Can traveling through outer space reverse the aging process?

A new study cracks the door open to just that possibility, but Colorado State University professor Susan Bailey says age-conscious adventurers shouldnt boldly go just yet.

A lot of the work is still to be done, she said.

Bailey was among a handful of researchers selected to participate in one of the most ingenious science experiments of our time. In 2015, astronaut Scott Kelly was launched into orbit to spend a year aboard the International Space Station. His identical twin brother, Mark, remained on Earth. Bailey and her colleagues studied how they changed part of a NASA project to figure out how long-term space flight impacts human health in prelude to a possible trip to Mars.

Baileys work, specifically, focused on the Kellys DNA and the critical pieces called telomeres.

What are telomeres? Theyre the little bits of genetic coding that reside on the ends of each chromosome and provide a buffer like tiny DNA bumpers for the more important stuff in the code. As people get older, their telomeres generally shorten, and many researchers believe this shortening contributes to the ways the body breaks down as it ages. As a result, telomere length has become something of an obsession among anti-aging enthusiasts.

Going into the study, Bailey assumed that the stresses of space travel would accelerate the shortening of Scott Kellys telomeres. When she and her colleagues ran the tests, though, they found the opposite occurred. While Scott Kelly was in space, his telomeres actually grew longerwhile Marks remained more or less the same length. When Scottreturned to Earth, his telomeres shrank back to the same length as Marks.

Samples taken from other astronauts appear to confirm the finding that telomeres lengthen in space, Bailey said.

You do the research, and youre always surprised, Bailey said. I couldnt be more surprised by this result.

Cue the headlines proclaiming space flight a fountain of youth.

Except that may not be whats going on.

In any one person, telomere lengths arent always the same they can vary greatly from cell to cell. Bailey said it is possible that the extra-strong radiation that astronauts are exposed to in space might weed out cells with shorter telomeres, leaving only those with long ones and creating the impression that telomere lengths grew.

Perhaps those cells are dying, and that gives you the shift, she said.

Bailey said more research is needed to learn if something about being in space actually builds up telomeres by activating the enzyme, called telomerase, that constructs them. Even if it does, thats not necessarily a good thing, she said, because telomerase activity is also key to cancer cell growth.

If theres something about space flight that is activating telomerase, youve turned on one of the steps toward carcinogenisis, Bailey said.

That means, rather than finding a tidy conclusion, Baileys research has so far turned up mostly questions. All that she knows right now for certain, she said, is that Scott and Mark Kelly were basically the same when Scott left Earth and they returned to being basically the same afterhe landed.

We do need to figure out what was happening in the middle there, she said.

The character: Bobbie Draper, a soldierof Polynesian ancestry, six foot and 100 kilos of pure muscle.

The Expanse's producers were reportedly so aware of doing Bobbie right that they structured the plot of the season's first few episodes to ease the actress into the role.

"What we did on a creative level was slowly work [the character] into the season she's in [Episodes] 1, 3 and 6 partially so she could get used to the part and partially so we could get used to writing the character," executive producerNarenShankar said.

Casting directorsRobin Cook (based in Canada),Julie Tucker and her team (working out of New York) and New Zealand-basedLiz Mullane were all involved in the hunt for Bobbie, but Ostby said that at the beginning of the search, he was pretty sure that "New Zealand would be a very interesting place to look."

Adams' New Zealand agent,Imogen Johnson, said they were lucky to have Mullane working out of New Zealand.

"We are very lucky that top New Zealand casting director Liz Mullaneis a huge fan of Frankie's and worked closely with her and us to secure this role.

"The production were doing a world wide search for this character but as soon as they saw Frankie's audition she was short-listed.We then worked in tandem with her US reps and assisted with closing of her the deal and she literally had to leave for Canada a week later. We couldn't be prouder of her!"

Adams, born in New Zealand of Samoan heritage, had two television roles under her belt, asUla Levi inShortland StreetandTasha Goodwin inWentworth.

The Expanseproducers were excited not only by her acting experience, but also by her work as an amateur boxer.

According to executive producer Mark Fergus, it was book author Ty Franck who first saw Adams' tape and identified her as the right choice.

"It was ahuge thrill for us that one of the guys who invented her character just saw right into her eyes and knew it was her almost immediately," he said.

Getting the role was a huge thrill for Adams, too. Speaking to IndieWire, she said she "screamed in excitement" when she got the phone call.

She was concerned she wouldn't be muscular enough for the part, so embarked on a training regime of strength and conditioning work, with no cardio.

Shankar said finding Adams was well worth the search.

"It requires you to work harder and to go to places that haven't traditionally been on the radar," he said.

"But when you do, you're always getting rewarded for it."

The Expanse Season Two premieres on SKY's The Zone on February 8, 8.30pm.

