about companies on the planet are those that deploy AI across all three areas. Take Apple as an example. Apple built its reputation on making and selling iconic products like the iPad. Yet, nowadays, Apple services (including Apple Music and Apple TV) generate more revenue than iPad sales. The company has transitioned from purely a product company to a service provider, with its iconic products supporting intelligent services. And you can be certain that Apple uses AI and data to enhance its internal processes.

In this way, AI can throw up surprising additions and improvements to your business model or even lead you to an entirely new business model that you never previously considered. It can lead you from products to services, or vice versa. And it can throw up exciting opportunities to enhance the way you operate.

Thats why I recommend looking at products, services, and business processes when working out your AI priorities. You may ultimately decide that optimizing your internal processes (for example, automating your manufacturing) is several years away, and thats fine. The important thing is to consider all the AI opportunities, so that you can properly prioritize what you want to achieve and develop an AI strategy that works for your business.

AI is going to impact businesses of all shapes and sizes, across all industries. Discover how to prepare your organization for an AI-driven world in my new book, The Intelligence Revolution: Transforming Your Business With AI.

3 Important Ways Artificial Intelligence Will Transform Your Business And Turbocharge Success - Forbes

Dont believe the hype: AI is no silver bullet – ComputerWeekly.com

You could be forgiven for thinking the entire world is now powered by artificial intelligence (AI) systems. McKinsey predicted a couple of years ago that the technology would add $13tn (10.8tn/9.7tn) to the global economy by 2030, and its currently easier to list the cyber security firms that arent shouting about their AI and machine learning capabilities than those that are.

Unfortunately, the reality of how its currently used doesnt map to the marketing hyperbole. We want to believe in the narrative because, like flying cars and jetpacks, the technology is so appealing to us. The cold, hard truth is very different.

Chief information security officers (CISOs) looking for new security partners must therefore be pragmatic when assessing whats out there. AI is helpful, in limited use cases, to take the strain off stretched security teams, but its algorithms still have great difficulty recognising unknown attacks. Its time for a reality check.

We live in a world where cyber attackers seem to hold all the cards or, if they dont, theyre certainly on an impressive winning streak.

The Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) revealed a 17% increase in data breaches in 2019 versus 2018, with more than 164 million records exposed across virtually every vertical you can imagine. The vast cyber crime economy that supports these endeavours is estimated to be worth $1.5tn annually, almost as much as the GDP of Russia.

Covid-19 has only made things more challenging for CISOs. An explosion in unmanaged home-working endpoints, distracted employees, stretched IT support staff, overloaded virtual private networks (VPNs), and unpatched remote access infrastructure has ramped up cyber risk levels. Skilled security professionals remain worryingly hard to find theres now a global shortage of more than four million.

All of this sets the scene for AI to ride in and save the day. But while intelligent algorithms have been developed to beat the worlds best Go players, power the voice assistants in our homes, and unlock our smartphones via facial recognition, a breakthrough remains as elusive as ever when it comes to cyber security.

Lets be clear. Machine and deep learning are good at some things. Give the system plenty of data and train it to spot subtle patterns and it can do so quite successfully. This could be useful in flagging known security threats and misconfigurations that human eyes may otherwise miss.

Its good in areas like anti-fraud tooling, for example, because scammers usually riff off the same underlying ideas when trying to defraud banks and businesses. By spotting these needles in the haystack, AI can help in-demand security professionals to do their jobs more efficiently and effectively.

Yet in this respect, AI is similar to a Google search engine, filtering through large volumes of data that humans couldnt possibly sort. What we havent achieved yet is the creation of independent learning machines that can draw new conclusions from patterns. The much-touted capability of baselining normal and then being able to spot abnormalities that could indicate suspicious patterns is actually much harder than it sounds.

Networks are incredibly complex and the bigger they are, the harder they are to map. Add to this the fact that commercial networks are constantly changing and developing new behaviours and interactions, and you have even more complexity. That means AI systems end up flagging even just the regular evolution of a healthy network as suspicious, resulting in an overwhelming number of false positives.

Cyber criminals also have a few tricks up their sleeve. By making their behaviour appear as normal as possible they could trick these intelligent systems. On the other hand, well-documented adversarial techniques can trick AI into making the wrong decisions by creating the digital equivalent of optical illusions.

So where do we go from here? Can we design improvements into AI systems to make them more effective in cyber security? The single biggest challenge in this field is transparency: the ability of a system to explain why it arrived at a particular decision.

Unfortunately, those AI systems that can explain how they came up with an answer are less effective than the more inscrutable black boxes. Users dont trust results from these opaque systems and find it challenging to follow up leads which simply say something unusual happened without explaining what made it worth flagging and why it matters to the business.

The lesson here for CISOs is buyer beware. Absolutely invest in AI systems for spotting well-established patterns that can make your security team more productive. But dont imagine the tech will be able to achieve sophisticated detection of new and unknown threats or replace human security analysts.

AI doesnt automate the work humans were already doing because there was never any way they could search through vast datasets in the first place. Your human experts will still need to take the lead, albeit with some help.

