Asia takes the lead in the international tourism market

Asia is a global driving force China is out in front spearheading the boom ITB World Travel Trends Report analyses current developments in Asian source markets

Berlin, 3 December 2014 Asia continues to be the driving force in international tourism. This is one of the findings of the ITB World Travel Trends Report which every year is commissioned by ITB Berlin, the world's leading travel trade show. According to its figures, during the first eight months of this year the number of outbound trips from Asia rose by eight per cent, which was double the global growth rate. Further growth is predicted. According to the latest forecast of the tourism consultancy IPK International, in 2015 Asian citizens will undertake above-average numbers of trips and, with growth still at eight per cent, will easily overtake other nations in the outbound travel market.

The figures produced by the World Travel Monitor impressively demonstrate that in recent years Asia has gradually become the most important driving force in the international tourism market. From 2009 to 2013 outbound trips from Asia increased by 53 per cent. That is more than twice the average global growth rate (22 per cent). China easily came out ahead, while Japan's share of the market declined considerably, due to deflation. Together with China it still accounted for more than half of all outbound trips from Asia. Travellers from South Korea, India and Taiwan displayed an increasing lust for travel and these countries reported steady growth.

As far as destinations were concerned the majority of Asians (75 per cent) preferred to holiday on their own continent. The next most popular countries were Europe and North America (15 and nine per cent respectively), in contrast to the Australia and Pacific region, South America and Africa, which were not among Asians' preferred destinations.

Business travel in decline city breaks and beach holidays more and more popular Foreign business trips were slightly in decline, whereas in 2013 holiday trips occupied an increasingly large share of the market (72 per cent). In terms of the types of holidays being taken it was possible to note certain changes. In 2013 round trips to several countries continued to be popular with many Asians. However, the market share here fell to slightly below 40 per cent, while the number of city breaks and beach holidays in the sun increased. The internet became an increasingly important booking tool. Since 2009 online bookings have almost doubled and currently stand at 60 per cent, while bookings by travel agencies are in decline. All the same, for Asians they remain an important source of personal advice when making bookings.

Steady rise in inbound trips to Asia The number of trips to Asia also increased. According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), during the first six months of 2014 international tourism arrivals in the Asia/Pacific region rose by five per cent, which is lower than last year's growth rate (seven per cent).

Economic growth in Asia remains stable Commenting on the economic situation in Asia at the 22nd World Travel Monitor Forum in Pisa Dr. Gernot Nerb said: "Economic growth in Asia remains stable." This year the economic expert at the Munich ifo Institute for Economic Research expects the region's GDP to rise by 4.7 per cent and in 2015 by 4.6 per cent.

All the findings are based on information from papers held at the World Travel Monitor Forum in Pisa, which is sponsored by ITB Berlin. Every year the consultancy IPK International invites more than 50 tourism experts and researchers from around the world to present the latest statistics and trends in international tourism.

Other results of the January to August 2014 trend surveys conducted by IPK as well as the assessments of more than 50 tourism experts from over 20 countries and the core data of the World Travel Monitor will be published exclusively by ITB Berlin. Detailed information will be available in the ITB World Travel Trends Report in early December at http://www.itb-berlin.com. At the ITB Future Day of the ITB Berlin Convention Rolf Freitag, president of IPK International, will present the findings of the World Travel Monitor for the entire year, as well as the latest forecasts for 2015. The World Travel Monitor is based on the findings of representative interviews carried out with more than 500,000 people in over 60 global travel markets. It has been published regularly for more than 20 years and is recognised as the most widescale continuous survey examining global travel trends.

ITB Berlin 2015 will take place from Wednesday to Sunday, 4 to 8 March. From the Wednesday to the Friday ITB Berlin is open to trade visitors only. The ITB Berlin Convention is held parallel with the trade fair, from Wednesday to Saturday, 4 to 7 March 2015. It is the world"s largest specialist convention for the industry. More details are available at http://www.itb-convention.com. ITB Berlin is the leading trade fair for the worldwide travel industry. In 2014 a total of 10,147 companies and organisations from 189 countries exhibited their products and services to 174,000 visitors, who included 114,000 trade visitors.

World travel alerts: El Salvador, Thailand, Netherlands

El Salvador: The U.S. State Department reissued a travel warning citing high levels of crime against tourists as cause for alarm. Officials reported that 33 Americans were murdered and 366 had passports stolen or were victims of other crimes while visiting the country in the last four years. Though there is no evidence that Americans are specific targets, muggings, car thefts and home invasions have all been reported at high levels. Tourists visiting national parks have been victims of armed robberies as well, and it is recommended that climbers and hikers seek certified guides when visiting these areas.