Shawna Pandya clears the air on rumours of space travel – Daily News & Analysis

Dr Shawna Pandya has been leading an interesting life for a while now, but its only recently the citizen scientist has been finding herself in the news. Reports indicate Dr Pandya might be next in line as the third woman of Indian-origin to make her way into space, but things arent exactly as clear as all that. Were going to break it down for you right now.

Dr Shawna Pandya is a 32-year-old general practitioner based in Alberta, Canada. Many reports indicate shes a neurosurgeon, but Dr Pandya herself has stated that, though she trained in neurosurgery for a short period, her medical licence is as a general practitioner. However, medicine isnt her only scientific love, given that she registered for two citizen scientist-astronaut programs (CSA) years ago.

Dr Pandya is part of both Project PoSSUM and the PHEnOM Project, both of which are research projects that dont actually involve going into space. PoSSUM is an acronym for Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere. It involves imaging noctilucent clouds from a high-altitude balloon over Antarctica, as well as later using manned reusable suborbital vehicles to study the fine structures of the clouds during a week-long deployment. And while PoSSUM evolved out of an earlier NASA-funded project to study climate change, its not officially a NASA venture, and instead works in partnership with the Canadian National Research Council.

PHEnOM, on the other hand, stands for Physiological, Health, and Environmental Observations in Microgravity. Its a project by the SeaSpace Exploration & Research Societys SeaSpace Research Institute and focuses on studying the effects of microgravity on humans, including research in biomedical science, pharmacology, and materials science. This project, similar to PoSSUM, is not tied to any space agency like NASA or the ESA, but is instead under the SeaSpace Societys ambit, in the US.

While participants in both these projects are highly qualified individuals in the fields of engineering, research, and medicine, and also receive astronaut training of a sort, the teams never leave Earths gravity entirely. Instead, research is carried out in Earth-bound labs, parabolic aircraft, and eventually commercial suborbital spaceflight vehicles.

As you can see once all the information is gathered, Dr Shawna Pandya is a qualified doctor, now a trained citizen scientist-astronaut, and a researcher in her own right. However, this is far from circulating reports that indicate shes joining the ranks of Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams. Dr Pandya herself has indicated that, despite being on the CSA team of the PHEnOM Project, theres still no guarantee of her being onboard the flights into upper altitudes, instead of one of her other crew members.

Yet, even if Dr Pandya may not have the chance to really break free from Earths gravity and experience the final frontier, shes still getting closer to it than most us could dream of, and her teams research will greatly benefit those that do have that chance. That in itself is definitely something worthy of pride, so lets not do her a disservice by muddling her contributions.

How Robots Helped Create 100000 Jobs at Amazon – Singularity Hub

Accelerating technology has been creating a lot of worry over job loss to automation, especially as machines become capable of doing things they never could in the past. A recent report released by the McKinsey Global Institute estimated that 49 percent of job activities could currently be fully automatedthat equates to 1.1 billion workers globally.

What gets less buzz is the other side of the coin: automation helping to create jobs. Believe it or not, it does happen, and we can look at one of the worlds largest retailers to see that.

Thanks in part to more robots in its fulfillment centers, Amazon has been able to drive down shipping costs and pass those savings on to customers. Cheaper shipping made more people use Amazon, and the company hired more workers to meet this increased demand.

So what do the robots do, and what do the people do?

Tasks involving fine motor skills, judgmentor unpredictability are handled by people. They stock warehouse shelves with items that come off delivery trucks. A robot could do this, except that to maximize shelf space, employees are instructed to stack items according to how they fit on the shelf rather than grouping them by type.

Robots can only operate in a controlled environment, performing regular and predictable tasks. Theyve largely taken over heavy lifting, including moving pallets between shelvesgood news for warehouse workers backsas well as shuttling goods from one end of a warehouse to another.

Under current technology, the expense of building robots able to stock shelves based on available space is more costly and less logical than hiring people to do it.

Similarly, for outgoing orders, robots do the lifting and transportation, but not the selecting or packing. A robot brings an entire shelf of goods to an employees workstation, where the employee selects the correct item and puts it on a conveyor belt for another employee to package. By this time, the shelf-carrying robot is already returning the first shelf and retrieving another.

Since loading trucks also requires spatial judgment and can be unpredictablespace must be maximized here even more than on shelvespeople take care of this too.

Ever since acquiring Boston-based robotics company Kiva Systemsin March 2012at a price tag of $775 millionAmazon has been ramping up its use of robots and is continuing to pour funds into automation research, both for robots and delivery drones.

In 2016 the company grew its robot workforce by 50 percent, from 30,000 to 45,000. Far from laying off 15,000 people, though, Amazon increased human employment by around 50 percent in the same period of time.

Even better, the companys Q4 2016 earnings report included the announcement that it plans to create more than 100,000 new full-time, full-benefit jobs in the US over the next 18 months. New jobs will be based across the country and will include various types of experience, education, and skill levels.

So how tight is the link between robots and increased productivity? Would there be even more jobs if people were doing the robots work?