For what seems like the past 50 years, we have been a decade away from a breakthrough into artificial general intelligence (AGI). Despite the industry hype, this vision remains as elusive today as it ever was.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Dialogue Interactions Will Be Extremely Immersive – GameRant

The September 2020 issue of Official PlayStation magazine reveals that Cyberpunk 2077 will have interactive dialogue sequences.

Cyberpunk 2077has already shown off its high level of interactivity and, as expected, that will extend to dialogue. Cyberpunk's protagonist, V, will be able to look around during conversations so players can check their surroundings when they talk to NPCs. Paying close attention to what's happening around them may end up saving the player's life in the long run, so they'll want to become fairly observant when talking to others.

Cyberpunk 2077's Night City setting is a fairly dangerous place, and the player will mainly find themselves dealing with seedy individuals. According to the September 2020 issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine, Cyberpunk 2077's NPCs will display noticeable body language while talking to V. Some NPCs will do things like subtly reaching for something behind their back.

RELATED:Cyberpunk 2077 Beta Emails Are A Scam

The surrounding area will have things going on too. Players may see things like suspicious cars pulling up across the road. Should the player catch these signs in time, they can choose to react to them however they see fit. For instance, if the player feels like a CyberpunkNPCthey're talking to is getting ready to attack them, they can cut the conversation and waste the opposing party. If not that, they can run from the situation or use it to turn the negotiations to their advantage.

CD Project Red claims Cyberpunk 2077 has over two thick books of dialogue written for the title. One book holds what's spoken by NPCs while the other contains all the responses the players can make. In other words, talking to people will be just as much a part of the game as running and gunning is.

This makes this dialogue feature an excellent way to immerse the player into Cyberpunk's world. In most games, talking to NPCs tends to create as little breaks in the action, which gives the player time to relax. But Night City is, again, not a safe place, and people like V have to stay constantly vigilant if they want to survive. The player now has to share this same paranoia with V because they won't be able to coast through dialogue without running the risk of being unexpectedly killed.

The choices the player makes while talking to NPC's also affects how Cyberpunk 2077 ends. The game can be finished without actually beating it, which contrasts how most video games work, including CD Project Red's ownWitcherseries. It'll be interesting to see if a player can somehow mishandle a conversation and end up with an undesirable ending.

Cyberpunk 2077 launchesSeptember 17 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, and later for PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Sensei Ag Uses AI Platform and Hydroponic Technology to Grow Food – The Spoon

As the worlds population inches towards its estimated 10 billion people by 2050, finding more, not to mention more sustainable, ways to feed people becomes more and more important. High-tech, indoor agriculture is one solution getting a lot of attention lately, and recently, a new company joined the fast-growing sector. Sensei Ag is the brainchild of Oracles Larry Ellison and scientist Dr. David Agus, and the companys goal is to grow more greens using hydroponics and AI.

Based on the small Hawaiian island of Lnai, Sensei Ag has built a 100,000 sq. ft.hydroponic pilot greenhouse that is expected to grow 1 million pounds of food per year. I spoke with SenseiAg CEO Sonia Lo by phone this week, and she described the company as an integrated solution to indoor farming that uses the best practices in computer vision, germination, and seeding to optimize indoor growing.

I asked Lo about how the company incorporates AI into their greenhouses. She said that their AI platform will act as a data engine that harnesses global grower knowledge, and will create an algorithm for the best-practices in indoor growing. She did not go into the specifics of their platform, but did mention that this would be made available to other growers, and it would be embedded into each part of their agricultural system. Sensei Ag also uses advanced cameras within their greenhouses to identify pests, pathogens, plant health, and uneven growth in crops. The companys goal is to enable platforms within the greenhouse to make decisions on growing food autonomous of human intervention.

The COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and a growing population has forced us to consider the possibility of global food insecurity. In response, companies like Phytoponics, Element Farms, and Gotham Greens all operate indoor farms that use hydroponic techniques to grow leafy greens. Meanwhile, companies like Verdeat, Rise Gardens, and Seedo offer at-home vertical farming products that allow you to leafy greens in your living room.

Sensei Ag grows cherry tomatoes, basil, and butter lettuce, and Lo said that they will definitely be expanding the crops they grow. They are currently scouting for a location in California or Nevada for their flagship farm, which will be used as a template for rolling out future farms.

Crozet Annals of Medicine: Strong Medicine – The Crozet Gazette

A deep weariness has settled into my bones. I feel like I am living the plot to the movie Groundhog Day, where every day is a repeat of the day before and nothing changes. It has been six months since the first COVID-19 case was diagnosed in the US and still we do not have a national plan to defeat this thing. I suppose waiting for a vaccine could be considered a plan, but we are going to lose a lot of people in the meantime.

A thousand people a day are dying in America of this thing, day in and day out. Over 160,000 dead, and counting. By November an estimated 250,000 or more Americans will have died of COVID.

So, I am tired, tired of the anxiety infecting my workplace, the fear of invisible contagion.

I am tired of the sense of abandonment that reusing disposable PPE engenders.

I am tired of seeing other countries doing so much better at this than us. With 4% of the worlds population we have almost 25% of the worlds deaths from COVID.

I am tired of leaving work exhausted and grimy only to see people gathering with no masks and no distancing. I dont like it when people with masks around their chins stand too close to me in the grocery store. At work in the ER I can instruct them in the proper fitting of a mask, but this seems problematic in Harris Teeter. Still, I am tempted.