Netherlands: Tourists in Amsterdam should use extreme caution while seeking to experiment with many of the city's readily available controlled substances. Officials reported that a toxic substance sold as cocaine (which is illegal in the country) has killed at least two tourists and caused severe health issues, including near-death, in several others. Authorities said that white heroin is being sold to tourists seeking cocaine and that use of the substance is not only illegal, it can be lethal.

Nepal: Conservationists and local tourism officials are developing a 14-mile trail through Chitwan National Park to improve tourist access and reduce the trek between Sauraha and Madi to about 12 hours; now it's about two days. Cottages will be built along the trail to provide overnight accommodations and wildlife viewing, officials said. The area is popular for observing tigers, hippopotamuses and elephants, and a security plan is being worked out to protect visitors from potentially harmful encounters.

Thailand: Beachgoers once again can haul shade umbrellas to the beaches of Phuket, after a ban against them was put in place last June. For now, umbrellas will be allowed at several beaches, including Surin, Layan, Laypang and Bang Tao, but tourists should check with local authorities, as routine attempts at beach cleanups have spurred crackdowns on overcrowding and the presence of vendors at public beaches.

Japan: Inconsiderate behavior has caused officials to ban photography at many of the country's temples. Tourists with tripods and others who block walkways and step into gardens for the perfect snapshot have become a nuisance. Among the sites banning photography are the Genko-an, Jissoin Daigo-ji and Adashino Nenbutsu-ji temples in Kyoto and the Sekihoji Temple in Tokyo. Other temples have varying restrictions, and visitors should always ask about specific photography rules and should check with visitor centers before snapping pictures. Temples should always be respected as places of worship.

Final PL table: Super computer predicts glory for Chelsea and Man United but Liverpool misery

The boffins at Bloomberg Sports have used their super computer to predict the outcome of this years Premier League and it makes comforting reading for Chelsea and Manchester United fans.

Manchester City may have reduced the gap between themselves and Jose Mourinho's front runners with a 3-0 win at Southampton, but Bloomberg currently predict Chelsea will run out comfortable winners at the end of the season.

The conclusion produced from the numbers crunched in their complex algorithm is that Chelsea will lift the Premier League title with just shy of 90points, while City are projected to achieve around 83 points.

Well adrift, but in third place, is Manchester United, ahead of you guessed it, Arsenal in fourth.

Liverpool currently 11th in the table are predicted to make up lots of ground, but at this stage the super computer says they will only make it to sixth in the final table, behind Tottenham.

Theres misery for last season's promoted teams, as Bloomberg are presently forcasting relegation forQPR, Leicester and Burnley.

Its worth keeping in mind that Bloombergs predicted table is constantly updated as calculations adjust according to the results of each Premier League matchday, but for the moment, it makes for interesting reading.

Super Typhoon Hagupit to hit Philippines

One of the most powerful storms of 2014 is bearing down on the country bringing the threat of damaging winds and floods.

The Philippines are preparing for the arrival of what could be the strongest typhoon of 2014.Super Typhoon Hagupit is expected to strike the country at the weekend as the equivalent of a Category 2 or 3 hurricane on the five point Saffir-Simpson scale with sustained winds close to 200kph.

Hugupit is currently intensifying. Peak winds on Friday, when the typhoon is still over open water, are expected to reach 315kph with gusts of 380kph. Thunderstorms are rising to nearly 16km into the atmosphere and rainfall rates are an astonishing 138mm per hour.

The threat posed by Hagupit has caused great concern across the country, as it comes just over one year since Super Typhoon Haiyan. Haiyan will live long in the memory for many Filipinos as it was the strongest storm ever to hit the country with sustained winds just before landfall of 315kph. It was also the deadliest storm to hit the Philippines; 6,300 people lost their lives as a result of damaging winds and a massive storm surge which peaked at over 6 metres in the port city of Tacloban on the central island of Leyte.

There is great concern for the residents of the area as at least 3,500 families are still living in tents and temporary structures. Authorities have already evacuated 10 to 15,000 people from their homes. There is still considerable doubt as to the exact track Hagupit will take. The US Joint Typhoon Warning Center favours a track which takes Haugpit northwards towards central Luzon as a Category 4 or 5 system.