Well, picture an employee walking (or even running) around a massive warehouse, locating the right shelf, climbing a ladder to reach the item hes looking for, grabbing it, climbing back down the ladder (carefully, of course), and walking back to his work station to package it for shipping. Now multiply the time that whole process took by the hundreds of thousands of packages shipped from Amazon warehouses each day.

Lots more time. Lots less speed. Fewer packages shipped. Higher costs. Lower earnings. No growth.

Though it may not last forever, right now Amazons robot-to-human balance is clearly in employees favor. Automation can take jobs away, but sometimes it can create them too.

Physicists Unveil Blueprint for a Quantum Computer the Size of a Soccer Field – Singularity Hub

Quantum computers promise to crack some of the worlds most intractable problems by super-charging processing power. But the technical challenges involved in building these machines mean theyve still achieved just a fraction of what they are theoretically capable of.

Now physicists from the UK have created a blueprint for a soccer-field-sized machine they say could reach the blistering speeds that would allow them to solve problems beyond the reach of todays most powerful supercomputers.

The system is based on a modular design interlinking multiple independent quantum computing units, which could be scaled up to almost any size. Modular approaches have been suggested before, but innovations such as a far simpler control system and inter-module connection speeds 100,000 times faster than the state-of-the-art make this the first practical proposal for a large-scale quantum computer.

For many years, people said that it was completely impossible to construct an actual quantum computer. With our work we have not only shown that it can be done, but now we are delivering a nuts and bolts construction plan to build an actual large-scale machine, professor Winfried Hensinger, head of the Ion Quantum Technology Group at the University of Sussex who led the research, said in a press release.

The technology at the heart of the individual modules is already well-established and relies on trapping ions (charged atoms) in magnetic fields to act as qubits, the basic units of information in quantum computers.

While bits in conventional computers can have a value of either 1 or 0, qubits take advantage of the quantum mechanical phenomena of superposition, which allows them to be both at the same time.

As Elizabeth Gibney explains in Nature, this is what makes quantum computers so incredibly fast. The set of qubits comprising the memory of a quantum computer could exist in every possible combination of 1s and 0s at once. Where a classical computer has to try each combination in turn, a quantum computer could process all those combinations simultaneously.

In a paper published in the journal Science Advances last week, researchers outline designs for modules containing roughly 2,500 qubits and suggest interlinking thousands of them together to create a machine containing two billion qubits. For comparison, Canadian firm D-Wave, the only commercial producer of quantum computers, just brought out its latest model featuring 2,000 qubits.

This is not the first time a modular system like this has been suggested, but previous approaches have recommended using light waves traveling through fiberoptics to link the units. This results in interaction rates between modules far slower than the quantum operations happening within them, putting a handbrake on the systems overall speed. In the new design, the ions themselves are shuttled from one module to another using electrical fields, which results in 100,000 times faster connection speeds.

The system also has a much simpler way of controlling qubits. Previous designs required lasers to be carefully targeted at each ion, an enormous engineering challenge when dealing with billions of qubits. Instead, the new system uses microwave fields and the careful application of voltages, which is much easier to scale up.

The researchers concede there are still considerable technical challenges to building a device on the scale they have suggested, not to mention the cost. But they have already announced plans to build a prototype based on the design at the university at a cost of 1-2 million.

While this proposal is incredibly challenging, I wish more in the quantum community would think big like this, Christopher Monroe, a physicist at the University of Maryland who has worked on trapped-ion quantum computing, told Nature.

In their paper, the researchers predict their two billion qubit system could find the prime factors of a 617-digit-long number in 110 days. This is significant because many state-of-the-art encryption systems rely on the fact that factoring large numbers can take conventional computers thousands of years. This is why many in the cybersecurity world are nervous about the advent of quantum computing.

These researchers arent the only ones working on bringing quantum computing into the real world, though. Google, Microsoft and IBM are all developing their own systems, and D-Wave recently open-sourced a software tool that helps those without a background in quantum physics program its machines.

All that interest is due to the enormous potential of quantum computing to solve problems as diverse and complex as developing drugs for previously incurable diseases, devising new breeds of materials for high-performance superconductors, magnets and batteries and even turbo-charging machine learning and artificial intelligence.

"The availability of a universal quantum computer may have a fundamental impact on society as a whole, said Hensinger. Without doubt it is still challenging to build a large-scale machine, but now is the time to translate academic excellence into actual application, building on the UK's strengths in this ground-breaking technology.

The Shady Ascension of Luther Strange – New Republic

With Strange now picking out office furniture in Washington, D.C., Bentley has the privilege of selecting a new attorney general, a development that has Alabama reporters and political junkies whipped up into a fury. Columnist Kyle Whitmire wrote that the move set a new benchmark for Alabama corruption, adding: Its so nakedly political that someone should charge them with indecent exposure. Cartoonist J.D. Crowe drew a caricature of Strange and Bentley in the nude, with the governor reaching around to cup the new senators chest, a reference to an infamous clandestine recording of Bentley cooing about how much he loves to squeeze the breasts of his mistress Rebekah Mason.