I am tired of stripping off my scrubs and shoes on the front porch after work, before I can enter my home. Actually, I am not that tired of it. It is kind of liberating, but Ill bet the neighbors are getting tired of it. It is hard to remain a health care hero to your neighbors while in your underwear.

I am tired of the endless debate about whether our kids can go back to school. They cannot. They cannot because we could not stay out of bars, parties, and non-essential indoor activities this summer. Some of us refused to wear masks. As a result, case rates are now too high in most areas to open schools and are still rising in 34 states.

We can fix all of this, but it will take strong medicine.

The New England Journal of Medicine published some evidence-based guidelines this week for what it would take to get our kids back to school. I thought they were clear-eyed and useful, so I will share them with you.

1) The safest way to open schools fully is to reduce or eliminate community transmission while ramping up testing and surveillance.

2) Any region experiencing moderate, high, or increasing levels of community transmission should do everything possible to lower transmission.

3) The path to low transmission in other countries has included adherence to stringent community control measures including closure of nonessential indoor work and recreational spaces.

4) Such measures, along with universal mask wearing, must be implemented now in the United States if we are to bring case numbers down to safe levels for elementary schools to reopen this fall nationwide.

5) If such measures were adopted now, transmission in many states could probably be reduced to safe levels for mid-September or early-October school reopenings.

6) Many school districts would be able to open even sooner although large improvements in testing volume and speed of reporting would be needed to enable appropriate levels of community surveillance.

7) Adults who work in school buildings (or drive school buses) should be provided with PPE

8) Schools social and physical infrastructure will also need to be modified. Students and teachers may need to eat lunch in their classrooms, and staff rooms may need to be closed to discourage adult congregation.

Even if schools can make creative short-term use of additional space, thousands of schoolsparticularly those serving low-income students of colorwill require significant federally funded upgrades to improve ventilation, sanitation, nurses offices, and hand-washing and bathroom facilities. These improvements have long been needed regardless of Covid-19; they are essential investments in educational equity and opportunity.

But the fundamental argument that children, families, educators, and society deserve to have safe and reliable primary schools should not be controversial. If we all agree on that principle, then it is inexcusable to open nonessential services for adults this summer if it forces students to remain at home even part-time this fall.

So, there you have it. A national plan! My fatigue is lifting already.

Universal mask wearing.

Two months of lockdown.

Rapid and widely available testing.

Physically reconfiguring our schools.

I told you it would take strong medicine. But the sooner we start, the sooner we will fix this. A vaccine is simply not going to save us. We have to save ourselves.

Brexit outrage: UK could have to pay BILLIONS more to EU after withdrawal – Express

The huge divorce bill has been accepted by the UK despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson's resistance and Brexiteer fury. Mr Johnson warned last August that in the event of a no deal, the hefty fee would "not strictly" be owed to Brussels. He said: If we come out without an agreement it is certainly true that the 39billion is no longer, strictly speaking, owed. However, given the UK has now accepted that it will pay per the financial settlement refusal to now could provoke the EU to take the case to the International Court of Justice. Much to the dismay of leavers in the UK, the divorce bill could still be being paid off by 2060, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility. The OBR estimated in January that the bill stood at just under 30billion most of this to be paid by 2022, with some relatively small payments still being made until the 2060s. However, clauses in the UK's withdrawal agreement with the EU threatens to pile on further costs.

The OBR figure of 33billion for the divorce bill is not an absolute number more of an estimate.

But on top of this, there are future liabilities in the small print of the withdrawal agreement which could lead to yet more disputes between Brussels and London.

The UK's future liabilities covers 50 pages of the agreement, and outlines that different parts of the EU have made long-dated loans or financial commitments during the UK's time in the bloc.

The agreement, which was passed by Parliament and settled on by both the UK and the EU, saddles Britain with a responsibility to pay for a portion of any future losses on those loans and financial commitments, regardless of whether any benefit was reaped from them.

One caveat is that this only applies to loans and commitments made when the UK was still a member state.

The withdrawal agreement states that the UK will pay a portion through the EU budget around 12 percent because that is the average contribution the UK made between 2014-2018.

The document states that including 2019 and 2020 in the calculation would make this figure smaller because the pound weakened against the euro following the EU referendum result and has remained at a lower level since".

It adds: This makes the UK economy appear relatively smaller and means the UK will make relatively smaller contributions to the EU budget.

However, this figure is changeable. For example, if a country in southern Europe finds itself in economic turmoil, the UK may have to up its contribution to compensate.

This total liability now amounts to 166billion through the EU Budget and 33billion in subscribed-but-not-called capital in the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Central Bank (ECB).

Additionally, in a crisis, the UK would hope to see its paid-in capital of 3.25billion in the EIB and ECB written off.

The amount at risk of 166billion through the EU Budget could rise by to 344billion during 2021 thanks to the headroom in and carry-over provision for the 2014-2020 EU budget period.

READ MORE:Westminster at war: Lords diversity row laid bare amid abolition calls

Should losses materialise, the UK's payments would be debited to the UK's budget, the Telegraph reported in July.

Whether the labyrinth of financial obligations would still be owed to the EU in the event on no deal is still debated amongst legal experts.