Most other computer predictions, including the usually reliable European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, track Hagupit on a more westerly track with landfall on Samar island during Saturday. If, as seems likely, but by no means certain, the storm follows this trajectory, it will move across slightly cooler waters. This, coupled with less favourable winds higher in the atmosphere, should see Hagupit weaken to the equivalent of a Category 2 to 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 180 to 200kph. These winds will bring huge waves but storm surge predictions are currently less than one metre. It may well be that the greatest threat to life and property comes not from the winds or the waves, but from the rainfall. Between 300 and 600mm of rain could fall in a matter of hours. This will pose a high risk of flooding and mudslides.

Super Typhoon Hagupit may try for a near-repeat of deadly Typhoon Haiyan

Typhoon Hagupit as it intensified on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014.

Image: NOAA

By Andrew Freedman2014-12-03 18:14:52 UTC

Update: 9:10 a.m. ET: Super Typhoon Hagupit may be peaking in strength this morning, with maximum sustained winds of about 170 miles per hour. All weather agencies, from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in the U.S. to the Philippines' own agency known as PAGASA, now forecast the storm making a slow trek across several Philippine islands starting on Saturday. However, these agencies still disagree on the storm track and intensity, and the specifics are going to matter a great deal.

It will not be nearly as intense as Super Typhoon Haiyan was last year when that storm made landfall near Tacloban in the central Philippines. Still, Hagupit, also known as Typhoon Ruby in the Philippines, poses a multitude of life-threatening risks, from rainfall-induced landslides to high winds and storm surge flooding.

Update: 5:15 p.m. ET: Typhoon Hagupit has been upgraded to super typhoon status, with maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour as of 5 p.m. ET. The storm is forecast to intensify further, potentially reaching high-end Category 5 status with maximum sustained winds of 185 miles per hour on Thursday.

The latest storm track forecast from the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center has shifted the storm west compared to the previous forecast, which would take the storm closer to the Philippines, while still turning the storm to the north as it approaches the island nation. However, the Philippines' own forecast agency, in a forecast that is supported by forecast agencies in Japan, Taiwan and other Asian nations, is predicting the storm will make landfall near the island of Leyte on Saturday, local time. This would affect the same area as Super Typhoon Haiyan last year.

However, even if the storm reaches Category 5 intensity on Wednesday night and Thursday, it is likely to slow its forward speed significantly and weaken before it approaches the Philippines. However, it is still forecast to be a typhoon at that point.

Super Typhoon Hagupit is now the sixth super typhoon to form in the Western Pacific Ocean so far this year.

Update: 3:30 p.m. ET: Typhoon Hagupit has intensified significantly since Wednesday morning, and is now nearing super typhoon status, at the border of a Category 4 or 5 storm based on satellite imagery. It is expected to remain a very intense storm through at least Thursday, before it begins weakening as it gets closer to the Philippines.

Clemson researchers work to change DNA, prevent disease

CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) - Stopping disease before it starts, changing DNA, finding treatments and reversing debilitating disorders, are all types of personalized medicine that may arrive in the not-too distant future. Researchers at Clemson University are on the front lines of making it happen.

The work is in beginning stages, using Clemson's super computer, The Palmetto Cluster, for complex calculations, but doctors and patients expect the work to change their world.

It's a change that Connor Raymond's family can't see come soon enough.

Even as a baby, now-six-year-old Connor's parents knew something wasn't quite right. His mom, Katia Luedtke, remembers that he was missing milestones that typical babies made. She said that by six-months-old, Connor couldn't sit up, roll over, or hold his head up.

After years of testing, Connor was diagnosed with Snyder-Robinson Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the body and intellectual capacity.

As one of just 821 in the world with Snyder-Robinson, Connor's family was astonished to find that Dr. Emil Alexov, at Clemson University's Department of Physics, was studying their son's disorder.

Alexov and his team of post-doctorate fellows use computer modeling to analyze individual DNA molecules in people with many different mental disorders. He said they're trying to figure out how small differences in DNA affects human health.

Since each molecule is made of hundreds of thousands of atoms, the team needs The Palmetto Cluster to make millions of computations. On a regular computer, that could take years, but even on the super computer, one calculation could take a couple weeks.

Alexov said the most important part is to figure out how the molecule acts when it's healthy and when it's not. That, he said, will bring them closer to developing treatment.

Eventually, they want to physically fix a genetic difference.

Balotelli issues apology for posting controversial image but Liverpool striker still facing FA rap

Mario Balotelli has apologised for a post on social media which provoked claims of racism and anti-semitism.

The Liverpool striker shared an image from the computer game 'Super Mario' on his Instagram page on Monday which included the comment "jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a Jew".

