Liberty wins playoff debut at James Madison

Harrisonburg, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Liberty aspires to move up to the FBS level, but the Flames have taken a quick liking to the FCS playoffs.

In the first postseason game in program history, the Flames went across state to stun James Madison, 26-21, in the first round.

Big South co-champion Liberty (9-4) will visit another CAA Football team, sixth-seeded Villanova (10-2), in the second round next Saturday.

Coach Turner Gill's program, which has sought a move to the FBS, won a strange playoff debut by jumping to a 10-0 lead in the second quarter, falling behind 21-10 by halftime and then scoring 16 unanswered points in the second half.

The winning points capped a 17-play, 85-yard, 11-minute drive in the fourth quarter. Fullback Nicky Fualaau scored on a 1-yard run to lift Liberty from a 21-20 deficit with 2:53 remaining.

James Madison (9-4) drove the ball to the Liberty 27, but on a fourth-down play, quarterback Vad Lee's intended pass to Daniel Brown was broken up by Flames cornerback Kenny Scott.

Liberty committed four turnovers to JMU's one, but held the ball for 39 minutes, 1 second. D.J. Abnar rushed for 69 yards and two touchdowns, and place-kicker John Lunsford had a 56-yarder among his two field goals. He has the three longest field goals in the FCS this season (60, 57 and 56).

Lee threw for 139 yards and one touchdown with an interception, adding 57 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Jauan Latney finished with 119 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

Safety Dean Marlowe added two interceptions for James Madison, which entered the matchup on a seven-game winning streak.

Tacko Fall helps Liberty Christian beat Oak Ridge, Antonio Blakeney

With a 7-foot-6 center on one team and one of the nations best shooting guards on the other, there was no lack of excitement.

In the end, it was big man Tacko Fall, who scored 27 points for Tavares Liberty Christian in a 106-101 double-overtime victory against host Oak Ridge and Antonio Blakeney at the Breast Cancer Awareness Classic on Saturday.

I was kind of exhausted, but then when I saw we were up, that fired me up a little bit, said Fall, a UCF commit. Antonio [is the hardest thing about playing them]. Hes a great shooter.

Ive been trash talking to Antonio and hes been trash talking to me, too. Finally, we got the win over them.

Blakeney, ranked second in the nation at his position by ESPN, racked up a game-high 47 points for Oak Ridge.

The score was tied at 89 at the end of the first overtime. Falls presence was exaggerated in the second OT. He blocked more shots, picked up more rebounds and downed a few free throws to give the Lions an edge before fouling out with 17 seconds left.

Alberto Moreno had 30 points for Liberty Christian and scored the tying bucket in the first OT period.

We played earlier in the preseason and they beat us at the buzzer, so my guys were really anxious to get another shot at them, said Liberty Christian coach Tony Atkins. Tacko Fall, his defensive presence really did it. We also had some kids make some big shots for us down the stretch.

One of the biggest plays was Ludy Kayoulouds three-pointer at the end of regulation, which tied the game at 76.

Blakeney scored 14 of his points in overtime, including two threes that closed a 101-95 gap in double OT. Alex Owens scored 18 points for the Pioneers.

New threat to Galpagos wildlife

Wildlife on the Galpagos is under a new threat. The scientific group that has helped to preserve the islands giant tortoises and other unique creatures is on the brink of closure because of a row about a gift shop.

Local traders have objected to the Charles Darwin Foundation running a souvenir shop at its research station at Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz island. They claim it was siphoning business from their own shops and in July local officials, backed by the government of Ecuador which owns the Galpagos, ordered the stations shops to be shut.

The impact for the foundation which carries out wildlife research in the Galpagos and provides key scientific advice on protecting wildlife there has been devastating, its executive director Swen Lorenz told the Observer.

The shop provides us with about $8,000 a week in income from the sale of souvenirs to tourists. Losing that key source of funds was bad enough but it has also affected other donations. People dont see why they should give us money if the Ecuador government will not support us by letting us run a gift shop.

There has been a dreadful chain reaction following the shops closure and we have run out of cash. The foundation is now two-and-a-half months late with salaries for its staff and some projects have had to be suspended. One key staff member has already left.

We are now on the brink, added Lorenz. Its going to be touch and go. The Ecuador government has since said it supports us, but unless we get some money from them and are allowed to reopen our shop in the next few weeks we will have to close.

The Galpagos are an archipelago of volcanic islands in the Pacific, 560 miles west of the coast of Ecuador, and are renowned for the species of birds and reptiles unique to the islands. These creatures include the marine iguana, the only species of iguana that can forage at sea; the Galpagos giant tortoise, the worlds largest tortoise species; and the Galpagos hawk.

The islands also played a key role in helping Charles Darwin to formulate his theory of natural selection. On his round-the world voyage on the Beagle, the young biologist stayed on the islands for a month in 1835, noting the subtle variations in species from each of the islands.

In particular, Darwin was fascinated by differences in colour and beak shape in the islands mockingbirds and finches (now known as Darwins finches), observations that played a critical role in developing his evolutionary theory.