A House of Lords European Union Committee report published last October highlighted this.

It said: "Legal experts continue to disagree over the extent to which the UK would have outstanding financial obligations to the EU, or vice versa, in the event of a no deal Brexit.

"The difficulties in enforcing any possible financial obligations do not mean that there might not be a breach of international law if the UK were to withhold payments."

Brexit trade talks have seen the risk of no deal become ever more apparent as government sources said last month that the EU's approach has resulted in "paralysis".

Brexit negotiations have stalled in recent months over two key issues fisheries and regulatory alignment.

Mr Johnson wants to fulfil a Leave campaign promise that the UK will take back control of its waters post-Brexit.

Previously, EU vessels had free access to British fishing grounds, leaving many fishermen in the UK aggrieved.

However, the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier has warned Mr Johnson he cannot secure access to European markets without allowing EU vessels into UK waters.

The UK is also looking to avoid EU regulations giving the country more freedom to set its own laws on trading standards.

Penn Medicine-Led Research Suggests Greater Access to Specific HIV and Tuberculosis Medications is Needed Worldwide – Newswise

Newswise PHILADELPHIA After looking at the health records of over 10,000 patients with both HIV and multidrug resistant Tuberculosis (TB) in over 20 different countries, researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, McGill University, and other institutions around the world, found that implementing antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV and newer tuberculosis medications decreased the risk of death for adults with drug-resistant TB. While the treatments associated with lower mortality risk are common in the United States and are recommended by the WHO as the best treatment for these patients, global accessibility varies widely. The findings, which were published today in The Lancet, suggest that every effort should be made to quickly bring these life-saving medications to those in need.

In the largest individual patient data meta-analysis study to assess mortality risk of people with both HIV and multi-drug resistant TB, scientists first compared the risk of death for HIV-positive people versus HIV-negative people, then examined how receiving ART and different types of TB drugs altered this risk. Because of the large sample size, associations of specific TB drugs with mortality were evaluated, focusing on the most effective drugs, categorized as Group A by the World Health Organization (WHO). Data from 52 studies and 37 different countries was used, and the investigators controlled for things like age, the wealth of the region in which the individuals lived, and severity of drug resistance. Researchers ultimately found that while patients with HIV infection were at higher risk of death, this risk was reduced substantially when Group A TB drugs and ART were used. As there are various types of Group A TB medications, the odds survival varied based on which Group A medication or combination was employed. When looking at only those with HIV, the risk of death was reduced by over 80% with use of specific TB drugs.

Previous smaller studies had suggested these associations, but the large scale of this study solidifies the importance of using ART and the WHO Group A TB medications such as later-generation fluoroquinolones, bedaquiline, and linezolid to treat those who both have drug-resistant TB and are also HIV positive, said lead author Gregory Bisson, MD, MSCE, an Infectious Diseases specialist and an associate professor of Medicine at Penn. In addition, using mortality as a measure of whether this treatment was effective offered clear answers as to just how valuable these medications are.

Having both tuberculosis and HIV is not uncommon. Multi-drug resistant TB affects roughly half a million people around the world every year according to the WHO. And of all those with TB, about 9 percent are also HIV positive. It is not surprising since HIV makes people more susceptible to all kinds of infections, like TB, as well as viral and fungal infections, Bisson said. But the reason patients in need dont often receive effective treatments for one or both of the conditions is mostly due to accessibility.

The availability of ART and the most effective TB medications often depends on where patients live, Bisson said. Previous studies have found that in some regions only a third of patients with drug-resistant TB access effective treatment. Given the associations with mortality we found in this study, there should be urgency in the medical community to find ways to make these medications more affordable and available.

While ART has been found to decrease risk of death when given during treatment of drug-sensitive TB, there has been less evidence indicating this is the case in the more complex case of highly-drug resistant TB disease, Bisson said. Hesitance to use ART when patients are on several drugs for drug-resistant TB may also come from the potential toxicity of ART medications. Negative effects from ART can range from neuropathy to a rash and central nervous system toxicity. While Bisson agrees that ART medications may have adverse effects, their benefits far outweigh their risks including in drug-resistant TB.

Bissons research lays a foundation to further investigate the success of specific ARTs in conjunction with TB medications. It also allows the medical community to study methods that might bring these treatments to those who have trouble affording them or accessing them where they live.

Penns Jonathan Walsh also authored this study.

Brexit fuels brain drain as skilled Britons head to the EU – The Guardian

Brexit has sparked an exodus of economically productive people from the UK to European Union nations on a scale that would normally be expected only as a result of a major economic or political crisis, according to a detailed new study.

Using a combination of official statistics across the EU and in-depth interviews with people living in Germany, the study found huge changes in migration patterns of UK citizens since the 2016 referendum, which contrast with largely stable ones among nationals from the 27 EU states remaining in the bloc.

The report, a collaboration between the Oxford in BerlinResearch Partnership a project made up of Oxford university and four Berlin institutions and the WZB Berlin Social Science Center, also found a seismic shift in the number of UK citizens already living abroad who had decided to go a step further by obtaining EU member state passports since 2016, showing how Britains vote to leave the EU pushed many individuals into long-term decisions.