The image of Super Mario - with whom Balotelli shares a nickname - appeared with the heading "Don't be a racist". The text then read: "Be like Mario. He's an Italian plumber, created by Japanese people, who speaks English and looks like a Mexican," before the final line, which led to a storm of criticism.

Balotelli quickly deleted the post before defending himself on Twitter by writing: "My Mom is jewish so all of u shut up please".

But he took to Twitter again on Tuesday morning to issue a full apology after the FA confirmed it is launching an investigation.

"I apologise if I've offended anyone," he wrote. "The post was meant to be anti-racist with humour. I now understand that out of context may have the opposite effect.

"Not all Mexicans have moustache, not all black people jump high and not all Jewish people love money.

"I used a cartoon done by someone else because it has Super Mario and I thought it was funny and not offensive. Again, I'm sorry."

Despite the apology, Balotelli could still be charged by the Football Association, with a spokesman for the governing body confirming it is looking into the post.

Under their social media guidelines, the minimum ban for race-related breaches of rules is five games.

Not all induced pluripotent stem cells are made equal: McMaster researchers

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE:

3-Dec-2014

Contact: Veronica McGuire vmcguir@mcmaster.ca 90-552-591-402-2169 McMaster University @mcmasteru

Hamilton, ON (Dec. 3, 2014) - Scientists at McMaster University have discovered that human stem cells made from adult donor cells "remember" where they came from and that's what they prefer to become again.

This means the type of cell obtained from an individual patient to make pluripotent stem cells, determines what can be best done with them. For example, to repair the lung of a patient with lung disease, it is best to start off with a lung cell to make the therapeutic stem cells to treat the disease, or a breast cell for the regeneration of tissue for breast cancer patients.

Pluripotency is the ability stem cells have to turn into any one of the 226 cell types that make up the human body. The work challenges the previously accepted thought that any pluripotent human stem cell could be used to similarly to generate the same amount of mature tissue cells.

This finding, published today in the prestigious science journal Nature Communications, will be used to further drug development at McMaster, and potentially improve transplants using human stem cell sources.

The study was led by Mick Bhatia, director of the McMaster Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Human Stem Cell Biology and he is a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.

"It's like the stem cell we make wants to become a doctor like its grandpa or an artist like its great-grandma," said Bhatia.

"We've shown that human induced pluripotent stem cells, called iPSCs, have a memory that is engraved at the molecular/genetic level of the cell type used to make them, which increases their ability to differentiate to the parent tissue type after being put in various stem cell states.

UF researchers recruiting local pets for arthritis study

ORLANDO, Fla. -

If you think your dog is suffering from arthritis, researchers at the University of Floridas Health Science Center want you.

[WEB EXTRA: See if your pet meets study criteria | More info on stem cell process ]

Well, actually your pet.

Your dog may be eligible for a blind study being conducted by the University of Floridas College of Veterinary Medicine.

UF veterinarians are looking for 30 dogs, ages 2 to 10 years old, to participate in the next phase of a stem cell therapy project.

The dogs must be healthy, 10 to 120 pounds, and should have been diagnosed with elbow arthritis or dysplasia by their local vet.

Doctors are injecting stem cells directly into the elbows (front leg joints) of the animals to determine if the treatment will decrease the inflammation and pain associated with elbow dysplasia.

Dr. Stanley Kim, a specialist in small animal surgery, says some pets are given a placebo and not even the owner will know if saline or stem cells have been injected into the pets joints until the 6 month study is completed.

The dogs are evaluated at one month, three months and then again at six months but no dog will be left without the stem cell therapy.

Newswise Hamilton, ON (Dec. 3, 2014) Scientists at McMaster University have discovered that human stem cells made from adult donor cells remember where they came from and thats what they prefer to become again.

Weve shown that human induced pluripotent stem cells, called iPSCs, have a memory that is engraved at the molecular/genetic level of the cell type used to make them, which increases their ability to differentiate to the parent tissue type after being put in various stem cell states.

So, not all human iPSCs are made equal, Bhatia added. Moving forward, this means that iPSC generation from a specific tissue requiring regeneration is a better approach for future cellular therapies. Besides being faster and more cost-efficient in the development of stem cell therapy treatments, this provides a new opportunity for use of iPSCs in disease modeling and personalized drug discovery that was not appreciated before.

New novel by Jean Gilbertson choreographs spiritual ballet

SEATTLE, Wash (PRWEB) December 03, 2014

Inspired by two loves spirituality and ballet author Jean Gilbertson combines the two in her new book, Dancing on the Whisper of God: A Novel (published by Trafford Publishing).

