You won't see their faces on the covers of magazines, splashed across billboards or at the top of the credit roll. Good luck finding them strutting downthe catwalk or gracing the silver screen.
Tacitus spotted them first in Scotland, the middle-ages cast them as vampires, the brothers Grimm threw them in with sorcery, and Gulliver found them "libidinous and mischievous," on his travels in 1726.
Fiery women and weak men, the historical fiction reiterates. After at least a thousand years of discrimination, Thomas Knights has had enough.

"I want to reclaim the red and re-brand the stereotype," said the world-renowned photographer, who has grown tired of hearing reports of red-heads being ostracised and bullied.

"We have been conditioned to think that ginger men are ugly and weak," he said.
"How did this happen? When did ginger men say that they are not aspirational, now it's so ingrained into our psyche that it's almost unimaginable to think of a red-haired super hero."
"I wanted to flip this on its head and present the redhead male as the ultimate alpha-male."

The Revolution won Major League Soccers Eastern Conference Championship on Saturday after a 2-2 draw with the Red Bulls at Gillette Stadium gave them a 4-3 win on aggregate score.
The results of both games not only reflect how competitive the teams were over 180 minutes but also aptly describe the margin of the Revs superiority. It was that slight.
The Red Bulls end their season knowing they could have been as jubilant as the Revolution now are. They lost a hotly contested home leg last week on Jermaine Jones late goal and drew a game Saturday that they could have won handily. Instead, New England heads to the MLS Cup for the first time since 2007 and the fifth time in its 19-year history.
Charlie Davies, 28, twice pulled the Revolution from the brink of despair. The Revolution striker canceled out goals from New Yorks Tim Cahill and Peguy Luyindula with two of his own.Maybe its fitting that Davies impact was decisive in a series that was decided by a matter of inches. After all, Davies nearly lost his life and career in a 2009 car accident. The Manchester, N.H., natives biggest goals in five years powered his hometown team to within arms length of the most prestigious trophy U.S. soccer has to offer. It all could have been different had Davies positioned himself a few inches away on Saturday or in 2009.
The Red Bulls threatened the Revolution and controlled the game from the opening stages. Cahill scored a scrappy first goal in the 26th minute. New York could have added a second or third before the interval, as legendary forward Thierry Henry was at his scheming best.
But despite dominating for 45 minutes, the Red Bulls were deadlocked with the Revolution at halftime. Davies had headed the Revolution back to parity 15 minutes after Cahill put his teams collective nose in front.
The Red Bulls continued their charge in the second half, and Luyindula restored their lead eight minutes into the period. The visitors were firmly in control of the game after 65 minutes, but they lost the initiative and ultimately the series.
Cahill should have doubled the Red Bulls lead in the 67th minute, but the Australian forward unbelievably shot over the crossbar, instead of the open goal, from close range. Inches.
Three minutes later, Davies headed the ball past goalkeeper Luis Robles into New Yorks goal. Chris Tierney, a native of Wellesley, Mass., assisted both of Davies goal with pinpoint crosses from the left flank. The Revolution were level in the game and ahead in the series.

NASA is set to launch the first test flight of its deep-space Orion capsule this week, and you can watch activities leading up to the Thursday (Dec. 4) launch live online.
The Orion capsule built for NASA by Lockheed Martin is designed to eventually take humans deeper into space than they've ever gone before. Thursday's unmanned test will help engineers learn more about how Orion's key systems operate in the harsh space environment. Starting Tuesday (Dec. 2), NASA will air various media and public events in the run-up to Orion's launch. You can watch the NASA TV Orion events live on Space.com.
"During its 4.5-hour trip, Orion will orbit Earth twice and travel to an altitude of 3,600 miles into space," NASA officials said in a statement. "The flight is designed to test many of the elements that pose the greatest risk to astronauts and will provide critical data needed to improve Orions design and reduce risks to future mission crews."
Orion is expected to launch to space atop a United Launch Alliance Delta 4 Heavy rocket from Florida at 7:05 a.m. EST (1205 GMT) for the test flight (also called Exploration Flight Test-1). But on Tuesday, NASA officials will host a press conference about what this Orion flight and future tests could mean for Mars exploration.
NASA officials will also host two pre-launch news conferences one on Tuesday, the other on Wednesday (Dec. 3) to discuss the test flight. Officials will also brief the media after the test ends later in the day on Thursday.
For this test flight, Orion will make two orbits of Earth, with the second lap taking the capsule 15 times farther from the planet than the International Space Station. Officials have attached more than 1,000 sensors to the spacecraft to monitor its systems during flight.
Orion will also beam down images from its cameras as it is flying through space. NASA will use the information gathered during the test flight to make improvements to the spacecraft before humans set foot onboard.