The study says that migration from the UK to EU countries has increased by about 30% compared to pre-Brexit numbers. Britons living in other EU countries who decided to obtain EU member state passports as well as their UK ones had increased by more than 500% overall, and by 2,000% in Germany.

Dr Daniel Auer, a co-author of the report, said: These increases in numbers are of a magnitude that you would expect when a country is hit by a major economic or political crisis.

Moreover, the study found that UK migrants are among the most educated and skilled of those from any nation, with one of the highest net average income rates, suggesting that Brexit has begun a steady drain of the most talented and productive people to the continent.

In Germany, UK migrants were among the highest earners, bringing in on average 2,812 a month in 2019, just behind those from Austria and the US.

There are now about 1.2 million British citizens living in the EU, between 120,000 and 150,000 of which are in Germany. In the four years since the Brexit referendum, 31,600 Brits have been granted dual British/German citizenship: 2019 saw 14,600 naturalisations compared to 622 in 2015.

About half of all British citizens living in Germany will have dual UK/German nationality by the end of 2020, the report says.

Interviews with UK citizens living and working in Germany showed Brexit had made people prepared to take on levels of risk that they previously would not have considered.

A British academic in his 40s, who is married with a young family and who migrated in July 2016 told researchers: The referendum happened and we immediately changed our minds about buying a house in Bristol. Our whole emigration decision hung on the referendum result.

The majority of interviewees who left agreed to either a pay cut or a pay freeze as part of their decision. Some struggled to find a job. I have still not found work, which is not what I expected [] The cost of the move in personal and financial terms is always difficult to foresee, and Im starting to wonder if I underestimated the risk involved, said a British IT worker who migrated in October 2019 with his wife and three children.

Co-author Daniel Tetlow added: Were observing a new social migration phenomenon and a redefining of what it means to be British-European. In 2019, Brits came in just behind Turks in numbers receiving German citizenship way ahead of Poles, Romanians, Iraqis or Syrians, whom you might otherwise expect to be more eagerly applying for German/EU citizenship.

Letter: Facts, please, on how Brexit will help our country – expressandstar.com

Ill listen Kev but it must be a tax free six figure sum. Frank Walker tells readers not to get upset and stressed about me. Neither letter makes any attempt to explain how Brexit will benefit us facts please, countries who will buy something from us that they arent buying at the moment.

Countries that will give us orders as profitable as those we receive from the EU. Both letters mock my intelligence but neither letter writer explains what great achievements they have obtained that entitle them to believe that they know better than me.

I didnt stay on in sixth form so dont have educational qualifications beyond GCE O levels.

However, if I am going to seek an opinion on important subjects like Brexit I prefer to get it from those who have worked and studied for years to enhance their careers. Let me give Kev and Frank a couple of statistics. 90 per cent of academics voted to remain in the EU. In 2017 researchers at Leicester University found that levels of intelligence were more significant than age, gender, income or local immigrant levels when it came to voting to remain or leave.

Personally I prefer to listen to those who have sat down and done their sums rather than those who think Nigel Farage would be a great bloke to have a drink with. Not that I want to make a meal of it but I did write earlier in the year saying that his Brexit Party would go the same way as UKIP.

Cubs now aiming to play – Medicine Hat News

By RYAN MCCRACKEN on August 8, 2020.

rmccracken@medicinehatnews.com

The Medicine Hat Cubs shifted focus to the future at Thursday nights annual general meeting electing an almost entirely new board and signaling a desire to remain in the Heritage Junior Hockey League for the 2020-21 season.

Back in June, the Cubs announced they would not be icing a team for the upcoming campaign due to diminishing sponsorship revenues brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, but newly elected board member and head scout Troy Sandau says he feels that decision was made prematurely.

That was on the old board, now with a bunch of new faces we hope to reverse that and hopefully have a team going this year, said Sandau. With COVID going on, we are kind of handcuffed by a few things but we want to have a season and the kids want to be on the ice. Were going to work hard and follow the guidelines for the health and safety first and foremost of the players. We just want to field a team this year. Financially, I think well be alright.

Cubs general manager Dave Kowalchuk confirmed Thursday evening that the team can re-enter the HJHL for the 2020-21 season. The Cubs even announced a new signing Friday morning in the form of 17-year-old defenceman Levi Brewer.

We have a meeting again with the league on (Aug. 10) and they want to know if were a go or not, said Kowalchuk. We did have a meeting with the league last week regarding what the schedule will look like. Right now, technically were looking at an Oct. 28 start, 30-game season.

It was a somewhat contentious AGM at First Assembly of God Church in Medicine Hat, as disputes about the clubs financial statement and the general direction of the team caused a stir among the roughly 50 people in attendance.

The teams three-page financial statement presented a June 1 2019 opening balance of $7,092.26, followed by $3,092.93 net income over the ensuing season and a new balance of only $3,092.93 on June 1 2020.

After a lengthy discussion on the topic, members approved a motion to conduct an immediate external audit.

There needs to be some paperwork. There needs to be some financial accountability, said newly elected board member Dale Roth. When the folks in the crowd at an AGM are saying, Well wait a minute the numbers dont make sense, and they legitimately dont make sense, thats one of the key things that we have to get on as a society.