Even some Republicans are saying the optics are bad. After all, Strange, a former D.C. lobbyist, has made a name for himself as a force against corruption. He came into office in 2010 as part of the GOPs historic takeover of all branches of state government, which had been dominated by Democrats since Reconstruction. Central to the campaign was a vow to fight corruption, and once in office Strange reconstituted the states special prosecution unit. One of its earliest targets was Mike Hubbard, speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives and mastermind of the Republican takeover. Strange recused himself from the case, citing his use of Hubbards printing company during his campaign. But after it ended with 12 felony convictions, Strange announced, This is a good day for the rule of law in our state. He added, This should send a clear message that in Alabama we hold public officials accountable for their actions.

During his two terms in office, Strange has presented himself as a tough enforcer of laws and constitutional rights, especially those that interest conservatives. As a leader in the Republican Attorney General Association (at the time of his Senate appointment he was chairman-elect) he helped spearhead legal opposition to the Obama administrations policies on immigration, environmental protection, health care, and LGBT rights. And hes made a big show of cracking down on violations of Alabamas gun laws, ordering libraries and community centers across the state to remove signs prohibiting fire arms.

But he has also been accused of politicizing the justice system, using the states anti-gambling laws to target casinos in predominantly black counties for alleged violations that his office has allowed at Indian-owned casinos. In 2013, the state seized electronic bingo machines and cash from VictoryLand Casino in Macon County, claiming that they were actually slot machines, which are illegal in the state. A circuit court later ordered Stranges office to return the machines, accusing him of cherry picking his enforcement of the law, because casinos owned by the Poarch Creek Indians are allowed to operate identical machines.

Strange has also brought suit against the tribe, but critics question the sincerity of these efforts. His case was absolutely based on the wrong question, says Bobby Singleton, a Democratic state senator from Greensboro. He knew he had no standing on it.

After the states raid, state Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Birmingham) wrote then-U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder asking him to investigate possible violations of voting rights. The citizens of Greene County in 2003 overwhelmingly voted in favor of state constitutional amendment 743 to authorize electronic bingo in the county, she wrote. The people of Greene County have been repeatedly targeted by the State in politically motivated raids in violation of their constitutional rights.

Strange appears to have benefited from this favoritism. Last March, Robbie McGee, the Poarch Creeks lobbyist, told Global Gaming Business Magazine that the tribe has a definitely more amenable relationship with Strange. At the time, the attorney general was eyeing the race for governor in 2018, and the magazine reported sources contend the Poarch Band has agreed to contribute millions of dollars to the effort.

Its unclear whether this arrangement will remain in place when Strange instead campaigns that year to retain his Senate seat. And now that hes accepted an appointment from a man his office is investigating, his race runs the risk of being an ugly one, especially if the investigation permanently stalls, just as many Alabama political insiders and journalists assume it will.

But while Strange has clearly gotten what he wanted, things might not be so easy for the embattled governor. State lawmakers are hurriedly resuscitating their impeachment hearings, and rumors of an ongoing federal investigation have not abated. And the states case against Bentley isnt dead yet. That investigation is in the hands of Matt Hart, head of the Special Prosecution Unit. A tenacious lawyer, Hart spearheaded the Mike Hubbard case, and a source close to the inquiry said, If Bentley thinks for one minute he can stop Hart by giving Luther his dream job, hes a bigger fool than I thought, according to Alabama Political Reporter.

On Thursday Bentley named as acting attorney general Alice Martin, a former U.S. attorney who, with Hart as her top assistant, won numerous legendary convictions against corrupt Alabama politicians in the early 2000s. Whether Bentley ultimately appoints her or someone else, the new attorney general will be diving into dangerous waters if they quash the investigation of the governor, according to Pamela Pierson, professor at the University of Alabamas law school. Theyre going to ruin their reputation if they do, she says. It could ruin their career.

Anyone associated with a grand jury case could file a complaint with the states bar association, Pierson explains, which could then launch an investigation and ultimately revoke the attorney generals license. Federal prosecutors could also conduct a conflict of interest investigation.

But then again, this is Alabama, where a politicized justice system is the norm. And the man wholl serve as boss to all federal prosecutors is an Alabamian, too. That man, Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III, reportedly lobbied hard for Big Luther to take his place in the Senate.

Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office investigating fake Facebook page – WBRZ

ASCENSION The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office is looking for the individual responsible for creating a fake sheriff's office page on Facebook.

The page claims to belong to the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office. It uses an official logo, however the page is filled with posts of false information.

Officials say the page can cause a serious problem for residents in the parish.

"I think this can turn into a real big problem because people will start following that page and believe in that page and with social media, rumors kinda get out there and spread in matter of seconds," Allison Hudson, of the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, said.

