WESLEY CHAPEL | Kathleen's boys soccer team saw one of its best seasons ever end Tuesday night.

Facing Wesley Chapel Wiregrass Ranch, MaxPreps.com's No. 9-ranked team in the state, the Red Devils fell behind in the first half and couldn't make it up, losing 3-0 to the Bulls before a crowd of about 400 at Wiregrass Ranch Stadium. The Bulls will take on defending state champion Melbourne in the regional final on Friday.

The loss ended Kathleen's season at 22-9. But coach Michael Locke likes the direction the team is heading.

"The fact that we finally got a district championship after finishing runner-up three times is huge," Locke said. "We started the season well and ended the season well. I couldn't ask for a better team. We played hard."

The effort of the Red Devils is one thing Locke didn't have to question this season and he didn't have to question it Tuesday.

The Red Devils played with the Bulls evenly through the game's first 13 minutes. Then Wiregrass Ranch's (26-1-1) Brendan Duran scored the first goal.

The Bulls then got two goals three minutes apart by Andy Hippely to take a 3-0 lead at the half.

Kathleen had chances to pull closer before halftime but a diving header by Brayan Perez skirted past the open net; an Andrew Yarnell blast slipped wide and a Geness Kennedy blast went just high over the crossbar.

The second half Wiregrass Ranch was happy to drop back and not let any Kathleen slip anything by. For the Red Devils, no heads were down following the contest.