Roth added hes been involved in hockey at various levels for decades and believes he can help steer the team in a positive direction.

A buddy of mine said, You know what? The Cubs could use some help. They could use a guy like you that knows how to market the game, that knows how to be part of social media, that knows the media in Medicine Hat and can help sell the game and get sponsorship and get the community back involved, he said. If dollars are an issue, well, well reach out to the community and give them a product on the ice that Medicine Hat can once again be proud of and put their money behind.

A bylaw change was also passed at the AGM to reduce the maximum size of the board from 12 to eight. Eleven were nominated Thursday, prompting a vote that ultimately elected Roth, Sandau, Lorrie Stadnicki, Deb Wickham, Justin Crawford, Glenn Stahl, Jerry Straub and Donna Schlosser.

Of the eight members elected to the board, only Crawford returns from the previous season. Outgoing president Richard Fritzler said he was glad he wasnt nominated to return to his role, as he would have declined.

I enjoyed the two-and-a-half years I put in, I enjoyed the players and riding the bus with them, said Fritzler. Id like to thank the old members on my board for all their hard work. We did have some exciting things going on but I guess that wont happen now. I wish the Cubs all the best of luck in the future, and the new board.

The new board will establish roles of president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer at its first meeting, which will take place Sunday on Zoom.

Hockey operations still has a good deal of ground to cover as well. The team parted ways with co-coaches JD Gaetan and Steve Leipert in the off-season and have yet to fill the vacant positions. Kowalchuk says he has a few leads on potential bench bosses, as well as new players evidenced by Fridays signing of Brewer.

Over the past few months here Ive reached out to some ex-coaches from the SJHL, AJHL, he said. I know there are some local guys that are interested as well, they havent really reached out to me but Ive had some emails coming through, some resumes.

The High River Flyers are the only other HJHL team to opt out of the upcoming season, which could present an opportunity for the Cubs as they look to rebuild a roster. However, Kowalchuk says players who had previously committed to return to the Cubs from last season still intend to play in Medicine Hat if there is a team, as long as they dont reach a higher level in the meantime.

Were pretty good between the pipes, defensively we should be pretty good as well, said Kowalchuk. We just got word that Cooper Hilworth (forward) will be going to Nanaimo Clippers camp in B.C., but if he doesnt make it hell definitely be back here in September to start skating.

The Cubs also paid tribute to three alumni who recently passed away, BJ Niwa, Mike Engel and Ryan Pancoast, with a moment of silence to begin Thursdays AGM.

Brexit and beyond! UKs exciting new role in Indo-Pacific region explained – Express

Britain and the EU have agreed to continue discussing a free trade deal until October 2. The UK's chief Brexit negotiator David Frost announced: Negotiating rounds will take place in August and in September, unless agreed otherwise between the parties." Despite the new timetable, neither side is expecting a breakthrough.

A fifth round of talks broke out in London at the end of last month, with Mr Frost's counterpart Michel Barnier saying a trade deal with the UK by the end of the year appears unlikely.

Downing Street is said to be working on the assumption Britain will have no trade deal in place when the transition period ends on December 31.

As tensions are set to rise in the incoming weeks, a paper by the Foundation for Independence sheds light on what role the UK could play in the Indo-Pacific region instead.

The pro-Brexit think tank argues that as the UK reclaims its sovereignty from Brussels, it must ensure that it does not allow itself to become overly dependent on any other nations, including, and perhaps especially, China.

On the other hand, the study suggests, Britain should be working extremely hard to strengthen its ties with India, a Commonwealth country, as well as other growing economies such as Vietnam, Taiwan, and South Korea.

The latter three countries should be at the forefront of trade talks with the UK, the paper adds.

Moreover, the report said the Pacific region and Pacific Trade Partnership also has developed democracies in the shape of Japan, Malaysia, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the latter being Commonwealth countries, with whom Britain can re-establish trade links and develop still deeper political and cultural ties.

The paper read: "The adoption of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) strategy should be the metaphorical constitution of UK activity in the region.

JUST IN:Belgium and Spain tipped to destroy Scotland's EU dream

"It should be the set of guiding principles that prescribe the necessary action for any given situation. It would help to ensure a consistency of British action which has hitherto been lacking.

"This would provide greater confidence in the UK from its allies, and a greater understanding by adversaries of what motivates specific UK responses.

"It would also align the UK with the regions other democratic states. India, Japan, the United States, Australia, South Korea, and even Taiwan all have strategies that could be recognised as akin to the FOIP proposal."

The key themes across these nations FOIP strategies, the report noted, are: support for multilateral bodies such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), an unwavering respect for the sovereignty of all states, the importance of free trade for global prosperity, the peaceful resolution of disputes through intentional forums, and the importance of open investment in Southeast Asia.

Given the current supremacy of Chinas Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) particular credence should apparently be given to this last point.

The study explained: "For too long the BRI has been the only infrastructure game in town for Southeast Asian states. The primary intention of this policy is to multiply Chinese hegemony and influence through the creation of 'debt colonies.

"A multilateral FOIP strategy must offer governments a viable alternative to over-reliance on this geopolitical weapon."

Moreover, according to the report, the UK's FOIP strategy should go beyond simply signing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with surging economies.