The difference between the fake page and real page is an apostrophe. The real page reads: Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, while the fake one reads: The Ascension Parish Sheriffs Office. The fake page also does not have a check mark next to it, which Facebook uses to show a verified account.

One resident, Karisti Fowler, said that she follows the Facebook page and relies on it to stay informed.

"If the person that did it, gives out the wrong information, that could hurt somebody," Fowler said.

Officials say that the fake page is reposting official messages from the real page, along with fake information.

"Fake messages, fake stories that did not happen here. What we are not sure of is if they are sending messages asking for any type of money," Hudson said.

One of the best offline multiplayer games of recent years finally appears on Xbox One, along with its expansion Dark World.

After reviewing Candleman we had a root around on the Xbox One store to see what other gems might lay hidden, at which point we came across TowerFall Ascension. Despite having been released on PlayStation 4 and PC way back in 2014 its only now that the game has appeared on Xbox. That in itself is notable, but its also brought with it an expansion called Dark World which weve never played before. But thank goodness weve now rectified that oversight.

In fact, TowerFall was first released in 2013 on the Ouya microconsole, and if you dont know what that is then we can assure you youre missing nothing. As youd expect of a multiplayer-focused indie game the premise is extremely simple to describe. It also involves what has long since become our favourite video game weapon: the bow and arrow. Fresh from enlivening the armoury of many a first person shooter, the medieval eras answer to a sniper rifle is here the weapon of choice in a series of single screen multiplayer face-offs against four human foes.

Theres no online option though, which wed like to think is a purposeful rather than technical decision. Online gaming has its place of course, but where the action allows it having everyone sat screaming round the same TV screen is always far more entertaining. We certainly cant imagine the triumph of catching an arrow in mid-air and firing it back at your opponent being quiet as sweet when all you can hear is mumbled tuts and curses from the other end of a microphone.

The arrow-catching trick is one of the games signature moves but its tactics are far more varied and nuanced than you at first realise. Although youre perfectly able to take potshots from a distance the bow can also be used at close range. And so you have to master aiming in all positions, since staying in one place is the most reliable way to ensure failure.

Theres also the not inconsiderable problem of running out of arrows. You only start with three and how many you have is always obvious to everyone, thanks to the little icon above your head. More can be picked up from around the arena or you can pluck your opponents out of the air and add it to your quiver. If neither option is available you can also jump on an opponents head, but this rarely seems to work out as well as it does for Mario.

More reliable are the various trick arrows, including bomb and drill attachments. Picking one of these up can instantly turn a match around, but there are other ways to change the status quo before you even start the game. A number of optional features, from exploding corpses to dying if you use the bow when you have no arrow, are reminiscent of the endless variations encouraged by split-screen classic GoldenEye 007.

The more obvious comparisons though are classic 2D games, with the game most resembling a cross between the single-screen platforming of Bubble Bobble and the intense four-player rivalry of Bomberman. Super Smash Bros. also offers a more modern comparison and really, praise doesnt come much higher than that when youre talking about offline multiplayer games.

The only real flaw is that the single-player modes are really not that interesting. Trials and Quest mode are useful for practising the basic skills but theyre not very engaging in themselves. Even with the addition of various kinds of monsters in Quest mode the appeal is lost when theres no human around to taunt with every victory. And even the two-player option is far less interesting than just straight deathmatch. But then none of the other games weve just namechecked have a decent story mode either.

The expansion Dark World adds a much more involved campaign mode than Quest, but its still not much fun on your own. As a four-player co-op campaign though its fantastic. There are multiple boss battles and new arrow types to take advantage of, one of which traps anyone that tries to catch it and another that allows for remote-detonations making the comparisons to Bomberman all the plainer. New stages can also be played in deathmatch mode, there are 10 new characters, and the option for an infinite array of procedurally-generated levels.

At 8 its a little pricey, and were surprised there isnt some kind of all-in-one compendium to celebrate coming to the Xbox One, but the campaign is definitely worth it if you can get some friends together. Obviously though the sensible thing to do is just start off with the base game, and what even on its own is one of the best local multiplayer games of the generation.

In Short: One of the best offline multiplayer games for years and yet more proof that the bow and arrow is gamings most entertaining weapon of choice.

Pros: Instantly accessible gameplay and controls, and yet with plenty of nuance and tactics to learn and master. Superb four-player action, including in the expansions Dark World mode.

Cons: The single-player modes do their best but the package as a whole is pointless if youre always going to play on your own. Dark World is quite expensive.

Simulation hypothesis: The smart person’s guide – TechRepublic

The simulation hypothesis is the idea that reality is a digital simulation. Technological advances will inevitably produce automated artificial superintelligence that will, in turn, create simulations to better understand the universe. This opens the door for the idea that superintelligence already exists and created simulations now occupied by humans. At first blush the notion that reality is pure simulacra seems preposterous, but the hypothesis springs from decades of scientific research and is taken seriously by academics, scientists, and entrepreneurs like Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk.