In Gilbertsons new book, choreographer Calvin Tropp is jolted awake by a divine directive and launches a hard-driving, 63-day effort to prepare a new ballet from scratch with the theme of prayer. All of the choreography and music must be developed and dancers must learn their parts. In the process, they discover the power prayer has to change their lives.

Dancing on the Whisper of God is not a book about religion, nor is it about Christianity, Gilbertson says. Its about spiritual awakening and the transformation that can come from it. The transforming power of prayer is available to all of us.

An excerpt from Dancing on the Whisper of God:

The room was as quiet as predawn. Every face was turned toward him. What this voice said was, We are going to make a new dance and the theme is prayer. Now why I did not shake that off as a silly dream, roll over, and go back to sleep, I cannot tell you. He corrected himself. Well, maybe I can.

Merit and spiritual growth

The performance of deeds of merit forms one of the most essential elements of Buddhist practice. Its various modes provide in their totality a compendium of applied Buddhism, showing Buddhism not as a system of ideas but as a complete way of life. Buddhist popular belief has often emphasized merit as a productive source of worldly blessings - of health, wealth, long life, beauty and friends. As a result of this emphasis, meritorious activity has come to be conceived rather in terms of a financial investment, as a religious business venture yielding returns to the satisfaction of the agent's mundane desires.

While such a conception no doubt contains an element of truth, its popularization has tended to eclipse the more important function merit plays in the context of Buddhist practice. Seen in correct perspective, merit is an essential ingredient in the harmony and completeness of the spiritual life, a means of self-cultivation, and an indispensable stepping-stone to spiritual progress.

The accumulation of a "stock of merit" is a primary requisite for acquiring all the fruits of the Buddhist religious life, from a pleasant abiding here and now to a favorable rebirth in the life to come, from the initial stages of meditative progress to the realization of the states of sanctity that come as the fruits of entering upon the noble path. The highest fruition of merit is identical with the culmination of the Buddhist holy life itself - that is, emancipation from the shackles of samsaric existence and the realization of Nibbana, the unconditioned state beyond the insubstantial phenomena of the world. The mere piling up of merit, to be sure, is not in itself sufficient to guarantee the attainment of this goal. Merit is only one requisite, and it must be balanced by its counterpart to secure the breakthrough from bondage to final freedom. The counterpart of merit is knowledge (ana), the direct confrontation with the basic truths of existence through the eye of intuitive wisdom.

Quest for deliverance

Merit and knowledge together constitute the two sets of equipment the spiritual aspirant requires in the quest for deliverance, the equipment of merit (puasambhara) and the equipment of knowledge (anasambhara), respectively. Each set of equipment has its own contribution to make to the fulfillment of the spiritual life.

The equipment of merit facilitates progress in the course of samsaric wandering: it brings a favorable rebirth, the encounter with good friends to guide one's footsteps along the path, the meeting with opportunities for spiritual growth, the flowering of the lofty qualities of character, and the maturation of the spiritual faculties required for the higher attainments.

The equipment of knowledge brings the factor directly necessary for cutting the bonds of samsaric existence: the penetration of truth, enlightenment, the undistorted comprehension of the nature of actuality.

Either set of equipment, functioning in isolation, is insufficient to the attainment of the goal; either pursued alone leads to a deviant, one-sided development that departs from the straight path to deliverance taught by the Buddha. Merit without knowledge produces pleasant fruit and a blissful rebirth, but cannot issue in the transcendence of the mundane order and entrance upon the supramundane path. And knowledge without the factors of merit deteriorates into dry intellectualism, mere erudition or scholasticism, impotent when confronted with the task of grasping a truth outside the pale of intellection. But when they function together in unison in the life of the aspirant, the two sets of equipment acquire a potency capable of propelling him to the heights of realization. When each set of equipment complements the other, polishes the other, and perfects the other, then they undergo a graduated course of mutual purification culminating at the crest in the twin endowments of the Emancipated One - in that clear knowledge (vijja) and flawless conduct (carana) which make him, in the words of the Buddha, "supreme among gods and humans."

Spiritual dynamics

But while merit and knowledge thus occupy coordinate positions, it is merit that claims priority from the standpoint of spiritual dynamics. The reason is that works of merit come first in the process of inner growth. If knowledge be the flower that gives birth to the fruit of liberation, and faith (saddha) the seed out of which the flower unfolds, then merit is the soil, water and fertilizer all in one - the indispensable nutriment for every stage of growth. Merit paves the way for knowledge, and finds in knowledge the sanction for its own claim to a place in the system of Buddhist training.