It will have to lay the foundations for a more comprehensive engagement with the region; diplomatically, culturally, and economically.

The authors wrote: "This would be a form of 'critical geopolitics, which stipulates that the UKs position in the world is not pre-determined by geography as much as it is by internal aspirations, and the successful enactment of these aspirations.

"It moves beyond the outdated territorial paradigm of geopolitics, and reconceives of it as the nexus between a states interests and its strategic ability to self-reliantly defend them."

This could for example be achieved through high profile visits (both military and political) with India, South Korea, and Japan in a more "synergised manner".

The study concluded: "Dialling up the intensity with which London approaches the governments of India, Japan and South Korea will enable the UK to craft a major role for itself in future global debates.

"Whilst the region may currently be seen as slightly esoteric and irrelevant, it is the theatre within which the values most important to British prosperity will face the greatest threat.

"Upgrading Britains awareness of the region is more than just a fanciful overindulgence.

"It is a foreign policy necessity."

Letters: Russian meddling is at the heart of Brexit – The Guardian

Luke Harding and Mark Townsend report that from Moscow, Brexit is seen as a wild success, diminishing the UK and estranging London from its European partners And MI6 failed to ask its secret agents what exactly the Kremlin was up to (Timid, incompetent how our spies missed Russias bid to sway Brexit, News). You do not require a degree in geopolitics to understand why a weakened Russia, believing itself threatened by Nato and the west generally, needs, and works for, a weakened west.

Carole Cadwalladr (The Russia report shows we have a national security problem. He lives in No 10, Comment) observes: The Russians stand accused of exploiting with disinformation and lies the same platform that Johnsons chief aide, Dominic Cummings, exploited with disinformation and lies. Is anyone asking what Cummings was up to in his three years in Russia? Given that your opinion poll (News) indicates that almost half of the people interviewed believe the Russian government interfered with the referendum, is it out of the question to challenge, even at this late date, the validity of the 2016 result? This is not to challenge democracy. It could be to challenge possible treason.John AirsLiverpool

MI5s failure to investigate Russian interference in the EU referendum was either because the government ordered it or MI5 itself chose not to do so for fear of becoming involved in politics. Also, its report was completed in March 2019 but did not reach Boris Johnson until the following October, plenty of time for government to tamper with the report. This as published contains nothing to justify withholding it before the general election. The entire episode reeks to high heaven, just like our politics in general.James RobertsonPembury, Tunbridge WellsKent

Shane Hickey discusses the issues facing employees and employers as home working seems likely to continue (As home working becomes the new normal, know your rights, Cash). A major advantage for the individual is avoidance of the time and cost of commuting.

But, while some relish the daytime involvement of other members of the household, this can also be distracting. Conversely, solitary workers may feel isolated and lonely. The lack of structured hours, while sometimes providing valuable flexibility (for example for the school run), may erode what otherwise would be free time.

There is another possibility. Local office hubs might develop, perhaps replacing vacant shops. Individuals from various firms could rent a workplace with suitable desk and chair and internet access. The journey to work might be only a 10-minute walk, there would be chats around the water cooler and scope for meeting over lunch. The whole package would replace the missing social features of the office and might best suit some workers.David WatkinLeicester

In her excellent article, Jemma Kennedy writes movingly about her symptoms following coronavirus and makes connections with the experience of our first cousins whose lives have been devastated by the much misunderstood illness ME/CFS (Im a Covid-19 long hauler. For us, there is no end in sight, Comment). Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome profoundly affects the health and lives of sufferers for many months, years or decades.

Kennedy identifies the profound challenges of people living with ME/CFS, for example, in gaining a diagnosis, the lack of an evidence-based treatment and, most significantly, the disbelief even within families and sometimes the medical profession. This latter can lead to isolation and despair.

Covid-19 has been an unrelenting nightmare for too many people but if we emerge from the experience with a greater openness, compassion and understanding for people living with related hidden illnesses such as ME/CFS, that would be a silver lining, a glimmer of hope for the 250,000 people who live with the condition in the UK.David Oddie, Hilary DoeStoke Climsland, CallingtonCornwall

Andrew Rawnsleys interim report on Keir Starmers leadership shows an encouraging start (The Tories are struggling to find a way to make Keir Starmer look bad, Comment). Many people I spoke to last December saw the general election as a Mortons fork: Boris Johnson was simply less undesirable than Jeremy Corbyn, both in personality and manifesto.

What seems surprising is that so many of the electorate still fail to recognise Johnson as a self-centred and shallow bully. Starmer may be accused of being dull and wooden but that seems misplaced were looking to a potential prime minister. The irony is that Johnson could become a leading Labour sponsor in the popularity stakes as the flip-flops that Rawnsley refers to are increasingly perceived as flop-flops.John TrounceHove, East Sussex

The problem that needs to be solved by car manufacturers is not so much the 1,800 deaths that occur on our roads each year, but the 64,000 premature deaths that occur annually from air pollution (Driving may never be the same again. But what a ride its been!, Focus).