From Plato's allegory of the cave to The Matrix ideas about simulated reality can be found scattered through history and literature. The modern manifestation of the simulation argument is postulates that, like Moore's Law, over time computing power becomes exponentially more robust. Barring a disaster that resets technological progression, experts speculate that it is inevitable computing capacity will one day be powerful enough to generate realistic simulations.

The simulation hypothesis advances the idea that simulations might be the inevitable outcome of technological evolution. Though ideas about simulated reality are far from new and novel, the contemporary theory springs from research conducted by Oxford University professor of philosophy Nick Bostrom.

In 2003 Bostrom presented a paper that proposed a trilemma, a decision between three challenging options, related to the potential of future superintelligence to develop simulations. Bostrom argues this likelihood is nonzero, meaning the odds of a simulated reality are astronomically small, but because percentage likelihood is not zero we must consider rational possibilities that include a simulated reality. Bostrom does not propose that humans occupy a simulation. Rather, he argues that massive computational ability developed by posthuman superintelligence will likely develop simulations to better understand that nature of reality.

In his book Superintelligence using anthropic rhetoric Bostrom argues that the odds of a population with human-like population advancing to superintelligence is "very close to zero," or (with an emphasis on the word or) the odds that a superintelligence would desire to create simulations is also "very close to zero," or the odds that people with human-like experiences actually live in a simulation is "very close to one." He concludes by arguing that if the claim "very close to one" is the correct answer and most people do live in simulations, then the odds are good that we too exist in a simulation.

Simulation hypothesis has many critics, namely those in academic communities who question an overreliance on anthropic reasoning and scientific detractors who point out simulations need not be conscious to be studied by future superintelligence. But as artificial intelligence and machine learning emerge as powerful business and cultural trends, many of Bostrom's ideas are going mainstream.

It's natural to wonder if the simulation hypothesis has real-world applications, or if it's a fun but purely abstract consideration. For business and culture, the answer is unambiguous: It doesn't matter if we live in a simulation or not. The accelerating pace of automated technology will have a significant impact on business, politics, and culture in the near future.

The simulation hypothesis is coupled inherently with technological evolution and the development of superintelligence. While superintelligence remains speculative, investments in narrow and artificial general intelligence are significant. Using the space race as an analogue, advances in artificial intelligence create technological innovations that build, destroy, and augment industry. IBM is betting big with Watson and anticipates a rapidly emerging $2 trillion market for cognitive products. Cybersecurity experts are investing heavily in AI and automation to fend off malware and hackers. In a 2016 interview with TechRepublic, United Nations chief technology diplomat, Atefeh Riazi, anticipated the economic impact of AI to be profound and referred to the technology as "humanity's final innovation."

Though long-term prognostication about the impact of automated technology is ill-advised, in the short term advances in machine learning, automation, and artificial intelligence represent a paradigm shift akin to the development of the internet or the modern mobile phone. In other words, the economy post-automation will be dramatically different. AI will hammer manufacturing industries, and logistics distribution will lean heavily on self-driving cars, ships, drones, and aircraft, and financial services jobs that require pattern recognition will evaporate.

Conversely, automation could create demand for inherently interpersonal skills like HR, sales, manual labor, retail, and creative work. "Digital technologies are in many ways complements, not substitutes for, creativity," Erik Brynjolfsson said, in an interview with TechRepublic. "If somebody comes up with a new song, a video, or piece of software there's no better time in history to be a creative person who wants to reach not just hundreds or thousands, but millions and billions of potential customers."

The golden age of artificial intelligence began in 1956 at the Ivy League research institution Dartmouth College with the now-infamous proclamation, "every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it." The conference established AI and computational protocols that defined a generation of research. The conference was preceded and inspired by developments at Manchester College in 1951 that produced a program that could play checkers, and another program that could play chess.

Though excited researchers anticipated the speedy emergence of human-level machine intelligence, programming intelligence unironically proved to be a steep challenge. By the mid-1970s the field entered the so-called "first AI winter." The era was marked by the development of strong theories limited by insufficient computing power.

Spring follows winter, and by the 1980s AI and automation technology grew from the sunshine of faster hardware and the boom of consumer technology markets. By the end of the century parallel processingthe ability to perform multiple computations at one timeemerged. In 1997 IBM's Deep Blue defeated human chess player Gary Kasparov. Last year Google's DeepMind defeated a human at Go, and this year the same technology easily beat four of the best human poker players.

Driven and funded by research and academic institutions, governments, and the private sector these benchmarks indicate a rapidly accelerating automation and machine learning market. Major industries like financial services, healthcare, sports, travel, and transportation are all deeply invested in artificial intelligence. Facebook, Google, and Amazon are using AI innovation for consumer applications, and a number of companies are in a race to build and deploy artificial general intelligence.

Some AI forecasters like Ray Kurzweil predict a future with the human brain cheerly connected to the cloud. Other AI researchers aren't so optimistic. Bostrom and his colleagues in particular warn that creating artificial general intelligence could produce an existential threat.