NASA Launching Orion Capsule Test Flight Thursday: Watch Live
In July 1969, America watched with rapt attention as Neil Armstrong placed the first human footprints on the moon. This perfect "one small step" set an entire generation of dreamers, explorers and risk-takers on a trajectory to the stars.
Since that time, the American space program has been burdened by budget cuts and since retiring the space shuttle in 2011 dependence on foreign entities such as Russia to get our astronauts to space.
But that's rapidly changing, and the Colorado-centric NASA Orion mission set to launch Thursday and venture further into space than any NASA spacecraft built for humans in more than 40 years is leading the charge.
(Denver Post)
"The Orion program ... is a great example of Colorado's center stage in the space industry," said Jay Lindell, aerospace industry champion with the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. "We are a leader in the nation in aerospace employment, technology development, and our Colorado industry supported by superb universities leads the way with the Orion program."
Space-related jobs
Colorado has the top number of aerospace workers, per capita, of any state in the nation, according to the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation. Projects such as Orion contribute greatly to Colorado's economy, which boasts about 170,000 aerospace-related jobs and more than 400 aerospace-related companies, according to EDC data.
Orion's prime contractor is Littleton-based Lockheed Martin Space Systems. The spacecraft and heat shield were designed and built at Space Systems' Waterton Canyon campus.
About 1,000 employees throughout several of Space Systems' locations have fingerprints on some aspect of the Orion project, with just under 800 of them in Littleton, company spokeswoman Allison Rakes said.
But the Colorado connection doesn't end there. Orion, which is set to launch on Exploration Flight Test-1, or EFT-1, on Thursday morning from Cape Canaveral, Fla., will take a 17-minute ride into orbit on the world's most powerful rocket the Centennial-based United Launch Alliance-made Delta IV Heavy.

Dr. Roderick Macdonald Jr., who served as the University of South Carolina Medical School's first permanent dean nearly four decades ago, died Monday. He was 88.
Macdonald was born on Oct. 16, 1926, in Charleston. He went to Davidson College to earn his undergraduate degree and then attended MUSC, graduating in 1950. He held positions at several medical universities around the country before returning to South Carolina in 1976 to head the then new medical school.
He acted as both dean and professor of surgery while at the university. According to previous Post and Courier reports, Macdonald said of his positions, "I hope that some day I will be able to be remembered as a medical educator who contributed to the growth of a medical school." Under Macdonald, the school received full accreditation with the first class graduating in 1981. He was named Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Dean Emeritus of the School of Medicine.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen, four daughters, a son and nine grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by Dunbar Funeral Home of Columbia.

ROGERSVILLE Cherokee High School sophomore Ian Frazier recently attended Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington, D.C., intended for honors students who are planning careers in medical professions.
Frazier is enrolled in the Health Science curriculum and plans to pursue medicine in the field of neurology.
His goals stem from several childhood and sports-related injuries; specifically concussions, a vertebral fracture, and ultimately a traumatic brain injury.
Frazier is also a member of Cherokee's HOSA: Future Health Professionals organization.
The Congress of Future Medical Leaders is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields.
The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal.
Frazier was nominated to represent Cherokee on his academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.
During the three-day Congress, Frazier joined students from across the country and heard lectures from Nobel laureates, National Medal of Science winners, and fellow teen medical science prodigies.