This has been given renewed urgency by the realisation that Covid-19 mortality is closely linked to levels of air pollution. Thus city dwellers are between 40% and 80% more likely to die from Covid-19 than their rural counterparts, an observation that would go a long way to explain the higher mortality among members of the BAME community.Robin Russell-Jones, scientific adviser, all-party parliamentary group on air pollutionMarlow, Buckinghamshire

The Brexit government is lost in a fog of lies – The Guardian

Michael Gove is standing in a public waste disposal site in west London, objective reality dissolving around him, surrounded by a semicircle of imaginary attendants he has made himself from discarded rubbish; mop-handle spines, coathanger arms, sofa cushion bodies, and rotting rubber football heads. These are my attendants, Leapy Lee, he cried up at me, his eyes Bolivian bright, they are immensely dignified and they are real. But there were scarcely 10 false attendants, and they had taken Gove a week to make. I could have made that many in a day. I suddenly had my first inkling of the gulf between reality and the Brexit governments acceptance of it. Why was I here?

Some years prior to the peak of Michael Goves Colombian period, and before he was an MP, I was assigned to be the young satirical journalists additional material-writer on the boldly experimental 1992 Channel 4 comedy show, A Stab in the Arras. In each of the 36 episodes, the restaurant critic Tracey MacLeod flamboyantly operated a giant fairground waltzer, intermittently carrying the shows other stars, Michael Gove, and David Baddiel (in a succession of culturally insensitive hats), past the lens of a fixed-position camera. Its microphone caught muffled snatches of context-free satirical opinion that faded into incoherence as the ride revolved, largely drowned out by the sound of the Wurlitzer organ.

Audiences were baffled and many viewers subsequently became hermaphrodites, though the show has a bizarre half-life in a remote Patagonian commune. There, a devoted cult still believe that the 25-year-old Gove, a nagapie-faced avatar of cosmic justice whom they call the Night Monkey, was mouthing hidden revelations of the End Times.

A disorienting incident that left me scooping a babbling future chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster up off a patch of Wormwood Scrubs waste ground, and then burning the soiled lemming costume I found him wearing, led to my diplomatic dismissal. But I know Gove, a fellow orphan, has taken a fatherly, if unwelcome, interest in me since, and I often fancy I see him lurking out of view, furtively watching me, at motorway service stations, mountaintop cairns, agricultural shows, or kiosks.

Though we have never met, I was therefore not surprised when Goves partner, the Daily Mail thought-sluice Sarah Vine, contacted me through a third party to solicit aid. Gove, who had just been filmed recommending that the public scavenge rubbish dumps for their needs, and saying that a dozen massive Brexit lorry parks which were actually being built werent actually being built, was missing. Maybe someone from the days before the coca vine entangled Gove, who was now rumoured to dwell in one of the very rubbish tips he had recommended that the electorate scour, could help? Was this the spiritual toll of denying objective truths on a daily basis?

It is, for example, expecting a lot of the Brexit government to act on the evidence of the Russia report. The current Conservative machine re-edited news footage to discredit Keir Starmer, faked Brexit Facebook posts to respond to dubiously harvested data, and, during the last election, temporarily renamed its own website Factcheckuk, when 88% of its own online electoral communications were proven to be factually inaccurate. Lies are the lubricant of the Brexit governments daily assaults on the orifices of the body politic. How can the prime minister, in good conscience, take action against the same methods that have secured his own white-fisted grip on the bruised and wilting organ of battered Brexit Britain?

The Covid Government continues to ignore its own documented misdemeanours, like a smoking assassin calmly walking away from an exploding building in a video game, having calmly paused to light a match on the stubble of a slaughtered opponent. As long ago as May 2016, when the fact-checking charity Full Fact pointed out that Michael Gove had lied about the EU wanting to ban kettles, he insisted his lies were not lies and doesnt even seem to believe the basic idea of truth has any value.

I found Gove at the rubbish dump easily enough, following the sound of his voice through canyons of discarded white goods. We hold all the cards and we can choose the path we want! he shouted, lost in a maze of broken toilets. But he held only dirty bus tickets, and he wore just a Happy Shopper bag, with holes cut for his two legs. Ah Leapy Lee! he cried. Do you like my facemask? It is deluxe. Gove had an old Bazooka Joe bubblegum wrapper stuck to his cheek with saliva, flapping uselessly in the breeze. I wont wear them anyway. I agree with Donald Trump. I went in his lift, you know? An immensely dignified African American attendant was kitted out in frock-coat and white cotton gloves. It was as though the Great Glass Elevator from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory had been restyled by Donatella Versace, then staffed by the casting director for Gone With the Wind.

I found it hard to concentrate. One of Goves testicles was poking out of the Happy Shopper bag, the sick egg of a Chernobyl pigeon. Ah Leapy! he exclaimed. I see you admire my briefs. They are Calvin Kleins. Its like Boris was made to say. I have more Calvin Kleins than Keir Starmer. No. That isnt right. Its the other way round, Leapy. Calvin Starmer has more briefs than Keir Cline. That is the sort of thing we must say. Ha! Id make you a cup of tea, Leapy, but kettles have been banned by the EU. I decide what is true, Leapy. And I am absolutely right to do this! Have you met my attendants?

Living in a world of perpetual lies cant be good for the Conservatives souls. Unless they already sold them to devils years ago, in the form of rich Russian oligarchs spouses, taking tea on the lawn. Again. Anyone for tennis? New balls please!