Among the many terrifying dangers of superintelligenceranging from out-of-control killer robots to economic collapsethe primary threat of AI is the coupling of of anthropomorphism with the misalignment of AI goals. Meaning, humans are likely to imbue intelligent machines with human characteristics like empathy. An intelligent machine, however, might be programed to prioritize goal accomplishment over human needs. In a terrifying scenario known as instrumental convergence, or the "paper clip maximizer," a superintelligent narrowly focused AI designed to produce paper clips would turn humans into gray goo in pursuit of resources.

Trump’s Vision of Space Exploration – The New American

The Trump administration is seriously considering a major new initiative to privatize much of the space sector, promote a return to the moon by 2020, and aim for Mars and other Solar System targets soon thereafter. This, according to Politico.coms Bryan Bender, citing Trump administration internal documents obtained by Politico.

The central aim of the administrations new policy under consideration will be the large-scale economic development of space, and it will entail such revolutionary moves as fully privatizing lower-earth orbit, allowing for the mass deployment of private space stations, and freeing up NASA to return to cutting-edge research in new realms like manned exploration of interplanetary space.

As with all else that President Trump has tried to do, however, this new initiative is already meeting institutional resistance, particularly among the proponents of what Trump administration insiders are terming Old Space": mammoth corporations such as Boeing and Lockheed-Martin that have always enjoyed preferential access to space-related R&D grants and government contracts. Against them are arrayed the force of New Space": hungry young tech entrepreneurs such as Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, whose respective space companies, Blue Origin and SpaceX, have made stunning advances in space technology, including the coveted ability to fly craft into space and return them or stages of them back to Earth for reuse, a technology NASA never managed to develop. The Old Space concerns and their Capitol Hill supporters congressmen such as Senators Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who bitterly opposed the entry of upstart SpaceX into the exclusive club of space corporations allowed to do business with NASA are likely to resist change of this sort, since it may entail the loss of jobs among Old Space mega-employers in their home states.

The hard truth (hard, at least, for those whose guiding presumption is government infallibility as against private-sector unreliability) is that NASA has underachieved spectacularly in the area of manned space exploration since the glory days of the Apollo program. The space shuttle was a spectacular achievement, but ran hugely over cost and dominated NASAs budgetary priorities for three decades. Moreover, two space shuttles were lost, with significant losses in human life. Because of cost issues, the space shuttle was mothballed in 2011. But the result is that the United States no longer has the ability to put a human being into orbit. Only Russia and China currently have that capability, and the United States must rely on the former to keep the International Space Station staffed.

While their unmanned exploration of Mars, Saturn, Pluto, the dwarf planet Ceres, the asteroid Vesta, and many other objects in the Solar System has yielded a bounteous harvest for planetary scientists, and their array of space-based observatories such as the Hubble Space Telescope, the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory have revolutionized humanitys understanding of the universe, NASA has been perennially a day late and a dollar short in moving space technology forward from the 1970s.

In effect, NASA and its Old Space corporate allies are seen as too risk-averse, too prone to analysis paralysis to take space exploration and commercialization. Former Congressman and Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, who has been involved in some of the Trump administrations discussions on the new space initiative, summed up the issue admirably in a recent interview:

A good part of the Trump Administration would like a lot more risk-taking, competitive, aggressive, entrepreneurial approach to space. A smaller but still powerful faction represents Boeing and the expensive old contractors who have soaked up money with minimum results.

No NASA program dominated by bureaucrats could take the risks, accept the failures, and create a learning curve comparable to an entrepreneurial approach. Just think of the Wright Brothers 500 failures in five summers at $1 per failure. Ask how long NASA would have taken and how much it would have cost.

Notes Politico, The more ambitious administration vision could include new moon landings that see private American astronauts, on private space ships, circling the moon by 2020; and private lunar landers staking out de facto property rights for America on the moon, by 2020 as well, according to a summary of an agency action plan that the transition drew up for NASA late last month.

Elsewhere, the summary contemplates a total privatization of lower Earth orbit, including the International Space Station, a seamless low-risk transition from government-owned and operated stations to privately-owned and operated stations. Military assets would be excluded, naturally, but the Trump plan implies a low-orbit outer space that is almost entirely privatized, full of space stations for research, tourism, and transit to other destinations such as the moon the stuff of science fiction, that President Trump appears to believe can be accomplished only by unleashing the power of private enterprise.

We agree, of course, but the course is far from decided. Expect the old guard of Old Space and its congressional paladins to put up a fight, more concerned, as special interests inevitably are, with preserving status quo revenue streams than embracing the greater good. But if the Trump administration is able to win over NASA and enough political support on Capitol Hill, outer space in the near future may become a very busy place indeed.

A new issue briefreleased by the Center for American Progress finds that there is a solid foundation for a rejuvenated and realistic space exploration program as NASA transitions to new leadership under the Trump administration. Under the leadership of former administrator Charles Bolden, NASA has made real strides over the past eight years toward historic missions into the solar system. The incoming leadership should resist the temptation to hit the reset button and undo the gains made by their predecessors.

NASAs big plans for space exploration in the coming decades rest securely on the foundation laid by Administrator Bolden over the past eight years, said Rudy deLeon, CAP Senior Fellow and co-author of the brief. At this exciting time, it would be very counterproductive to reassess the trajectory currently in place. If we as a nation are going to fulfill the goal of putting a human on Mars in the coming decades, it will be done squarely on the back of the gains of the past eight years. It would be a shame to squander this opportunity to achieve this truly historic accomplishment.

The brieffinds that NASA is poised to undertake a truly ambitious program of space exploration. Human missions to Mars and robotic exploration programs will only succeed under an overall approach that sticks to the plan set forth over the past decade rather than attempts to change the direction of NASAs priorities.

With the flood of producers returning to trance, will W&W be heading back to their roots under a new alias?

Its been a long time since W&W has been known for something directly involving trance, and their jump to big room house really turned many fans against them. Lets take it back really quick, for those of you who arent well versed in the saga that is W&W. Joining forces in 2007, they released multiple trance tracks over the years,including many collaborations with notable artists like Mark Sixma, Ben Gold, and Ummet Ozcan. In 2011, they even released an entire album,Impact, on Armada Music that was also well received. Fast forward to 2012, when they struck gold with hit tracks Lift Off! and Invasion. Of course, if youve followed A State Of Trance, youd know that Invasion was also the anthem for ASOT 550 too. But the words W&W and Trance were numbered.

As the tastes of the electronic music scene changed, so did W&W. They werent alone, for what its worth, as others fled right along with them. Names like Ummet Ozcan, Tritonal, and others jumped to more popular genres too.By 2013 they began pumping out big room house hits that still were getting dancefloors going but forcing many older fans to choose between accepting their new sound or leaving them behind entirely. To their credit, theyve gone on to see success in the big room market. Bigfoot, The Code, Rave After Rave, and more have all gone on to become hitsbut it still stings that they left the trance scene behind.

Yesterday, Ultra Music Festival released the second phase of their lineup. Included in that list were many namesand even some aliases too that I wasnt expecting to see. Alpha 9, the old alias of Arty led the charge, and I was excited to see Sander Van Doorn brings you Purple Haze too. Being an active social media enthusiast, I was messaged a link to a post from one of the Ultra groups on Facebook with an interesting theory unfolding. It was brought to my attention that on the lineup post on facebook, someone had asked the question Where is W&W? and Ultras Official Facebook commented, Look Closer ;). The comment from Ultra, which has since been deleted, sparked my interestand many others though. The masses began to check one by one, but it clearly wasnt there in plain sight. One name that wasnt ringing any bells as an actual artist or alias was thoughNWYR.

So away I went in my mission to figure out if perhaps this was some secret alias that an artist like W&W could use. I crosschecked all the names of other artists to a variety of sources just to make sure I wasnt missing something, yet still, nothing could be found. Thats when the digging began, I started scouring W&W socials for any hint or sign that this was the case. I could only really source a comment in which they stated Chill guys, got tons of new music coming!! Even for the Trance heads out there ;). So the search continued to look at figuring out who NWYR was and I found it to be more baffling than ever.

It clearly HAS to be someone using an alias, but who? The artist profile on Ultras own website is lacking in any information about the artist outside of the logo. I stumbled upon the Facebook, Twitter, and SoundCloud, all of which were fresh accounts. The Facebook Page provided the first hint at NEW YEAR, and the SoundCloud placed their location in the Netherlandscuriously where W&W calls home. Unfortunately, after this, I hit a wall and the information really stopped there. I can point out the fact that there are two heads to the dragon and W&W is a duo, too, but honestly, we can only guess at this point.

Could it be someone else? Sure. Could it have been an interns mistake on Facebook? Of course. Maybe well end up seeing the name W&W show up on the Phase 3 lineup in March, or have another artist squash these claims and step forward as NWYR, who knows. But until then, anyones guess is as good as mine, and Ill subscribe to the idea that it is W&W returning to trance under a different alias.

Electronic artists and producers often are shrouded in mystery. Some switch between multiple aliases, cover their face, and manage to stay anonymous for years and years into their career. However, every now and then an artist does the opposite, and breaks the 4th wall. They decide to connect with their fans on a vulnerable, personable level.

Days ago, Russian producer Arty did just that. He posted a long note on Facebook, describing his musical journey intimately, and his feelings around rising to stardom. And so, Alpha 9 was re-born into 2017 with the luminous track The Night Is Ours. Long time fans of the musician will melt upon hearing the track. Its dreamy, introspective, uplifting, and rings in the essence of his trance roots. Even if youve never heard of him, the single is sure to inspire.
